Whenever faced with a challenging circumstance, it is tempting to overwhelm ourselves by imagining the worst. However, we need not be bullied by our own fears. To every anxious thought we say, “I do not consent to that!” Then we choose to focus on divine possibilities. This casts the burden on God, and by refusing to reopen the case, we will win. On this episode, Darrell and Ed drive home the fact that our reality is transformed miraculously by keeping our thoughts tuned in to all that is lovely. Today's guest, merry Matt Pazzarelli, shares proof that faith plus love equals blessings as we discuss today's Daily Word®, “Bold.”

Regardless of what shows up in life, we have the power to choose how we respond. How we respond dictates the chain of events that follow. By choosing to reimagine situations with love, imagining that love is being expressed towards us and flowing out from us to others, we are activating the supernatural, miracle-working power of God. On this episode, Darrell and Ed encourage listeners to expect and know that love is at work. Whatever it is, whoever is involved, see them in the highest light and magic will follow—guaranteed! Ephesians | Week 2 | In this text, Paul states his first major declaration: we are seated in heavenly places with Christ. Regardless of our current worldly location, as believers we are “in Christ” and everything we have is “by Christ”. Darrell takes us through Ephesians 1:3-14 to help us understand the alternate universe, location, and reality that Paul is talking about in his letter. When we begin to understand where we ought to be located, we begin to experience new realities of God, new spiritual blessings, and a new, heavenly view. In this episode, White House Communications Agency Hall of Famer, Darrell Williams, shares leadership insights gathered while working in the White House during the George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush administrations. The White House Communications Agency provides assured global information services to the President, Vice President, and others as directed, ensuring the White House is able to communicate with anyone, under any condition. Darrell Williams was determined to be one of the best to ever serve there. Listen in as Darrell talks about how in moments of crisis or great difficulty (like the aftermath of 9/11), your team members need to know that you care about them before you ask them to do anything. Once you have established your concern for their wellbeing, people will be ready to take on the toughest tasks. That's the “people always” part of the equation. Important missions bring stress. It's the nature of the job. In order to manage the stress, trust your training (i.e., Do what you've been trained to do in those situations), always plan for contingencies, and be willing to find out-of-the-box solutions. Take ownership of the issue and take initiative to find a solution. When mistakes happen–and they inevitably will–empower people to take action and find a solution, make decisions, and move forward. The need to complete the mission does not change because something went wrong. If it's someone else's mistake, show grace when you can (i.e., don't seek to embarrass or make an example of the mistake) and make the experience an opportunity for them to learn. Highlight the learning and the creative solutions that were discovered. Advice for success: Find a need (in your organization, family, community). Address the need using your talents and strengths. Repeat as long as there are needs in the world (you'll never run out of opportunities). You'll feel better about yourself, make a difference in people's lives, and learn along the way. For more resources check out the links below! As a member of the military, Darrell was awarded the Presidential Service Badge, a prestigious award earned by relatively few members of the military throughout the history of the United States. Darrell is now retired from active duty, but he is still serving. “What's one of your earliest memories?” my friend Darrell asks me. At first, it's hard to remember. As I'm thinking back and back… I finally have one. Poetry! My grandmother and I loved to (and still do!) write, recite, and memorize poems. I remember one poem in particular to this day: “Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout Would Not Take the Garbage Out” by Shel Silverstein. Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout would not take the garbage outShe'd scour the pots and scrub the pansCandy the yams and spice the hamsAnd though her daddy would scream and shoutShe simply would not take the garbage outAnd so, it piled up to the ceilingsCoffee grounds, potato peelings… It continues on and I know the whole poem by heart to this day. What's really crazy though? It isn't just the poem I remember – I can still see the accompanying image of a looming, tottering garbage pile threatening to fall over. Even as an adult, that poem and image are etched in my memory. My special guest today, Mike Gordon, has spent a lifetime illustrating books of all kinds. For 36 years, Mike has illustrated over 400 books and brought words to life in the form of images. In this episode, we're taking the story and going beyond the words! We discuss going from blank page to the first drawn line, knowing when you're done drawing a character, the desire (or lack thereof) of recreating past characters, and the love for being an illustrator. What you will learn in this episode: Why quality can sometimes take a back seat to quantity What does NOT need to be in a story Why looking back might actually slow you down Who is Mike? British-born Mike Gordon is a designer, illustrator, and caricaturist who brings original, sophisticated styles and techniques to his work. In 1983, the talented and highly experienced artist started freelance illustrating and has illustrated over 150 books. He draws from his international experience in publishing, public relations, journalism, and advertising to aid his projects and improve his skill set. Mike's work incorporates fiction and non-fiction and has been seen in over 18 countries. He illustrates and designs for major publishers like HarperCollins, Penguin, Simon & Schuster, Random Century, Western Publishing, Walker Books, Reed International, Ladybird, Longman, and Wayland. In addition, he's produced hundreds of greeting card designs for Hallmark in the U.S. and Gordon Fraser in the U.K., among other international giants. In his spare time, Mike enters cartoons in worldwide competitions which has added to his global reputation as a top humorous illustrator. Ever since 1993, he's set up operations in California where he's continued his stellar career, even gaining a nomination in the National Cartoonists Society Awards. Ephesians | Week 1 | In the first sermon of his series on Ephesians, Darrell walks us into what he believes is the core message of the letter: things are not as they seem. Written by Paul while imprisoned in Rome in 62 A.D, the letter to the Ephesians shows how those who have put their faith in Jesus are able to see reality through a new lens, one that changes our understanding of power, authority, unity, victory, relationship, time, and where salvation is really found. There is a new empire breaking in with a new emperor. Darrell says that with these new glasses on, we are in for quite an adventure as we explore the book of Ephesians. Beloved as Catwoman from the 1960's Batman series, Julie Newmar first appeared as Miss Devlin on the season 4 Twilight Zone episode, "Of Late I think of Cliffordville." Pat Hingle, who played the role of Commissioner Gordon in the 1980's and 90's Batman films, made his Twilight Zone appearance in the season 4 episode, "The Incredible World of Horace Ford." Besides featuring actors who would later appear in the Batman universe, these two episodes features plots involving men who can't let go of their past. While "Cliffordville" tells the tale of a business tycoon who finds his life empty after reaching the top of the mountain, "Horace Ford" features a story of a man who evidently hasn't matured into adulthood. One of these episodes, while far from perfect, still does a fairly good job of landing its intended message. However, the other episode fails to land coherently for either Darrell or Robert and even caused them to wonder if it might be the worst Twilight Zone episode of them all. In this message from Darrell's time candidating at Glendale Presbyterian Church in 1993, two pieces of scripture are explored: Ezekiel 37:1-14 and Romans 8:18-26. Darrell is inviting the church to remember the hope we find in Christ. We see God's promise of resurrection and new life in the story of Ezekiel and the Valley of Dry Bones. The critical idea for us to grasp in this message is that dry bones cannot make themselves live, but the speech and breath of Jesus Christ can. That is the vision of hope. Like any sketch comedy show, part of Almost Live's ability to sustain week after week, came from a reliance on recurring characters and bits. Uncle Fran, Capable Woman, Sluggy, The High-Fivin' White Guys, A Woman's Place, Speed-Walker, the Joy of Painting guy, The Lame List, Green River Dance, The Worst Girlfriend in the World, and more. But - and I cannot prove this - if you ask most any show fan who's their most remembered recurring character, the winner has to be the Mind Your Manners guy, Billy Quan. If Almost Live produced, say, 12 versions of 'The Lame List,' there were perhaps twice as many episodes of 'Mind Your Manners.' I could be wrong. I once thought that gravity was a hoax. But in any case, Billy was a mainstay at least once a month. The guy who played the part never auditioned for it. He was, to say the least, a reluctant thespian. But like it or not, Darrell Suto became one of the most recognized figures on a show in which he was not even a formal cast member. His story is remarkable. Born in Seattle, a third-generation Japanese American, raised as a Buddhist, now a Catholic. He earned Seven national Daytime Emmy awards - not as a performer - but as a production photographer and editor. Hard to believe, but he is a man with no formal martial arts training. And yet, as the otherwise peaceable Billy Quan... he could kick your ass. He now lives in Oklahoma City with his wife, Mary. There is certainly no one more beloved among the people who worked with him back in the day, than Darrell Suto.

The Space In Which He Calls Us To Follow | Week 13 | Darrell begins this sermon on evil and the gospel with the declaration: “Thank God for the gospel.” Jesus of Nazareth has changed the way the universe goes together. Darrell tells the crucial story of two mountains - the mountain of temptation in Matthew 4, and the mountain of victorious authority of Matthew 28. Be encouraged by the good news that because Jesus had fulfilled the role of servant, dying on the cross, being raised from the dead he now has all authority to assume the role of King of the nations. The King with nail-scarred hands. The Space In Which He Calls Us To Follow | Week 12 | In this sermon, Darrell reminds us that sin is not something we have to live in bondage to because Jesus Christ has dealt with sin. Not that we can not still sin, but that it is illogical because Jesus' death, resurrection, and ascension have fundamentally altered the reality of sin. Sin has no claim on Jesus. His death was the death of the power of sin. His resurrection is resurrection to newness of life. We are united with Him, and therefore sin has no claim on us. The Space In Which He Calls Us To Follow | Week 11 | In John 14:1-12, Darrell helps us acknowledge that Jesus makes one of His most startling promises in His ministry: Jesus claims that we will do more works in our life when we have our faith in Him. Darrell shows how the double “truly truly” in this text is a promise that all Christ followers can build their life on because Jesus dealt with the power of sin and death before going back to the royal throne of the Father. Jesus came to set a new reality of how our world comes together and He ultimately ushers in a new reality through His death, resurrection and ascension. When this happened, Jesus promised that He would send an advocate, the Holy Spirit, who empowers us to lean in, welcome, and throw our weight onto Jesus and His promise. The Space In Which He Calls Us To Follow | Week 10 | Though Jesus is physically absent from our lives here on earth, we live with the ongoing presence of His Spirit. The Holy Spirit– the “Paraclete,” our Helper– has one main job: to bear witness to the reality of Jesus for those who believe and for those who don't yet believe. In this message, Darrell reminds us that the same Spirit who revealed the good news on the day of Pentecost is still convicting and convincing the individual human heart that Jesus is who He says He is. Not only that, the Holy Spirit leads us from the sin of unbelief into the truth that Jesus is victorious over sin, evil, and death, and is translating that victory into our own hearts and minds, transforming our lives so that we, too, may bear witness to Jesus. The Space In Which He Calls Us To Follow | Week 9 | In this sermon, Darrell draws our attention to Jesus' words about how to live once he is physically absent from earth. In every place we go, with every person we meet, even when sin, evil, and death are present and appear dominant, the good news is that the Paraclete is present and active! The Paraclete, also known as the Holy Spirit, is the presence of Jesus with us and with all people. Jesus revealed this good news to his disciples just before he was crucified, died, was buried, resurrected, and ascended. And this good news is crucial for disciples to understand, because Jesus does not ask us to carry on his work alone. Jesus knows we are not strong enough to do so on our own. Rather, Jesus asks us to join the work that the Paraclete is already and always carrying on. The Space In Which He Calls Us To Follow | Week 8 | What a friend we have in the paraclete, who discloses to us what is to come, brings to remembrance all that Jesus has said, teaches us all things, and helps us to love Jesus. In this message Darrell breaks down the wonderful work of the Holy Spirit in the lives of the believer. Christmas 2013 | Week 1 | What are you expecting this Christmas? In this message, Darrell looks at the expectations John the Baptist had as he prepared the way for the Lord. Jesus, he came to believe, was the messiah, and so his expectations were that in meeting Jesus, he would meet God. He expected to see signs and wonders of the new kingdom breaking into this world. He expected to be overwhelmed, engulfed, flooded, and filled with the Holy Spirit and fire as the saviour of the world entered in. When you hear the story of Christmas, a baby coming in a manger, what do you expect? In recent years, the role of retail in health care has grown beyond the co-location of clinics and pharmacies, with many large retailers now expanding their care delivery practices to include full-service health centers, telehealth offerings, and home delivery of pharmaceuticals. Retailers like Walmart, CVS, Amazon, Walgreens, and Target are all pursuing a healthcare strategy. The opportunity to bring consumerism to the forefront in healthcare has never been more promising, and these retail companies are looking to deliver consumer-centric innovation in a way that the traditional healthcare system has been unable to. In addition to the provision of a high-touch, technology-enabled primary care delivered in existing brick-and-mortar facilities that are highly convenient and familiar to patients, these companies have begun to leverage other assets, including online platforms, robust supply chain and delivery infrastructures, and access to capital to grow their health care offerings. In this episode, you are going to hear from three thought leaders with unique perspectives on this important topic. We have Dr. David Nash (Founding Dean Emeritus at Jefferson College of Population Health), Marcus Osborne (Senior Vice President of Walmart Health), and Darrell Moon (the Founder and CEO of Orriant). Episode Bookmarks: 02:00 Retail companies (e.g. Walmart, CVS, Amazon, Walgreens) are bringing consumer-centric innovation to healthcare 03:15 Introductions to Marcus Osborne (SVP, Walmart Health), Dr. David Nash (Dean Emeritus, Jefferson College of Population Health), and Darrell Moon (CEO, Orriant) 04:30 The traditional American healthcare is one of the least consumer-centric models ever developed in a capitalist economy 06:25 Dr. Nash describes the current socioeconomic challenges of Philadelphia as a construct for how poverty contributes to adverse health outcomes 08:50 Dr. Nash reference the seminal article by Dr. David Kindig, “What is Population Health?” and how population health relates to SDOH and institutional racism 11:30 Is retail-based primary care the answer to improved population health through more effective patient engagement? 13:00 Referencing Fred Lee's book, “If Disney Ran Your Hospital” in thinking about how we can optimize the patient experience and deliver personalized service 14:40 Marcus describes how supply and demand challenges of primary care in the effective management of chronic disease 16:30 “The biggest issue we face in healthcare is variation in care delivery.” 18:00 Technology, innovation, and interdisciplinary care teams as the ultimate solution to address population health challenges 19:00 The role of the “Professionally Nice Person” in consumer-centric care delivery and how Community Health Workers can be used to improve outcomes 20:00 Our challenge is getting the system comfortable with the reimagining of team-based care (not the patients!) 23:00 Darrell describes the importance of “massively powerful primary care” and the power of relationships 25:00 Nuka System of Care – Southcentral Foundation as a leading example of the “best healthcare system in the world” and how it emphasizes relationships, trust, and patient convenience 30:00 Marcus describes the absurdity of the “balanced interest” model in designing healthcare reforms (the interests of the consumers are all that matters!) 34:00 Dr. Nash on how unexplained clinical variation supersedes SDOH in importance when it comes to population health 35:00 Keeping only the wealthy healthy in a retail-based care model will perpetuate health inequities 37:00 Life expectancy is determined primarily by the zip code to which you live (e.g. SDOH disparities contributing to a 20-year variance in adjacent zip codes) 39:00 For-profit, private-equity backed SDOH companies are a driving force to community-based interventions 40:30 Marcus describes how Walmart Health is addressing social determinants ...
