We talk a lot about — and when I say 'we,' I mean the wider queer community — how upsetting it is that queer bars and clubs are closing at an accelerated rate. But I think the bigger tragedy is the disappearance of queer cafés.And maybe it's wrong to pit them against each other, but queer cafés offer that beautiful intermediate step. They're not as full-on or intimidating as a bar or a club, and they're places where you can just be. There's no pressure to perform, no need to match the thump of a bassline — just you, your overpriced oat flat white, and the comforting hum of conversations that sound a little more like home. One of the absolute best queer cafés that ever existed — and I won't hear any counterarguments — was First Out Café in Central London. Before it closed in 2011 to make way for yet another railway construction project, it was a sanctuary. A place where you could nervously nurse a tea while pretending to read the free gay magazines that used to exist, all the while sneaking glances at the other queers who had found refuge there too. It's also where today's guest, drag king extraordinaire Mr Wesley Dykes, took his first tentative steps into queerdom. Growing up between Lagos and South London, Wesley navigated the complexities of identity, family expectations, and self-acceptance. And when that weight felt a little too heavy, First Out Café was there — offering a cup of tea and the reassuring presence of a community.Other episodes about First Out Cafe'The First Gay Place That I Went Inside...' - with Alex Iantaffi from Gender Stories PodcastFirst Out Cafe, London (with Ali Brumfitt)Follow meInstagram: www.instagram.com/lostspacespodFacebook: www.facebook.com/lostspacespodTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@lostspacespodSign up to the Queer Word newsletter: https://queer-word.beehiiv.com/subscribeSupport meBuy Me A Coffee: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/lostspacespodFollow my guestInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/mrwesleydykes/

When I first moved to London I had this friend who I would go to bars and clubs with. And, he was totally, 100% a friend of convenience. In fact, the only reason we spent any time together is because neither of us had any other friends. But I always look back on that friendship with a great deal of affection — and I think that one of the gifts of being queer is that you end up making friends with people you'd never otherwise meet, and that can open up your world in surprising ways. It can push you to do things you wouldn't have otherwise done, like going to places that you wouldn't choose to go to. Which brings us to this week's guest—Nick Baker is co-host of the Incomplete Geeks podcast, a show for all your gay geeky needs, from TV shows to comics. But many years ago he too was new to London and he too had a friendship of convenience, which led him to a club he wouldn't have gone to on his own. At the time he was into the fizzy, frothy pop of mainstream gay places like G-A-Y and Heaven, but this friendship exposed him to the much cooler Ghetto (honestly, I'm not exaggerating when I say that - if you speak to queers of a certain age in London, Ghetto was THE place to be). The lyric to that very famous 80s TV theme song is 'sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name'. Whilst I think that's true I also think there are times where you want to go where nobody knows your name and where there's absolutely no risk of running in to anybody that you even vaguely know. It's that type of space that gave this week's guest - scholar, therapist and host of the Gender Studies podcast Alex Iantaffi - the courage to actually go through the front door and start to explore their queerness for the first time. And so, in this episode, Alex takes us back to the 90s and sits us down in a corner seat in London's First Out Cafe to show us the magical, open, friendly space that made them feel welcome. Transgender Day of Remembrance on Nov. 20 honors the memory of those killed in acts of anti-transgender violence worldwide. That violence is an increasing problem in the U.S., where 57 transgender people died by homicide in 2021, a record. Many were women of color. “This is a hard week for many trans folks because that violence brings an increased visibility. They are often very afraid for young people, and that fear is not unfounded,” Alex Iantaffi, a Minneapolis family therapist who works with transgender people, told MPR News host Cathy Wurzer Thursday. “It is a tender conversation about holding space and support for people to process the impact of systemic violence, as well as to be reminded that as a community, we also have beauty, resiliency and mutual support.” Related reporting Listen Allina Health addresses breast health gap for transgender patients March On Transgender Day of Visibility, White House announces moves to expand trans rights 2018 'You cannot erase us out of existence': Transgender Minnesotans rally in Twin Cities According to the LGBTQ advocacy group GLAAD, the day of remembrance began in 1999 as a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in Boston in 1998. Tessa “Tess” Gittleman, MA, LMFT, is a Relational Therapist, Public Speaker, and System's Coach currently working at her private practice, Talk Tutor, PLLC, in Golden Valley, MN. Tess' background is eclectic, working in Advertising, Food Media, and with incarcerated populations before a chronic health diagnosis forced a pivot. Tess realized what she really loved was connecting to people in meaningful ways, and decided to become the one thing she said she never would: a therapist. After pivoting to mental health, Tess worked across residential and school-based settings, providing services to people across a variety of backgrounds, from queer to conservative, seven to seventy five, individuals and groups. She specializes in helping people who are “acutely aware of the problem” but feel helpless to change it despite outward success. These people often identify as perfectionistic, anxious, and/or with Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder. Her approach can best be described as collaborative, transparent, and humorous, borrowing from Existential, Narrative, and Internal Family System's approaches.  In addition to her clinical and coaching work, Tess is the Treasurer of the Minnesota Association of Marriage and Family, and is currently working towards being an AAMFT Approved Supervisor under the supervision of Dr. Alex Iantaffi, LMFT, and Shawn Neel, LMFT. As a supervisor, Tess specializes in providing clinical support to clinicians who struggle with chronic illness, or are struggling with clients who can't be “out-smarted.” Eric Fawcett, M.A., is a postgraduate, pre-licensure Marriage & Family Therapist. Eric specializes in assisting clients to bridge seemingly irreconcilable parts of themselves, and bridge what feel like irreconcilable differences with others. Before pursuing his MFT degree, Fawcett spent three decades as a recording artist, as a creative entrepreneur partnering with major corporations, and as a published writer and speaker addressing the relational joys and challenges of the collaborative process. Fawcett has long believed that the training MFTs receive prepares them to work with people-systems far beyond couples and families. In his private practice, Eric works not only with individuals and families, but also with organizations seeking to increase trust and cohesion among its members. Eric is thrilled to be partnering with Tess Gittleman in the creation of Attunement Architects, a practice committed to improving the relational health of organizations of all kinds, from businesses to spiritual communities to universities.Links From the Episode:Tess's Website: www.TalkTutor.org Tess's email: Tess@TalkTutor.orgMore about Eric at his private practice website: www.attunerelational.comContact Eric at eric@attunerelational.comJoin the Twin Cities Wellness Collective™: https://www.tcwellnesscollective.com/

Proposed Legislation Threatens Trans Rights Nationwide Since the start of the 2021 legislative session, members of more than 30 state legislatures have proposed over 100 bills that would limit transgender children’s ability to play sports, or access gender-affirming medical care such as puberty blocking medications. One such proposal, restricting access to gender-affirming medical treatments for anyone under 18, passed the Arkansas State Legislature earlier this month, over the veto of Republican governor Asa Hutchinson. Ira talks to Kate Sosin, LGBTQ+ reporter for The 19th News, about the scope of bills limiting access to medical care. Sosin explains why lawmakers say they’re pushing them—and what misconceptions about both trans kids and trans adults may be fueling these proposals.  We had editing and consultation help for this segment from Jaye McAuliffe. Why Gender-Affirming Healthcare Is ‘Lifesaving Care’ State legislatures around the country are proposing bills to remove access to gender-affirming healthcare for transgender youth. Meanwhile, doctors, parents, and trans adults warn that restricting access to commonplace interventions, like puberty blocking medications, will endanger the mental health and social well-being of trans children across the country.  Learn more about the bills passing through statehouses this year. The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Medical Association, the Pediatric Endocrine Society have all condemned bills like Arkansas’ AB1570, which passed the state legislature in early April. It prohibits healthcare providers from giving puberty blockers or gender-affirming hormones to anyone under the age of 18. The World Professional Organization For Transgender Healthcare (WPATH), which produces standards of care for transgender youth and adults, has stated that the ability to pause puberty supports the mental health of trans youth while they navigate their gender identities. Ira talks to pediatric endocrinologist Kara Connelly and family therapist Alex Iantaffi about their work with trans youth, and what gender-affirming health care provides, to young people and throughout a person’s lifespan.  We had editing and consultation help for this segment from Jaye McAuliffe. What Does It Mean To Be Alive? What is life? This question has caused headaches for humanity for centuries. But if it’s taken out of philosophy classes or past Frankenstein’s monster, this question becomes an important legal and biological discussion. If we’re searching for life on other planets, how will we know when we’ve found it? Scientists throughout history have come up with what they think the constraints of life are, whether it needs to meet certain physiological criteria, or reproduce. But despite hundreds, if not thousands of theories that have been proposed, the scientific community can’t come to a consensus about what makes something alive. The complexities of defining life are the subject of the new book, Life’s Edge: The Search For What It Means To Be Alive, by New York Times science columnist and author Carl Zimmer. He joins Ira to talk about the creatures that complicate our understanding of life, and if synthetic biology and artificial intelligence might ever be classified as alive.

A generation ago, few people thought much about understanding gender. Then, gender seemed simple and straightforward: boy or girl, male or female. Things are different today. Merriam-Webster declared they the 2019 word of the year, and there's increasing recognition of the fact that gender is not strictly binary. What does this have to do with boys? Well, our boys are living in a time when it's okay to openly discuss and think about gender. Many of our boys have peers who self-identify as gender-fluid or genderqueer -- and even if they don't have personal friends or acquaintances who are navigating the gender continuum, our sons are growing up in the world in which they (and we) can't assume a person's gender based on physical appearance or anything else. Also: some of us are learning that children we pegged as our daughters might actually be our sons. For many parents (and teachers) -- who grew up in times and places where gender wasn't discussed or pondered but assumed -- this "new" reality can be a bit confusing. But as Alex Iantaffi tells us, gender fluidity has been a part of human experience for millennia. "Gender creativity has always existed across time and space," says Dr. Iantaffi, a licensed marriage and family therapist, parent and author of numerous books about gender. "But at some point in modern science, we have developed this idea of a gender binary and now we think that's 'normal' and 'natural.'" This is a must-listen episode for modern parents who are interested in understanding gender. In this episode, Jen, Janet & Alex discuss: Real-life pandemic parenting All the terms: LGBTQ+, LGBTQIA, LGBTQ2S, cisgender, trans, non-binary, pansexual, gender fluid, intersex, heteronormative The difference between gender & sexuality Is the internet responsible for gender curiosity? Content warning: mentions of transphobia in healthcare towards the end of the talk during the Q&AThis is a talk given by Alex Iantaffi at the University of Minnesota for the School of Nursing (co-sponsored by the Office of Equity and Diversity and by the Gender and Sexuality Center for Trans and Queer Life). Here's the description of the talk:Gender liberation is often viewed as beneficial for trans, nonbinary or gender expansive people. In this talk, Dr. Iantaffi posits how a rigid gender binary is part of the ongoing settler-colonial project and, as such, it is a form of historical, cultural and social trauma that impacts everyone's health, albeit in different ways. Gender liberation, in this context, is then not only desirable for everyone, but also essential to the larger framework of healing justice, within which healing can be viewed as collective, interdependent, and sustainably rooted in community.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/genderstories)

Welcome to our GenderGP Podcast, where we will be discussing some of the issues affecting the trans and non-binary community in the world today, together with my co-host Marianne Oakes, a trans woman herself, and our head of therapy.   Dr. Helen Webberley: Today I am really excited to welcome MJ Barker. Thank you very much for joining Marianne and myself. And as always, I’m going to hand over to you to introduce yourself and tell us a bit about you and your work and your interest in this area. MJ Barker: Absolutely. So yeah. MJ Barker, Meg-John Barker for my professional writing work, and my background is I've been an academic in psychology and sociology. I've also been a therapist for many years and an activist on LGBT matters for a long time. But I've given most of that up recently to become a full-time writer. So the main thing that I do is to write books, self-help books and gender relationships and sex, and also graphic guides comic books about introducing various ideas. So I've written a Queer: A Graphic History and the Follow Up on Gender which is out in November actually. And I've also written the book Life Isn't Binary, so it's taking non-binary thinking about gender and applying it to all kinds of other things, with Alex Iantaffi, my co-author for that. I also to have a podcast on sex and gender and relationships with Justin Hancock, the sex educator. It's theMeg-John and Justin podcast. So we've got plenty of stuff on trans there. And I guess in this area I mean doing a lot of kind of non-binary activism is I can definitely speak to non-binary issues. And then Alex and I in our book How toUnderstand Your Gender, we talk a lot, and then Life Isn't Binary, we talk a lot about breaking down binaries, including kind of a man-woman binary obviously, and gay-straight binary, but also maybe the trans-cis binary,
