Marten Van Riel joins us today to talk about the craziness of his debut Ironman in Cozumel where he was leading at 165km after having been solo all day before crashing his bike and colliding with a young girl on the side of the bike course. He went on to have the fastest marathon of the day running 2:39 but because of the time spent on the side of the rode he didn't win or get his Ironman World Championship qualifying slot. We hear all the details from Marten in his first podcast since it happened. Sarah Svensk's transition from doctor to triathlete illustrates her remarkable resilience and adaptability, overcoming substantial challenges to excel in a completely new field. Starting her triathlon journey in 2015 in Germany, Sarah quickly turned professional despite having no traditional background in endurance sports.    In this episode, Sarah discusses overcoming recurring injuries, notably stress fractures, and how adjusting her training and recovery strategies was crucial. She highlights her record-setting performances at Ironman Barcelona and Ironman Cozumel, emphasizing the role of rigorous training, expert coaching, and the Lever Movement system in maintaining her competitive edge and managing her recovery.   Sarah shares her ambitions for the upcoming season, including competing pain-free and aiming for the World Championships. She offers insights into managing bone stress injuries and balancing training with recovery, providing valuable advice for athletes facing similar setbacks.   Quotes “There was an overlap when I was trying to balance working 50% and being a triathlete, but it was hard. It's easy to get the training in, but to get the recovery and all the other necessary stuff, it's very hard to balance with a day job, actually.” (02:05 | Sara Svensk) “In the beginning, you get devastated when you get an injury. In triathlon, there are so many other things you can do. If you have these bone reactions, then you can usually swim and usually bike, so you can develop that side of the sport. But then mentally, it's super hard and you lose the trust in your body… It's just like regaining the trust in the body again. But then I'm also surprised because I always heal. The body's amazing.” (16:03 | Sara Svensk)  “For the Mallorca race now, I didn't have the biggest build for the run. I think the longest run I did was 12k, but I had the lever. And I think that was a game changer for me, because then I could add on some mileage. First and foremost, I could start the run build a lot more secure and with lower impact. And then I could add some mileage and actually a little bit of speed.” (26:13 | Sara Svensk) “The best thing is that almost all the stress fractures heal. And I think just stay calm in that. Take time off. Don't stress about it. It will heal. Just give it time.” (39:45 | Sara Svensk)   Links Connect with Sara Svensk: https://www.instagram.com/svensksara/?hl=en https://www.instagram.com/levermovement/  https://www.instagram.com/bradmiles/ https://levermovement.com/ Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Mark Meuser is a native Californian with a proven record of fighting for your constitutional rights. From a young age, Mark was an entrepreneur. At age 12, he picked cherries in the morning and then operated a street-side cherry stand in the afternoon. He also worked hard at caring for orphaned animals, often bottle-feeding sheep, pigs, and cows.By age 15, he was in a management position at a local restaurant. By age 21, he purchased his own pizza restaurant. While his restaurant business was thriving, Meuser started studying law. A few years later, he graduated with honors from Oak Brook College of Law. Meuser's unique training has taught him how to listen to people, formulate creative alternatives, and achieve workable solutions to real problems. As an attorney, Meuser secured an important victory for disabled Americans against United Airlines. In Gilstrap v. United Airlines, Meuser represented a disabled American injured by United when it failed to follow applicable federal law in how it handled her travel. The 9th Circuit agreed with Meuser that federal law permitted disabled Americans to sue airlines if those airlines failed to care for passengers as  the law provided. In 2017, Meuser joined the Dhillon Law Group where he has focused on Election, Political, and Constitutional Law. At Dhillon Law Group, he has had  the privilege of protecting critical First Amendment rights, for example, by defending Troy Worden from a frivolous lawsuit brought against him by Yvette Felarca, a national organizer for the organization “By Any Means Necessary,” one of Antifa's front groups.Meuser was also involved in a lawsuit against Governor Gavin Newsom when California tried to remove President Trump's name from the primary ballot by unconstitutionally changing the qualifications to run for President. Over the last year, Meuser has been involved in 22 lawsuits brought against Newsom for his unconstitutional usurpation of power as a result of COVID-19.In his free time, Meuser loves being outdoors, enjoying California's natural beauty. Whether he is hiking, bike riding, sailing, scuba diving, or snow skiing, Meuser is always quick to enjoy the diversity this state has to offer. Meuser's favorite bike ride was a five-day trip riding down the Pacific Coast Highway from San Francisco to Orange County. When Meuser was young, he saw a Saturday afternoon sports special covering an Ironman. Impressed by the athletes who competed in it, in 2014 Meuser registered to compete in his first Ironman and was fully prepared to do the 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike ride, and marathon run. However, the event was canceled at the last minute due to the local forest fires. As Meuser rode his bike back to his car, he was in a devastating bicycle accident. Not to be deterred from his vision of completing an Ironman, Meuser registered for the same event a year later, only to run into unplanned difficulties. The third time is the charm, as three months later, he tried again, finishing the Ironman Cozumel in 12 hours and 45 minutes. In 2021, Meuser finished his second full Ironman at Ironman Coeur d'Alene. In 2020, Meuser was ranked by Ironman as the third best male in his age group (45-49) in the United States for the half-Ironman distance (1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile run).Meuser is a prolific reader, on average reading one book a week. Most of the books he has read are on the topics of American history and biography. Meuser also has a large collection of American political biographies, United States and California State Histories that were published over 100 years ago.

This week on the IronWomen Podcast, Haley and Alyssa are chatting with Swedish professional triathlete and medical doctor Sara Svensk. Sara raced her first triathlon in 2014, by 2015 she won her age group at the ITU Long course world championship and at the 70.3 distance national championship in Sweden. With her quick rise to the top of the age group ranks, Sara decided to make the jump to professional racing in 2016. Since then, Sara has amassed numerous podium and top ten finishes at both the Ironman and 70.3 distances, including numerous wins in 2019. After this incredible year, Sara was poised to make an even bigger splash in 2020. However, with the disruption of races and facing a global pandemic Sara made the decision to return to practicing medicine full time in 2020 where she felt she was most needed.  Even with the break in racing, Sara knew she would return to taking on the pro ranks. After a bout of COVID-19 and ensuing cardiac complications, Sara's return to racing was slower than she hoped it would be. Sara Svensk won Ironman Cozumel 2021 in a new Ironman-branded World Record of 8.22.:40. This would be incredible enough, but, as we'll hear in the interview, she did this on less than four months of training! After contracting Covid in May, Sara had ongoing health problems, including heart problems that ECG indicated could have been related to a heart attack. Following 6 week of no training at all, and numerous medical investigations, she was given the all clear to return to gentle training, and, 4 months later, was able to produce that incredible performance in Mexico. I hope this interview gives hope to anyone struggling with a health condition that it is possible to return to full health and fitness!Sponsorshttps://www.precisionhydration.com/ - Multi-strength electrolytes that match how you sweat, and Precision Fuel 30 Gel and Drink mix to ensure enough carbohydrate to perform at your best.
