When we stand barefoot with our feet in the water at the beach, we can notice how the waves are washing away the sand from under our feet. We don't stand on firm ground, the sand we stand on is constantly eroding, making our posture unstable, unreliable and impermanet. Ajahn Dhammasiha uses this experience as a simile for sankhārā ('conditioned phenomena'). Everything that is conditioned, that arises due to causes and conditions, will inevitably change and vanish when the conditions are exhausted. Just like standing on eroding sand, our illusion of Self is resting on sankhārā (form, feelings, perceptions, intentions, consciousness...). But this illusion is unstable, as the sankhārā it stands on are unstable themselves. If we see that clearly, we won't be able to by into the illusion anymore, and it collpses, feeing us to experience what is Not-Self, Not-Impermanent, Unconditioned, Nibbāna! In this podcast, Eckhart talks about the importance of connecting with what he calls unconditioned consciousness. He says it's the source of all creativity and true intelligence. Eckhart explains when we're in this place, mental noise stops and thinking recedes and what remains is aware stillness. He says that is the beginning of awakening. He explains we may sustain this state for a while and then lose it again. For him, it's part of the process. He encourages everyone to keep a foot in both worlds: the everyday and the transcendent because then greater intelligence flows through us. Eckhart says this leap forward in consciousness is the next step for humanity. He believes without more spiritual development we will not survive.Want more podcasts from OWN? Being Present (Seeing the World with an Unconditioned Heart) Being present means shedding the filters of judgment, expectation, and reactivity that color our experience of the world. It's about witnessing each moment with the open curiosity of a child. Our hearts, often hardened by past hurts or future worries, become filters through which we perceive everything. An unconditioned heart is one that is soft, receptive, and free of these habitual judgments. When we see the world through this lens, we rediscover the beauty and wonder in the ordinary. The simple act of sunlight on a leaf, the sound of rain, or the curve of a stranger's smile can spark genuine appreciation without the need to analyze, categorize, or compare. Seeing the world with an unconditioned heart fosters a deep sense of connection. When we drop our preconceived notions, we find common threads of humanity in others. We notice shared joys, shared struggles, and recognize our place in the greater tapestry of life. This connection erodes the boundaries of self and other, dissolving feelings of isolation and fostering a profound sense of compassion. In this state of being, the world is not something we must conquer or analyze, but a place to participate in, a place to belong. Earth Dreams: Zen Buddhism and the Soul of the World

The question of life purpose is one that comes up throughout our lives. Maybe you are in a life transitionMaybe you started out pursuing one career because family or societal pressure and now want to do something that is more in alignment with your heartMaybe you are in a career change for another more unexpected reasonOr are feeling the heat of the climate crisis and fraying of culture–that you wonder–what can be done? What can I do?To be willing to ask the question What is this life about? What is my offering? What do I do now, with these resources and time? What is my legacy? What is my Vow? Or Heart's Aspiration? Has the potential to connect us to something beyond or individual human life. This talk is an exploration of our unconditioned vows or primary vows. An exploration of what we want to live for or from, no matter what the conditions of our lives. Whether we are healthy, sick, in a natural disaster or working a job that we don't like, but need. What is the moment to moment vow or intention that guides your life? How do we re-connect to our heart's aspiration when maybe we feel confused or out of sync? The unconditioned vow is the foundation for re-connecting with purpose. This is the first talk in a series of talks exploring vow and life's purpose from a dharma lens. This is a public episode. "The rain could turn to gold and still your thirst would not be slaked' the Buddha said. In this episode we explore the connection between the Buddhist teachings of emptiness and craving. Understanding this connection is fundamental to understanding the nature of suffering and the path to liberation. Emptiness (Shunyata) Emptiness refers to the fundamental nature of reality, which is devoid of inherent, fixed, or independent existence. The empty nature of all things is the opposite of how we normally perceive reality. If we see something as beautiful, we do not think our mind has anything to do with creating that beauty. We see a table, and we naturally think a table has an inherent identity as a table.  According to the Buddha, all phenomena, including physical objects, mental states, and even the self, lack an unchanging essence or self-nature. Emptiness is not a form of nothingness, but rather the absence of inherent, permanent, or self-existing characteristics. Craving (Tanha) or Thirst Craving (Tanha) is another crucial concept in Buddhism, often identified as the root cause of suffering. Sometimes Tanha is translated as “greed,” “attachment,” or “thirst.” In this episode, we related to this concept mainly as thirst. Thirst can be understood as a relentless attachment to sensory pleasures, material possessions, and other living beings. Thirst/craving is not merely enjoying these things, but becoming attached to them, so that if we can't have them or they disappoint us, we suffer. Buddha said attachment is like tasting honey on the razor's edge; the first taste is sweet, but, inevitably, pain follows.   Understanding the connection between emptiness and craving At the deepest level, thirst arises due to our ignorance of the true nature of reality, emptiness. According to the teachings of emptiness, nothing arises independently or in isolation. Instead, everything arises in dependence on causes and conditions. Emptiness means that all things lack inherent existence. For example, all things in reality depend on the name they are given, their function, label, and our mind's imputation (and more). Craving arises due to ignorance of this interdependent nature of things. We develop attachments and desires based on the mistaken idea of independent and fixed things of beauty or pleasure. We don't think that our mind is creating the beauty or pleasure we're craving, but it is!  Cessation of Craving and Liberation The Buddha taught that the cessation of craving leads to the cessation of suffering. The realization of the emptiness of all phenomena leads to the eradication of ignorance and, consequently, the cessation of craving. When craving is extinguished, suffering ceases, and one attains enlightenment, O Brahmana, cut off the stream of craving with diligence, and abandon sense desires. O Brahmana, perceiving the cessation of the conditioned, be an arahat who realizes Nibbana, the Unconditioned. (Verse 383) —Buddha, The Dhammapada. References and Links Buddha. The Dhammapada. In this piece I hope to offer more clarity around this state of awareness. You'll hear about your own personal doorway to a place in consciousness where all things are possible. This is the field of infinite, pure potentiality from which all things have proceeded. I want to help make you aware of the reality of this pure, raw, unconditioned field so that you eventually develop an always on awareness of this Unconditioned Source Energy. When you do, you will realize this is your essence, and you have been given the power, being of it, to mold and shape it intentionally and deliberately.I often tell you that you can be, do and have it all; the desires of your heart, personally and professionally, and this is true. In this episode I continue to lead you into this field from which all things have come. You must rise higher in conscious awareness of this field of infinite potential. When you consciously move to an awareness of Unconditioned Source Energy you'll realize you are the creator of your experiences, that nothing is withheld from you, and that you are the creator of your conditions – desirable or undesirable – including any false limitations you may be placing on yourself.Isn't it time you satisfy any longing and discontent you may have been experiencing by living your worthy, ideal life? 5.02 Classical and Operant Conditioning Psychiatry review for the USMLE Step 1 Exam Classical Conditioning: Pavlovian conditioning discovered by Ivan Pavlov, a Russian physiologist known for his experiments with dogs. Learning through association. Example: Conditioning dogs to respond to a noise the way they would respond to meat. Involves associating an unconditioned stimulus with a new conditioned stimulus to elicit the same response. Process of Classical Conditioning: Start with a stimulus that produces a response (e.g., smelling pizza makes you hungry). Pair the stimulus and response with an unconditioned stimulus (e.g., receiving a text indicating pizza delivery). Eventually, the conditioned stimulus (the text notification) alone elicits the conditioned response (mouth watering). Extinction and Spontaneous Recovery in Classical Conditioning: If the conditioned stimulus (text notification) is presented without the unconditioned stimulus (pizza), the conditioned response (mouth watering) will weaken and eventually extinguish. Spontaneous recovery may occur, where the conditioned behavior briefly reappears after a period of extinction. Terms in Classical Conditioning: Unconditioned stimulus (US): Triggers a response unconditionally. Unconditioned response (UR): The response elicited by the unconditioned stimulus. Conditioned stimulus (CS): Initially neutral stimulus that becomes associated with the unconditioned stimulus. Conditioned response (CR): The response elicited by the conditioned stimulus. Operant Conditioning: Developed by B.F. Skinner. Learning occurs through rewards and punishments for behavior. Three types of responses: neutral operants, reinforcers, and punishers. Examples of Operant Conditioning: Positive reinforcement: Giving a child candy for good behavior. Negative reinforcement: Taking away a child's phone until homework is done to increase desired behavior. Positive punishment: Using physical force as punishment (not recommended). Negative punishment: Taking away a child's phone to decrease unwanted behavior. Different Schedules of Reinforcement: Continuous Reinforcement: Positive reinforcement every time a specific behavior occurs. Fixed Ratio Reinforcement: Reinforcement after a specified number of correct responses. Fixed Interval Reinforcement: Reinforcement after a fixed time interval with at least one correct response. Variable Ratio Reinforcement: Reinforcement after an unpredictable number of responses. Variable Interval Reinforcement: Reinforcement after an unpredictable amount of time. Summary: Classical conditioning involves learning through association of stimuli. Operant conditioning involves learning through rewards and punishments for behavior.

Unconditioned and Conditioned Anxiolytic Effects of Sodium Valproate on Flavor Neophobia and Fear Conditioning

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.12.09.519825v1?rss=1 Authors: Cintado, M. A., Gonzalez-Tirado, G., Carcel, L., De la Casa, L. G. Abstract: In three experiments with rats, we analyzed the potential anxiolytic effects of sodium valproate, an anticonvulsant drug that has shown additional pharmacodynamic effects in animal models, including anxiolytic action. Since previous results have revealed that injecting valproate before allowing animals to consume a novel flavor solution resulted in an attenuation of neophobia, we predicted a similar effect when the novel flavor is presented on a drug-free trial in the presence of a context previously associated with the drug. In line with this hypothesis, in our first experiment we observed a reduction in neophobia to a novel flavor for those animals tested in the presence of the context associated with Sodium Valproate. However, a control group that received the drug before being allowed access to the novel flavor showed a significant reduction in consumption. Experiment 2 revealed that the unconditioned effects of the drug include a deleterious effect on the animals' locomotor activity that probably interferes with drinking behavior. Finally, in a third experiment, we directly tested the potential anxiolytic properties of sodium valproate by injecting the drug before implementing a fear conditioning procedure. These findings are explained in terms of the unconditioned anxiolytic action of the drug and the formation of an association between the context and the effects of the drug that evokes a conditioned response reminiscent of such anxiolytic effect. Ajahn Dhammasiha offers some reflections on the three characteristics of all conditioned phenomena, versus the three characteristics of the Unconditioned . 3 Qualities of all conditioned phenomena (sankhata-lakkhaṇāni): Coming into existence can be discerned Passing away can be discerned Change while persisting can be discerned 3 Qualities of the Unconditioned (asankhata-lakkhaṇāni): No coming into existence can be discerned No passing away can be discerned No change while persisting can be discerned (Anguttara Nikāya/Numerical Discourses, Book of Threes, #47 & #48) Both groups are very unequal: Conditioned phenomena is ablsolutely everything a unenlightened person has ever experienced: Whether one's own body, or other bodies, or material objects; whether feelings or thoughts or emotions; whether forms or sights or fragrances... all arise and pass away and change, which means they are conditioned. The only phenomenon that's Unconditioned is Nibbāna, the experience of total freedom in the heart of those that have fully realized the Dhamma and are liberated from craving and suffering. From this follows, that all we really have to do in vipassanā meditation, is checking out whatever comes up in our experince, if it has any of the 3 qualities of conditioned phenomena. If we can discern arising or passing away or change, it's only a 'sankhāra', a conditioned phenomenon, and the task is to let it go. Once we can let go of everything conditioned, we experience the Unconditioned, realization of the Dhamma, resulting in at least the first stage of enlightenment, stream entry (sotāpatti). What if, when you stopped thinking and doing all the things you thought you MUST think and do to succeed, all the things you wanted actually started arriving in your life faster than ever… without a to-do list, a must-do list, or a do-or-die list? That's exactly what I talked about in this episode with the lovely Daniela Sulek. Juggling life for years led Daniela to hit a wall. Her entire way of life and being changed when what she now calls “humaning” led to her developing serious illnesses while pregnant with her third child, and almost cost her her life.  Now, with her “play your way through life” philosophy, she now helps renowned yet unfulfilled leaders move into a permanent state of ease, joy, and passion – without to-do lists (seriously). THE GOODS The conditioned mind, higher consciousness, and “humaning”: what it all actually means What it feels like to live from the unconditioned mind vs. the conditioned mind Why you can hit your goals without doing 90% of the stuff you think you “have to” do The drastic changes that happened for Daniela when she let go of mental conditioning – in her work, relationships, family, and even dreams Running a business from higher consciousness mode How to raise your children to live in joy + consciousness (it's probably not what you think) And oh, man, SO much more!   RESOURCES: CONNECT WITH DANIELA! An insightful look into the obstacles posed by addictions to social media influences, unhappiness, and narcissism — and what it takes to open yourself to a greater vision for your life and in your relationships, by moving into a place of acceptance.

Accessing the Unconditioned Mind - Jonathan Harrison

Jonathan Harrison's work is in learning to become more realistic.   The more we connect to what's really happening as opposed to what we think, we realize that what we think is our creativity operating, but the real world is just happening (including our thinking which is part of the real world). Then from this more realistic viewpoint, what we think ceases to disturb us because we realize it has no particular validity or meaning whatsoever, other than expressing our state of mind at the point that we may express it. The Unconditioned Mind: With a direct view of reality as it is, in which things that aren't real don't disturb you. You might call it a gentle adjustment or correction to our faulty education. Anger is a physical and mental state which we sometimes get into. When we're angry, it's temporary insanity and our judgment isn't as good at that time.  People who attack with anger are generally in the greatest need. Happiness is a biological drive that can cause anger. There's always pain hiding behind anger. Listening to an angry person can diffuse their anger. Confusion is a common reaction to this work, along with fear and the whole spectrum of emotions. Ultimately there is no terminology in this work, and it doesn't depend on any theory. For these reasons, it can get strange very quickly. We are all scientists. Nobody understands anything, but this doesn't stop us from trying. The process of learning is updating our expectations according to the evidence. If you can accept that what's happening now is not what you think, you immediately may face an open space of pure awareness in which you don't know what to be aware of, you don't know who's aware, you don't know what awareness is, and it really doesn't matter anymore. The goal is awareness of things as they are, as opposed to things as you think they are. In this work we don't start from the assumption that a problem exists so there's nothing to heal or solve, and we don't start with the assumption that a problem doesn't exist so everything is open. If there's a problem and you have a solution, no need to worry. If there's a problem and you don't have a solution, there's also no need to worry. Be wary of any teacher who is claiming to be enlightened, they may have missed the point.

In today's episode, Brett interviews Heather Falenski, documentary filmmaker, adventure athlete and humanitarian worker. Her early career included several years of working on the African continent with refugees and others displaced by war. She is the founder of One World Media, a film production company based in Boulder, Colorado.Heather led a fast-paced life working in some of the world's most remote and challenging environments. Although her work was fulfilling, it was also physically and mentally taxing. It culminated into a severe chronic illness that left her bedridden for over a year. Heather discusses an epiphany that she had after hitting rock bottom that allowed her to move beyond impossible circumstances to regain health and stability.“The greatest power that we have is to say: I AM that. And whatever “that” is, it's what we're defining ourselves to be. It's what our concept of self is. We can define ourselves in any way that we want. We can say, I'm a filmmaker. I am healthy. I am respected. And once we hold that state as our dominant state of consciousness over a period of time, the outer world will start to conform and reflect that back to us.” What we discuss in Episode 43:07:30     The urge to control outer conditions and why it often leads to failure.10:30     Stabilizing your inner landscape as a way of getting consistent results in the outer world.14:09     Unconditioned consciousness as your natural state beneath all of the things that you identify with.19:00     How to consciously shift into a desired self-concept, rather than allowing it to be dictated by outer circumstances.29:11     Gratitude as a state of allowing a process to unfold, even if it takes some unexpected turns.32:04     How hitting rock bottom can lead you to the necessary conditions to completely recreate yourself. **Full transcript coming soon! Ajahn Chah once stated that in 40+ years as a monk, it's only two things he has found: 'Not Sure' and 'Patient Endurance'. The Pali term 'anicca' is usually translated as 'impermanent'. However, the actual meaning is much wider, and includes 'not sure', 'uncertain', 'unreliable'.Ajahn Dhammasiha encourages us to push ahead and fearlessly contemplate all phenomena, whether external material possessions or internal moods, thought and emotions, as 'not sure'. This can feel scary at first, but if we keep up with our contemplation of anicca, we can sweep the mind clear and empty, to realize the only possible escape from the world of uncertainty: The experience of the Unconditioned in our own heart. www.dhammagiri.netwww.facebook.com/dhammagiri-forest-hermitagewww.youtube.com/channel/UCJINt0JJBfFm_x0FZcU9QJwwww.tinyletter.com/dhammagiri/archive

This week's podcast focusses on recognizing all of the things which condition you—in other words, whatever causes you to emotionally react. As you observe yourself and become aware of your reactions to people, places, or things, you begin to isolate the ego. You become aware of its false presence. As you transcend your habitual reactions to the mind and the world, you also begin to transcend the ego. In doing so, you move beyond being stuck in a conditioned and reactionary egoic state, to one of pure, unconditioned presence—at peace with both yourself and the world.
