The Praxeology of Privacy: Freedom Tech vs Mass Surveillance | Max Hillebrand

Privacy isn't about having something to hide. It's about preserving the freedom to act, communicate, and coordinate without coercion. In this episode of THE Bitcoin Podcast, Walker sits down with privacy advocate, cypherpunk, and Freedom Tech builder Max Hillebrand to discuss his new book, The Praxeology of Privacy. Max explains how Austrian economics and cypherpunk philosophy intersect, why privacy is a natural consequence of self-ownership and property rights, and how surveillance distorts economic calculation in much the same way that money printing distorts markets. The conversation explores: Why privacy is fundamentally tied to freedom The economic consequences of surveillance CBDCs and the future of financial control Why corporations and governments increasingly operate as surveillance partners The role of Bitcoin in creating a parallel economy Tor, VPNs, encryption, and network-level privacy Nostr's growing ecosystem and why developer adoption matters more than user counts Operational security (OpSec) in both the digital and physical world Signal's limitations and the future of decentralized private communications White Noise, Marmot, and the next generation of unstoppable encrypted messaging How Freedom Tech can make coercion more expensive and liberty more accessible Max also shares his vision for a future where money, communication, identity, and publishing are all decentralized, permissionless, and resistant to censorship. Whether you're new to privacy or already deep down the cypherpunk rabbit hole, this conversation provides a powerful framework for understanding why privacy matters—and what practical steps you can take to reclaim it. We now know that things like access to affordable housing and healthy food, good jobs that provide a livable income, education, safe environments, and other factors that make up what we call the “social determinants of health” are more powerful in promoting health of individuals and communities than health care itself. Sir Michael Marmot has been a pioneer in advancing this concept and has created what are called Marmot Cities and Towns or Marmot Places. One nurse who has worked with Marmot is Charlotte McArdle, a Global Nurse Consultant, Visiting Professor Ulster University Belfast, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, and a former government chief nurse officer in the United Kingdom. On April 22, 2026, HealthCetera producer and host Diana J. Mason, PhD, RN, talked with McArdle about Marmot Places and its relevance for people in the United States. This interview first aired on HealthCetera in the Catskills on WIOX Radio on April 22, 2026. The post Marmot Places appeared first on HealthCetera.

In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, brought to you by Topo Athletic, we are joined by Claire "Marmot" Dumont, a mapmaker, writer at The Trek, and thru-hiker who has completed the AT, Mountains to Sea Trail, Oregon Coast Trail, JMT, and more. In this one, Marmot walks us through what it's like to spend three months on trail with your dad, how a Fulbright fellowship brought her to Jordan to research land ethics and outdoor recreation, and what happened when COVID shut down the borders and kicked her off the Jordan Trail mid-hike. She also shares the story of assisting a rescue on Mount Washington and hitching out to town in the ambulance, what it meant to find a queer trail family on the AT and how she thinks about femininity and queer identity in spaces that have traditionally skewed pretty dude-bro, and why she will never apologize for hiking in a dress with an AeroPress in her pack. We wrap the show with a new YouTube channel from The Trek, some kick ass trail days we'll be hosting, how a billionaire game developer has been buying up thousands of acres of wilderness in North Carolina, asking whether we'd rather be able to thrive off of 4 hours of sleep, or have the full month of September off each year, the triple crown of BBQ foods, why Chaunce now likes inflatable sleeping pads, we reignite the gas station bathroom debate, and we opine on whether a listener should hike the AT as a flip flop or NOBO. "It's a dangerous business to help people out of slavery. But so what? We have to do this. This is a moral obligation, an ethical obligation, as a technical possibility, and a lot of fun. So the risks of it are real and substantial and have been forever, especially in the last 30, 40 years or so. Countless builders have gotten into serious trouble or even been kidnapped or killed. And that's a hard fact of reality that we have to deal with. But I'm way more scared of the alternative of not working on this code and seeing us lose the grip on freedom that we have, rather than increasing it and making it flourish. So for me, it's really a no-brainer. They're so angry about this technology precisely because it works real damn good, and that's what we have to double down." ~ Max Hillebrand I sat down with Max Hillebrand for a conversation that ended up being far more optimistic than I expected. In this Chat, we dive deep into the mechanics of digital privacy, breaking down exactly how CoinJoin achieves trustless coordination and why the "code liberation" movement is just getting started. What happens when everyone becomes a programmer through AI agents and vibe coding? We then explore this explosion of productivity and how it feeds into new protocols like Marmot and the White Noise application. Finally, we discuss the philosophy of the "Second Realm" and why the tools to exit the system are already here, ready for us to build a quiet, global resistance against surveillance. Yeah, we're starting the year off right, Wildings - so grab a snack, tell a friend, stay curious and, as always, keep it WILD!!!Parents: visit our website to help your kids contribute jokes or favorite sounds, or to send us a message.Timestamps for this episode are available below.00:00 - Episode 18 Intro01:19 - Reelin' in the (New) Years with Bobby the Bigfoot12:42 - Favorite Sound13:31 - Call for Submissions13:58 - The Expanding Universe with Wendy Freedman  23:51 - Riddle Clue24:19 - New Year's Resolutions26:19 - Joke Time!27:07 - Cryptid Corner: The Barbegazi29:25 - Unpacking the Big Move33:08 - Grandparent Stories: Naomi and Levi's Grandmother Nonna40:07 - Riddle Answer40:40 - Preview of Episode 1941:32 - Credits, Call for Reviews, and Word of Mouth42:05 - Blooperswildinterest.com

It’s New Year’s Eve. At midnight, many of us will be raising glasses, kissing loved ones, and trying to remember the words to “Auld Lang Syne.” That song, if you don’t recall, begins with a question: “Should old acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind?” We here at Soundside say, NO! We will remember. This year, we brought on a couple new producers, and they have been fantastic additions to our team! I am super excited to see how they help us grow. But we will never forget those who helped us get here. So, today, we’re playing back some of the great work by former Soundside producers. In this episode of THE Bitcoin Podcast, Walker America is joined by open-source developer Jeff G to explore the growing clash between freedom tech and the surveillance state. They discuss White Noise, a decentralized messaging app built on Bitcoin-adjacent cryptography and Nostr, and the Marmot protocol that enables secure, private communication without centralized choke points. The conversation expands into the broader implications of digital identity, metadata surveillance, AI-driven monitoring, and the shift from physical repression to financial and digital control. Together, they make the case for decentralized money, private speech, and open protocols as essential tools for preserving individual sovereignty in an increasingly monitored world. This follows a sharp rise in rent prices in recent years, a trend that the policy aims to curb. Violations face steep financial punishments. Property owners who violate the freeze risk fines of up to a year's rent plus compensation for tenants. And whistleblowers can earn 20% of any fines collected. While billed as relief, rent freezes are a form of price control that can often yield adverse effects. Property owners may reduce upkeep, shift investments away from housing, or demand informal payments to compensate for the loss of income. This can create shortages and deteriorating conditions, making it disproportionately harder for new or lower-income residents to find affordable housing amid the backdrop of authoritarian rule and immense digital repression. We interview Professor Christopher Summerfield from Oxford University about his new book "These Strange New Minds: How AI Learned to Talk and What It". AI learned to understand the world just by reading text - something scientists thought was impossible. You don't need to see a cat to know what one is; you can learn everything from words alone. This is "the most astonishing scientific discovery of the 21st century."People are split: some refuse to call what AI does "thinking" even when it outperforms humans, while others believe if it acts intelligent, it is intelligent. Summerfield takes the middle ground - AI does something genuinely like human reasoning, but that doesn't make it human.Sponsor messages:========Google Gemini: Google Gemini features Veo3, a state-of-the-art AI video generation model in the Gemini app. Sign up at https://gemini.google.comTufa AI Labs are hiring for ML Engineers and a Chief Scientist in Zurich/SF. Today Colin is joined by Marmot's Vice President & GM of Technical Apparel, Jon Graden.Marmot has been the poster child of what we've been calling the 'zombie brand' here on The Rock Fight. Not quite what it once was but not entirely irrelevant either, a zombie brand is a former 'it' brand that has fallen out of favor with retailers and doesn't have the juice it once did. Marmot is one of the OG outdoor brands that the outdoor industry was built upon but after a series of acquisitions and big swings that didn't pay off, they've lost some of their clout. Jon, who comes from the fashion side of the apparel industry, has been working for the past 18 months to change that. And as the Marmot team heads out to sell for Spring 2026, Jon has something to say about where Marmot is today and where he thinks the brand is heading.Check out hundreds of wildly cool products by visiting and shopping at Garage Grown Gear! Thanks for listening! Today on The Rock Fight Colin is joined by Rock Fight Consigliere Eoin Comerford and Producer Dave to discuss several news stories that paint a picture about the long term health of the outdoor industry. First they look at the recent earnings report by Newell (parent company of Marmot, Coleman, and Ex Officio, among others) which shows how the outdoor industry may be on the same path that was recently traveled by the surf industry. Eoin recaps how many iconic surf brands ended up being owned by Authentic Brands and how that past may serve as a cautionary tale for outdoor brands facing similar challenges. (02:55)Next they talk about a recent report that Dick's Sporting Goods is quietly leaving outdoor behind as it closes most of their remaining Public Land and Moosejaw locations. They talk about how this move will impact the outdoor retail landscape. (18:29)Then they dig into event news including the report that Europe's biggest summer show, OutDoor, is going on "hiatus" as well as the announcement of Outdoor Retailer's Industry Day. (29:15)Lastly it's a combined Parting Shot as the hosts weigh in on the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable's endorsement of Trump Secretary of the Interior, Doug Burgum, as well as the organizations who co-signed that endorsement including the OIA, People For Bikes, and REI. They look at what missteps may have been made and what the focus should be going forward. Here's an episode for movie buffs, music nuts, animal lovers, and anyone dealing with anxiety. Yes, that's quite the range in a 40-minute chat, but Dr Dan Blumstein delivers them all in a fascinating conversation with Chris about FEAR. Dan is a professor of conservation biology at UCLA and author of the book The Nature of Fear: Survival Lessons from the Wild. He spent his career trying to better understand the emotion by looking at marmots. He says that animals can help us better understand ourselves. And we will explore what makes a scream a scream, and how to embrace our fears.  This show would not be possible without listener support.
