Episode 137 of the Check Your Six Podcast brought Seminole County Public Schools into GRP Studios. We have done quite a bit of work with SCPS from a video standpoint but this time I had the pleasure of having Kristin Thole in the studio. She is one of the facilitators for the CTE Business Partnership Programs that they have at SCPS and some of the things that it offers. She explained about what the CTE Programs are all about, how they can tie in with the business's in Seminole, the recent spring Expo that they had showcasing the businesses looking might be looking for summer interns for their business. There are a lot of people and businesses that work with SCPS in a variety of ways to help promote their business but to also help grow the students that are coming through the school system. People like Sean Esler with Edge Consulting, Tony Boni with Be The Change Today Foundation, Debbie Rodriguez with iBuild, Michael Janerio with Gizmo Productions and Jennifer Englert with The Orlando Law Group are just some of the people that continue to pour into providing help and resources that allow for the best potential for students!! The ability for a student to graduate from one of the Seminole County Public Schools with an AA degree already completed is amazing and just another example of what if available to our kids!! Juneteenth Day is a federal holiday that takes place on June 19th, each year, and commemorates the emancipation of the slaves in the United States. It has been celebrated in various parts of the country since 1865. In Washington County, Wis., it has become an officially celebrated holiday, with an annual event taking place at The Tower Heritage Center in West Bend each June. This week, County Executive Josh Schoemann and the county's Chief Health and Human Services Officer, Julie Driscoll, join me to talk about the history of Juneteenth Day, how it got started in Washington County, and what to expect at this year's Juneteenth celebration. https://www.history.com/news/what-is-juneteenth (What Is Juneteenth? - HISTORY) https://www.washcowisco.gov/cms/one.aspx?portalId=16228038&pageId=17817722&objectId.705829=18451620&contextId.705829=17817723&parentId.705829=17817724&localStartDate=2022-06-19T13:00&localEndDate=2022-06-19T14:30&ref=mesTP9fg96fVsgzpWYeogEoh%2bS%2bY%2baqxxBDBHur1iIo%3d (Juneteenth Day - Washington County, WI Events Calendar) - Official details on Washington County's Juneteenth Celebration. More and more we are seeing a generation of our students being raised by their grandparents. The challenges that are presented to these “grand-families” are numerous, but for the past 20+ years, we have helped them and parents who need support raising children succeed through the Burke County Public School's FUTuRES program. The program is led by Lisa Schell and Michael Massey. Take a listen on your drive home or play us during your lunch break to see how this program has changed lives for the better! #ignitelearningbcps Here is a link to the BCPS FUTuRES program site, where you can find the resources and reach out for help! - - - https://www.burke.k12.nc.us/cms/one.aspx?portalId=697882&pageId=10809314 Pictured below are Lisa Schell (left) and Michael Massey, who operate the FUTuRES program for Burke County Public Schools.
Resources for Learning about Consent:https://www.rainn.org/articles/what-is-consent"What is consent?Consent is an agreement between participants to engage in sexual activity. Consent should be clearly and freely communicated. A verbal and affirmative expression of consent can help both you and your partner to understand and respect each other's boundaries.Consent cannot be given by individuals who are underage, intoxicated or incapacitated by drugs or alcohol, or asleep or unconscious. If someone agrees to an activity under pressure of intimidation or threat, that isn't considered consent because it was not given freely. Unequal power dynamics, such as engaging in sexual activity with an employee or student, also mean that consent cannot be freely given. How does consent work? When you're engaging in sexual activity, consent is about communication. And it should happen every time for every type of activity. Consenting to one activity, one time, does not mean someone gives consent for other activities or for the same activity on other occasions. For example, agreeing to kiss someone doesn't give that person permission to remove your clothes. Having sex with someone in the past doesn't give that person permission to have sex with you again in the future. It's important to discuss boundaries and expectations with your partner prior to engaging in any sexual behavior. You can change your mind at any time. You can withdraw consent at any point if you feel uncomfortable. One way to do this is to clearly communicate to your partner that you are no longer comfortable with this activity and wish to stop. Withdrawing consent can sometimes be challenging or difficult to do verbally, so non-verbal cues can also be used to convey this. The best way to ensure that all parties are comfortable with any sexual activity is to talk about it, check in periodically, and make sure everyone involved consents before escalating or changing activities." Kitsap Sun quotes:Link Article: https://www.kitsapsun.com/story/news/2021/10/02/north-kitsap-students-demand-school-district-make-campus-safer-show-solidarity-survivors-sexual-viol/5891493001/"North Kitsap school students have hit the streets five times in the last two weeks to bring attention to sexual misconduct and sexual assault both on campus and off and what they say is a culture of sexualization that they want school officials to address. The teens are tired of hearing their classmates being hurt, they said. Some said they have been victims of unwanted touching at school, and in some cases, sexual assault, both on- and off-campus. Some said they came to support peers who they hear are survivors of sexual assault.""how we can avoid our assaulters." For years even before I was in highschool the staff at NKHS and KHS have looked the other way when a student is crying for help. There have been 20+ people who have came forward within the last 4 days telling me how their school in NKSD has silenced them for YEARS. These rapists and assaulters have been getting away with this for years, some since they were 12 years old. These are your DAUGHTERS and your SONS your CHILDREN who are crying for help. We do NOT feel safe in a school where rapists get to roam free. We students and parents of NKSD demand investigations into these rapists , we demand change in our schools, we demand that we have the right to go to school everyday and feel safe. WE WANT CHANGE. "A petition at Change.org being circulated among students at the protests and walkouts calls for "investigations into these rapists" by the school district and has been signed by 1,300 people so far." "School officials say they have heard students' messages. A school district spokeswoman said in response to emailed questions from the Kitsap Sun that the district follows the state's mandatory reporting laws — which require school personnel to report cases of suspected physical or sexual abuse to law enforcement. The district "takes all allegations of harm and abuse very seriously, and we always investigate these reports," NKSD spokeswoman Jenn Markaryan wrote to the Kitsap Sun in an email.Markaryan said a response team is trained to respond to reports of sexual assault. Because of privacy laws, the district can't share the results of investigations or individual discipline, she said.In response to the protests, school principals are working with students to understand how students can best be supported and to find ways to continue to improve systems and wrap-around supports for students, Markaryan said."Each and every adult in our school district cares deeply about our students and their well-being," Markaryan wrote.Additionally, the district is working on schoolwide education efforts in regard to sexual abuse and reporting, Markaryan said. The district has also implemented age-appropriate sex education in line with state mandates passed by voters and the Legislature in 2020.In 2020, the Washington State Legislature and voters passed Senate Bill 5395, which requires all public schools to provide comprehensive sexual health education by the 2022–23 school year, with some requirements beginning in the 2020-21 school year. Markaryan said the district recommends a student who has been sexually assaulted talk to their school counselor or school administrator. But, students can talk to any adult they trust at school since all staff are mandatory reporters and all are trained annually on the requirements and processes for mandatory reporting, she said.North Kitsap school counselors' contact information can be found at http://nkschools.org/cms/One.aspx?portalId=419589&pageId=565053."Resources for victims of sexual assaultKitsap Sexual Assault Center: https://www.victimresources.org/ (For immediate support call or text the 24-hour hotline at 1-360-337-9773)24-hour National Sexual Assault Hotline: 800.656.HOPE(4673)The Coffee Oasis: https://thecoffeeoasis.com/ (24-Hour crisis text line at 360-377-5560 for teens ages 13-25 years old who are experiencing a crisis or just need to talk; Kingston: 360-881-0228; Poulsbo: 360-598-2091)YWCA Kitsap 24-hour Crisis Line: 1-800-500-5513Reach breaking news reporter Peiyu Lin at pei-yu.lin@kitsapsun.com or on Twitter @peiyulintw.

Archbishop Vigneron discusses Evangelical Charity and our call as Catholics to keep Jesus at the center of our good works so that we satisfy not just physical needs, but spiritual thirsts as well. Show notes: (0:22) Mike, Mary, and Archbishop Vigneron catch up on the last month. The Archbishop offers encouragement for a new school year, and he shares practical ways we in the Archdiocese of Detroit can contribute to the crises in Haiti and Afghanistan. (6:20) Mary introduces this episode's topic: evangelical charity. Archbishop Vigneron offers an overview of what exactly the virtue of charity is and what it means to describe charity as being evangelical. He shares how the decision to “rebrand” Christian service into evangelical charity developed from the call from Synod 16 to focus more clearly on our mission and the need to do good works with the Holy Spirit's involvement. (12:04) The Archbishop discusses the role of the Office of Evangelical Charity in enabling organizations to be renewed and refocused on the mission of announcing God in our communities. He talks, too, about Catholic Charities of Southeast Michigan and the works they perform in Detroit. (18:48) The Archbishop also recognizes St. Vincent De Paul Societies within parishes who are instrumental in mobilizing the works of mercy as well. Mary asks Archbishop Vigneron to explain more about the corporal works of mercy, and he shares each of the seven works and why they're so pivotal to our faith. The three also discuss Mercy in Action Day of Service and how people can get involved. (24:49) Archbishop Vigneron offers advice for how people can live the works of mercy out well in their daily lives, beginning with discernment and prayer, and leading to an opportunity to share testimony. Mike and Mary also examine the ways we can open ourselves everyday to find the opportunities to serve one another. (35:05) Mary and Mike share questions from the faithful with the Archbishop, including whether he ever considered a religious order, what a nuncio is and does, and the last good book he read. They then close with a blessing. Hey Everybody! Welcome back to the Bolton Ebikes Podcast. Today, I have a special guest. You probably actually know who she is, if you've been listening to the podcast for a while, or if you've ever emailed into Bolton Ebikes. Jessica was the first person I hired at Bolton Ebikes and handles everything behind the scenes at the podcast and the YouTube channel, and a lot of other stuff has never been on the podcast. We're not going to talk necessarily about what Jessica does as much as a trail system in an area in Arizona. So we'll get into that in just a minute. In today's episode you'll learn more about: What is The Loop and what does it offer within the city of Tucson, Arizona? What is advertised with Pima County as being allowed and not allowed? What are people saying on Facebook to voice their concerns based on their experience and need for an ebike. What happens if you ride an ebike on the loop? Is there anything being done to allow ebikers access to The Loop more often? What has Jess so fired up and what is she encouraging you all to do to join her? Thanks again for listening to the Bolton Ebikes Podcast, I do want to throw a little plug out for e bike search dot com. That's our new buy and sell marketplace for used electric bikes. Thanks Jessica for being on the podcast episode for the first time. Thank you. It was amazing if you are not on our email list for the podcast, make sure to go to ebike podcast.com. Very simple, easy to remember ebike podcast.com. The only thing we're going to send you our emails when new podcast episodes come out. Or maybe some occasional little tidbits about other models and ebike news. And of course, if you want video content, you can always go check out Bolton Ebikes on YouTube. And of course, Bolton ebikes dot com. If you want to buy a bike, we've got a lot of bikes coming in right now. Availability is getting better. Meet Katie. Retail credit cards became her best friend shortly after college. Home alone with her 4-month-old in a place where she didn't know anyone, she turned to shoes and designer handbags. Being a military family resulted in multiple moves and income instability. Eventually, her grandma came to the rescue and helped get her debt under control. But that was only short-lived. She had found someone who supported her and did not judge her—even when her payments became unaffordable. After many ups and downs, she eventually completed her debt plan five years later. And when she was looking for a job, she found an organization that helped others in the same way she had been helped. Now, she's able to take her passion and skills to pay it forward. Topic: Stephanie Murphy and George Mandrik join me to discuss their experiences and lessons learned from the 2008 Ron Paul Presidential Campaign. We also ruminate on what motivates people to participate in politics in the first place.
