Cheap storage and fast Internet have made data collection cheap and fast. It is no wonder that we have federal agencies that are drowning in data. Some will argue that the federal government is the largest collector of data in the world. That may be a fantastic fun fact that will dazzle your neighbors, but how is that data being used to move forward the goals of the agency? Today, we sat down with Jason Green from Virtru. He brings his considerable experience to bear when he describes how agencies can optimize that data. He provides his thoughts on digital strategy, collaboration, and safeguarding that data. STRATEGY During the interview, Jason makes a sage observation. He remarks that when looking at the overview of digital transformation strategy, the focus has been on applications and not the data itself. AI will be making increasing inroads around decision-making and serious decisions cannot be derived from dirty data. COLLOBORAGE – When a data analyst is limited to one data set their conclusions can be biased. The need for collaboration is obvious. The “how” is the tricky part. Jason suggests that more careful attention be paid to tagging data so that some fields can be shared and some not. SAFEGUARDING – Years ago, data was guarded with hashing techniques. In today's fast-changing world, mere hashing is not sufficient. Data stores can be injected with poison data; this means continuous monitoring must be stretched into the data stores themselves. If you would like to learn more about managing data, you may want to attend “DMV Rising” a networking event at Virtru headquarters in Washington DC on September 5, 2024. You will be able to sit in on sessions as well as ask face-to-face questions for subject matter experts. = = = www.podscorecard.com Connect to John Gilroy on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-gilroy/ Got goin' to Mars on your bucket list? In today's world, conventional cyber thinking remains largely focused on perimeter-centric security controls designed to govern how identities and endpoints utilize networks to access applications and data that organizations possess internally. Against this backdrop, a group of innovators and security thought leaders are exploring a new frontier and asking the question: shouldn't there be a standard way to protect sensitive data regardless of where it resides or who it's been shared with? It's called “data-centric” security and it's fundamentally different from “perimeter-centric” security models. Practicing it at scale requires a standard way to extend the value of “upstream” data governance (discovery, classification, tagging) into “downstream” collaborative workflows like email, file sharing, and SaaS apps. In this episode of CyberWire-X, the CyberWire's Rick Howard and Dave Bittner explore modern approaches for applying and enforcing policy and access controls to sensitive data which inevitably leaves your possession but still deserves just as much security as the data that you possess internally. Rick and Dave are joined by guests Bill Newhouse, Cybersecurity Engineer at National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE), and Dana Morris, Senior Vice President for Product and Engineering of our episode sponsor Virtru.

Period and ovulation trackers have been around for quite a while but they are not, for the most part, privacy forward. In fact, according to the Mozilla foundation, only a few even have privacy policies. That is problematic for women in states that are criminalizing abortion where they are subpoenaing records of women even searching for options. Virtru, a security software company decided to fix that problem at and Def Con 2022 the demonstrated a concept app that put complete control of access to the data in the hands of the user. In preparation for Women's Equality Day on August 26, we talked with the team leader that developed the app, Cassandra Bailey, and the senior vice president of product strategy, Rob McDonald about the process. No, More. We talk about data privacy in today's segment. Can we get beyond the discussion of GDPR? Ask a CISO On a previous episode we talked about the meager adoption of multi-factor authentication. We concluded that it was still too complicated to use. So what's encryption's excuse? Why isn't encryption available and used by all? How does the security paradigm change if everyone is sending encrypted messages?

CISO/Security Vendor Relationship Podcast and Series has moved to CISOSeries.com. Why is our financial institution sending us an email suggesting we click on a link to log into our account? On this episode of the CISO/Security Vendor Relationship Podcast we educate your customers and your marketing department about suspicious looking emails. This show, like all the previous ones is hosted by me, David Spark (@dspark), founder of Spark Media Solutions and Mike Johnson, CISO of Lyft. Our guest this week is Chenxi Wang, managing general partner, Rain Capital. Special thanks to Virtru for sponsoring this episode. As a reader, I know you’re always worried about your data. That’s why Virtru is providing a free copy of Forrester’s 14-page report on the Future of Data Security and Privacy to readers for a limited time. Click here to grab your copy while it’s still available. On this episode Why is everybody talking about this now? While many security professionals' eyes roll when they hear the word "blockchain," it is currently the second most popular area of security research, according to IDG. What is it about blockchain that VCs and security professionals find so attractive? Question for the board What responsibility does the board bear for educating the C-suite about cybersecurity competency? PwC put together a great list of questions the board should be asking regarding cybersecurity competency. It's time to play "What's Worse?!" There's a visual attached to this game. Go ahead and look here and tune in to hear the question. What's a CISO to do? Our guest, Chenxi Wang, provided some excellent advice for startups on getting on the diversity train early on. If you don't, you'll find it's incredibly hard to build in diversity with an established and non-diverse team. And now this... How do VCs play a crucial role in the relationship between buyers and sellers of security products?

Recent concerns about government surveillance have focused attention on secure communication tools for the masses. The security properties of these tools receive more attention than their usability properties. This talk will cover our recent effort to design a usable secure webmail system. We have conducted a number of studies to analyze existing tools and our own systems to determine whether these tools are usable by the masses to communicate securely. Most recently, to determine whether secure email is ready for grassroots adoption, we conducted a laboratory user study that recruits pairs of novice users to install and use several of the latest systems to exchange secure messages. We will discuss both quantitative and qualitative results from 25 pairs of novice users as they use Pwm, Tutanota, and Virtru. Participants report being more at ease with this type of study and better able to cope with mistakes since both participants are "on the same page". We find that users prefer integrated solutions over depot-based solutions, and that tutorials are important in helping first-time users. Hiding the details of how a secure email system provides security can lead to a lack of trust in the system. Participants expressed a desire to use secure email, but few wanted to use it regularly and most were unsure of when they might use it. About the speaker: Dr. Kent Seamons is the Director of the Internet Security Research Lab in the Computer Science Department at BYU. His research interests are in usable security, privacy, authentication, identity management, and trust management. He received a PhD in Computer Science from Illinois. Prior to joining the faculty at BYU, he conducted research at the IBM Pittsburgh Lab where he was a co-inventor of trust negotiation. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed papers that have been cited over 4,300 times. Dr. Seamons has been awarded nearly $5 million in funding from NSF, DARPA, NASA, and industry. He is also a co-inventor on four patents in the areas of automated trust negotiation, single sign-on, and security overlays.
