Jake and Ron are honored and thrilled to have author Catriona Ward on the podcast! Her latest novel is Looking Glass Sound published by Tor Nightfire.https://tornightfire.com/catalog/looking-glass-sound-catriona-ward/https://us.macmillan.com/author/catrionawardI recently caught Catriona Ward at the Brookline Booksmith in Massachusetts, where she sat on a panel with former Wrath of the iOtians guest Christopher Golden and the inimitable Gretchen Felker-Martin, author of Manhunt. And it's obvious that Catriona's fan base is large and adoring, and rightly so. She has a generosity of spirit that's immediately palpable. Look no further than her willingness to talk with us in the midst of an exhausting cross country book tour. Catriona's work is influenced by her globetrotting youth. She was born in Washington, D. C., but grew up, well, all over, with stops in Kenya, Madagascar, Yemen, England, and Morocco. Catriona earned her undergraduate degree in English Literature at Oxford, and a Master's in Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia. In 2015, she brought her experience, education, and energy to bear on Rawblood. Published as The Girl from Rawblood in the U. S. in 2016, the book signaled the arrival of a major new talent in horror fiction and won an August Derleth Award at the British Fantasy Awards to boot. Catriona followed up in 2019 with Little Eve, which also won a Derleth and a Shirley Jackson Award. In 2022, Catriona blew readers, critics, and no less an authority than Stephen King himself away with The Last House on Needless Street, a mind bender of a novel that I hope every iOtian listener has already enjoyed. The book won an amazing third Derleth Award for Catriona. And was also shortlisted for the World Fantasy Award, the British Book Award, and a Red Tentacle Kitschie, which, for those not in the know, is a juried prize awarded for elevating the tone of genre literature. 2023 brought us Sundial, which was nominated for the Bram Stoker and Locus Awards. Of its author, Danielle Trussoni of the New York Times remarked, “Ward is willing to go places so dark, so dismal, that it borders on sadism.” In our line of work, that's high praise. Elevated horror indeed. Catriona combines elements of the psychological thriller, the gothic, and a hallucinatory high strangeness to create a voice that is uniquely hers. No one else could have written Looking Glass Sound, her other 2023 release with Tor Nightfire. Which I might add continues to publish the best of the best of contemporary horror. Catriona spoke with us about this book from a hotel room in the Twilight Zone, en route to her next speaking gig. We are so happy to have author C.S Humble kick off Season 4! C. S. Humble is on a mission. He wants to help us be better people. The author of the now completed The Light Sublime Trilogy, two of a projected five books in the Blackwell series, and Minotaur, a collection of short stories, this award winning horror writer has a flair for placing morally complex characters in harrowing situations to demonstrate the best and worst people can be. He claims he's long winded, but we found he just had a lot to say about the human condition, the pleasures and perils of book publishing, and his beloved Texas. He spoke with us from a plushly appointed study in his home outside Houston about the newly published third book in the weird western The Light Sublime series, The Light of a Black Star, which follows the Massacre at Yellow Hill and A Red Winter in the West.C.S. Jake and Ron celebrate Halloween 2023 by chatting with Nat Segaloff about his remarkable new book The Exorcist Legacy 50 Years Of Fear! It was too much fun listening to Nat and all of his stories. And Nat is an authority of The Exorcist; He was friends with both William Peter Blatty and William Friedkin! If you are a true fan of The Exorcist you're going to love The Exorcist Legacy 50 Years Of Fear! It's been half a century since "The Exorcist" possessed the world's imaginations, and Nat Segaloff was on board from the day before the film opened in 1973. Here is a minute look at not only William Friedkin's monumental motion picture but at all the sequels, prequels, and TV series that spun off of it. Nat is Friedkin's biographer and brings his insights into what has been called the scariest movie of all time. Happy Halloween from the iOtians! We're celebrating by replaying our most downloaded episode ever! All Hallows takes place on Halloween Night in 1984. Do yourself a favor and read this book after all the trick-or-treaters are done taking your precious candy!Jake and Ron chat with the New York Times bestseller and two-time Bram Stoker Award winner about his latest novel, All Hallows! The book is set in 1984 in Massachusetts. Since Jake and Christopher both live near the Boston area, they end up talking not only about All Hallows, but about common experiences they had as horror fans growing up in the New England eighties. At 55, Christopher Golden has been nominated for the British Fantasy Award, the Eisner Award, and multiple Shirley Jackson Awards. He's been nominated for the prestigious Bram Stoker Award 10 times in eight different categories. He's won twice--once for Cut, his excellent edited collection of horror writers on horror film, and more recently for Ararat, his opening salvo in the riveting Ben Walker series. It's likely as not he'll win again--because, like his former podcast co-host Jonathan Maberry, his imagination is seemingly inexhaustible.Jake first encountered Golden's work in 1997, when his Hellboy novel, The Lost Army, was released by Dark Horse. He immediately recognized that there was at least one writer other than Mike Mignola who really knew how to write one of the great characters in comics. Dark Horse apparently realized it, too, and went on to publish two more of Golden's Hellboy novels. Golden and Mignola together expanded Hellboy's "Otherverse," introducing readers to Joe Golem and the Baltimores.A complete accounting of Golden's other work would require more time than we have. It would include a stint as a writer for Marvel's Punisher, a series of Buffy the Vampire Slayer tie-Ins, The Body of Evidence series, several series for young adult readers, and a slew of terrific standalone novels, including one of our favorites from last year, The Road of Bones (which you should run out and buy right now ... or after you listen to this interview). This year's All Hallows is set in the same fictional New England town as Golden's 2014 novel Snow Blind. We sat down to talk with Golden about All Hallows, which is releasing on January 24th.All Hallows by Christopher Goldenhttps://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250280299/allhallowsChristopher Golden Web Sitehttps://www.christophergolden.com/The Wrath of the iOtiansEmail: thewrathoftheiotians@gmail.comInstagram: thewrathoftheiotiansTwitter: @OfiOtiansLinktree: https://linktr.ee/wrathoftheiotianspodcastWebsite: https://thewrathoftheiotians.buzzsprout.com/MusicA Spooky Night by Material GurlLicensed under the Soundstripe Music License AgreementLand Of The Me-me by Aleksandar Dimitrijevic (TONO)Licensed under the NEO Sounds Music License Agreement

Ron chats with author Scott Leads about his remarkable debut novel, Schrader's Chord! It's a visceral story about cursed vinyl records that open a gateway to the land of the dead. After his estranged father's mysterious death, Charlie Remick returns to Seattle to help with the funeral. As the darkness descends, they are stalked by a relentless, malevolent force and see the dead everywhere they turn. With time running out, the only person who can help them is Charlie's resurrected father, who knows firsthand the awesome power the records have unleashed. Jake and Ron welcome Pura Belpré Award Winner and Bram Stoker Nominee Vincent Tirado, author of the fantastic horror novel We Don't Swim Here!Bronwyn is only supposed to be in rural Hillwoods for a year. Her grandmother is in hospice, and her father needs to get her affairs in order. And they're all meant to make some final memories together. Except Bronwyn is miserable. Her grandmother is dying, everyone is standoffish, and she can't even go swimming. All she hears are warnings about going in the water, despite a gorgeous lake. And a pool at the abandoned rec center. And another in the high school basement.Anais tries her hardest to protect Bronwyn from the shadows of Hillwoods. She follows her own rituals to avoid any unnecessary attention—and if she can just get Bronwyn to stop asking questions, she can protect her too. The less Bronwyn pays attention to Hillwoods, the less Hillwoods will pay attention to Bronwyn. She doesn't get that the lore is, well, truth. History. Pain. The 2023 Seattle International Film Festival was held on May 11-21. Ron was able to receive press credentials and had the opportunity to check out several short films and a few features. One of my favorite films at SIFF was the short horror film Let It Kill You directed by David Cornue and starring Adam Bucci and Adam Hess. The film tells the story of a disaffected American soldier asserts to his superiors that an enemy combatant is innocent, only to discover his new friend may be concealing a far more sinister secret. I was amazed by all aspects of this film: the directing, cinematography, acting, script, special effects (practical and CGI). Clearly, there is great focus and passion for this project. Emma Mieko Candon (she/they) is a bestselling queer author and escaped academic drawn to tales of devouring ghosts, cursed linguistics, and mediocre robots. Her work includes Star Wars: Ronin (2021), a Japanese reimagining of the Star Wars mythos, and the forthcoming The Archive Undying (2023), an original speculative novel about divine AIs, giant robots made of bone, and fraught queer romance in the post-post-apocalypse.As an actual cyborg whose blood has been taken for science, Emma's grateful to be stationed at home in Hawaii, where they were born and raised as a fourth-generation Japanese settler, and where they remain academically haunted by identity, ideology, and imperialism. At all hours of the day, they are beholden to the whims of two lopsided cats and relieved by the support of an enviably handsome wife. The 2023 Seattle International Film Festival was held on May 11-21. Ron was able to meet with Director Sarah Kambe Holland. Her debut feature film, Egghead & Twinkie, received much accolades at SIFF. It was one of the few films that were nominated for the prestigious New Cinema Competition Award and the Golden Space Needle Award (best film at SIFF). That's quite an achievement when you consider there were over 6000 films shown at SIFF 2023. Egghead & Twinkie is coming-of-age LGBTQ+ film of a recently out Asian American teen Twinkie and her nerdy best friend Egghead. Together, they set off on a 2,000-mile road trip to meet her online crush. It has all the tropes of a classic 80s teen movie. But its not an 80s reboot for Generation Z. Instead, it explores one person's story to comprehend cultural and sexual identity and learn the importance of unconditional love. And it's also a great comedy! Sarah has incredible creative vision and a sense for conveying emotional weight. She also directed a wonderful cast and managed a highly capable creative team. But make no mistake...this is Sarah's film. Not only was she the Director, but also the Writer, Producer and Editor. I believe Sarah is the best of her generation and we will see her directing major feature films in the future.Egghead & Twinkiehttps://eggheadandtwinkie.com/homeDirector/Writer/Producer/Editor Sarah Kambe HollandStarring Sabrina Jieafa, Louis Tomeo, Asahi HiranoIMDBhttps://www.imdb.com/title/tt13242416/fullcredits/?ref_=tt_cl_smSIFF 2023https://www.siff.net/festival/egghead-and-twinkieThe Wrath of the iOtiansEmail: thewrathoftheiotians@gmail.comInstagram: thewrathoftheiotiansTwitter: @OfiOtiansWebsite: https://thewrathoftheiotians.buzzsprout.com/MusicLand Of The Me-me by Aleksandar Dimitrijevic (TONO)Licensed under the NEO Sounds Music License Agreement
The 2023 Seattle International Film Festival was held on May 11-21. Ron was able to receive press credentials and had the opportunity to check out several short films and a few features. The 2023 Seattle International Film Festival was held on May 11-21. Ron was able to receive press credentials and had the opportunity to check out several short films and a few features. One of favorites was the short film From The Depths (directed by Justin Robert Vinall, and starring Giovanni Accettola, Allegra Sweeney, Rebecca Rose). It's about a couple seeking to rebuild their troubled relationship. They travel to a remote lakehouse, but a malevolent presence lurks beneath the water's surface. The acting, cinematography and sound design are hypnotic....creating a realistic and surrealistic atmosphere at the same time. One feels like they are experiencing a strange nightmare, but realizing they are fully awake. The 2023 Seattle International Film Festival was held on May 11-21. Ron was able to receive press credentials and had the opportunity to check out several short films and a few features. One of the films that was a stand-out was The Unusualist directed by Mike Simses and starring Matt Gourley. Mike not only directed the film, but was also the cinematographer, editor and composer of the score! Matt Gourely researched script ideas and improvised much of his dialogue. The Unusualist is a humorous and light-hearted take on the classic 1970s TV show In Search Of....with Leonard Nimoy as the host. We hope that it somehow finds a way to have a home at the SyFy Channel as a series!A huge thanks to the SIFF Press team (Amie, Dana, Madison, Victoria, Jesse and Jordan) for handling all the logistics and communications to setup this interview! They even booked a Press Suite at the Grand Hyatt Seattle for Mike and myself! Thank you! Post interview corrections from Mike Simses: The Unusualist monologues (incuding th one heard in this episode) were written, rather than improvised, by Mike Simses. The dialogue was among the post production elements written by Mike (e.g. the re-enactments in the film).Other corrections: It's the EMS Synthi, not OMS; and the DX7 came out in ‘83, not ‘84.The 2023 Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF)https://www.siff.net/festivalThe Unusualist (2023)https://www.imdb.com/title/tt27663106/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1https://www.siff.net/festival/the-unusualistMichael Simseshttps://www.imdb.com/name/nm3205976/?ref_=fn_al_nm_2https://www.instagram.com/mikesimses/Matt Gourleyhttps://www.mattgourley.comhttps://www.imdb.com/name/nm13713693/?ref_=tt_cl_i_4Moxie Pictureshttps://moxiepictures.com/In Search Of....(TV series 1977-1982)https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074007/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1During the interview Mike Simses references "Rinder and Lewis" who are the composers of the famous (or infamous!) Jake and Ron welcome legendary author Christopher Paolini!Even if you don't read genre fiction, you're likely to remember the story of the young man who at the age of nineteen became a New York Times bestselling author when his first book Eragonwas republished by Knopf in 2003, after a self-published debut and a grassroots marketing campaign the previous year. Paolini would go on to produce three more novels and a short story collection tied to his Inheritance Cycle, with another, Murtagh, due this coming November.Since 2002, Paolini has enthralled tens of millions of readers. And while the Inheritance Cycle is published as Young Adult fiction by Knopf, it is enjoyed by readers of all ages. This rabid fan base has earned him a citation in the Guinness Book of World Records as the youngest author of a bestselling series. In 2020 Tor published Paolini's first science fiction novel, To Sleep in a Sea of Stars, launching the Fractalverse series to much critical acclaim, including a GoodRead's Best Science Fiction Award for the year. A follow-up was published online in 2021 as Unity, and you can read it on fractal verse.net free of charge. The journey is interactive in a mode old people like us used to call hyper-fiction. Not content with publishing one novel in 2023, Paolini this month brings us Fractal Noise, a prequel novel written for adults that we dare say is of a philosophical bent. We mean this as the highest praise: Fractal Noise is thoughtful and thought-provoking, exploring themes of the nature of human suffering and its possible antidotes, loss and grief, and human endurance. That it does so with a gripping narrative suffused with an abiding sense of dread is a testament to Paolini's ever-growing skills as an author, and Fractal Noise is amongst our favorite novels of the iOtians's current interview season. We spoke with Paolini at his home in Montana and found him to be no less fascinating in person than he is on the page.Christopher Paolinihttps://www.paolini.net/Christopher Paolini Workshttps://www.paolini.net/works/Fractal Noise (2023)https://www.paolini.net/works/fractal-noise/https://www.tor.com/tag/fractal-noise/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/christopher_paolini/Twitter: https://twitter.com/paoliniThe Wrath of the iOtiansEmail: thewrathoftheiotians@gmail.comInstagram: thewrathoftheiotiansTwitter: @OfiOtiansWebsite: https://thewrathoftheiotians.buzzsprout.com/MusicLand Of The Me-me by Aleksandar Dimitrijevic (TONO)Licensed under the NEO Sound
Jake and Ron are so thrilled to have New York Times bestselling author Kayla Cottingham on the Wrath of the iOtians! As a result, humanity slowly began to return to normal.Cut to Zoey, Celeste, Valeria, and Jasmine, four hollow girls living in Southern California. As a last hurrah before graduation they decide to attend a musical festival in the heart of the desert. They have a cooler filled with seltzer, vodka, and Synflesh… and are ready to party. But on the first night of the festival Val goes feral and ends up killing and eating a boy in one of the bands. Jake and Ron welcome back to the podcast Edward Ashton, author of the just-released Antimatter Blues, which is a sequel to Mickey 7 and published by St. Martin's Press. As most of you already know, Mickey 7 is being developed into a movie directed by Oscar-winning director of Parasite, Bong Joon-ho. He is also writing the screenplay. The title role is being portrayed by the highly versatile actor Robert Pattinson. The movie's release date is scheduled for March, 2024. The movie itself will be called Mickey 17. Mickey 7 was one of our favorite sci-fi books of last year. Last year, NPR called it one of the best books of 2022. Mickey 7 received high praise from two of our favorite authors. Jonathan Mayberry called it "Mind-bending and powerful. This is why we read science fiction." Jason Pargin called it "Unique and thought-provoking." We were so excited to chat with Edward again and to learn about the creative process for Antimatter Blues. Definitely a worthy sequel to Mickey 7! As most of the Wrath of the iOtians listeners/subscribers know Ron lives in the town of Snoqualmie where Twin Peaks (Seasons1, 2 Fire Walk with Me and The Return) was filmed! In the pat two years Snoqualmie has celebrated February 24 (the day Agent Dale Cooper arrived) as Twin Peaks day. This year there were so many great events. Ron finally got to meet Managing Editor of The Blue Rose magazine and author Scott Ryan, and authors/podcasters John Thorne and JB Minton!Ron was able to check out the panels at Black Dog Cafe in Snoqualmie.Production Notes: Although a Shure MV88 was used to capture the panels the audio is by no means perfect. Digital processing was added to reduce typical sounds heard in a café setting. Jake and Ron chat with New York Times bestseller and 2-Time Bram Stoker Award winner about his latest novel, All Hallows! The book is set in 1984 in Massachusetts. Since Jake and Christopher both live near the Boston area they end up talking not only about All Hallows, but about common experiences they had as horror fans growing up in the New England eighties. At 55, Christopher Golden has been nominated for the British Fantasy Award, the Eisner Award, and multiple Shirley Jackson Awards. He's been nominated for the prestigious Bram Stoker Award 10 times in eight different categories. He's won twice, once for Cut his excellent edited collection of horror writers on horror. And more recently for Aarat, his opening salvo in the riveting Ben Walker series. It's likely as not he'll win again because like his former podcast co-host Jonathan Maberry, his imagination is seemingly inexhaustible.I first encountered his work in 1997. When his Hellboy novel, The Lost Army, was released by Dark Horse and immediately recognized that there was at least one writer other than Mike Mignola, who really knew how to write one of the great characters in comics. Dark Horse apparently realized it too, and went on to publish two more of Golden's Hellboy novels.Golden and Mignola together expanded Hellboy's Otherverse, introducing readers to Joe Golem and The Baltimores .A complete accounting of Golden's other work would require more time than we have. It would include ab stint as writer for Marvel's Punisher, a series of Buffy the Vampire Slayer Tie-Ins.The Body of Evidence series, several series for young adult readers, and a slew of terrific standalone novels, including one of our favorites from last year, The Road of Bones, which you should go by right now or after you listen to this interview. This year's All Halls is set in the same fictional New England town as Golden's 2014 novel Snow Blind. We sat down to talk with Golden about his latest book, All Hallows, which is releasing on January 24th.All Hallows by Christopher Goldenhttps://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250280299/allhallowsChristopher Golden Web Sitehttps://www.christophergolden.com/The Wrath of the iOtiansEmail: thewrathoftheiotians@gmail.comInstagram: thewrathoftheiotiansTwitter: @OfiOtiansWebsite: https://thewrathoftheiotians.buzzsprout.com/MusicLand Of The Me-me by Aleksandar Dimitrijevic (TONO)Licensed under the NEO Sounds Music License Agreement

Ymir by Rich Larson, was one of our favorite science fiction books we read in the summer of 2022. Locus Magazine wrote glowingly of Rich: "If one tried to engineer a young writer who would embody all the core values, tactics, and ambiance of Classic SF while still conveying ultra-contemporary attitudes, ambiance, and affect, one could hardly produce a better candidate than Rich Larson"Rich was born in Niger and has lived in Grand Prairie, Alberta in Canada, Spain and the Czech Republic. Rich considers himself to be a speculative fiction author. He has written over 200 short stories and 2 novels Ymir and Annex, as well as the collection Tomorrow Factory. His short story “Ice” was adapted into an Emmy-winning episode of LOVE DEATH + ROBOTS (available on Netflix).Ymir (published by Orbit Books) is imaginative and compelling. It's a far future story of a despised prodigal returning to his icy home world of Ymir to track down a sapient war machine, break a mining strike and to confront the last person he ever wanted to see again—the brother who sent him off in pieces twenty years ago. By the way, when you check out the marketing it calls the novel a "retelling of Beowulf". Rich told us prior to recording that his publisher asked him what his next novel will be and he quickly replied "Beowulf in space" and it stuck with them. There is absolutely no need to read or refresh yourself on Beowulf. Well, just remember that Grendel is a monster (Also a terrific novel by John Gardner and an excellent restaurant and bar in Cambridge, MA!)And for those who don't want to jump into a new series, Ymir is a stand-alone novel. We think it will make a breathtaking film one day. Happy New Year! Since Jake is currently on holiday the iOtians decided to replay one of their most downloaded episodes of 2022, their interview with Edward Ashton, Author of Mickey 7. This episode marked a turning point for the Wrath of the iOtians podcast. Due to an incredibly high number of downloads it increased the podcast's audience and visibility. It was also just a fun interview to do!Note: This episode has been remixed to increase clarity and vocal presence. The iOtians have a lot planned for Season 3 starting in January 2023! It kicks off with 2 Bram Stoker Award winning authors. Interview with Edward Ashton, author of Mickey 7 (April 2022) The sequel, Antimatter Blues, is now available! Details on http://www.edwardashton.com/Mickey 17, the film adaptation of Mickey 7 will be in theaters on March 29, 2024Directed by Bong Joon Ho, Screenplay by Bong Joon Ho and starring Robert Pattinson. Check out the official trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCvK270F_IE&ab_channel=WarnerBros.PicturesIf you follow movie news and development then you've already heard of the sci-fi novel Mickey7. In 2020, Plan B, Brad Pitt's production company, acquired the film rights to the tale. Earlier this year, it was announced that Oscar-winning director Bong Joon Ho selected Mickey7 to be his next project, with Robert Pattinson attached to star in the titular role. And this all happened before the novel was even published. Mickey7 Edward Ashton's first science-fiction novel, and it was published by St. Martin's Press in February 2022.Edward's background researching cancer and teaching grad-school quantum physics may lead would-be readers to suspect that Mickey7 is abstract and esoteric. Instead, the novel has fast-paced action with life-and-death consequences. Yes, you'll learn about science (often from Mickey7 himself), but it's always in the context of story. Ideas of immortality and identity are also explored in thought-provoking ways. We had the great fortune to talk with Edward Ashton about Mickey7 in detail. Jake and Ron chat with British Fantasy Awards Finalist Rym Kechacha, author of To Catch a Moon, published by Unsung Stories. She is a writer and teacher living in Norwich, England. Her debut novel, Dark River, was nominated for two British Fantasy Awards. To Catch a Moon is influenced by the surrealist paintings of Remedios Varo. Rym Kechacha spins a wild fantasy from Varo's dreamlike imaginings, a world in which the moon's daughter holds the key to mankind's fate. Populated by witches, sentient animals, and a lion made of leaves, To Catch a Moon is a bold and fearless ode to the power of Remedios Varo's timeless paintings. Have you ever wondered why certain movies scare you more than others? Why do some movies scare you, even years later and after repeat viewing? Why do certain sounds make you feel uneasy? How do horror movies reflect our own history? Nightmare Fuel answers these questions and many more! Nina explores our fears through the lenses of biology, psychology, and physiology in a very comprehensive process. And Nina also watched 274 horror films for research--that's right 274! But Nightmare Fuel is not some dry textbook; it's so entertaining and humorous to read! That's because Nina also works as a science communicator at Science North in Sudbury, Ontario developing content for exhibits, workshops, and programming for school groups and public audiences in English and French. With Halloween around the corner, this is a great book for your resident horror movie fan, for your Halloween party (like we said ... so fun to read!), but also for everyone else who wants to understand that unique, visceral, sometimes paralyzing emotion that impacted our ancient ancestors so much that it became bio-coded in all of us ... the emotion of fear.Nightmare Fuel: The Science of Horror Films by Nina Nessethhttps://tornightfire.com/catalog/nightmare-fuel-the-science-of-horror-films-nina-nesseth/The Science of Black Orphan: The Official Companion by Casey Griffin and Nina Nessethhttps://ecwpress.com/products/science-of-orphan-blackNina Nessethhttps://www.ninanesseth.com/Social MediaInstagram: cestmabiologieTwitter: @cestmabiologieThe Wrath of the iOtiansEmail: thewrathoftheiotians@gmail.comInstagram: thewrathoftheiotiansTwitter: @OfiOtiansWebsite: https://thewrathoftheiotians.buzzsprout.com/MusicLand Of The Me-me by Aleksandar Dimitrijevic (TONO)Licensed under the NEO Sounds Music License Agreement
We're celebrating episode 50 with author and fantastic human being Jonathan Maberry! Jonathan Maberry doesn't have time to talk to us. He's writing another novel. He's editing Weird Tales Magazine. He's brokering a deal with an agent, copyediting a manuscript with his assistant, coordinating a speaking engagement with his publicist, or prepping a session of his Writers Coffeehouse for aspiring authors. He's probably in the process of winning another Bram Stoker award--he only has five, after all. He's scripting a comic for Marvel or IDW. He's pre-screening a pilot based on one of his series.Jonathan Maberry doesn't have time to talk to us. But he does anyway. In fact, he's got a bookstore appearance coming up in a couple of hours, but he stays on the call past the hour mark to regale us with a tale of how he met Ray Bradbury. He's met all your heroes--Stan Lee, Lin Carter, Stephen King, Michael Moorcock, Harlan Ellison, Lance Henrickson, and on and on--and they're his heroes, too. But he also tells us about his beloved grandmother, a very special hero in his own story. He tells us why he's generous with his ideas. He's kind to people he's never heard of, like us. He has good advice. He has infinite delight in his craft. Jonathan Maberry is a legend in our world. If you love Black Panther or Wolverine or Captain America, you know his work. You may be a fan of his Joe Ledger thriller series, or have a son or daughter reading his Nightsiders books. Maybe you caught V-Wars on Netflix because you loved the comic. Or the Pine Deep novels bring you back to your own hometown's sinister past. You know Jonathan Maberry's Rot & Ruin books if you love zombies. He's penned novels based on the immensely popular Deadlands RPG. He's edited X-Files and Aliens anthologies. He even wrote a jujitsu instruction manual or two, before he started producing fiction in his mid-40s. And he just squeezed his first epic fantasy novel into a thoroughly overloaded schedule--Kagen the Damned, which came out with St. Martin's Griffin this May. The sequel, the Son of the Poisoned Rose, is already on tap for January of next year.We could keep going, probably all day, but there's an interview to get to. Because in spite of all Jonathan Maberry has on his plate, he made the time, and we couldn't be more grateful for it. A deep exploration of love and loss and what happens when the world ends but you're too stubborn or stupid to end with it.THE 22 MURDERS OF MADISON MAY, by Max Barry. A police procedural that tripped and fell through a manhole into the multiverse. And also the Futurama reboot. I don't have super high expectations for this one, but I know I'm gonna watch it anyway.Sylvain NeuvelBooks: Face by Joma West comes out in a month or two. My favorite read in a while. The Violence, by Delilah Dawson is pretty recent and awesome.TV. New season of For All Mankind coming to Apple TV. That show's a must for anyone who likes Take Them To the Stars. Also, I think Strange New Worlds is the best trek yetJuliette WadeI'm hoping to read August Kitko and the Mechas from Space by Alex White, Saint Death's Daughter by C.S.E. Cooney, and Comeuppance Served Cold by Marion Deeds.Neil SharpsonHi gents! At the moment I'm reading Trilby Black's excellent "Finnegan's Awake", a YA novel about a teenage girl who believes she's been raised to single handedly fight the War on Terror. I'm trying to read more Irish language stuff so I'm gearing up to tackle "Cluiche na Corónach" which is the translation of "Game of Thrones" (wish me luck). The rest of my TBR pile consists of Lies of Descent by Troy Carroll Butcher and Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlman. I'd recommend The Third Policeman by Flann O'Brian, one of the funniest science fiction books ever written.Marina LostetterI'm looking forward to reading Our Lady of Mysterious Ailments (book 2 in the Edinburgh Nights series) by T.L. Huchu, What Moves the Dead by T. Jake and Ron interview one of the most exciting science fiction novelists in recent years, Samit Basu, author of The City Inside published by TorDotCom!Samit Basu is a prolific veteran of fantasy and science fiction novels. He's also quite versatile, with work ranging from the bestselling Gamewold trilogy to YA titles such as The Adventures of Stoob, Terror on the Titanic, and even comic books. He has written columns and essays for several leading Indian and international publications. On top of that, Samit is also a screenwriter and director. He co-directed the film House Arrest, which was part of the Netflix International Originals program in 2019. His UK/US crossover occurred with the superhero novels Turbulence and its sequel, Resistance, published by Titan Books. Said Wired Magazine of Turbulence, "... it has it all. Solid writing, great character development, humor, personal loss, and excellent points to ponder in every chapter" Turbulence won the Wired Goldenbot Award. His latest novel The City Inside, published by TordotCom, tells the story of Joey, a "Reality Controller" in near-future Delhi. Her job is to supervise the multimedia multi-reality livestreams of Indi, one of South Asia's fastest-rising online celebrities. It turns out some of those live streams are manufactured to your tastes and desires. Popularity, views, and likes are now part of the sophisticated disinformation machine. To make matters worse, Joey and her friends live in an outright surveillance state. Understanding where cameras are located and being careful about what they say are in the forefront of their minds. To survive in near-future Delhi, one needs to constantly play defense and be on alert. The City Inside reads not as a dystopia, but rather as a forecast for tomorrow. Samit's education at the University of Westminster, London in broadcast and documentary film-making lends itself to the immediacy felt when reading this book. Despite the extraordinary circumstances the characters live under, there is a sense of hope and humor throughout the book. Samit prepares to write a novel by immersing himself in research. Now, you would think that someone who spent a multitude of hours researching potential issues for the human race would be quite dour, but he was very affable and we absolutely enjoyed our conversation with him. As you'll see, he's very thoughtful during the interview. Although he lives in Delhi, India, Samit was kind enough to interview while he was on vacation. We reached him in Berlin, Germany.Samit Basu LinksThe City Inside by Samit Basu (2022)https://publishing.tor.com/thecityinside-samitbasu/9781250827487/Samit Basu Official Web Site: https://samitbasu.com/Twitter: https://twitter.com/samitbasuInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/samitbasu/Samit Basu interviews author Bruce Sterling: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=samit+basu+bruce+sterlingThe Wrath of the iOtiansEmail: thewrathoftheiotians@gmail.comInstagram: thewrathoftheiotiansTwitter: @OfiOtiansWebsite: The Lowest DeepA supernatural horror fiction series.Listen on: Spotify

Jake and Ron chat with the award-winning poet and author Sarah Tolmie about her novella All the Horses of IcelandSarah Tolmie, the author of All of the Horses in Iceland, can be described in many ways:Intelligent: She is a trained medievalist with advanced degrees from University of Toronto and Cambridge and is a professor at the University of Waterloo.Versatile: Sarah is a published poet and author of short stories, novels, and novellas. Unique: Her body of work is not easily classified. Resilient: As a mom to a new baby and toddler, and a professor working diligently for tenure, Sarah wrote her novel, The Stone Boatmen, while riding on a bus during her long commute to and from work.Inspiring: The Stone Boatmen was passed over by publishers for close to two years. As you'll hear in this interview, Sarah decided to take incredible, proactive steps on her own, and soon afterward, she was a published writer. All struggling, unpublished writers should listen to Sarah tell this story.I don't think it's a coincidence that these are the same characteristics for Icelandic Horses. Enjoy our discussion with Sarah about All the Horses of Iceland. We spoke to Sarah at her home in Kitchener, Ontario in Canada. Jake and Ron chat with the acclaimed author Juliette Wade about her projected 5 book series, The Broken Trust.Juliette Wade is a novelist ... and after listening to this interview, you'll understand why it's a hard-earned and well-deserved title for this masterclass worldbuilder. Her background is impressive. She is fluent in French and Japanese, has degrees in linguistics and anthropology, and also boasts a Ph.D. in education.Juliette started writing fiction in 1999, and her short stories have been featured in Analog, Clarkesworld, and Fantasy & Science Fiction magazines. But she is perhaps best known for her projected five-volume Broken Trust series, whose latest volume, Inheritors of Power, was published earlier this year by DAW. Juliette's specialty is sociological science-fiction, of which Broken Trust is one of our finest contemporary examples. Each stratum of Broken Trust's complex caste system has its own vocation, ideals, manners, and culture, and naturally, they come into a devastating conflict. There's a lot to discuss, so let's dive in!Juliette Wade website: https://juliettewade.com/Dive Into World Building: http://dive-into-worldbuilding.blogspot.com/Juliette Wade YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/c/JulietteWadeThe Broken Trust Series: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/series/4BT/the-broken-trustMazes of Power (Book 1): https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/607290/mazes-of-power-by-juliette-wade/Transgressions of Power (Book 2) https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/607291/transgressions-of-power-by-juliette-wade/Inheritors of Power (Book 3)https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/673094/inheritors-of-power-by-juliette-wade/The Wrath of the iOtiansEmail: thewrathoftheiotians@gmail.comInstagram: thewrathoftheiotiansTwitter: @OfiOtiansWebsite: https://thewrathoftheiotians.buzzsprout.com/MusicLand Of The Me-me by Aleksandar Dimitrijevic (TONO)Licensed under the NEO Sounds Music License AgreementThe Lowest DeepA supernatural horror fiction series.Listen on: Spotify

The iOtians chat about the Severance and From on EPIX finales! The Severance finale was nail-biting and heart-stopping! What an incredible season of TV; from the directing and set design to the casting, acting, and writing. We don't ever want to be severed, but we love Severance! :) We can't wait for season 2!Candidly, we were disappointed in the From on EPIX finale. We felt like it borrowed heavily from the Lost playbook (the mysterious hatch--er, lighthouse; the "Other's" voice on the radio; the boat at the end of season 1 of Lost that was transmogrified into a radio tower). We didn't learn anything new about those smiley vampire people. Most importantly ... what happened to the horror?! Did Victor hide it somewhere? All this said, at the end of the day, we thought From on EPIX was generally incredible, and we'll still tune in for season 2—presuming there is a season 2. (We're looking at you Amazon Prime!)Jake has some book recommendations, and Ron has been watching Slow Horses on Apple TV+.Finally, big thanks to a guy named Burt!
