Today I'm excited to be joined by Sarah Scudder, President & CRO at Real Sourcing Network and a superstar in the packaging space, who is helping to change the way we think about how the products we sell, and use, are packaged. Packaging is a really important topic, because so much of our economy is based around consumption – an average consumer in the western world will handle more than 50 packaged products or items every single day! – and so the conversations around issues like the air miles of those products, the labor practices and of course, sustainability, are key. Today Sarah joins me to chat all about single vs multi-use plastics, recycling vs reusing, innovations in the packaging space, and the impact more sustainable packaging can have on both business and the environment. IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS: [06.51] The truth about fossil-based plastic production. “99% of plastics are made from oil and/or natural gas: so the greater the demand for plastic packaging, the greater the need for fossil fuels.” [09.18] A closer look at the technicalities around recycling – the different rules and regulations, lack of machinery, lack of consumer understanding and the profitability of used plastics. “Consumers don't know how to properly dispose of their plastic packaging, so they simply don't – they throw it in the trash.” [13.08] Six ways companies can quickly pivot towards greater sustainability in their packaging – without spending a fortune. [19.41] How to choose the right packaging for your business. “All plastic is not bad… multi-use plastic can actually be more sustainable than other types of paper packaging.” [22.27] How recyclable packaging is driving competitive advantage, particularly with Gen Z consumers, and the brands who are setting good examples. “If you make that investment… you need to make sure you partner with marketing to leverage that messaging.” [28.32] New innovations in packaging materials, including IKEA's mushroom packaging. [32.16] The ‘resin identification code' on your plastics – how to identify it, what it means and how it can help consumers to recycle more effectively. [36.17] Sarah's top tips for making your packaging lighter. RESOURCES AND LINKS MENTIONED: Head over to Real Sourcing Network's website now to find out more and discover how they could help you too. Sarah Swallow was introduced to bicycles, and the cycling community, at the young age of 12 when she started working for a bike rental company in Ohio. She wasn't a cyclist at the time and had no idea that one day she'd be a sponsored Adventure Cyclist. Today Sarah has carved out a cool career for herself that allows her to pursue the things in life that brings her joy and share them in a way that is authentic to herself. She's worn many hats over the years. From bike rental to, bike shop owner, route creator, race director, and spreader of stoke and adventure on 2 wheels. Her most recent exploit was on this years Tour Divide Classic where she earned a 2nd place finish. Her Tour Divide attempt almost didn't happen. As she was driving to the start her bike flew off the back of their truck and the impact cracked the carbon frame. With only days before the race she scrambled to piece her bike and gear back together and thanks to efforts from many members of this community she made it to the start! The stoke she received from the outpouring of the community set her up for a successful ride. Today's episode was supported by Ruby Coffee. There is a good chance you know and admire Sarah Burgess, and if you don’t, this episode will catch you up to speed. Sarah Burgess, also known as “Sustaina-Burgess,” has improved and spearheaded several positive changes at Philmont - namely the STEM program and Sustainability efforts done via the Philmont Conservation Department. Sarah credits her brother (also a Philmont alumni) Paul Burgess, as being the catalyst that led her to Philmont. Lovingly reflecting on her time on staff, Sarah shares stories of Search and Rescue efforts, banquet preparations at Ranger Rendezvous, “All Cons” chainsaw alarm clocks, and sunrise chapel services. Today Sarah gladly continues to make a difference via her time as a California beach clean-up coordinator and by “connecting do-er with dollars” through her work with non-profit organization, 1% For the Planet. Sarah is currently on the Board of Directors for the Philmont Staff Association, giving back to the place that helped concrete her passions for environmental change and sustainability. Sarah reminds us to intentionally strive to live free of ego, to be always curious, and to be inclusive in our conversations and the impacts we have on our precious and beautiful planet.
