The acclaimed Japanese anime series Star Blazers, or Space Battleship Yamato, celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, so today I welcomed my friend Tim Eldred to the show to talk about the series and its many spinoffs and reboots. Tim is a comic and animation artist who produced a Star Blazers comic book and is the premiere expert in and historian for the series. It's a welcome break from the existential dread of our politics. You can follow Tim's work at OurStarBlazers.com and The Art Vault. If you love animation and comics, chances are you're familiar with his incredible work. Show Notes This week begins our coverage of Char's Counterattack with... a bunch of things that happened before Char's Counterattack. We recap and discuss the first two SD shorts, - both of which were shown in theaters before the Char's Counterattack movie: “Fierce Fighting - Will Gundam Stand Up!?” (激闘編 - ガンダム大地に立てるか!?) and “Holiday - The Menace of the Zeon Hotel? Destruction orders for the Gundam Pension!” (休日編 - ジオン・ホテルの脅威?ガンダム・ペンション破壊命令!!). In addition to our first thoughts and impressions, we try to identify and explain references, puns, and other gags that might be missed by an audience that doesn't speak Japanese. Thom researches the origins of the SD or "Super Deformed" aesthetic in anime and anime merchandise, and I give a whirlwind review of world events from the end of Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ to the premier of Char's Counterattack - February 22nd, 1986 until March 12th, 1988. Contemporary Events Wikipedia timelines for 1986 and 1987. More detailed information about the Khian Sea waste-disposal incident, and the Goiânia accident. Wikipedia pages about Klaus Barbie (the "Butcher of Lyon") and the warcrimes allegations against Kurt Waldheim. In Cold War notes, the history and content of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, the drafting and belated fame of Reagan's "Tear down this wall" speech, and Perestroika. How the Seville Statement on Violence came to be, the contents, and critiques. Diego Maradona and the 1986 FIFA World Cup. The slang phrase "going Postal" and its origins in US Postal Service workplace shootings. The 1980s in Japan specifically. A tweet from professor of early modern and modern Japanese religions, Takashi Miura, featuring art inspired by traditional depictions of the warrior-monk Benkei. Jisho.org page for the word あげる (ageru), listing multiple meanings and their different kanji. Here are two responses, one on Quora and one on Reddit's "Ask Historians" subreddit. It is also covered very briefly in this article from TimeOut Tokyo about kimono. Music The music in the SD recap sections is "Hyson" by Olivia and "Dawn" by Mr. Smith. “Ambush At Jupiter!” Credits and NotesEpisode Four is probably my favorite in the first season. It's got it all, introspection, human drama, a flashback and of course, the WAVE MOTION GUN!We had a small fighter battle in Episode One, a minor space battle in Episode Two, but this is the first beat-down drag-out fight of the series. Battles are fun to write, to mix and (let's face it) this is a WAR story so they're kind of inevitable. If this story had no battles, it'd be Star Trek. (rimshot)One of the hardest things about producing this series, has been finding clean, iconic sound effects. You can't just simply record the build up to firing the WMG at the floating continent in the anime and use it here, you have to clean off the dialog. That's a long and laborious process let me tell you. The Wave Gun sequence took me the better part of a week to clean up... and then after I was done, I found a collection of Yamato sound effects on Youtube that was clean as a whistle. Head, meet desk. This Episode is dedicated to Mr. Tim Eldred. Tim is the creator of the “Star Blazers Rebirth” and “Bolar Wars: Extended” webcomics as well as the artist on the short-lived Star Blazers comic/magazine from the 90's. His work has served as inspiration for this series, and rekindled my love of Leiji Matsumoto's work in manga and anime. -DevCREWSea of Stars is written, produced and directed by Devin Cox, of Forward Momentum Productions.CAST (in order of appearance)Narrator: Mark “The ENCaffinated ONE” KilfoilJordan “Jordy” Venture: Dave FrizzellPops McClendon: Devlin JamesCaptain Derek Wildstar: Joe HarrisonMei Gideon: Silas CarderJoachin Reyes: Nathan ButlerSam Vandom: Philippa BallantineHans Schneider: Zach McCueMac Stevens: Emry KinneyMichael Vega: Sean HillNeville Drake: Scott BreakallColonel Nasca: Andre de AlmeidaMost Holy Xavier: Nathan ButlerColin O'Donnell: Jim PerryPhilippe de LaRoche: Allan SmitheeMUSIC:All music in the series is drawn from several commercially released CDs of music from the original animated series “Uchuu Senkan Yamato.” Many of the CDS have long since gone out of print, though some may still be importable through Amazon.com. This week we depart from the standard show format to conduct an interview with Tim Eldred, who's been an anime fan for about as long as we've been alive. Tim is a huge fan of Space Battleship Yamato (aka Star Blazers) as well as Armored Trooper VOTOMS and Fist of the North Star. In addition, he has written comicbooks and does work in Western animated works such as Teen Titans, MTV's Spider-Man, and much more.
