We welcome the amazing Nick Tsiotos to the show! Nick Tsiotos is the Sports Editor of Greek Americans in Sports and a Boston Public School teacher with a dedication to excellence in education. Passionate about sports and his Hellenic culture, Nick has also worked as a journalist for The Hellenic Chronicle, as Sports Editor for The Hellenic Voice, and contributed to The AHEPA Magazine. Nick and his colleague former Boston Globe Columnist Andy Dabilis are longtime chroniclers of Boston sports history, co-authoring several books including Harry Agganis, The Golden Greek, An All-American Story; The 1903 World Series: The Boston Americans Red Sox vs. Pittsburg Pirates, the first World Series won by Boston; and Running With Pheidippides, the dramatic post-World War II true story of the 1946 Boston Marathon contest between good friends Johnny Kelly and Stylianos Kyriakides, a race that was considered the first charity run for The Boston Marathon. This book was also translated and published in Greece, Γεννημένος Nικητής, η απίστευτη ιστορία του Στέλιου Κυριακίδη. The book was featured in the Emmy Award Winning 2004 Athens Olympics documentary Journey of A Warrior, introduced by Bob Costas and seen by over 100 million people during the Closing Ceremonies of the Athens Games. Nick has appeared on numerous radio and TV shows talking about topics ranging from The Olympics, Hellenism, sports, Harry Agganis, and The Boston Marathon. A professional entertainer, Nick was voted by New England sports fans as The Boston Herald's “Wrestling Personality of the Year” in 1991 and 1992, and as “Nick the Greek, Master Predictor of Wrestling,” with his magical and mystically powerful Delphi Cane. Nick led a grassroots fundraising effort to erect a statue of Harry Agganis for the Sports Museum of New England in 1995, working closely with current Curator Richard Johnson and world-renowned artist Armand La Montagne. This community effort would resurrect the beloved Agganis legacy and lead to a Boston University street named Harry Agganis Way, the naming of Agganis Arena, and a bronze statue of Agganis at Boston University, donated by BU alumni Mike and Greg Agganis. He has diligently worked and raised funds for a variety of charities, including his tenure as President of The Harry Agganis Team Fund, The Viking Pride Foundation, Boston Children's Hospital Hellenic Cardiac Fund, Hellenic Nursing Home, AHEPA's Cooley's Anemia Project, and AHEPA Olympic 1996 Tribute, ALS, and other causes. Tsiotos graduated from Winthrop High School, where he captained his legendary Hall of Fame Coach Henry McCarthy's basketball team (17-1) to the old Boston Garden State Tech Tournament, and went on to play in two Suffolk University NCAA Basketball Tournaments for New England Hall of Fame Coach Jim Nelson. When you win eleven Gold Gloves in eleven years, you know you're one of the best. Keith Hernandez knew he was one of the best. A contact hitter with a career .296, he won two World Series rings, five All-Star appearances, and picked up the NL batting championship award in 1979. Five years into his career, he cracked the .300 ceiling and never looked back. Yet for this week's game, we will go back to the very first month of his MLB career. It's September 14th, and Hernandez has been in The Show for three weeks. He was brought up from the minors by the St Louis Cardinals for a challenging September as they unsuccessfully chased the Pittsburg Pirates for the NL East top spot. Today, they're on the road to the Philadelphia Phillies, who have fallen out of the pennant race but still want a head-to-head victory over the Cardinals. Hernandez is fifth in the order and looking to make a difference… Your KMOX Cardinals radio team of Jack Buck, Mike Shannon and Bob Starr take you through the game. You can find the boxscore here: https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/PHI/PHI197409140.shtml This game was played on September 14,1974.

Ted Simmons was one of the MLB's greatest catchers. Two games with the St Louis Cardinals in 1968 started his career in the game, but after a year in AAA his natural debut came in 1970. When he retired after 21 years in the majors, he held the catcher records for 2,472 career hits (with 483 doubles), ranked second for RBIs with 1389 runs, and 10th for home runs with 248 out of the park. Throw in seven years batting over .300, and catching two no-hitters with the Cardinals, and you get an idea of how much confidence he gave to his pitchers. We're going to pick up his career in 1971, with Simmons now established as the starting catcher for the Cardinals. On the mound is another legend, pitcher Bob Gibson. What magic can they produce as they visit the Pittsburg Pirates? Jack Buck is behind the KMOX microphone. You can find the boxscore here: https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/PIT/PIT197108140.shtml This game was played on August 14th, 1971. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/classicbaseballradio/message
He was a standout pitcher for the Pittsburg Pirates – one of four Pirates pitchers from the same extended family in northwestern Connecticut in the 1960s. Steve Blass, who had the longest and most successful career of the four graduates of Housatonic Valley Regional High School, played his earliest baseball on the Town of Canaan's Segalla Field – a Field of Dreams style setting. He remains the last National League pitcher to throw a complete 9 innings in the 7th game of a World Series – the 1971 series, in which he pitched two complete games. Only one other human has done that. Hear his incredible story, from Connecticut to Pittsburgh.

He became the first White Sox player to homer in four straight games since Matt Davidson in 2017. Sheets’ three-run shot and Burger’s two-run drive were among six straight hits by the White Sox with two outs in the fifth as Chicago jumped ahead 6-0. Last Night Eastern Conference Finals Miami Heat at Boston Celtics, 8:30 p.m. (Game 1) NBA – The Wembanyama sweepstakes and draft lottery has a winner: It’s the Spurs Victor Wembanyama is now set to begin his NBA career with the San Antonio Spurs, after they won the NBA draft lottery and the No. 1 overall pick on Tuesday night. The Spurs were one of three teams with the best odds — 14% — to land the No. 1 pick, which they’ll almost certainly use on Wembanyama. The 7-foot-3 French 19-year-old is one of the most highly touted prospects in NBA history and will be expected to make an immediate impact on the league. Detroit had the worst record in the NBA and was one of the three teams with the best odds of winning. The Pistons wound up falling all the way to fifth, the worst of their possible outcomes. Indiana has the 7th pick and the Bulls pick at 11 was traded to Orlando in the deal for Nikola Vucevic. WNBA – WNBA suspends Hammon 2 games for player’s allegation she was bullied The WNBA has suspended Las Vegas coach Becky Hammon, one of the league’s marquee figures, for two games after former Aces player Dearica Hamby said she had been bullied and manipulated for being pregnant. Hammon, who in her first season last year led the Aces to the WNBA championship, was suspended without pay Tuesday after a monthslong investigation. The league also rescinded the Aces’ first-round pick in the 2025 draft for a different issue — a violation of league rules regarding impermissible player benefits involving Hamby. Hammon and the Aces have not responded to requests for comment. NHL – Arizona Coyotes’ bid for new arena appears to be rejected by voters The Arizona Coyotes’ bid for a new arena appears to be dead. In the first release of results from Tuesday’s referendum, voters in the Phoenix suburb of Tempe were strongly against three propositions to build a $2.3 billion entertainment district that would include a new arena for the Coyotes. Opposition to the three propositions had a double-digit lead over those in favor, with only ballots dropped off Tuesday left to count. The Coyotes had hoped a new arena in Tempe would finally allow the franchise to settle down after playing in three different venues since moving to Arizona. Now it appears the franchise has to search for a new home again. NFL – ESPN announces ‘Pat McAfee Show’ will join afternoon lineup Pat McAfee’s show is moving to ESPN as part of a new multiyear deal. McAfee first joined ESPN as a college football analyst for its Thursday night games in 2019. He returned to the network last year and became part of the “College GameDay” crew as well as hosting some alternate presentations of ESPN games, including the CFP National Championship. That will continue, but it is McAfee’s show that has created the most buzz. ESPN also announced a documentary series on Serena Williams and four major matchups for the upcoming college football season. NFL – Peacock will exclusively carry NFL playoff game in a first for streaming service The NFL is taking another big step into streaming by putting one of its playoff games exclusively on a digital platform for the first time. The league and NBCUniversal announced that the Saturday night game on Wild Card weekend will be on Peacock. It will be preceded by a late afternoon playoff game on NBC and Peacock that will kick off at 4:30 p.m. EST. The Peacock game will also be broadcast on NBC stations in the markets of the two teams. Subscription rates for Peacock start at $4.99 per month. Soccer – CTE cases in soccer players raise fresh questions about safety of heading the ball Four more former professional soccer players have been diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy. The Concussion Legacy Foundation says the North American Soccer League veterans were found to have the degenerative brain disease that has been linked to concussions in athletes, combat veterans and others who have sustained repeated head trauma. English star Jimmy Fryatt was one of them. He was considered one of the best at heading the ball. Researchers say the practice is dangerous and should be phased out, especially for children. The new diagnoses come as soccer officials gather in Chicago for a Head Injury Summit. Some of the ex-players’ families say hearing from those who suffered from the disease is a key to preventing and treating it. High school basketball teams now will shoot two free throws for common fouls when in the “bonus” instead of having to make the first free throw to get a second after seven fouls. Rules changes for next school year were approved by the National Federation of State High School Associations’ basketball rules committee, then by its board of directors. In addition to awarding two foul shots for all common fouls, teams will reach the bonus when their opponent commits five fouls in each quarter and team fouls will reset at the end of each quarter. Anthony Davis scored 40 points for the Lakers and LeBron James came up one assist shy of a triple double to go with his 26 points and 12 rebounds. In addition to awarding two foul shots for all common fouls, teams will reach the bonus when their opponent commits five fouls in each quarter and team fouls will reset at the end of each quarter. Lorenzen (2-2) gave up five hits and two walks and has allowed just two runs in his last three starts. Will Vest worked two scoreless innings, with three strikeouts, and Jose Cisnero pitched the ninth. Torkelson scored and knocked in another run. Riley Greene had three hits. Lance Lynn allowed three runs — one earned — on seven hits in seven innings. Robert’s solo shot to deep left in the eighth was his AL-leading 12th homer of the season. He became the first White Sox player to homer in four straight games since Matt Davidson in 2017. Sheets’ three-run shot and Burger’s two-run drive were among six straight hits by the White Sox with two outs in the fifth as Chicago jumped ahead 6-0. Astros 7, Cubs 3 – Alvarez, McCormick each have 2 hits, Astros beat Cubs 7-3 Yordan Alvarez had two hits and drove in two runs and Chas McCormick added two hits and made a nifty grab in the Houston Astros’ 7-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night. The Nuggets led by as many as 21 points before the Lakers made a late push before falling short of winning an opener on the road for the third time in these playoffs. Anthony Davis scored 40 points for the Lakers and LeBron James came up one assist shy of a triple double to go with his 26 points and 12 rebounds. Matt Frazier is an exciting young prospect for the Pittsburg Pirates—the left-handed hitting OF burst on the scene with a breakout season two years ago. He is now the starting centerfielder for the Altoona Curve. Cheats (BBM) sat down with Matt this week in Richmond to introduce him to the BBM community. Matt talked about playing baseball from a very young age (3), having a father who played pro ball as his mentor, and his passion for fashion. Paddy open's today's show by covering the Cincinnati Reds, and many may wonder why. Well, the Reds played the Pittsburg Pirates on Sunday (5/15) and Hunter Greene threw 7 1/3 innings of no-hit baseball. Unfortunately for the 22-year-old phenom, the Reds would go on to lose this game even without giving up any hits. Paddy breaks down how this happens and then talks about some of the issues going on with umpires. To be more specific the "ump show" that people have become accustomed to seeing because a few umpires do like to make some moments bigger. One of the biggest issues with umpires is the fact that they're human and humans make mistakes. Paddy takes a look at how umpiring has changed since 2008. After that Paddy goes through every team's best player under 25 that could be a superstar for years to come. To end today's show Paddy covers injuries and stat updates. We go stateside this week and talk to Erwin Benedict Valencia or simply ‘E’. I have know Erwin since 2016 when we met in New York City in his role working in Basketball and we’ve been good friends ever since. I would regard him as a polymath, hugely competent in many different and diverse domains. At the last count he had over 30 letters after his name but that really is just a by product of who he is. He grew up in the Philippines but moved around a fair bit as a kid before getting his first break working in professional sport with the Pittsburg Pirates in Major League Baseball. From there he went into professional basketball where he remains today. He's widely sought for his views and skills and the athletes he works with benefit hugely from his continuous learning, his curiosity and his positivity. During this chat, we touch on resilience, recovery, over-training, mindfulness, meditation, breathing, manifestation and positive psychology. Do you coach people? This could be in business, life, sports. But as a coach, do you find yourself telling people what to do or giving them choice in exercises or do you delegate the responsibility to others while taking on an advisory role. This is easier said than done, but join in on the conversation as Andy Bass, mental skills coach for the Pittsburg Pirates talks about why he is not sorry for being an advocate for player choice especially in the learning process.
On today’s show we’re talking about the notion of valuation or what is sometimes called price discovery. I was 13 years old when I got my first taste of price discovery. In Istanbul Turkey there is the largest covered bazaar that comprises over 61 streets and over 4,000 vendors. The vendor was trying to sell me a metal sword and a negotiation ensued. I was a rookie at this, but my father knew the game and by the end of a 5 minute negotiation we settled on a price that was about 1/3 of the original asking price. The seller was grumbling the whole time as he wrapped up my purchase. I left his shop confident that I had just got a great deal. As I reflect back on it now, how much was that souvenir really worth? It’s worth what I paid for it. Did I pay too much? Did I get a great deal? I have truly no idea. There is the story of Honus Wagner played in major league baseball for 21 seasons, most of that for the Pittsburg Pirates. He was one the first five players to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936. On October 31 of last year, one of 50 Wagner baseball cards sold for $1.4M dollars. It’s not the most expensive version of that card to ever sell. The most expensive one sold for $3.25M. The scarcity is part of what drives the notion of value. If there were 1,000 of these cards, they would be worth much less. It’s because there are only 50 remaining in existence that drives the notion of value. Maybe the baseball card worth 2.5 cents, the cost of the paper and ink to print it? When you buy shares in a public company, you’re buying a fraction of a company, that presumably has the ability through its active ongoing business to generate a profit for its owners. As a shareholder, you’re an owner. You would think that the value of a business is somehow tied to its ability to generate a profit. A business that generates a lot of profit should be worth more than a business that generates very little profit. Tesla Stock is currently trading at 1,667 times earnings. That means that if Tesla remained at the same level of profitability, it would take 1,667 years to earn your initial investment back, and that’s assuming of course that the company paid out 100% of its earnings in dividends to investors. At that point, I’m starting to wonder which is a better deal, Tesla stock or the baseball card? The notion of value has become distorted. A single family home in an expensive neighborhood is worth $1M because we all agree that it’s worth that much. This is what is called price discovery. If a house on the street sells for $100,000 more, now all of a sudden everyone on the street thinks their house is worth $100,000 more. But the world of real estate investing is different than the world of residential home ownership. It might seem to the uninitiated that they’re similar. But they’re quite different. You see if an apartment rents for $1,500 a month, that rent check clears every month. If you have a 100 unit building, then you have 1,200 transactions that closed over the past 12 months. There is no speculation about what the apartments will rent for. There is hard data. So when it comes to valuation, if rental properties are valuing at a 6% cap rate, then you can easily determine what a property is worth. You have lots of data from hundreds and hundreds actual transactions that settled each and every month. So what is a piece of real estate worth? Is it merely the result of negotiation, or perhaps the real estate business that is wrapped around the property is worth a multiple of its net income, its ability to generate a profit.

My guest on this episode is a former professional baseball player, Tim Pahuta. Tim was originally drafted in the 21st round (624th overall) in 2001 by the Pittsburg Pirates but opted to attend Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey. In 2005, Tim was drafted again, this time by the Washington Nationals ion the 18th round (534th overall) where he signed and played professionally in the minor league system from 2005 to 2013. Tim has traveled the nation for the past 15 years, rarely spending more than 6 months in a single location. Today he is the first Life Mapping Coach in the U.S. Life Maps are a brand new tool for understanding and enhancing your life story. In this episode, you'll hear from Tim about his life growing up learning about baseball at a young age to his life on the road as a professional baseball. You'll also hear how Tim became a Life Mapping Coach and how this tool could benefit you. I love hearing stories about baseball -- as you know, baseball is my favorite sport and because of my own personal ties with baseball as a once baseball Mom to a traveling baseball player turned professional baseball player. So this subject is always near and dear to my heart. I really enjoyed learning about Tim's transition from playing professional baseball to becoming the first Life Mapping Coach in the U.S. If you are interested in learning more about becoming a Life Mapping Coach or want more information about Life Mapping as a personal development tool, please visit LIFEMAPPING DOT ME. Dr. Art De Vany is an American economist known for his work on the Hollywood film industry. He is perhaps best known, however, as the grandfather of the paleo diet, a high-protein, high-fiber way of eating similar to the way our hunter-gather ancestors ate during the Stone Age. Born in 1937, he has had a varied career that began right out of high school when he signed a baseball contract with the Hollywood Stars, a minor-league affiliate of the Pittsburg Pirates. Even though he could “run like a deer” and “hit the ball out of sight,” his poor eyesight ended his baseball career and led him the UCLA where earned a doctorate in economics. He spent most of his academic career studying Hollywood and the film industry. His research has ranged from “Hollywood Economics: How Extreme Uncertainty Shapes the Film Industry” to “Quality Revaluations and the Breakdown of Statistical Herding in the Dynamics of Box Office Revenues.” De Vany turns 80 in August and has spent the past 40 years living the paleo way. He outlined his diet and fitness philosophy in “The New Evolution Diet: What Our Paleolithic Ancestors Can Teach Us About Weight Loss, Fitness and Aging.” https://www.amazon.com/New-Evolution-Diet-Paleolithic-Ancestors-ebook/dp/B004EBT6SS/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1487717091&sr=1-1&keywords=New+evolution He is working on a new book that’s tentatively titled “Renewing Cycles: Healing the Wounds of Aging Through Improved Cellular Defense and Systemic Signaling.” De Vany gave a lecture at IHMC in Pensacola last December where he talked about the New Evolution Diet” as well as his upcoming book on aging. In Episode 30 of STEM-Talk, host Dawn Kernagis and IHMC Founder Ken Ford have a wide-ranging conversation with De Vany that covers his statistical study of home-run hitting to the dynamics of box-office revenues to the role that exercise and diet play in aging. 0:15: Dawn welcomes Ken, who talks briefly about Art’s background. 1:32: Dawn announces the winning iTunes review. 2:05: Dawn and Ken give an overview of Art’s career and research. 3:12: – Dawn welcomes Art to the show. 3:50: Art talks about his youth and how he started weightlifting as a teen-ager. 5:23: He signs with the Pittsburg Pirates and talks about playing in segregated baseball parks in the South, which was something he had never experienced before. 7:40: Ken and Art compare the lean physiques of great sluggers active in the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s such as Ted Williams, Hank Aaron and Carl Yastrzemski with today’s much larger home run hitters. 10:37: Art recalls how debates with one of his professors at UCLA about central planning versus decentralized control systems led him into economics. 13:10: Dawn asks Art to talk about his research into the economics of Hollywood. 16:17: Art explains the impact of movies like “The Titanic,” which can generate 10 percent of all the box-office revenues during a year that will see 600 to 700 movies that are released. 17:06: Dawn asks Art to share his fondest scientific and professional memories. 18:11: In 1979, Art’s newborn son is diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and leads to Art’s interest and research into metabolism. 20:20: Dawn asks Art to describe the most profound power laws he has discovered in his pursuit to counter the aging process. 22:26: Ken shares his thoughts about “The New Evolution Diet,” which he describes as beautifully built on Art’s personal interest in evolution and his professional interest in complex stochastic systems. 25:26: Art explains how the book grew out of his realization that insulin controls the pathways that drive growth and obesity as well as shutting down the protective pathways. 26:45: Art describes genes as Bayesian forecasters arising from non-genetic influences on genetic expression. 28:17: Ken inquires about Art’s time at the Institute for Mathematical Behavioral Sciences, which Art describes as a dream place for him.
Chaz Lytle, former MLB pro with the Pittsburg Pirates, and owner of Chaz Lytle Baseball in Orlando, FL, is living his passion teaching all ages how to make it in the ‘big leagues’. Chaz talks honestly and from the heart with Luc today about the years after retiring from MLB, overcoming depression, and helping youth increase their success and enjoyment of the game. Chaz’s Journey Chaz started his professional baseball career at the University of Georgia and went through the semi-pro leagues before signing with the Pirates. In fact, he never had any plans for after his pro career. Baseball was always his focus. But, in 2004, Rick Eckstein (hitting coach for the Univ. of Kentucky Wildcats), asked Chaz to help him with an off-season clinic. Something just ‘clicked’ for him at that moment, and he even turned down an opportunity to become a scout to continue working with youth. He started his own training camp, Chaz Lytle Baseball, and his first student is now on the way to playing pro with the Cleveland Indians. ‘Put Barrel on Ball’ This is Chaz’s mantra with his students. Nothing else matters. As long as you can hit that ball, you can succeed. Instead of trying to do too much, you’re just squaring up. You can’t steer the ball. And, it doesn’t matter how big you are or where you came from. This mantra translates to life as well. You can’t control life. All you can do is prepare to be in the best place possible for opportunity to happen. You have to put in the work and ‘just go do it. No matter your circumstances. Battling Depression At first, retiring from MLB was the toughest time in his life. He went through a deep depression. He didn’t overcome it until he asked himself how he had gotten there and then realized he just no longer wanted to be that person. It was a bad place to be but, having overcame it, it helps him relate much better to his students. He can see trouble ahead for some and he can talk seriously with the kids about where certain things are and are not going to get them in their lives and careers. Developing Mindset In life, we are going to have setbacks. It is inevitable. It’s how you come back from those setbacks that matter. That mindset is so important to him that he wants his son, Duke, to learn from someone who has experienced the ups and downs of life. Don’t beat yourself up before you even get in the game. You have to understand that we can only do so much and the rest is trust. In sports, you are programmed and led to every major practice, game, etc. In life, you have to do that for yourself. Chaz undertook a lot of classes and a lot of personal development work to re-program his life. He understands now what he can and can’t control in life and you just can’t worry about tomorrow. Live today. So many of his students have developed a fear of talking openly because it feels like a sign of weakness. He tells his kids that it’s good to have conversations about where you are emotionally. Mental Toughness in Business In sports, you’re going to fail. You can’t win every game. The same goes for business. It’s not about how many times you’ve gotten knocked down-it’s how many times you got back up. You have to pay your dues. If you don’t know where you came from, you’re never getting to where you want to go. Never ever give up. Even the best players can have a bad season. When times are great, everyone loves you. But, you really find out who cares about you when times are tough. 3 Steps to Greatness Perseverance, Adversity, and Hard Work. If you can persevere, battle adversity, and do the hard work, that gets you through it. The world of data analytics is meeting the revenue demands of every franchise, but one of the best steps the Pittsburg Pirates made was installing Jim Alexander from as the team’s Director of Tickets into the analytics role. It is important to showcase that those who know how to generate revenue are also those determining what figures matter and what ancillaries measurements do not. Alexander discusses the various ways in which his role has changed over the years, especially transitioning from Three Rivers Stadium to PNC Park. Alexander covers the topic of fan experience, relating it to customer service, and how, when new PNC Park opened, seats weren’t automatically sold without the customer service aspect being implemented by the team.
A Ghost In Time by B.T. Joy He closes his eyes. The light flashes. Somewhere west. Wyoming. Montana. Little Hallmark across the street. Hanging lilacs. Next door along. A picture house showing the matinees. His eyes, getting old, can’t see the listings. May as well cross. Look what’s on. Halfway over. An Asian guy in an immaculate suit passes. He feels the familiar repulsive burn of electric between them. The Asian guy thinks they’ve brushed bodies and makes something of it. “Hey fella! Watch where you’re going, huh!?” He doesn’t respond. You’re wondering how he can be so calm? It wasn’t always that way. Not always that way at all. His shuddering feet reach the other curb like tiny boats coming into shore and he shuffles to the doors of the picture house. He doesn’t have time to watch the movies. He’ll never have time to watch a full movie again. But sometimes he likes to read the advertisements. Schindler’s List. Jurassic Park. Sleepless in Seattle. Must be the early 90s now. Christ the world was getting old. He closes his eyes. The light flashes. Sidewalk bench. Sitting. Early morning and no folk around. The Deep South by the look of the trees all shining in the muggy wind and the French Colonial facades, blue and peach, that line the good-sides of the streets like Hollywood sets of pinewood and plaster. 1970, by the cars. But what were you asking? Oh, yes, so calm. He wasn’t always so calm. It wasn’t always that way. For the first ten years he’d run around from place to place- from time to time- like a devil on speed. Trying to grab at people. Shouting. Screaming his name. Saying he was lost and he wanted to go home now. Nothing ever changed. He couldn’t make anything change at any rate. Nothing ever stayed the same long enough for anyone to understand. He looks down at his hands. Resting on his legs that rest on that little sky-blue bench in Louisiana or Mississippi; or wherever the fuck he is. Old hands. With delves deep as canyons and the little lilac rivers of veins rushing everywhere; eroding the skin. So old. Getting so... so... old. He closes his eyes. The light flashes. Chase Field. On the grass. Fuck. Chase Field again. On the grass. Strewn with shirtless bodies, old and young. Brown porpoises lolling in the Phoenix summer. Pittsburg Pirates win. Arizona Diamondbacks lose. Ten runs to three. He sits on the wall. The lawn is emptying. Gingham. Striped. Checker. Tartan. Calico. White. The blankets are being skinned from the lawn. Folded between semi-naked bodies glossed with sweat. The grass is littered with cartons and discarded chili-dogs. The march is being played. Not again. Not again with the fucking march. Must times be recycled. Isn’t it bad enough. Isn’t it torture enough. Isn’t it hell enough. The march. The march. The triumphant peppy march. Pittsburg Pirates win. Arizona Diamondbacks lose. Ten runs to three. The people are swarming like a chain of coffee-coloured ants. They bear insufferably close. The repulsive electric stabs at him. A thousand stinging tentacles. He falls off the wall and wails when he hits the earth. Mothers pull their children into shawls of towels and blankets. “Just a drunk.” They whisper to each other. From the flat of his back he stares up at the painful Arizona sun. He closes his eyes. The light flashes. Dark place. Perhaps by the sea. Because he can hear it lolling on the shore. Cooler night. Still on his back. Faint wisps of air up there. In all that blackness. Faint green. Radiation green. Perhaps it’s thicker than it looks because there are no stars. But the sea. The sea out there. In the dark. Still lolling on the shore. What were you asking? Calm? Yes. Calm now. Calm now. Like the sea. Like the sea. Out there. In the dark. Still lolling on the shore. Not always like this. Not at all always like this. Ran frantic once. Devil on speed. Grab people. Shout. Scream name. Lost. Lost. Lost. Want to go home! Want to go home! Sea now. Dark. Lolling on shore. What were you asking? What? Does he remember? Of course he remembers. Who could forget? Done with her. Blood on privates. Hers. His. Jimmy’s. Jimmy’s knife. Pulled it out. No. Put it back. Pulled it out. More blood. Throat this time. Not from below. Not from where they’d forced themselves inside. Throat this time. Welling up. Red. Like the sea. In the dark. Lolling on the shore. Tongue lolling. On the grass. Sea on the shore. Tongue on the grass. Lolling. Lolling. He closes his eyes. The light flashes. Chase Field. On the grass. Fuck. Chase Field again. On the grass. Old and young. Brown porpoises. Lolling. Lolling. Lolling. Pittsburg Pirates win. Arizona Diamondbacks lose. Ten runs to three. He sits on the wall. Gingham. Striped. Checker. Tartan. Calico. White. Red. Like the sea. Welling up. Lolling. Lolling. Blankets. Skinned from the lawn. Not again. Not again. Fucking march. Recycled. Bad enough. Torture enough. Hell enough. The march. The march. Pittsburg Pirates. Arizona Diamondbacks. Ten runs to three. Swarming ants. Insufferably close. The repulsive electric. He falls. Mothers pull children. “Just a drunk.” “Just a drunk.” Painful Arizona sun. He closes his eyes. The light flashes. No. No. Interstate 44. Lebanon. Missouri. June 14th. Cover of cypress trees. Old Harley store closed for business. Almost transparent moon. Dark clouds and gold-dust of dawn. No. No. No. He looks to the trees. To the murmuring sounds not leaves but men are making under the anonymity of shade. No. Old now. Weak now. No. In the dark a hand. His hand. Her mouth. His jeans. Her blood. Jimmy puts back his cock. Pulls out his knife. She dies. And here, they didn’t know, they knew too well, folk are placed in pods of iron; and fed to eternity. He closes is eyes. The light flashes.
