Maggie Rettelle has been on a quest to run a sub-3 marathon. Having qualified for IronMan Kona twice and run a 3:30 marathon off the bike, Maggie believed she had the strength and grit to get it done. Race experiences and her fire to achieve it shaped her to dive deeper into nutrition, fueling, sleep, mantras, and her mental game. As athletes, we all hope for a perfect training cycle. We root for the best weather and optimal conditions to help us smash our goals. On Saturday 5/21 in Chattanooga, Maggie CRUSHED a sub-5 Half IronMan, running her fastest 1/2 (1:36) off the bike and WON her age group by an astonishing 12 minutes! 7 days later, on 5/28, she laced 'em up at the Bayshore Marathon where she ROCKED a 2:58:02, smashed down the sub-3 door, and made her dream come true. Maggie is a board-certified health & wellness coach and USAT Level 1 certified triathlon coach at TS2 Coaching and is all about community and giving back. So much of our RunChat centers on gratitude. For anyone who has struggled with their nutrition, race day fueling plans, or mindset, there are SO many great takeaways. I hope you all enjoy this conversation as much as I did! If you enjoy the episode, it would mean the world to me if you would rate the podcast or write a review and share feedback wherever you get your podcast groove on. Andrew Kalley has qualified 8x for the ITU World Championship to represent Team USA. He has 12 Overall Wins, including the NYC Triathlon, Stamford Triathlon, South Beach Triathlon, and the Montauk Triathlon. Even while undergoing chemo, he still qualified for Worlds in 2015 (and was nominated to raise the USA flag at the Opening Ceremony. For the past 11 years, Andrew Kalley has been an elite athlete and triathlon coach for the most impressive tri team in the Northeast. Full Throttle Endurance based in New York City with over 100 members who have won the New York City Triathlon for 10 years since 2007, won the South Beach Triathlon every year since racing it beginning in 2007, and won the USAT National Team Championship 5x including in 2017. Progress not perfection is all we ever need to continue our trek towards mastery. A focus on process rather than the goal will help to keep us aligned with this path. What we master is of our choice. In the case of today's guest, Shane Eversfield, otherwise known as ZenMan, the path to mastery is triathlon. Considered by Shane to be an art form, his triathlon training is focused on crafting the perfect technique as the means to obtain kinetic intelligence. His road to going longer with less effort and taking less of a toll on his body. His commitment to technique is founded on the basis of mindful movement, a practice he's been engaged in for his entire adult life. Shane holds a B.A. in Modern Dance and has been a practitioner of T'ai Chi and mindful running since the late 1970's. His pursuit of mastering technique in his sport has been the basis for his massive athletic accomplishments, including racing Ironman Lake Placid on PowerCranks, finishing 12th overall at the Hawaii Ultraman World Championship and his latest endeavor, a solo 99 hours of movement celebration which totaled 500 miles of swim, bike, run. He completed this incredible feat to raise awareness for ALS in honor of his step-brother who lost his life to this neurodegenerative disease a few years ago. Shane is the author of Zendurance: A Spiritual Fitness Guide for Endurance Athletes which teaches how to gain "effortless power" using simple zen techniques. Although a USAT Level 1 coach and Total Immersion Master coach, Shane considers himself more of a counselor for the athletes rather than a coach. He admits that he's only agreed to "train" one athlete in his history and this was because the athlete had already climbed Mt. Everest. Shane, feeling confident in his athlete's mental sturdiness, agreed to train him for Ironman Lake Placid a number of years ago. Shane says he hesitates to write a plan for someone because he's afraid they would follow it in lieu of developing the deep felt sense required to truly become a Zendurance athlete. Finding Shane was like finding the long lost sibling of YogiTriathlete and we are thrilled to bring a mindfulness based ultra endurance athlete of this caliber to the YT audience. It was an honor to sit down with the ZenMan himself and we found ourselves captivated by his wisdom gained through decades of practicing what he teaches, mindfulness in motion.
