It's Tuesday, and we're rounding up the biggest stories of the week. First, Union Station is set to unveil the results of a six-month, $11-million renovation this weekend, but is this a revolution for the transit hub? Or yet another evolution in its 110-year history? Then we discuss the Denver Police Department's crack down on what is apparently a huge public safety issue: expired car registrations and temporary plates. Westword editor Patty Calhoun joins producer Paul Karolyi to share license plate hacks, Union Station secrets, and respond to a listener comment on our skepticism ahead of Denver's Fourth of July drone show last week. Paul quoted Axios Denver's coverage of a recent public safety survey. Patty mentioned Councilman Flynn's “investigation” into expired license plates, and we discussed Karl Christian Krumpholz's terrific comic history of Union Station. What do you think about DPD cracking down on expired license plates? On Episode 77 of No Rain Date we're joined by two people who help connect our community with art as part of the work they do at the Allentown Art Museum: Amanda Lovell, the museum's Director of Public Engagement, and AAM's Youth & Family Education & Programs Coordinator, Nicole Mangold. The Allentown Art Museum's history spans roughly 85 years. During that time the institution founded as an outlet for Walter Baum's art school has grown into a world-class cultural center, while remaining approachable by individuals from all walks of life. In order to remain a vital part of the Lehigh Valley's arts and culture scene, the museum continues to evolve, via the unique programming it offers, the special events and exhibitions it hosts, and of course, with its collections. Nicole and Amanda discuss some of the upcoming items on the museum's calendar as well as how anyone can enjoy them. We also learn about how the COVID pandemic has impacted the museum, preservation of the museum's collections and how area residents can support it by becoming members or volunteers. As always, Josh has a news roundup and Saucon Source sportswriter, Keith “Coach Rief” Riefenstahl has a preview of Friday night's Saucon Valley vs. Northwestern Lehigh football game. Today, we find ourselves in Rwanda. Rwanda, officially the Republic of Rwanda, is also known as the land of a thousand hills. Rwanda shares borders with Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo. In 2017, President Paul Kagame was elected to a third seven-year term. According to official figures he received 99 percent of the vote. As we already pointed out in our previous episodes, even in democratic constitutional states, human rights violations occur on a regular basis. However, emerging and developing countries, such as African countries are particularly affected. In Rwanda, significant human rights issues include serious restrictions on free expressions like violence against journalists, censorship and website blocking; torture; forced disappearance; acts of violence and criminalisation on sexual orientation; substantial interference with the rights of peaceful assembly and restrictions on political participation. Host Nangamso Kwinana is joined by Louis Busingye who is a Human Rights Lawyer living in Rwanda. A conversation with leading Atlanta-based organizers about the deep, intersectional, and transformative struggle for Black liberation. ---------------------------------------------------- Much of the ‘back of the house' organizing that has made the current rebellion and political moment possible goes unseen. So often images of protestors in the streets capture our collective attention and imagination. People often think that protests and marches define organizing. However, so much of what Black organizers do involves more mundane and less sexy work like: mutual aid, transformative justice, fundraising for bail, working to fight evictions, healing and carework. This work helps lay the groundwork for getting people to imagine the abolition of policing and other violent systems in order to build support networks (and worlds) that don't rely on the logics of anti-Blackness. This behind the scenes work is also gendered, racialized, and classed labor that many Black queer, trans, non-binary, and disabled femmes perform. Why is this organizing work important? How is it beautiful/artful? How do we elevate/celebrate it? How do we invite people into this beautiful work? Speakers: Mary Hooks is the co-director of Southerners on New Ground (SONG). SONG is a political home for LGBTQ liberation across all lines of race, class, abilities, age, culture, gender, and sexuality in the South. We build, sustain, and connect a southern regional base of LGBTQ people in order to transform the region through strategic projects and campaigns developed in response to the current conditions in our communities. SONG builds this movement through leadership development, coalition and alliance building, intersectional analysis, and organizing. Mary's commitment to Black liberation, which encompasses the liberation of LGBTQ folks, is rooted in her experiences growing up under the impacts of the War on Drugs. Her people are migrants of the Great Migration, factory workers, church folks, Black women, hustlers and addicts, dykes, studs, femmes, queens and all people fighting for the liberation of oppressed people. Monica Simpson is the Executive Director of SisterSong, the National Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective. She uses an interdisciplinary approach to activism by calling her artistic and healing practices into the implementation of SisterSong's mission. Based in the historic West End in Atlanta, GA and founded in 1997, SisterSong amplifies and strengthens the collective voices of Indigenous women and women of color and ensures reproductive justice through securing human rights. SisterSong's headquarters is known as the “MotherHouse” and is a national organizing center for feminists of color. Toni-Michelle Williams is a community organizer and advocate for black trans justice and liberation. She serves as the Leadership Development and Programs Coordinator for the Solutions NOT Punishment Coalition (SNaP Co) in Atlanta, GA. With SnaP Co she successfully launched the Trans Leadership Connection internship program (TLC) in 2015. In 2016, the program released “The Most Dangerous Thing Out Here is the Police,” a report on trans people's experiences with Atlanta Police Department. Tiffany Lethabo King is an associate professor of Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies at Georgia State University. She is the author of The Black Shoals: Offshore Formations of Black and Native Studies (Duke University Press, 2019) and a co-editor of the book Otherwise Worlds: Against Settler Colonialism and Anti-Black Racism (Duke University Press, 2020). ---------------------------------------------------- Co-sponsored by Haymarket Books: https://www.haymarketbooks.org Sister Song: https://www.sistersong.net/ Southerns on New Ground: https://southernersonnewground.org Watch the live event recording: Buy books from Haymarket: www.haymarketbooks.org Follow us on Soundcloud: soundcloud.com/haymarketbooks

She discussed some industry changes that will have an effect on their education strategies. She also shared her experience taking Vivacity's Education in Isolation course.Who Kylie is and what she doesShe is the Programs Coordinator at Ettingshausens Performing Arts, a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) that runs pre-professional training for dancersStudents train through their junior years with their local dance school and usually some of the students are identified as having potential to take on a career in the performing arts area."We teach them (students) a lot of things that they really need to know to get out there in that very competitive environment.""Part of their learning and development is working with other dancers and simulating that audition environment, being part of a cast or an ensemble. So it's really important that the training we provide is face to face."What hurdles did Kylie face and how did she overcome them? The first challenge was "How do we regroup? How do we keep them connected and not lose all of our students?"Their company had to shut down on a Monday afternoon and then by Wednesday, same week, they were up and live on zoom, basically running a couple of classes."It was really important for me to remain positive and focused on the future and making sure that we could continue.""We were allowed to make mistakes," Kylie said relating to Covid-19's impact on the company's transition from face-to-face classes to online. What solutions did Kylie come up with when they need to create an online platform to continue education with their students online?"I was really emotional about this whole experience and having Vivacity to launch something like Education in Isolation really helped me personally, just to know that there were some other people going through the same thing."What does Kylie think is her biggest achievement after all of this?Kylie sees opportunities with collaboration for learning with choreographers, entertainers, and agencies interstate and from other countries online unlike before."Accountability is much better when they're coming into the studio. One thing I struggled with within the Zoom environment is that we're really strict on attendance because this obviously a practical course. And in the Covid environment, I really had to let go of that strict attendance."Kylie said that she foresees that the 'Industry has changed forever'. What aspects does she believe will be different and how will she apply solutions based on her training with Vivacity? How Kylie keeps motivated each day"I feel very strongly about delivering the best course, the best program for these students. They've invested a year of their life with us."Kylie Jordan on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kylie-jordan-2a114761/Ettingshausens Performing Arts Website:https://www.ettingshausens.com.au/Angela Connell on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/angelatkconnellAngela Connell Website: https://vivacity.com.au/Education in Isolation Website: https://vivacity.com.au/podcast/

Everyone needs a break from time to time. Borne the Battle - and, more importantly, its host - decided to take a short break from production. It's been a month since our last episode was published, but I was still recording interviews in that span of time. A couple of the interviews I did were with caregivers. With November being National Caregivers Month, and with this week being Thanksgiving, I decided to bring the podcast back to full form with two episodes featuring caregivers. Not only to spotlight their efforts, but to show our gratitude for the role they play in Veterans' lives. First up is Liz Rotenberry. Liz joined me at VA Central Office after the Elizabeth Dole Foundation showed interest in collaborating on a podcast. I didn't know much about Liz before we started the interview, but by the end of it I felt I had just recorded one of the more valuable interviews in the podcast's two year history. Liz, is a military caregiver for her husband, a Marine Veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom & Operation Enduring Freedom Veteran. As an Elizabeth Dole Fellow Alumna, Liz works to advocate not only for herself and her family, but for all Military and Veteran Caregivers. Liz joined the Elizabeth Dole Foundation as their Caregiver Community Program Coordinator and is now the Foundation’s Fellows Program Coordinator. Prior to becoming a military caregiver, Liz graduated from the University of Delaware with a BAS in Art and Art History. Liz worked in the architectural field as a designer for schools, medical, offices to government and military facilities, including the test sites on Proving Grounds in Arizona. The work Liz experienced with the Proving Grounds in Arizona provided an eye opening experience to what our Military train for in real life theater every day. Liz is honored to have been a part of the training and implementation of the Joint Experimentation Range Complex. It is important for Liz to represent not only the Veteran but especially the Caregiver. Liz and I talk about being a military spouse during her husband's service and how she experienced transition when her husband separated from the military. That, plus plenty of insight on her role as a caregiver.
