For this week's Tech Takeover, Jess Kelly, Newstalk's Technology Correspondent joins Shane to discuss Instagram's decision to scrap end-to-end encryption with its private message service…
Google Maps is getting a new look Google Maps is getting it's biggest update in over a decade with the launch of “Immersive Navigation”. The new view places you in a 3D space with a view of the road features, buildings and terrain around you – almost making it look like a video game. It has smart zooms and transparent buildings to give you a better look at what's coming up on your drive, including potentially tricky merges and turns, and better highlighting of things like traffic lights and pedestrian crossings. It starts in the US, and will roll out to iOS and Android devices, and CarPlay and Android Auto. A surprise reversal from Meta – Instagram chats will no longer be encrypted From May 8th, chats will no longer be encrypted. You'll have until then to download them, or I assume they'll be deleted by Meta. Meta's decision to dismantle the encryption feature comes against the backdrop of increasing concerns surrounding child sexual abuse material (CSAM) online. By eliminating end-to-end encryption, the company will be able to monitor direct messages and calls on Instagram for any content relating to CSAM, grooming, or related harassment. There are lots of open questions and I'm surprised this hasn't been picked up by more outlets. What was behind the move? Are laws such as the EU's Chat Control regulation and the UK's Online Safety Act 2023 pushing them away from E2E encryption? Messenger just got E2E encryption – so what happens to that now? WhatsApp has had it for some time, and is a core feature of the product – will that also go? Could this be to do with how the services are classified under various international laws? Some odd things are happening at Meta. They are bringing Messenger back inside Facebook, effectively killing it as a standalone product and having more like the FB Messages of old. In this Bible study with Rev. Roland Anang, we explore a powerful kingdom mystery: truth is spiritually encrypted—and only the Spirit can decode it. Just as end-to-end encryption protects messages from third parties, the Word of God is spirit-to-spirit communication. Without the Holy Spirit, Scripture becomes mere literature, preaching becomes poetry, and church becomes routine. Drawing from scriptures like Zechariah, John, Daniel, Acts, Romans, and Revelation, this message unveils why many hear sermons but are not transformed. The difference is not intelligence, eloquence, or grammar—it is spiritual activation. The Spirit empowers both the preacher to encode truth and the believer to decode it. When revelation comes, change is immediate. When revelation is absent, we remain informed but unchanged. This episode is a call to tune your spiritual antenna, lay aside pride and cultural filters, and receive the engrafted Word with meekness—so you can truly hear what the Spirit is saying.
You would think that for such an important concept as end-to-end encryption there's be some agreement on exactly what it means. Sadly, not so. There's the correct definition, and then there's the marketing definition. One protects you, the other not so much.
In late April 2024, police chiefs from the UK's National Crime Agency and 32 European countries issued a statement expressing their concerns about the use of end-to-end encryption by instant messaging services like WhatsApp. The statement recognised that E2E encryption protects users' personal data, but emphasised that it also prevents authorities from identifying suspicious or illegal activities. And, as we'll get to in just a moment, encryption doesn't always guarantee full privacy for users. What does "end-to-end encryption" actually mean in concrete terms? Does that mean all my data is protected when I send a message then? What's the best way to stay safe and secure then? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! To listen to the last episodes, you can click here: Could gamophobia be hurting your relationship? How do I know when to end a friendship? How often should I wash my hair? In response to the compromise of telecommunication companies by the Chinese hacker group Salt Typhoon, senior officials from the FBI and CISA recommended that American citizens use encrypted messaging apps to minimize the chances of their communications being intercepted. This marks a departure in law enforcement's position on the use of encrypted communications. Susan Landau, Professor of Cyber Security and Policy in Computer Science at Tufts University, and Alan Rozenshtein, Associate Professor of Law at the University of Minnesota Law School and Research Director and Senior Editor at Lawfare, sat down with Lawfare Senior Editor Eugenia Lostri to talk about what the recent FBI recommendation in favor of the use of encrypted messaging apps means for the “Going Dark” debate. #230: In today's digital age, it's no secret that relying solely on passwords for security is no longer an effective solution. We all understand the risks associated with using just passwords, but the question remains: what other alternatives do we have at our disposal? What if you could eliminate passwords all together and still make all your communications completely secure? In this episode, we speak with Mike Malone, Founder and CEO at Smallstep, about his background with OpenID and OAuth and how increasing security today doesn't mean also increasing budgets. Last week, Apple made an announcement about some new security features it would be offering to users. One of those features involves users' ability to opt in to encryption for iPhone backups to iCloud. While this new feature will enhance data privacy and security for those users who choose to opt in, it may create additional challenges for law enforcement to obtain evidence in criminal investigations. To discuss the implications and potential impact of this new security feature, Lawfare senior editor Stephanie Pell sat down with Riana Pfefferkorn, research scholar at the Stanford Internet Observatory.
