Tropical Storm Erin Is Coming: Here's How to Prepare Your Home

The Common Sense Practical Prepper

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 12, 2025 7:00 Transcription Available

Send us a textWhen disaster strikes, the difference between comfort and crisis often comes down to preparation. Tropical Storm Erin is brewing with 45 mph sustained winds and forecasters predict it will strengthen into a Category 3 hurricane within days. Though it's likely to veer away from the East Coast before landfall, this serves as the perfect opportunity to evaluate your emergency readiness.A proper hurricane kit doesn't require a massive budget or specialized knowledge. Start with water - the foundation of survival. While guidelines suggest one gallon per person daily, I recommend doubling that to two gallons for cooking, drinking, and sanitation. For food, focus on easy-to-prepare options that don't require refrigeration: canned goods, protein bars, peanut butter, and dried fruits. Commercial emergency food buckets from companies like Augason Farms or ReadyWise offer convenient alternatives with impressive shelf-life.Beyond sustenance, your kit should include a basic first aid kit, prescription medications, emergency lighting (flashlights with extra batteries), and potentially a small solar generator for power. Don't overlook the importance of communication tools - a battery-operated or hand-cranked NOAA weather radio keeps you informed when cellular networks fail. Store everything in waterproof containers alongside copies of essential documents like ID, insurance policies, and medical information. The beauty of emergency preparedness is that it doesn't have to happen all at once. As my son would say, "don't go ham" on spending. Add components gradually, focusing first on absolute essentials. Whether you call it a hurricane kit, severe storm kit, or typhoon kit depending on your location, the principles remain the same: practical preparation creates peace of mind. Take this opportunity to start or supplement your emergency supplies - because when minutes matter, prior planning makes all the difference.Augason FarmsSupport the podcast. In this episode, I'm continuing my mini-series Don't Hang Up, where I pick up the phone and call people in my real life (begging them not to hang up!) while I ask them deeply personal questions. This time, I called my friend (completely unannounced - sorry, Monique!!) to talk about what went down at her recent destination wedding in Cabo. Monique is one of my best friends from college, and after years of planning, her dream beach wedding was hit by a literal tropical cyclone. Not just rain…it was a sideways, slamming, ceremony-soaking cyclone kind of weather event. We talked about what it felt like to watch her wedding day unravel in real time, the emotions she went through that morning, how her support system showed up for her, and how she ultimately found the beauty in all the chaos. It's a story about resilience, friendship, soggy dance floors, and what really matters when things don't go according to plan.Whether you're a bride-to-be, a wedding guest, or just love a good real-life plot twist—this one's for you!Watch this episode in video form on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLjmevEcbh5h5FEX0pazPEtN86t7eb2OgX To apply to be a guest on the show, visit luciefink.com/apply and send us your story. TRUMP STATES NO DEPORTATION AMNESTY FOR ILLEGALS, EXCEPT AGRICULTURAL WORKERS WHO CAN STAY UNDER NEW WORK PROGRAM.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------HomeFront-Texas: Disaster recovery continues following the recent floods that have struck the state. Over 109x fatalities have been reported in conjunction with the flooding in Kerr County and the Guadalupe River basin. Local officials are starting to shift rescue operations into recovery, as the last live victim was recovered on Friday. Nevertheless, the search for the missing continues.North Carolina: Following the landfall of a tropical depression over the weekend, severe flooding struck the Capitol region. Dozens of water rescues were conducted over the past two days in Chapel Hill and Durham, and 4x fatalities have been reported so far as a result of the floods.Washington D.C. - Political activities continue as various press statements and news conferences over the past few days have resulted in a shifting of priorities for the White House. Most notably, the White House has changed perspective on the Epstein case. After months of hype surrounding the potential for arrests, the White House and DoJ have stated that no arrests of Epstein's clients will occur nor will any further documents be released regarding this case. President Trump also verbally berated the journalist inquiring about this change of stance, calling the question a "waste of time".Concerning immigration, President Trump also stated that illegal immigrants will not be granted amnesty, however agricultural and service workers will be granted reprieve from deportation under a work program (the details of which have yet to be released).President Trump has also expressed interest in re-arming Ukraine, following last week's slowdown of supplying Ukraine with missiles for their Patriot batteries. Yesterday afternoon the Pentagon confirmed that they will resume weapon shipments to Ukraine.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Regarding the flooding in Texas, as unfortunate and inflammatory as it is, the potential for malign action must be considered. Concerns are already growing regarding the operations of the Rainmaker Technology Corporation and their weather modification programs that have taken place throughout Texas. Augustus Doricko, the CEO of Rainmaker admitted to their company conducting operations in south-central Texas on July 2nd...two days before the severe flooding occurred. Additionally, many are wondering why cloud seeding operations were conducted if the remnants of a Tropical Storm were expected throughout the area, and no drought was declared.Of course, it will take many years of investigation to determine the links between all of this, but since time is of the essence and Hurricane Season is well underway, it would be wise to re-examine risk assessments to factor in current events. From a risk management perspective, if hazardous weather is forecasted, it would be wise to plan for that weather system to produce more severe weather than originally forecasted, just out of an abundance of caution. Especially if located in areas where weather modification efforts are being undertaken with zero oversight whatsoever. However, at the end of the day, if you are chest-deep in water trying to save your family, it won't matter if this is the work of a company to manipulate atmospheric conditions, or if it was a freak weather system. At that point, you're in the mud having to make tough decisions. Assess the risk, start taking weather systems more seriously, and have a plan for what to do if the forecast underestimates a situation when it occurs.Analyst: S2A1Research: https://publish.obsidian.md/s2underground//END REPORT//

It is hard not to have noticed the intensity of storms around the world this year, not least the Atlantic storms that battered the eastern US. A new study, using a new technique, confirms their attribution to climate change, and goes further, finding that many of them were actually raised in intensity category compared to how strong they might have been in a world without anthropogenic climate change. The costs are already extraordinary, according to Daniel Gilford of Climate Central in Princeton. When it comes to wildlife conservation, one of the underestimated parameters is the “old and wise” individuals in a population. According to a review paper in the journal Science, not only are earth's old animals in decline, in many species they are vital to recovery and resilience when outside factors endanger numbers. As co-author Lauren Brent of Exeter University points out, these sorts of nuance are not always looked out for in conservation estimates.Chimps have culture, but is their culture cumulative and transmissible or innate and intuitive? Comparing a large database of observed chimpanzee behaviours, together with genetic lineages, Cassandra Gunasekaram and Andrea Migliano, of the University of Zurich, found that types of more complex tool usage can be correlated with reproductive overlaps between different chimp communities. The wandering females maybe carry tech knowledge with them when they travel to find new mates. Is this something both chimps and humans inherited from a common ancestor? And finally, as the harvesting of deep ocean polymetallic nodules gets nearer to commercial reality, the French research ship L'Atalante sets sail this week to study the animals that live on and around these strange chemical balls scattered across the abyssal plains of the mid pacific ocean. As lead scientist aboard, Pierre-Antoine Dessandier tells us, it is essential to understand how these animals live in the dark, 5km down, before the habitats are disturbed. //The Wire//2300Z November 4, 2024////ROUTINE////BLUF: FBI ARRESTS POTENTIAL TERRORIST PLOTTING ATTACK ON POWER GRID. MEDIA SPECULATES IRANIAN COUNTERATTACK TO BEGIN TONIGHT. ELECTION FORTIFICATIONS CONTINUE IN USA.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Switzerland – Over the weekend additional details have come to light pertaining to the September arrests of the inventor of the Sarco death pods serviced by the assisted-death group Last Resort. The inventor and several others were arrested in September following a malfunction during the first operational use of their death pod. New details indicate that foul play is assessed to be a factor at this time, as a forensic medical examiner noted strangulation marks on the victim's neck. AC: As this exceptionally morbid and dystopian topic has received much attention over the past few years, the situation has not been made much better following the first victim of one of the death pods being found strangled to death. Initial information is sketchy at best, but most theories pertain to the idea that the death pod probably didn't actually kill the person inside it, and the developers probably had to murder their first customer instead.Middle East: Many mainstream media sources throughout the region are theorizing that an Iranian counterattack on Israel may take place tonight or tomorrow, so as to take advantage of the timing of the American Presidential election. AC: As always, nothing is confirmable via open sources. However, even though all mainstream media sources are largely propaganda outlets, it's possible that mainstream media groups run/influenced by intelligence agencies could indeed have inside information pertaining to Iranian attack plans.-HomeFront-United States: Election day fortifications and anti-personnel obstacles continue to be emplaced throughout most major US cities by government agencies and private businesses alike. Plywood barricades have been emplaced by most businesses and storefronts around the National Mall as has become standard during times of heightened potential for civil unrest.Tennessee: This afternoon a man was arrested for allegedly planning to conduct an attack on a power station near Nashville. The FBI identified the assailant as Skyler Philippi, who was arrested after attempting to use an explosive-laden drone to attack a power station.Gulf Coast: Tropical Depression 18L continues to develop strength, as most forecast models predict the storm strengthening into a Tropical Storm this evening. Initial forecast modeling indicates a general track toward Louisiana.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Not much is known regarding the incident in Nashville, however a cursory search of the alleged assailant's name returns substantial open-source investigation reports conducted by far-left groups hunting down alleged White Supremacist groups and/or people. This individual left a paper trail so far and wide as to be exceptionally suspicious, and probably attracted the attention of every federal agency that exists by his rather active online presence. In a continuation of previous DoJ takedowns of potential terrorists, the details surrounding this case raise questions as to how long the FBI was going to wait before stopping this assailant. Per the FBI's own press release, the individual had confessed to planning a mass shooting at a YMCA facility in June of this year. He had also scouted out the electrical facility multiple times, and openly conveyed all of his attack plans to undercover FBI agents in excruciating detail. Additionally, the assailant purchased C4 plastic explosives from an undercover agent, and later purchased black power to be used in the manufacture of IEDs as well. As if this was not enough to arrest the individual, he was able to assemble the explosive devices, attach at least one to a drone, travel to the facility, arm the explosives a

//The Wire//1630Z October 1, 2024////PRIORITY////BLUF: ISRAEL BEGINS GROUND INVASION OF LEBANON. RECOVERY EFFORTS CONTINUE IN AMERICAN SOUTHEAST. ILA LABOR STRIKE BEGINS.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Middle East: Overnight Israeli forces began their ground invasion of Lebanon. So far, it is unclear as to if this is a limited border incursion or the prelude to a much larger invasion. AC: Sources on either side have not entirely been reliable, and due to the remote terrain in southern Lebanon, it may be some time before an accurate picture of the advance is obtained. Western media sources have claimed that an Iranian ballistic missile strike is imminent, however it's not clear as to how any media source could possibly know this information with any certainty. Similar rumors persist regarding the potential for Iran to send troops to Lebanon to assist in their defense against the Israeli invasion.-HomeFront-USA: The Longshoremen labor strike officially began at midnight, with roughly 45,000 dockworkers and other personnel shutting down logistics operations along the Eastern seaboard and Gulf Coast. As of right now, the following port facilities are most affected by the labor strike: Boston, Delaware River, New York, Baltimore, Hampton Roads, Wilmington, Charleston, Savannah, Jacksonville, Miami, Port Everglades, Tampa, Mobile, New Orleans, and Houston.Southeast: Logistical networks have begun to organize more deliberately and aid is beginning to flow into the region as best it can. Roads being impacted or simply no longer existing presents the biggest challenges for rescue and recovery. Price gouging has been reported in many sectors, from fuel to food. Though unconfirmed at this time, truckers are reporting acts of sabotage to their vehicles while parked at truck stops throughout the region. This has allegedly taken the form of slashed tires and tampering with fuel tanks, however it's not clear as to if these incidents are more representative of routine crime or more deliberate targeting of aid shipments.Atlantic Ocean: Tropical Depression Kirk increased to a Tropical Storm overnight, and is expected to become a major hurricane over the next few days. AC: It's too soon to tell if this system is intended for the east coast, however if so this could be a potentially serious complication for the already compromised region.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Though substantial aid shipments and infrastructure are allegedly on the way, most locals still have not seen many aid efforts from higher than the local level. There are also mounting allegations that higher-level government aid agencies are discouraging the work of Good Samaritans. On the ground, feelings are mixed; higher level aid is desperately called for, but most people know that federal assets will probably just mess up what's already being worked at lower levels. As such, there's a delicate balance at hand which is resulting in conflict: Local volunteers have stepped up where the government has not. However, much more substantial efforts are needed than can be provided by single privately owned helicopters or random citizens carrying one truckload of supplies. However, when state/federal agencies takeover operations and shut out volunteers, they often prove that they can't do much better of a job than the volunteers paying out of pocket for recovery efforts. In short, if formal agencies could take over rescue/recovery efforts and do the job effectively, most volunteers would probably be happy to hand the reigns over to more qualified professionals. However, in most cases the professionals are either not capable of the magnitude of support needed, or are bound up in red tape that is costing lives every single day, thus the emerging conflict. This is resulting in a unique parallel society whereby locals are working independently of formal aid agencies to
