LinkedIn is a powerful tool to find a new career – if you're using it right. By updating and optimising your LinkedIn profile, utilising the ‘Open to Work' option, connecting with the right people, and even investing in career coaching, you can really make LinkedIn work for you. In this episode, I'm joined by LinkedIn Career Coach, Sarah Burgess, to discuss the reality of LinkedIn recruitment, how companies can attract candidates, and why universities should promote LinkedIn. The Top Three LinkedIn Mistakes from a Career Coach Not having a clear profile picture. Having an unclear/misleading headline. Not having enough experience listed. About Sarah Burgess Sarah Burgess started Koru, a LinkedIn career coaching company, in 2003 after a restructure left her facing redundancy. She is a self-confessed ‘LinkedIn geek' and loves talking to people about how they can work towards finding that role they've always wanted. When she's not coaching others, you can find Sarah on a paddleboard or otherwise being active outside. Career Coaching and Open To Work Your LinkedIn profile picture and headline are two of the most important things you can optimise on your profile. These, along with your experience section, are what LinkedIn recruiters look at when actively seeking candidates for potential job openings. Sarah recommends optimising these three sections of your profile if you're looking for new career opportunities. Sarah also recommends using the ‘Open to Work' option if you're actively seeking a new role. Not only does this signify to recruiters that you're a potential candidate, you can also write a message about the type of role you're interested in and why you're leaving your current role. You can also use the #OpenToWork hashtag, which will increase your posts's reach and show it to more people in their news feeds. Sarah also recommends tweaking your profile regularly. How Companies Can Attract Top Talent Companies can also optimise their company pages to become more attractive to potential candidates. Writing a compelling about section helps give a good company overview. It really is about selling yourself as a company, too – posting as your company page and generally being active. If you're posting jobs, Sarah says to be transparent. List the salary and provide a contact at the company for candidates to speak to. Finally, we talk about the use of AI on LinkedIn. From the built-in AI features to how AI is becoming more useful in career coaching and recruitment, the use of AI is not going away. It will only get more prominent, especially since LinkedIn is owned by Microsoft. We ended our discussion with how and why universities and students need to use LinkedIn in their career search. Have you used a career coach to help you find new opportunities on LinkedIn? How do you make sure your profile is optimised and updated regularly? If you're a company, how do you make sure you stand out to potential candidates? Let me know in the comments on the episode page. Feeling nervous before and during an interview is completely normal. It is estimated that over 90% of adults get stressed during the interview process. During the interview, you should always expect to be asked a difficult question such as 'What are your weaknesses?' or 'tell me about yourself?'. Employers ask tough questions like this for a number of reasons. It is important that you are able to break the question down, remain calm and respond. In today's episode, we will look at how you can answer some of these difficult interview questions such as ‘tell me about yourself', and “where do you see yourself in 5 years”. We will also look at the importance of planning, preparation, practice, and positive psychology. On Series 7 of Paid in Puke, we're discussing every episode of Ryan Murphy's American Crime Story mini-series, Impeachment, starring Beanie Feldstein, Sarah Paulson, Cobie Smulders, Judith Light, Mira Sorvino, Edie Falco, Annaleigh Ashford, and Character Actress Margot Martindale. Episode 10 is "The Wilderness", written by show runner Sarah Burgess, and directed by Michael Uppendahl. This series finale drives home all the themes from the season including the raw deal for sexual assault survivors and women who receive any sort of media attention. We also discuss the problematic nature of "redemption stories" told without the input of the victims, and the way society expects people to accept their trauma after they're tired of hearing about it. We end it all with a fun Lunchtime Poll about which writer we would choose to tell our story. Paid in Puke returns late summer 2022 with Series 8 and a return to our film format!

Episode 9 is "The Grand Jury", written by show runner Sarah Burgess, and directed by Rachel Morrison. It's the penultimate episode in the series. This is the best of the worst of times for Monica. She actually experiences a smidge of vindication when she tells her story to 22 sympathetic (and one incredulous) members of the Grand Jury. On the other hand, Linda is taken aback at how much people don't like people who tape their friends. On the Lunchtime Poll, we talk about some famous people we would love to grill, Grand Jury-style.
We are joined today by our host Sarah Burgess, 10Eighty CEO Michael Moran, and Business Development Executive Hannah Nash. On Series 7 of Paid in Puke, we're discussing every episode of Ryan Murphy's American Crime Story mini-series, Impeachment, starring Beanie Feldstein, Sarah Paulson, and Mira Sorvino. Episode 7 is "The Assassination of Monica Lewinsky", written by Flora Birnbaum, Daniel Pearle, and showrunner, Sarah Burgess, and directed by Michael Uppendahl. If you thought it was hard to watch a young woman be detained by wolf-like lawyers in a hotel room, you may need to hold this show's proverbial beer. Whilst America was saturated with puerile BJ jokes and a disgusting Lewinsky smear campaign, the subject of that press coverage was trapped in her apartment watching the whole thing. We dive deep into how awful that must have been. On the Lunchtime Poll, we tell stories of times when a misconception about us hindered our lives.

On Series 7 of Paid in Puke, we're discussing every episode of Ryan Murphy's American Crime Story mini-series, Impeachment, starring Beanie Feldstein, Sarah Paulson, and Mira Sorvino. Episode 6 is "Man Handled", written by showrunner, Sarah Burgess, and directed by Ryan Murphy. This episode is tough to watch. It's an overdose of the patriarchy thrust into a smart, but in-over-her-head young woman who is definitely being abused and deceived for hours thanks to her slizzy friend, Linda. Most remarkably, this all happened, more or less, the way it plays out on screen. Truth truly is stranger than fiction.

What the hell is Joe Manchin doing?! Max Rose, who served in Afghanistan and won a term in Congress as a Democrat representing a red district in Staten Island and Brooklyn, explains where Manchin is coming from given that “there's not another Democrat who could win that seat”—and without it Mitch McConnell is running the Senate. Then Molly has a great talk with American Crime Story: Impeachment producer Sarah Burgess about “a really profound story about power dynamics and what emotions can lead us to,” whether anything's really changed since what boiled down to “an incredibly uncomfortable story about basically a sexual coercion” with Paula Jones, and looks back on “the cheap attacks on (Monica Lewinsky) from older women who are quote unquote feminist that were just beyond the pale.” And finally, Molly talks with Arizona Secretary of State and candidate for governor Katie Hobbs about Arizona's insane cyber ninja election audit. If you haven't heard, every single week The New Abnormal does a special bonus episode for Beast Inside, the Daily Beast's membership program. where Sometimes we interview Senators like Cory Booker or the folks who explain our world in media like Jim Acosta or Soledad O'Brien. The playwright turned screenwriter talks about what it's like to write material based on real people for the FX TV series. "My job was to adopt 20-something Monica [Lewinsky]'s point of view… and so I wrote based on Monica's story, and then I had the incredible asset of Monica Lewinsky herself reading my scripts and giving me feedback, so I basically trusted that in the writing of it, the scripts would reflect on how Monica experienced it." Sarah talks about her beginnings as a writer and how it doesn't matter where you're from. "You need something that's good on the page; that's all you need. You can live in Idaho, you can live in Ottawa, you don't have to live in The East Village or Santa Monica… if you are in any position to be able to write, I do think that having faith in what you put on the page is really what matters." Career Retrospective with Hayley Atwell on May 22, 2018. Moderated by Jenelle Riley, Variety. Hayley’s impressive body of work has established her as one of the finest actresses of her generation. Written by Manchester By the Sea’s Oscar nominated director, Kenneth Lonergan, Hayley plays the lead role, alongside Matthew Macfadyen in the adaptation of E.M. Forster’s classic novel. The series was recently launched in the US to much acclaim. Earlier this year, Hayley performed at the Hampstead Theatre in Sarah Burgess’s DRY POWDER. Directed by Anna Ledwich, Hayley took the lead role alongside Tom Riley and Aidan McArdle in the comedy which explored the PR world of New York. Later this year, Hayley will be seen starring alongside Ewan McGregor in Disney’s CHRISTOPHER ROBIN. Directed by Marc Forster, the film takes a fresh interpretation on A.A. Milne’s classic children’s story ‘Winnie-the-Pooh’ and is set to be released this August 3, 2018. Are our fears, our fear avoidance beliefs and our unhelpful interpretations of our symptoms exacerbating our relationship with this illness? Is mediation, mindfulness and positive thinking a daily coping mechanism for ME/Chronic fatigue Syndrome when faced with the enormous challenge this illness presents. Can you develop habits to manage your symptoms and regain your health – by taking control of your own path to health, taking charge of your life choices, adopting holistic approaches and believing we can be healthy. Will these daily practices stop you from being hard on yourself and why do you need to constantly adjust to accommodate this illness? Is being optimistic enough? Is the key to recovery, simply, understanding, modifying or mediation and will brain retraining techniques trigger our bodies natural ability to heal itself? How can a high energy go getter be bedridden with debilitating fatigue, brain fog and all the other symptoms associated with ME/CFS for 5 years and how did these daily coping mechanisms aide her recovery – this is Sarah Burgess story! This is Sarah's experience, in her own words, life with and without ME/CFS! Key takeaways Meditation and mindfulness are the foundation to Sarah's recovery, with a strong emphasis on self-compassion (Breathworks -Vidyamala Burch and Danny Penman), and positive visualisation and brain training (Gupta Programme) and Sarah still practises these everyday Can you benefit from the wisdom and experience of so many patients who have gone before you It's ok, to want to try and learn from their experience, to be envious, to want your health back Taking control of your health and the paths to a healthier you are exhausting, but you can't wait for a cure – for someone to come up with a well evidenced treatment for CFS Your brain is really powerful and its protective response to this illness keeps you in a sympathetic fight or flight mode and a holistic approach may be needed The brain and body must be treated simultaneously Brain training techniques can trigger your body's natural ability to heal itself Why breaking unhelpful behaviour patterns that are associated to your cognitive response as protector may strengthen your recovery We know accepting a long-term illness is a scary thought as your new life will be quite different from your former life, there will be a sense of loss Acknowledging this illness is the first step – the key to coping is acknowledging, understanding, and then adjusting to this illness When or how you perform your routine isn't important, but minimising your body's need to adjust to this change is imperative You don't need to be perfect; you just need to keep trying, believing and visualising Promise me, you will stop being hard on yourself & learn to be kind to yourself! This is our journey unlocking our visibility! Together we can still make a difference. In what turned out to be a surprisingly contentious discussion (our panel is passionately divided), we discuss Amy Spalding's The Summer of Jordi Perez (and the Best Burger in Los Angeles). Molly suggests Boy Meets Boy by David Levithan. Kim suggests To All The Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han and The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner. Amy mentions When Dimple Met Rishi as a potential readalike (before we talk readalikes). Lindsey suggests Strangers in Paradise by Terry Moore. Cash Money suggests the movie Sarah Burgess is a Big Loser. Nathan mentions Pink by Lili Wikerson but vacillates on whether it is a good readalike or not.
Power comes in different flavors, asserted the French theorist Michel Foucault. Sarah Burgess is a playwright and writer for "The Tenant" (Woodshed Collective) and Naked Angels podcast series, "Naked Radio." She has been a writer-in-residence at SPACE on Ryder Farm and the Cape Cod Theatre Project. Burgess is a member of the WP Lab and is an Ars Nova Play Group alum. Her play "Dry Powder" was a recipient of the 2016 Laurents/Hatcher Foundation Award and a finalist for the Blackburn prize. Other plays include "Camdenside" and "FAIL: Failures."
Dry Powder, a new play that just debuted at The Public Theater, is bringing the same discussions about the world of finance to the stage as the film The Big Short brought to the movies. The title refers to cash reserves or highly liquid assets, which are central to playwright Sarah Burgess's plot about an executive facing a PR nightmare after throwing himself a lavish party at the same time his firm is forcing layoffs. The play comes to The Public with a big endorsement as co-recipient of this year’s Laurents/Hatcher Foundation Award, given to an unproduced full-length play by an emerging playwright. The award comes with a $25,000 prize for the playwright and $50,000 for the company first mounting it. It also boasts a star-studded cast, featuring Claire Danes, Hank Azaria and John Krasinski, in his stage debut. Meanwhile, its director, Thomas Kail, has another show running now in New York — perhaps you've heard of it: Hamilton. New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood lets us know his investment in the production.
A sit down with David Cherry to talk the about the soccer season, StuCo and Scholars Bowl, then a talk with Bayley Reiswig of the SAT, Brent Unruh's sports medicine moment, and lastly we stalk with Sarah Burgess to dicuss St. Thomas Aquinas.
No Jack this week so Anaseed is joined by Sarah Burgess to chat about comics... Well that was the intention.
