Alexis Hejna and Mark Radulich present their Vote Loki 2016 Review! Vote Loki is a four-part comic book series published by Marvel Comics from June 2016 to August 2016 as a satire about the 2016 United States presidential election. Written by comic book creator Christopher Hastings, the series is centered around Norse god Loki Laufeyson's controversial political campaign for President of the United States and fictional reporter Nisa Contreras's attempt to prove his duplicity. When Loki's unconventional campaign — centered on the fact that he would have "the guts" to lie outright to the American people, as opposed to the majority of politicians who would just lie — takes off with a surprising amount of support, only Nisa Contreras, young journalist for the Daily Bugle, seems to be undeceived by this promise for change. The tagline for the series is "BeLIEve", playing on one of the central themes of the issues, deception. Elements of the series were adapted into the fifth episode of the Disney+ streaming television miniseries Loki, set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We talk about Loki's Journey Into Mystery and the things you missed if you never read the comics. Learn about the Alioth, He Who Remains, Congress of Realities, and more! Talk with us on Twitter. Links from the discussion… The silly story of the Thanos helicopter. Loki did refer to himself as the God of Outcasts in the comics just like the variant Lokis did in this episode. Alioth exists across divergent timelines and consumes everything it touches. He Who Remains is the final leader of the TVA in the comics and he has a castle. The Congress of Realities exists across timelines and has representatives from trillions of them. The sword that Kid Loki gives to Loki looks like Gram. Vote Loki is the issue where the President Loki variant comes from. Gizmodo has an interesting article on Loki's transition from Norse mythology to Marvel comics.
The latest episode of Loki is also the penultimate episode of the (assumed) first season of the show, and it set us up for either the world's best finale… or the world's biggest letdown. I'm choosing to be optimistic because there are certainly a number of avenues down which Kevin Feige and crew can go. Let's back up… we first have to discuss VOTE LOKI, Alligator Loki's nexus event, Boastful Loki's miraculous accomplishments, and everything else that made up that fifth episode. This is a solo episode! Loki Laufeyson is a lot of things, but could he rule the free world? That's the premise of the 2016 4-issue miniseries "Vote Loki", which was written by Christopher Hastings for Marvel Comics. A loose commentary on the dumpster fire that was the 2016 Presidential Election, "Vote Loki" serves as both a cautionary tale AND a self-fulfilling prophecy, as it examines what happens when political candidates become cults of personality. Could Loki's lying ways lead him to the most powerful seat in America? Join us, and find out! Please leave us a review on ITunes so we can grow our audience and grow as podcasters! I'm back and talking about VOTE LOKI (2016), for better or for worse. Hear all my excellent opinions on this comic, about what we can expect in the upcoming Loki TV show, and also why you should listen to Thor: Metal Gods today. Happy New Year!
Comic book writer Christopher Hastings (Deadpool, I Am Groot, Vote Loki) and comedian Chrissie Gruebel (UCB's Maude Night, Reductress, Funny or Die) throw back a few drinks and talk about the beloved classic, ELEKTRA. Honestly, we didn't think it was that bad. Don't get us wrong, we wouldn't recommend it to anyone, but it's not the worst thing to look at for two hours. Cover art by Glossy & Odd. Our theme song is "Nobody Loves the Hulk" by The Traits.
Comic book writer Christopher Hastings (Deadpool, I Am Groot, Vote Loki) and comedian Chrissie Gruebel (UCB's Maude Night, Reductress, Funny or Die) throw a few drinks back and talk about the nightmare of boredom that is Ang Lee's HULK. We make our second "Heathcliffe the cat loves to eat bones" joke of the series. Chrissie repeatedly brings up the gamma irradiated monster dog that gets hit in the uh oh zone. We talk about Steven King's On Writing, Beyonce's attention to detail, and generally find any excuse we can to talk about anything other than this movie which we hated. Cover art by Glossy & Odd. Our theme song is "Nobody Loves the Hulk" by The Traits.
Comic book writer Christopher Hastings (Deadpool, I Am Groot, Vote Loki) and comedian Chrissie Gruebel (UCB's Maude Night, Reductress, Funny or Die) throw a few drinks back and talk about the movie that spawned the idea for the podcast in the first place, CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR. Chrissie lays out her "Too Many Iron Mans" theory, Chris explains "Stucky", and everyone agrees that Vision looks incredible in his sweaters. Chris MADE UP a cocktail to go with this movie, but now that we are releasing the episode months later, we can't find the recipe. But we also haven't made it again in that time, so it couldn't have been THAT good. Cover art by Glossy & Odd. Our theme song is "Nobody Loves the Hulk" by The Traits.
Comic book writer Christopher Hastings (Deadpool, I Am Groot, Vote Loki) and comedian Chrissie Gruebel (UCB's Maude Night, Reductress, Funny or Die)talk about their trip to a Saturday Night Live dress rehearsal. It's the one that Black Panther star, Chadwick Boseman hosted, so it kind of counts! Watch the episode and then listen to us talk about what MAY or MAY NOT have been cut from the dress rehearsal. Cover art by Glossy & Odd Our theme song is "Nobody Loves the Hulk" by The Traits.
Comic book writer Christopher Hastings (Deadpool, I Am Groot, Vote Loki) and comedian Chrissie Gruebel (UCB's Maude Night, Reductress, Funny or Die) throw a few drinks back and talk about the super hero movie that saved Marvel: BLADE. We talk about sexy 90s vampires, sexy Civil War vampires, and the importance of sunscreen. We also had a try at pairing a cocktail with this movie, so before you listen to this episode, make yourself one of these: NEW YORK SOUR/BLOOD RAVE Combine 2 oz bourbon, 1 oz lemon juice, and 1 oz simple syrup in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake for about 30 seconds to a minute and strain into an old fashioned glass with fresh ice. Gently pour 1 tbsp dry red wine over the back of a spoon onto the top of the drink, so the red floats on top, just like a sprinkler system full of blood! Cover art by Glossy & Odd. Our theme song is "Nobody Loves the Hulk" by The Traits.
It's the first ever episode of HULK SMASHED! So fresh, we didn't even have a name when we recorded. But we sure had our premise: Comic book writer Christopher Hastings (Deadpool, I Am Groot, Vote Loki) and comedian Chrissie Gruebel (UCB's Maude Night, Reductress, Funny or Die) throw a few drinks back and talk about super hero movies! In this episode we break down the "post 9/11" Batman movie, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. Give it a watch before you listen! Or don't! We're not your mom/butler! Cover art by Glossy & Odd Our theme song is "Nobody Loves the Hulk" by The Traits.

This week’s episode was recorded on September 18th, 2016. The show this week features guests Nick and Kate to talk about politics in comic books. The topic meanders a bit, but the ultimate discussion of how politics are handled, presented, inserted, and masked in comics is discussed. This may seem heavy, but, on the whole, it’s a fun talk about how we as comic fans read into stories.
