In this episode, we dive into the importance and meaning of environmental and social justice across different regions. We hear from Social and Environmental Justice experts Erica Olesson, Sustainability Leader, Tonkin + Taylor in New Zealand, Scott Recker, Environmental Remediation Practice Leader at Antea Group USA, and Valentina Vieri, a Sustainability Specialist for HPC Italy. The group discusses strategies for achieving sustainable development, emphasizing the need for community engagement, regulatory compliance, and addressing vulnerable groups. ---------Guest Quotes“That term, environmental and social justice, is not one that we use very commonly in Australia and New Zealand where I've worked. We talk more about social license to operate, so it's a similar concept, perhaps a bit reversed. It's more about what the company needs to do for, what the organization needs to do for the community to be happy that they're there and to be making sure that they're responding to those community needs.” - Erica Olesson“So the term environmental justice has been in use in the U.S. for probably at least 40 years. And it's really been indoctrinated into legislation and regulation in the last 3 or 4 years. So, it has a very specific definition in the U.S. and what that really means is equal treatment of community, regardless of your race, color, national origin, your income, where you live, all of those things need to be treated equally. If we go to different parts of the world, and I work with my Inogen associates all over the planet, it means different things in different places.” - Scott Recker“Sustainability is, I think, a global vision of different topics, of different perspectives. And what we try to do is to integrate these perspectives together, these different points of view, and try to find a common solution that can bring values, not just for a company, a person, but for the environment, the people and the planet. So for everybody, this is what we try to do.” - Valentina Vieri---------Time Stamps00:00 Te Ara Oteata, or the Mount Messenger Bypass, case study (02:03) Roundtable conversation (02:22) Valentina's perspective on environmental and social justice(06:29) Scott's insights on environmental justice in the U.S.(10:55) Erica's view on social license to operate(14:17) Challenges and trends in environmental and social justice(31:47) Measuring impact and benefits---------Sponsor copyRethinking EHS is brought to you by the Inogen Alliance. Shaping Sustainable Places – Development and Construction of a Low-Carbon Built Environment

Before 2001 there were no global standardized frameworks to measure and manage greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from private and public sector operations, value chains and mitigation actions.  The creation of the GHG Protocol then allowed companies to quantify and report their greenhouse gas emissions into categories called ‘scopes'.   In this episode of Shaping Sustainable Places, one of the world's top experts @Pankaj Bhatia explains the surprising story of how the scope structure came about, how it works today, and what the future holds. We also look at how the concept has been put into action in a tangible way.    This episode's guests:    Pankaj Bhatia, Director of GHG Protocol. Oil and gas majors have long stated their intention to diversify away from fossil fuels and move toward clean energy production. However, in the last few years, many have wound back these plans, shooting for less ambitious targets or returning to their traditional business models. Against this backdrop, can climate-conscious investors hold major fossil-fuel companies to account?  On today's show, BNEF Sustainable Finance analyst Ryan Loughead hosts a conversation on oil and gas investment with panelists Annika Brouwer, Sustainability Specialist at Ninety One Asset Management; Ronan Hodge, Technical Lead from the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ); Thina Saltvedt, Chief Analyst in Sustainable Finance at Nordea Bank; and Peter Taylor, Corporate Engagement Programme Director for the Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change (IIGCC). Together they discuss the different approaches of asset managers who keep oil and gas investments on their books, the challenges around divesting from fossil-fuel holdings, and the varying strategies of oil and gas majors themselves. It's efficiency, it drives revenue based on this efficiency. It drives consumer retention, it drives employee retention. Welcome back to The Fertility Podcast, yes it's been a while since our main series was published and with this one, we're going Behind The Scenes of IVF and in our first episode, we're starting a conversation about the IVF sector's green credentials. We hear from locum Embryologist Dani Smale, who started her training at CARE Fertility London where she undertook small research projects, including looking at the environmental impact of IVF, mainly plastic use. We also talk to Annemette Arndal-Lauritzen, the CEO of the European Sperm Bank about the Communication on Progress (COP) report and talk about how whilst their primary focus is on creating healthy babies, they also want to make sure that current, as well as future generations of donor children, grow up in a healthy world and that their families are on an equal footing with any other type of family.  You will also hear a snippet from Dr Emma Saunders and  Ricard Ledin da Rosa, Sustainability Specialist at Vitrolife.  What was discussed:  With almost 2.5 million IVF cycles completed around the world every year and the number is constantly rising - can IVF go green?  It's possible that per cycle / per consumer portion of greenhouse gas emissions could be higher than any other healthcare-related procedure Dani Smale study with Care Fertility in 2018 looking at the number of cycles and the average number of different consumables for each procedure 69,500 consumables about 22,800 pieces of packaging Difficult for a city-based clinic to recycle.  Lab mentality - just get another one, rather than recycling  NHS Labs are much more conscientious in thinking about costs  Using reusable caps , but not that many units use them.  People are worried about infection control so they use disposables.  Repurposing = Glassware might be used in arts and crafts, schools, Girl Guides  The Sustainable Development Goals from the UN to choose which applied to the European Sperm Bank  - 3 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sustainable_Development_Goal_3 (Good Health and Well-being), 5 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sustainable_Development_Goal_5 (Gender Equality), 16 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sustainable_Development_Goal_16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions)   Recycle tanks  - don't use dry ice as it requires a lot of plastic Use large tanks that can be recycled and optimised for usage  Aiming to become zero neutral in 2025 in 2022 - attempting to reduce by 50% by minimising as much as possible and for the rest, they are offsetting, by planting trees.  Importance of working with a company that takes pride in protecting the environment  - perception this gives to patients. We talked about the International IVF Initiative and a session they held called ‘How Green is your IVF' which you can watch https://ivfmeeting.com/products/how-green-is-your-ivf (here ) Get in touch:  We really want to hear your thoughts on whether this matters to you. It is one thing for a company to be an innovator with the products it is developing, but it is another thing to be an innovator and trendsetter in sustainability. Clarus is a company that has strived for and excelled in both. On today's episode of Glass is in Session, we sat back down with Jamie-Clare de la Chapelle, Clarus' resident "LEED expert" and Marketing Content & Sustainability Specialist, who unpacks the journey toward sustainability for the company. De la Chapelle has learned a lot through her years, coming from an environmental non-profit, to a construction firm, and finally landing at Clarus. At each of her positions, she saw more and more how sustainable measures are driving industries to adapt and rethink their products. At Clarus, she was quickly introduced to the marketing side of how certifications are sold, and what it means to customers that Clarus is a sustainable manufacturer. “You have to move forward in a better manner than you were before,” she said, and that’s not only been true for her, but for her work at Clarus and the company’s journey to becoming LEED certified. Clarus has always been an innovator of glassboards, starting years ago with flush glassboards and glass that supports hardware, and becoming LEED certified was a big part of continuing that innovation. Currently it is the only glassboard company in the world to hold a LEED certification with environmentally sustainable products. The measures are applied not only to the products themselves but the processes designed to make them, like the closed-loop recycling machine that recycles water used to give glass baths. Give this podcast a listen to hear de la Chapelle explain the toughest road blocks are to going green, why local partnerships are the answer, and a feel for why Clarus is so devoted to their environmentally conscious mission.

RDH Building Science with Steve Kemp Steve Kemp has joined RDH Building Science in their Toronto office as a Senior Energy and Sustainability Specialist. At RDH, Steve will play a senior role in the development of their low-energy building design services, building-energy research, and team development in Toronto. Prior to RDH Steve lead MMM Groups Buildings-Sustainable division, the firm's world-renowned green building, energy modeling, and building performance monitoring group. With unsurpassed experience in building energy modeling (particularly for green buildings), Steve guides design teams through the process of choosing financially-appropriate, high-return energy-efficiency strategies. During and after construction, Steve's team works with owners to install metering systems to monitor energy use and find opportunities for improvements.   Steve Kemp – Becoming Sustainability Focused Steve grew up in Canada and attended Dalhousie University where he earned three degrees.  A B.Sc., Physics; B. Eng., Mechanical Engineering; and a M.A.Sc., Mechanical Engineering. Early on, Steve joined Enermodal Engineering and was surrounded by design decisions that embodied the same ideals as LEED prior to LEED making its stamp in the world. This was the turning point when he became sustainability focused.     The Importance of a Mentor Steve was fortunate to work at Enermodal Engineering from 1998 to 2015.  He was part of a team of eight that included three individuals he considers excellent mentors and lifelong friends. First, Stephen Carpenter, LEED Fellow in Canada. Second, John Coco who was essentially their measurement guru and started their commision group. Finally, Richard Lay who served as the mechanical design engineer.  All three influenced Steve in very positive ways.   Proudest Achievements   Steve's proudest achievement was an invitation to help design a solar community in a small town south of Alberto consisting of 52 homes.   “The design goal was to provide 90% of their heat from the sun.” – Steve Kemp   More recently, after transitioning to RDH, Steve is proud of the Joy Center for innovation and Partnerships at Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario. Steve helped win this net zero project and deliver a net zero building.   “I believe the next phase of this high performance building and partnership is going to be very much enclosure focused.” – Steve Kemp   Advice for Success and Recommended Reading Steve encourages everyone to reach out to the decision makers before meetings take place to let them know what you are thinking and discuss. This alleviates any surprises and tension in the meeting. “More decisions happen outside of the meeting room than you think.” – Steve Kemp   Steve believes that the next big challenge we have is what we are going to do with all the existing buildings. He recommends reading How Buildings Learn:  What Happens After They're Built by Stewart Brand.   To hear more about Steve's experience and leadership with sustainability, download and listen to the episode!   Learn more about Steve Kemp:   LinkedIn RDH Website   Connect with Charlie Cichetti and GBES:   Charlie on LinkedIn Green Building Educational Services GBES on Twitter Connect on LinkedIn Like on Facebook Google+ GBES Pinterest Pins GBES on Instagram   If you truly enjoyed the show, don't forget to leave a positive rating and review on iTunes.  We have prepared more episodes for the upcoming weeks, so come by again next week!
