Baljit Sangra's new documentary issues its central question in its title: Have You Heard Judi Singh? If you have to think about it, the answer is no, because once you've heard Judi Singh sing, you'll remember it – her clarity, her lyricism, the ease with which she scat and sang bebop and standards and original music – you'll remember that you've heard Judi Singh sing for the rest of your life. Originally from Edmonton, gifted jazz singer Judi Singh defied expectations as a Punjabi-Black artist stepping onto the stage in the late 1950s. Though her ethereal voice captivated musicians and audiences, the music industry failed to give her the recognition she deserved—an all-too-familiar story for women and artists of colour. In this lively and deeply felt documentary portrait, Judi's daughter Emily Hughes and Baljit retrace Judi's life and music through archival recordings, intimate recollections, and the bohemian spaces she once inhabited. Weaving together moments of brilliance, struggle, and resilience, the film reintroduces a forgotten artist to the spotlight she always deserved.More people will have the opportunity to acquaint themselves with Judi's voice and her remarkable story after Have You Heard Judi Singh? has its world premiere at the 2025 DOXA Documentary Film Festival. Filmmaker Baljit Sangra returns to the podcast to discuss Judi's artistry and legacy. Episode sponsor: Directors Guild Of Canada, BC District Council

This week I'm bringing you a powerful conversation I had with Emily Hughes about a big but often unspoken topic in Motherhood: SHAME Emily is a Conscious Parenting Coach and founder of Finding Flow Parenting where she empowers parents to stay centred and grounded, and helps unearth the patterns and limiting beliefs keeping them stuck. Emily is also trained in Somatics and subsequently a big believer in brain body parenting and parenting in tune with all the nervous systems in the household. During this episode, Emily shares invaluable insights around WHY so many women find themselves struck down by shame during Motherhood, and tells her own story with so much openness and honesty during about how she experienced profound shame when she became a Mum - and the impact that had on her self-esteem, relationships and sense of identity as a whole. Emily goes on to shares the healing journey she went on in order to face, process and overcome her deep-rooted shame by cultivating what she describes as "Shame Resilience", which forms a core focus of her work, and she generously guides listeners to become more shame resilient themselves so they can ultimately live more authentic and joyful lives alongside raising their kids. I really hope this episode helps normalise some of these deeply uncomfortable feelings that can so commonly come up during Motherhood - because the more we talk about them, the less alone we'll all feel.FIND OUT MORE ABOUT EMILY HUGHES:- Follow Emily on Instagram HERE- Visit Emily's website and find out more about her work HERE- Access Emily's FREE masterclass: Stop Yelling & Start Thriving HEREABOUT ME! If that's you, or if you know someone who suffers from Weenie-ism, then Emily Hughes is here! Emily's new book, Horror For Weenies: Everything You Need to Know About the Films You're Too Scared to Watch is a public service for the scared. It will save relationships, help ease you into horror and hopefully teach you a thing or two about fear along the way. In this conversation, we talk about how Emily came to write this most particular of books, and how she chose which films made the grade. We also hear about her own relationship with horror, from the film that haunted her as a child all the way to her grown-up reintroduction to scary movies. And I finally try to back up my dislike for Hereditary. Enjoy. Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency designed to act as money and a form of payment. But for graphic designer Emily Hughes, it's also a passion. When she met Arnold Hubach and heard about his idea for a Bitcoin board game, she knew she wanted to be a part of it. The two created Block Hunters.

Not all of us are parents, and some of us are small children; however, many of us during this time will have the collision of teenagers, their exams stress and our period/menopause.It can be a heady combination as I well know when I was in the throes of perimenopause with the Tom doing the Australian HSC - it brought us to tears many times. In this episode of the 'Thriving Thru Menopause' podcast, host Clarissa Kristjansson engages with Emily Hughes, a co-founder of the Parent Guide to GCSEs and the Parent Guide to Post 16. They discuss the stress revolving around school exams during the phase of menopause and strategies to manage it. During these candid conversations, Emily shares how the guides provide support for parents, the struggle of teenagers in adapting to the academic curriculum, and the unique challenges teachers face. Apart from being an informative source regarding GCSEs, the guides also assist parents in understanding and supporting their teenagers' emotional and hormonal changes. The episode also highlights the need for holistic approaches to tackling menopause symptoms and encourages parental participation in the podcast community. Can you relate to feeling angry, exhausted, overwhelmed? I'm betting every parent has! And maybe you've even lost it on your kids or your partner. Cue the shame spiral. We've truly all been there, but we can't let our shame get the best of us! On this episode, I have the pleasure of talking about all things overwhelmed, angry, and exhausted with Emily Hughes, a Conscious Parent Coach, Somatic Therapist, and mom of two. She and I both share pretty vulnerable stories about times we've had all-out-rage just take over. Again, cue shame spiral. Like I said, we've ALL been there! Here is the good part! Emily and I dig into not only when this happens, but why. She shares all about the role of shame and how it could be contributing to anger and reactivity in your parenting. And she also shares how we can get back into our bodies in these moments to begin to break that cycle. Emily also explains how getting clear on your values might explain some of the anger you are experiencing. This is a great conversion for anyone who feels stuck in their angry, exhausted, and overwhelmed state and wants to get unstuck. And I walked away feeling so much more seen and understood, and much less alone in some of those tough emotions. You can connect with Emily for more support or you can reach out to me! Here is the sixth, and final, LitReactor ARChive episode. In this one, I chat with the two head honchos of LitReactor about the genesis of the site, the goals of the site, and some of the highlights over the years. Peppered throughout are some call-in audio clips from contributors. It's a nice little tribute to the site, and a fitting goodbye. I appreciate everything it worked for and represented over the years, and hopefully people like having this peek behind the curtain. You don't want to miss the next episode! It's the 2024 Horror Preview (Jan-June)! Becky Spratford and Emily Hughes join me to look ahead to the first half of the year, and talk about some of the books we're most looking forward to. It's a great conversation. Get full access to The ARC Party at www.thearcparty.com/subscribe
LitReactor, as we know it, is closing down. I'm reposting the episodes I hosted for Unprintable (their podcast) over here on The ARC Party, so that they don't go away when the site shuts down. This is the fifth of six episodes - a deep dive into grammar featuring LR's managing editor, and two LR columnists who both have written and/or taught classes on the topic of grammar. One more to go after this. I'm rounding out the series with my discussion with Rob Hart and Josh Chaplinsky - where they talk about how the site started, and some of the highlights of the first ten years. So keep an eye out for that, and also for my 2024 Horror Preview episode featuring Becky Spratford and Emily Hughes. It's not to be missed! This is the second of six ARC Party episodes, where I'm reposting my small run of episodes of their Unprintable podcast. As LitReactor is closing down, I wanted to give my episodes a place to live on, because they were great conversations that should not be lost to the ages. In this episode, Rob Hart joined to cohost an interview with SA Cosby, about his then-latest book RAZORBLADE TEARS. Rob was also on the cusp of the release of PARADOX HOTEL, so there was a good deal of discussion about that as well. This episode originally posted on Unprintable on 2/15/2022Coming soon:There are four more episodes of the LitReactor ARChives to come! Grammar, Interviews, Reviews, and the LR 10th Anniversary episode. Also, tomorrow I'm recording the ARC Party Look Ahead episode for the first half of 2024, with Becky Spratford and Emily Hughes. Very excited for this! Get full access to The ARC Party at www.thearcparty.com/subscribe
With the lights at LitReactor going dark for good in the coming weeks, I wanted to find a way to archive the handful of episodes that I recorded from them back in 2021. This is the first of six episodes, where I “re-air” the talks I hosted on their podcast, Unprintable. In this episode, Rob Hart joins me as a cohost to speak with Alma Katsu about her then-newly released book RED WIDOW, and also her then-upcoming book THE FERVOR. It's a great conversation, and I hope that if you haven't read Alma's work before, you're inspired to now. She writes great historical horror, as well as epsionage books! Coming soon, I'll be posting the other five episodes that I recorded with Unprintable, including an interview with SA Cosby, episodes on Grammar, Interviews, Reviews, and a 10th anniversary retrospective with Rob Hart and Josh Chaplinsky. Also, this week I'm recording an episode with Becky Spratford and Emily Hughes where we look ahead to our most anticipated books of the first half of 2024. As you can see, lots to come soon from Arc Party! I hope everyone has a great holiday season, enjoys some throwback episodes, and that you're all as excited as I am for what's coming in 2024! And so we come to the end of another year in horror. Time to look back at the best that 2023 has had to offer, as determined by three of the best in the business. My trusted horror chancellor, Emily Hughes joins me – alongside C.J. Leede, the author of this year's gloriously transgressive Maeve Fly, and the maestro of the macabre himself, Victor Lavalle. Together we cover the year's freshest nightmares in the macro and the micro, looking at wider trends and picking our own favourite horror fiction from this year's epic crop. This is a blast. She was working as a performer on a German cruise ship! After docking in Hambugg her singin' dancin' self took a look around and said 'I love this place!' This was a fun episode with a lot of digital marketing shop talk. Emily and I discussed:How a creating a course as a lead generator, sales asset and authority builder lead to thousands of euros in client contractsWhat exactly influencer marketing is. My (and maybe your?) understanding was a little, uh…simplisticOur different understandings of what a ‘start-up' is and why so many industries and businesses suddenly started ending with ‘techHow she got her initial clients by reaching out to people in a very niche industry which she where she had connectionsHow she cleverly bridges the gap between no influencer marketing and ridiculously expensive influencer marketing for her clientsEmily also shared her insights into how startups can leverage influencers to get their brand in front of their target audience and what it's like to have two skill sets (copywriting and influencer marketing). We discuss the difference between influencer marketing and PR and share some tips on how to find the influencers that will best represent your brand. It's not all business talk; Emily opens up about the challenges she faced when becoming self-employed in Germany and shares some advice for those considering the same path. Paul & Emily Hughes met in 2003 as trainee teachers assigned to the same school. It took a few years until they finally bonded over divorces and Emily's motorcycle leathers (long but obvious story), and the rest, as they say, is history. They've been happily married for almost 15 years, and now that they've both escaped teaching (their words, not mine), they run the Parent Guide to GCSE (and Post-16), supporting parents whose children are in Years 10-13. Emily has a Masters from Cambridge in Maths with Education, while Paul has a Masters in Information Management and Computing from University of Sheffield, which will probably tell you what they each taught for 15 years. Emily also runs a Pop Choir in her spare time, as she says she still needs to be able to boss people around having left teaching. It's that time of year again. A time to reflect, to look back over a tumultuous twelve months, and to talk about the horror books that helped us survive them.2022 has been a helluva year for the good kind of horror. Far too much for one man to cover. So I've drafted in some highly qualified friends – Emily Hughes and Janelle Janson. They have their fingers right on the arterial spurt of the genre – and they have each read far more than me.Together we deliver this year's State of the Horror Nation – talking about big issues in horror, the key books we've adored…and the dozens and dozens of titles we're looking forward to in 2023.We raise a glass to a late and beloved horror icon, we make some new year's resolutions, and Janelle and Emily get a bit squeaky about their big horror crush.
