The highly anticipated Ballerina, a spin-off from the popular John Wick franchise, faces a 12-month delay and is now set to hit theatres on June 6, 2025. Despite the disappointment of the postponement, fans can expect an even more spectacular film as series creator Chad Stahelski joins director Len Wiseman to shoot additional action scenes. The movie, set between the events of John Wick 3 and John Wick 4, features Ana de Armas as the lead alongside returning stars Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane, Gabriel Byrne, and the late Lance Reddick. The decision to position the film in this timeline adds an element of suspense regarding the fate of Reeves' character. The plot follows a young female assassin, portrayed by de Armas, seeking revenge for the murder of her family, promising an intense and gripping cinematic experience.

“Can a man like you know peace?”We're Back With John as He Takes on the Italian MafiaJohn Wick: Chapter 2 starts mid-action sequence as John fights Viggo's brother to get his car back. It sets up the action for this film, and sets up John's motivations. He's a man stuck in the past who clings to his relics. Once he has his car, he even goes so far as to try breaking the rules to stay out of the business. Unfortunately, he's not allowed, which propels this film. There's a lot more world-building in this film to set all of this up. How does it work? Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our look at the John Wick series with a conversation about Chad Stahelski's 2017 follow-up John Wick: Chapter 2.Here's a hint at what we talk about. This is an R-rated world of violence. What's interesting is that, given the opportunity to include nudity as well, Stahelski opts to avoid it. That tells us a lot about the specific world-view we're meant to take away from this movie. It's one of violence, not sex, even if it's full of sexy, well-dressed people who know how to fight. To that end, the stunts and action are amped up and enjoyable. It helps that the film is so beautiful to look at, particularly that final fight sequence through the museum and hall of mirrors. We get a prolonged stunt sequence midway through the film as John leaves his assassination of Gianna then has to fight dozens of hitmen, not to mention Common and Ruby Rose, both playing bodyguards. But how does this expanded world of hitmen work? Are they making a mess of it or does it work for us? And how about the new rules involving blood oaths? It's actually quite interesting. If there's an area we like but worry it may become too convoluted in later films, it's the 12-member High Table with the various mob families, not to mention the Bowery and all the other various groups that seem to be involved in crime here. Regardless, it all makes for a fun film. We have a great time talking about it, so check it out then tune in. Editor Joshua Essoe discusses tips for drafting and editing your action sequences to ensure that the reader isn't pulled out of the story – tips that apply even if your scene doesn't involve battle plans or broadswords. He talks about the importance of strong, engaging characters, because if your reader doesn't care about the people involved, no amount of exciting action is going to draw them in. And he discusses how you can save your editor time – and yourself money – by paying attention to the logistics of the scene: don't have a character holding a knife in one hand and a shield in another hand their magic amulet in the … well, the other other hand. Joshua Essoe is a full-time freelance editor who has edited for New York Times and USA Today bestsellers, and many top-notch independents and award-winners. He was lead editor at Urban Fantasy Magazine from 2014-2015. You can find Joshua teaching about editing, pitches, and back-cover copy every year at the Superstars Writing Seminar in Colorado. And he just completed his Kickstarter release for the first in a five-book series, each covering two subjects of the most-common issues he sees in fiction writing.

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.08.27.270694v1?rss=1 Authors: Reddy, G., Desban, L., Tanaka, H., Roussel, J., Wyart, C. Abstract: Animals display characteristic behavioral patterns when performing a task, such as the spiraling of a soaring bird or the surge-and-cast of a male moth searching for a female. Identifying such conserved patterns occurring rarely in noisy behavioral data is key to understanding the behavioral response to a distributed stimulus in unrestrained animals. Existing models seek to describe the dynamics of behavior or segment individual locomotor episodes rather than to identify occasional, transient irregularities that make up the behavioral response. To fill this gap, we develop a lexical, hierarchical model of behavior. We designed an unsupervised algorithm called "BASS" to efficiently identify and segment conserved behavioral action sequences transiently occurring in long behavioral recordings. When applied to navigating larval zebrafish, BASS extracts a dictionary of remarkably long, non-Markovian sequences consisting of repeats and mixtures of slow forward and turn bouts. Applied to a novel chemotaxis assay, BASS uncovers conserved chemotactic strategies deployed by zebrafish to avoid aversive cues consisting of sequences of fast large-angle turns and burst swims. In a simulated dataset of soaring gliders climbing thermals, BASS finds the spiraling patterns characteristic of soaring behavior. In both cases, BASS succeeds in identifying action sequences that are highly conserved but transient in the behavior deployed by freely moving animals. BASS can be easily incorporated into the pipelines of existing behavioral analyses across diverse species, and even more broadly used as a generic algorithm for pattern recognition in low-dimensional sequential data.
