In my very special Halloween episode, I explore true crime, sex work, and media of the 1980s through the lens of this summer's horror hit MaXXXine. It is the third film in Ty West's trilogy. Maxine isn't worried about crime, Aids, or drug addiction. She is concerned with fame, or as she says, “I will not accept a life I do not deserve.” The adage is a gift from her father, a preacher turned serial killer who represents the patriarchy in its purest form. The buxom bootstrap babe makes her way through Hollywood in a twisty and turny homage of a film that climaxes on the Hollywood Sign in a standoff with a shotgun to her daddy's face. My sources for this film include Michael Connely's podcast turned mini-series The Wonderland Massacre & the Secret History of Hollywood and the Netflix docuseries Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer.

Ty West hit it out of the park with X, and surprised us all with the near-immediate release of it's prequel Pearl. Set in 1918, Pearl follows the younger self of our former protagonist as she lives on a farm and dreams of a life bigger than what she has. However, nothing wants to go the way she wants it to. Her husband immediately left her to go fight in the war, her mother hates everything she does, and her father (and only friend) is in no condition to comfort her. But, everything changes when her sister-in-law visits with the news of a huge opportunity at stardom. Now, Pearl will stop at nothing to get what she wants. The movie brings back Mia Goth in the title role and features a brand new cast of characters to get axed off one by one. Alright Dr. Movies pronounces Ti West's name wrong the whole time but if he had wanted us to get it right he should have gone by "Ty" West in the DGA or whatever also Rachel doesn't feel he deserves a correction but I think that's a bit harsh cuz I like his movies generally as you will shortly hear. Enjoy!
Dragon on the Couch: The Dragon ventured to the theatre and saw Tar (Theatres), a movie seemingly for pretentious rich people that she also enjoyed. Staying on the Kubrick train, she also watched Spartacus (Rent), a classic swords and sandals movie she liked well enough and is glad she watched. Lastly, the Dragon watched Hocus Pocus 2 (Disney+), the sequel to the 90s movie that she thought was good for what it was - a children's movie. Berto on the Bed: Berto watched the new German film All Quiet On The Western Front (Netflix), a dad movie about WWI that he enjoyed. In bad horror Prime corner, he saw Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever (Prime), which he liked and was surprised that it was directed by Ty West, and Fear Pharm (Prime), a slasher that he had some fun with. In Joe Bob corner, Berto watched Def by Temptation (Shudder), a movie with a lot of cool scenes that had nothing to do with each other, and The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane (Shudder), Jodi Foster's film debut that he really enjoyed, even though he had no idea why the movie was made. Finally, Berto watched Designed To Kill (Tubi), a bad, fun horror movie he had a good time with. Dragon at the Movies: This week's deep dive is the 1962 Kubrick classic Lolita, currently streaming on HBO.
