If the Mets' 2-0 win over the Twins yesterday seemed like a high-wire act as far as shutouts go, that's because Tylor Megill, Phil Bickford, Trevor Gott, Brooks Raley, and Adam Ottavino combined to pitch a four-hitter whose peripherals have rarely been seen in Major League Baseball. The Twins got a triple by Willi Castro, had stolen bases from Alex Kiriloff and Royce Lewis, drew six walks, and left nine runners on base. The last time that a team gave up a triple, at least two steals, half a dozen or more walks, and nine-plus stranded runners? It was September 26, 1984, in Montreal, where Kurt Kepshire went the distance for the Cardinals with seven hits allowed, seven walks, eight strikeouts, and so much traffic that the Expos left 12 men on base, including Andre Dawson at third after his triple (and a two-out walk to Gary Carter before Dan Driessen grounded out). The 1976 Royals also got blanked at home by a hard-working Brewers trio of Bill Travers, Ray Sadecki, and Danny Frisella, failing to capitalize on a Frank White triple or seven walks, as they went 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position and White got thrown out at third on another play by Sixto Lezcano. The Yankees blanked the White Sox, 1-0, in a 13-inning game on May 24, 1968, Bobby Cox scoring the winning run on a Sandy Alomar Sr. throwing error. Before that, it's all pre-integration games: Giants-Dodgers in 1903, A's-Browns in 1914, Cardinals-Pirates in 1916, Tigers-Browns in 1922, and Giants-Pirates in 10 innings in 1946.That 1946 game is unique because Lee Handley had two triples off Giants hurler Monty Kennedy, who tossed a 10-inning complete game and was himself 2-for-3 with a double. Too bad for him and Pittsburgh, both came with two outs, and he was left at third each time, as were 10 other Pirates runners around the diamond. The Giants got the go-ahead run in the 10th when Sid Gordon walked, went to third on a Goody Rosen single, and scored on Jack Graham's fly to center. It wasn't a sacrifice fly because RBI flyouts were just RBI flyouts from 1940-54.Is it weird that four of the nine all-time stressful shutouts of this type were thrown by New York teams? Maybe. It's never easy around here, but it sure beats giving up 40. This is a public episode. Those fans should think twice before heckling Joc Pederson again. Pederson clearly heard the intense heckling directed at him in the eighth inning, but he directed his focus on Trevor Gott's pitch and hammered a go-ahead two-run homer. Pederson has essentially been baseball's best hitter so far this season, and Monday night's homer may have been the highlight of the season thus far.Luis González also played hero after Jake McGee surrendered a game-tying homer in the bottom of the eighth. For González, who's filling in for an injured Steven Duggar, he sure picked a good time to hit his first career home run. What a gritty win this was for the San Francisco Giants, who had this one-game "series" in Milwaukee tacked on to the end of a 10-game road trip due to the delayed start to the season. This would've been a successful trip even with a loss on Monday night; the gritty, comeback win was pure icing on the cake. The Giants went with a bullpen game, and they were going up against reigning Cy Young award winner Corbin Burnes. The bullpen kept the game close until the Giants were able to get Burnes out of the game, and they pounced on a Brewers bullpen that was without Devin Williams and Josh Hader. The SF Giants are 12-5 with a +39 run differential. It's been a great start to the season, even though they're far from full strength and they have yet to get some key cogs, like Darin Ruf, going at the plate. They had an 8-3 road trip, their best winning percentage on a trip of 10 or more games since 1994. Now they come home to face the Oakland A's, with Carlos Rodón back on the mound. The Giants are well positioned for another victory tonight, although the A's are playing better than people expected after trading away most of their best players this past offseason.Find and follow Locked On Giants on your favorite podcast platforms:

The Brewers survived a three-game set in Philly by the skin of their teeth with a 1-0 victory on Sunday Night Baseball thanks to the best start of the year by Eric Lauer. It may have been the start of the year in the National League to this point. Lauer tossed six shutout innings with a new career-high 13 strikeouts - tying Teddy Higuera's team record for strikeouts by a lefty in a game. Despite his dominant outing, he left with a no decision. When he exited the contest, the game was still scoreless as the Brewers could not figure out Aaron Nola for the Phillies. They did figure out old friend Corey Knebel in the 9th to push across the game's only run thanks to some aggressive baserunning from Jace Peterson and a situational sac fly from Christian Yelich. There are some mind-blowing numbers from the offense's cold start, so Dom (@Dom_Cotroneo) breaks it all down and ponders if there is a strategy to help the Brewers moving forward with the bats... Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about the virtual 2020 Winter Meetings, which get started today and last all week. The San Francisco Giants enter the Winter Meetings with several items on their wish list, some of which they may seek to address this week. It was at last year's Winter Meetings that the Giants signed Kevin Gausman to a one-year, $9M deal, and they also made the Will Wilson trade. This year, what the the Giants' biggest needs? As Ben describes, it's clearly starting pitching, first and foremost. They also need a versatile left-handed hitter capable of playing third and second, someone who can platoon with Evan Longoria, whose struggles against righties are longstanding enough that it's time to limit his exposure against them. Right-handed veteran relief pitching is also a need, after Trevor Gott and Sam Coonrod failed to take on high leverage roles in 2020, a development that may have cost them a spot in the postseason.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. It was predicted to be a non-tender bloodbath across baseball, but it was mostly business as usual, outside of a few surprises. The Giants were among the majors' most active team, non-tendering five players off their 40-man roster, agreeing to one-year deals to avoid arbitration with six, and tendering contracts to two arbitration eligible players. Tyler Anderson, Daniel Robertson, Melvin Adon, Chadwick Tromp, and Rico Garcia were non-tender by the Giants. Donovan Solano and Reyes Moronta were tendered contracts but not yet signed, and the Giants reached one-year deals with Alex Dickerson, Darin Ruf, Austin Slater, Jarlin Garcia, Wandy Peralta, and Trevor Gott.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about how no team improved more offensively than the 2020 Giants. He also talks about how their pitchers fared from a numbers perspective in 2020, after looking at the offense on yesterday's show. But first he follows up on yesterday's discussion in which he speculated that the Giants were probably MLB's most improved offensive team in 2020, and that turned out to be the case. The Giants ranked first in non-pitcher wRC+ improvement from 2019 to 2020 by a significant margin. Going even further, the Giants were a dramatic 50% better at home in 2020 than they were in 2019, which was by far the biggest jump of any team. Notably, their opponents only improved by 6% at Oracle Park, meaning that the Giants' improvements cannot be explained by changes to Oracle Park, as some have said.In looking at how Giants pitchers fared in 2020 from a numbers perspective, Ben notes that overall, they were a below average pitching team. Their starters were better than their relievers by fWAR relative to the rest of the league, although the starters had a worse ERA than the relievers. It looks like the Giants' starters were a bit unlucky, and they were in fact a solid group, headlined by excellent performances by Kevin Gausman and Drew Smyly, and solid performance by Tyler Anderson. In the bullpen, several members had fine seasons, but a few blow ups seemingly cost the Giants a shot at the postseason. Trevor Gott and Sam Coonrod did not have great years, when the dust settled.PostmatesFor a limited time, Postmates is giving our listeners ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS of free delivery credit for your first SEVEN days. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers questions from fans about the San Francisco Giants' plans for the trading deadline, what they'll do with Mike Yastrzemski long term, Kapler's decision to use Trevor Gott in a one-run game on Monday, and much more. Most questions were understandably about the upcoming trading deadline, which is next Monday, August 31st. Just like last year, the Giants find themselves playing great and in playoff contention as the deadline approaches. Contrary to popular opinion among fans, the Giants navigated last year's deadline beautifully. Ben believes the Giants will take a similar approach this year, balancing the present and the future. They won't sacrifice much in the way of future value for purely present value, but they will look to upgrade the 2020 team while acquiring pieces for the future. It remains unclear how the unique circumstances will affect trade activity. The season could be cancelled at any minute due to the virus; there will only be one month left in the season after the deadline; and the postseason now includes more teams and has a different structure. Nevertheless, Giants president of baseball operations likes to be active with his roster, and he has a strong history in trades, so next week's deadline should be exciting for Giants fans.Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about the San Francisco Giants' devastating loss to the Angels. Once again, the Giants had a 9th-inning lead. Once again, Gabe Kapler elected to use Trevor Gott. And once again, Gott gave up a big home run that stunned the Giants. It was the third straight game in which the Giants lost after having a lead in the 9th inning. On Friday they blew a five-run 9th-inning lead; on Saturday they blew a three-run 9th-inning lead; and yesterday, it was a one-run 9th-inning lead. All three times, Trevor Gott was on the mound. Kapler's decision to use Gott on Monday was deservedly criticized. On the one hand, he was showing faith and confidence in a struggling reliever. On the other, he entrusted a one-run lead to someone who was likely struggling with confidence and the ability to get hitters out. Gott has now allowed 11 earned runs and five home runs over his last 1.1 innings pitched. On the bright side, the Giants keep having late leads. Once again, the offense was strong as it tallied six runs. Mike Yastrzemski continued his MVP-like season with a big two-out, two-strike, two-run double in the 6th inning that gave the Giants a 6-5 lead. Earlier in the game Brandon Belt hit a two-run home run in the first inning. Tyler Anderson started for the Giants and pitched better than his final line. He struck out eight batters in five innings and issued just one walk, but he did allow a home run to Mike Trout and ultimately allowed five earned runs in those five innings. Regardless, the Giants' rotation has been pretty good as of late, and the offense has been solid all season. The Giants' bullpen has been extremely bad and has cost them numerous victories. If Gott hadn't blown leads in his last three appearances, the Giants would be 11-13. The Giants have had leads in 11 of their 16 losses. They could easily be a .500 team or even better. Instead, they're 8-16 and could be done and buried in pandemic-shortened 60-game season. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about the San Francisco Giants' historic collapses on Friday and Saturday against the Oakland Athletics. On Friday, the Giants took a 7-2 lead into the 9th inning. Trevor Gott, who has become the team's closer over the season's first month, starting the inning. He got an out against the first batter he faced, Matt Chapman, but things quickly went down hill from there. After allowing a home run and a walk, Robbie Grossman hit a ground ball to first baseman Wilmer Flores. The ground ball took Flores' momentum towards the first base bag. He fielded it cleanly and took a step or two towards first base, where he could have easily recorded the second out of the inning. Instead, he inexplicably decided to throw towards second base, where Brandon Crawford caught the ball but took his foot off the base and tried to tag the runner. No out was recorded on the play. Instead of two outs and a runner on second with a 7-3 lead, it was two on, one out, and a 7-3 lead. Gott then hit Khris Davis, which brought up Stephen Piscotty representing the tying run with just one out. Piscotty then proceeded to hit a game-tying grand slam on a hanging curveball. Gott got into more trouble, but Tyler Rogers got out of it. The Giants then proceeded to lose by a run in the 10th inning. It was the first time since the 1920s that the Giants blew a five-plus run 9th-inning lead. The next day, the Giants took a 6-3 lead into the 9th and Trevor Gott was summoned once again. Gott allowed a home run to the first batter he faced, but then settled down and recorded the first out. The next batter, Tony Kemp, hit a soft line drive out to right field, and Hunter Pence completely misjudged it. He ran in a couple steps, then veered back and to his right before the ball landed safely over his head. It was a ball that should have been caught. Gott then got the next batter on a line out. Matt Olson then came up representing the tying run. Left-handed pitcher Sam Selman, who has been very good this year, was loose in the 'pen and seemed like a solid option to replace Gott against the lefty Olson. But manager Gabe Kapler elected to leave Gott in the game, and he walked Olson to bring up the go-ahead run in Mark Canha. In a full count, Canha hit a go-ahead three-run homer. The Giants did not score in the bottom of the 9th and lost the game, 7-6. It was the first time in franchise history that the Giants lost back-to-back games in which they had three-plus run 9th-inning leads.Rock AutoAmazing selection. Reliably low prices. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about the San Francisco Giants' 4-3 win over the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday night. Logan Webb started for the Giants, and he pitched beautifully in five-plus innings. The game started off on a bad note, with Donovan Solano making a fielding error that would later come around to score. The Rockies took a 2-0 lead in the third inning, but the Giants answered in a big way in the top of the fourth. Mike Yastrzemski led off with a ground ball to shortstop Trevor Story, and he made an error that would prove to be costly. With Yastrzemski on first and one out, Donovan Solano singled to set it up for Brandon Belt, who launched a three-run home run to right field that would give the Giants a lead they would not relinquish.Apparently there was some controversy about Gabe Kapler taking out Logan Webb when he did. Webb had only thrown 60-something pitches through five-plus, but he allowed a leadoff single to Tony Wolters in the bottom of the 6th, which flipped the lineup over for the third time. There is clear evidence that starting pitchers fare worse against lineups the third time through the order, and Webb had just given up a hit to one of the worst hitters in baseball. What's more, a lefty-heavy part of the Rockies lineup was due up. It was absolutely the right call to remove Webb at that point, considering the ballpark, the hit by Wolters, the fact that it was the third time through, and the fact that it was a lefty-heavy part of the lineup. Lefty Caleb Baragar came in and got the Rockies to go down in order. Another non-controversy is also discussed on the show: Kapler's correct decision to go to Tony Watson in the bottom of the 7th even though righty Nolan Arenado was up first. Overall, the Giants' pitching was great last night and the offense, led by Belt, gave them just enough to win by one. Trevor Gott showed great stuff while shutting down the Rockies in the 9th to notch the save.Rock AutoAmazing selection. Reliably low prices. All the parts your car will ever need. On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about the Giants' unlikely series split against the Dodgers in Los Angeles. After losing the first two games by a combined score of 17-2, the Giants were looking like a team that was already unraveling. But against two lefty starters on Saturday and Sunday, the Giants were able to put out a more competitive lineup that was heavy on right-handed hitters. Despite all the criticism this team has taken from pundits and fans, the righty lineup is competitive, and the Giants' pitching proved to be instrumental in two big wins against the Dodgers. On Saturday, Logan Webb made is season debut and pitched great. He was filling up the strike zone with all of his pitches, and he proved to be tough on Dodgers hitters. The Giants' offense put consistent pressure on lefty Alex Wood, and they were able to jump ahead to a 5-1 lead in the early innings. This got a bit dicey for the Giants in the late innings. Donovan Solano committed a two-out error that directly led to two runs, and Trevor Gott allowed a leadoff home run to Will Smith in the bottom of the 9th, but the Giants held on for a 5-4 victory. It was their first of the year and the first for new manager Gabe Kapler in a Giants uniform. On Sunday, a nationally televised ESPN game, the Giants again put consistent pressure on left-handed starter Julio Urias. They weren't able to put too many runs on the board though, and it was a tight game throughout. Starting pitcher Drew Smyly pitched well through 3.1 innings, mixing in a mid-90s fastball, a big curveball, and a cutter. All three pitches were competitive and kept the Dodgers in check. He got into and out of trouble in a long third inning. Shaun Anderson looked dominant again in relief (as he did on Saturday), and the rest of the Giants' bullpen again held tough against a potent Dodgers lineup. Mauricio Dubón and Donovan Solano delivered clutch two-out hits, which ultimately gave the Giants a 3-1 lead that would be the final score. Trevor Gott earned his second save in as many days, pitching through a leadoff double and a 3-1 count on the next hitter. He retired Mookie Betts on a fly ball and blew a fastball past Max Muncy to finish out the game.Next the Giants come home for a six-game homestand against the Padres and Rangers. All eyes, however, are on the situation with the Miami Marlins, who have had an outbreak of Covid-19 on their team. Fourteen players and coaches have reportedly tested positive in the last two days. Their game against the Orioles and the Yankees-Phillies game (the Marlins were in Philadelphia when the outbreak occurred) have been postponed.cbdMDOur friends at cbdMD have an amazing duo that can help you relax, regroup, and recharge when life gets chaotic. And to make it even easier cbdMD is offering all our listeners 25% OFF your next order when you use the promo code LOCKED ON MLB at checkout.Rock AutoAmazing selection. Giants mailbag: How long before Joey Bart comes up?

On today's Locked On Giants Podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers questions from fans on Twitter. Among the questions answered, Ben talks about when the Giants may (or may not) call up top prospect Joey Bart. The team must wait until July 29 if they want to ensure that Bart won't gain a full year of service time in 2020, which could allow him to reach free agency after the 2025 season as opposed to the 2026 season. However, even if the Giants call up Bart on July 29 or later, if the 2020 season ends up getting cancelled afterwards, it is possible that Bart would be granted a year of service time anyway.Another question asked and answered is about Jeff Samardzija. While his ERA was good in 2019, his peripheral numbers suggest that massive regression could be coming, and this could be an issue as "The Shark" hopes to work as a traditional starter who pitches deep into games. This could cause conflict with new manager Gabe Kapler, who probably won't let a struggling starter eat innings that could be more effectively managed with relief pitcher alternatives. Kapler has expressed a willingness to respect his players' wishes, while balancing an analytical approach. It will be fascinating to watch how it plays out in Samardzija's case.Ben also answers a question about what the Giants are likely to do at this year's trading deadline, which is August 31. Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi was extremely active at last year's deadline, and fans should expect the same in 2020, assuming the season is still being played. The Giants could have desirable trade pieces in Kevin Gausman and Drew Smyly, in addition to under-the-radar, controllable bullpen arms like Trevor Gott and Tyler Rogers. As Ben explains, bullpen pieces on a retooling team are non-essential, and if those players can be flipped for starting caliber position players or starting pitchers, that may benefit the Giants in the long run. In essence, bullpen arms can help contending teams win in the postseason, but they don't necessarily lead teams to the postseason. Also discussed is the bullpen hierarchy. Although many annointed Tony Watson the heir apparent to Will Smith when he departed in free agency, the Giants may have more talented relievers in Trevor Gott and Tyler Rogers. Rogers's 2019 season was spectacular, and he was looking sharp again in spring training and summer camp. He "opened" a game against the Oakland A's on Tuesday, and it's possible he could do the same on occasion during the regular season. The Giants are likely to go with a bullpen by committee approach at least to start the year, as they don't necessarily have a bunch of established guys in the 'pen. However, that doesn't mean they can't match up and make things difficult on their opponents. cbdMDOur friends at cbdMD have an amazing duo that can help you relax, regroup, and recharge when life gets chaotic. And to make it even easier cbdMD is offering all our listeners 25% OFF your next order when you use the promo code LOCKED ON MLB at checkout.Rock AutoAmazing selection. What if Bobby Evans hadn't been fired as the Giants' general manager? Things would look a whole lot different. Obviously, Farhan Zaidi never would have been brought into the organization. It's likely that a lot of supplemental players from the 2018 team would have been brought back, and several key future pieces like Mike Yastrzemski, Alex Dickerson, Mauricio Dubón, Donovan Solano, and Trevor Gott never would have been brought in. It's probably more likely that Madison Bumgarner would still be a Giant, too. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
