Who is responsible for making a work of art? In each episode of this collaborative podcast series, one anthropologist, specialising in a particular cultural context, has a conversation with an artist of their choosing, exploring issues of authorship and responsibility in art. Ranging across geographical locations and creative practices, discussions address and unpack the conceptualisation of the artistic person, authorship as centred upon an individual or bounded group, and the development of responsibility for artworks during and after their making. Each episode brings a fresh perspective on where ideas come from, what agency an artist feels in the creation of their work, and how, and in which contexts, ownership and responsibility for the artwork are claimed. Ultimately, as a collection, the series encourages listeners to think about ‘the artist' and ‘the artwork' as dynamic processes in a relationship of authoring. Series 3, Episode 5 of Artery features Aline Motta with Alex Ungprateeb Flynn Alex Ungprateeb Flynn is Assistant Professor and Graduate Vice Chair at the Department of World Arts and Cultures/Dance, University of California, Los Angeles. Working with activists, curators, and artists in Brasil, Alex investigates the prefigurative potential of art in community contexts to theorize the production of knowledge, notions of utopia, and social and aesthetic dimensions of form. Framed by a collaborative methodological approach, Alex fundamentally inquires how human beings express themselves artistically, and in doing so, seek to transform the world. X/ Insta: alexungprateebf With her artistic practice, Aline Motta (b. 1974, Niterói, Brazil) seeks to point out and fill in the gaps in her own family history as a result of colonial erasure. Her videos, photographs, installations, and performances are based on speculative studies that mix archival research, field trips, and oral history reports that she uses to access, nourish, and reveal parts of the past that were previously thought to be lost. In 2023, she exhibited in the Sharjah Biennial 15 (UAE), at MoMA Museum of Modern Art and the 35th São Paulo Biennial. - "I'll be your mirror" é uma música do álbum "The Velvet Underground & Nico", de 1967. Want to hear something surprising, unusual, or downright weird? This week's show has all three of those covered. Jamie Katz – Licensed Pet Detective When a beloved dog goes missing, we tend to panic. We assume the worst: dognapping! We tend to not think clearly about how to best begin a search. That's where a licensed Private Investigator can be of help. Jamie Katz is just such a professional ... who exclusively works to get pets back home. This real-life, bonafide Pet Detective offers tips and insights. And you won't want to miss the story about her latest super-success story.  Stray – A New Documentary Filmmaker Elizabeth Lo takes us to the streets of Istanbul in her new documentary Stray. It's illegal to capture and hold or kill stray dogs in the Turkish capital … which may make them the city's most interesting denizens. Filmed at dog level, Lo takes us on a long walk with the dogs. We play in parks, march in protests, visit a couple “dog restaurants, and listen in on everyday conversations. Lo crafts a poignant, wordless portrait of a way of life where dogs and humans interconnect by the multitude … to explore the inherent value of all beings. The Airport for Aliens Currently Run by Dogs When virtual reality changes your reality, you know you're truly in the matrix. Indie Game Developer and Award-Winning Narrative Director, Xalavier Nelson Jr., once identified as a cat person … but became a dog person by creating a video game that deals in absurdity. The Airport for Aliens Currently Run by Dogs asks the question “what happens if you and your loved one are the only humans left … and you are separated by galaxies … and what if dogs are the ones running the alien airport you must use to reunite?” Using unabashedly joyful stock photo dogs in his game ended up changing his view on the species. Now he now has a real-life dog – something that wouldn't have happened without the game. "The Bar Room" gehört zum mit zwei Michelinsternen ausgezeichneten Restaurant "The Modern" in der MoMa in New York.

Mikhal Dekel discusses her book Tehran Children: A Holocaust Refugee Odyssey (W.W. Norton & Company, 2019). This is episode 274 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast for educators. Mikhal Dekel was born in Haifa, Israel, to a Holocaust refugee father and an Israeli-born mother. Over the course of seven intense years, she completed her mandatory military service, earned an L.L.B. from Tel Aviv University’s Buchmann School of Law, interned at the Tel Aviv State Attorney’s Office and joined the Israel Bar Association, before deciding to take a complete break. In New York, where Mikhal traveled to regroup, she worked odd jobs, sat for hours at the MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) before Manet’s Water Lilies, and eventually began a graduate program in English at the City College of New York and then a Doctoral program at Columbia University. She now lives in Manhattan with her family, teaches English and Comparative Literature at the City College and the CUNY Graduate Center, and directs CCNY’s Rifkind Center for the Humanities and Arts. Tehran Children: A Holocaust Refugee Odyssey (2019) is the culmination of Mikhal’s decade-long journey to understand her father and the odyssey at the core of his young adulthood—an experience which he never talked about, though it informed every aspect of his being. His wartime odyssey was also part of a larger chapter in the history of World War II, that of refugees in Central Asia and the Middle East. The fact that most Polish Jews who survived the war had followed this path was virtually unknown at the time when she began writing. At CCNY, Mikhal teaches courses on Literature and Theory of Migrations; the Historical Memoir; Representations of Trauma; Law and Literature, and other topics. Mikhal also directs the Rifkind Center for the Humanities and Arts at CCNY, which under her leadership has supported faculty research, awarded fellowships and hosted talks, conferences and interdisciplinary seminars that seek to broaden the academic conversation. Exceptional Women of the World: Libby Brockhoff, Odysseus Arms

Libby Brockhoff, CEO of Odysseus Arms in San Francisco, is all about breaking convention and keeping ahead — resulting in penultimate moments in creativity, culture and even world affairs. A few, in her impressive career so far, stand out. First, she, along with the other founders named a new agency in London “Mother,” with the intention of separating it from the male-dominated stereotypes. More recently, her leadership was front and center with her teams supporting both Caitlyn Jenner’s coming out story on NBC and activating President Obama’s arms trade treaty with Amnesty International. As the CEO of the only Women's Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) certified female-owned agency in San Francisco, it’s clear that Brockhoff places a great premium on ensuring that the world and brands fully understand her commitment to not only owning and running an agency, but inspiring others to be brave enough to do the same. Bravery and fearlessness are a constant thread for Brockhoff. She fears nothing — especially large-scale work with daunting deadlines. One looks no further than a global Facebook project to motivate the workforce, at the behest of Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg, to take up a good cause, that was to be delivered in less than 10 weeks. Or, YouTube’s massive first paid media campaign that had multiple deliverables on myriad platforms, and had to be completed in less than three months. Part of the fearlessness may be borne from the rigor she learned at the University of Delaware — an advertising program, led by Ray Nichols, that preached the demands and rigor of day-to-day life and expectations in advertising. What was telling was Nichols’ appreciation for great icons and work in advertising’s past, not skipping over the many women who made meaningful contributions decades ago. To Brockhoff, the discipline, plus the opportunity to have female icons to aspire to, provided a prodigious foundation from which to work. Brockhoff is not short of opinions and advice. Her “must list” is an eclectic blend of practical (learn to manage finances when you’re young) and creative (see Matthew Barney’s work at a modern art museum). She also believes that creativity and data can actually coexist, but should lean more toward the Moma (Museum of Modern Art) and less Madison Avenue. Another must? More comedy in the work. (AMEN!!) But the sage advice that is good for anyone in the industry, not just those breaking in, are around the simple skills: manners, interesting conversations, picking up the phone, doing homework and more. To Brockhoff, these are the things that really show what people really have to offer.
