"I think adoptees who are going to go try to find their family have to recognize that... once you get into the process, you just have to roll with it, right? You have to be optimistic and hopeful and just play it out." -- David R. Ford Episode Synopsis In this episode of Unraveling Adoption, host Beth Syverson delves into the complexities of adoption alongside her guest, David R. Ford, an adoptee who reunited with his birth family 20 years ago. The episode explores the theme of family relationships, especially in the context of reunion with birth families. Beth introduces David as an adoptee who was adopted at birth through a private adoption handled by a lawyer. David shares his early childhood experiences and the limited information he had about his birth parents, including the revelation that he had a seven-year older brother. Despite not initially feeling the need to find his birth parents, David's journey to reconnect with his birth family began in his late 30s. Through a series of events, David eventually reunites with his birth mother and discovers he is one of seven children, four of whom were given up for adoption. The podcast delves into the complexities of navigating newfound relationships with siblings and birth family members, highlighting the challenges and joys that come with such reunions. Beth also brings on Tibby, David's wife, to provide insights into the experience of being a spouse navigating the complexities of adoption reunion. Tibby shares her perspective on the intense emotions and dynamics that come with welcoming new family members into their lives. The episode touches on the importance of supportive adoptive parents, the emotional toll of navigating difficult family dynamics, and the significance of maintaining core values and boundaries throughout the reunion process. David reflects on the metaphorical significance of the title of his memoir, "Blind in One Eye," and the journey of self-discovery and acceptance that comes with reuniting with one's birth family. As the episode wraps up, Beth encourages listeners to explore the resources and support available on the Unraveling Adoption website, emphasizing the importance of seeking guidance and validation in the adoption journey. The episode concludes with a message of staying safe and embracing authenticity in navigating the complexities of adoption and family relationships. ===============

Download the *NEW* Round Report Card Tori sits down with Adam Walicki and Christine Fero. Christine kicks off the conversation with an update on her journey to a single-digit handicap, which she began on June 30, 2022. You can follow her progress in real-time on her Instagram (www.instagram.com/practice_makes_9)! Tori, Adam, and Christine then dive into today's topic: the importance of keeping stats, and how to use a round report card to track your game. Key Takeaways ● (02:48) When working to improve your handicap, the number won't mean as much as the confidence you develop on the course. When Christine began documenting her journey on Instagram over half a year ago, she had no idea how things would go. All that mattered was that she gave it her best shot. When she embraced that mindset, progress naturally followed. ● (16:01) You should prioritize your stats even over your handicap. Stats are like a handicap: Everybody should have them. However, not only do your stats give you an overall picture of your progress as a golfer, but they also tell you the direction you need to go to keep improving. ● (24:06) Take advantage of the round report card. You can use the round report card for any course and any round. Start by filling in the par in the top row, the score in the second row, then the fairway in the third. There is a row for yards in and clubs used, followed by greens in regulation (GIR). There is an optional row where you can note which direction you missed. Finally, there is a row for putts. ● (35:21) For a handicap index of 10-19, great goals are 5-6 fairways, 8+ GIR, 34 or fewer putts, and 50+ feet in putts made. ● (38:32) The latest version of the round report card includes rows for throwaways and opportunities. An opportunity is a birdie putt inside of about 18 feet down to 15 feet (the latter for more undulated greens). Throwaways is the most important category for any golfer striving for a single-digit handicap. Examples of throwaways (as listed on the new round report card) include: out-of-bounds, penalty shots, unplayable, sideways or backwards punch-out, bogie within 100 yards, 3 puts within 40 feet, putts missed within 3 feet. Savanna Lafontaine-Greywind had no reason to suspect her neighbor, Brooke Crews, was up to something. Brooke claimed she just needed a quick favor. Would Savanna come upstairs and try on a dress she'd been making? Savanna was eight months pregnant and about to sit down to dinner, but she told Brooke she'd help her out. It was the last thing she ever did. Then Kristin tells us a story that illustrates the dangers of becoming a confidential informant. When police discovered marijuana and ecstasy in 23-year-old Rachel Hoffman's apartment, they leveled with her. She could go to prison for up to four years. Or she could become a confidential informant. Rachel chose the latter and soon found herself at the center of a very dangerous drug bust. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. Season Finale. For three years now I've been nailing these little red crosses into the ground. I know it doesn't mean very much, but what the hell else am I supposed to do? Forget? Walk away with the same indifference I've resented in others? I know they don't fix anything; I know they don't make anything right. Maybe most people don't even know what they are. In fact, I'm sure they don't.I could have marked the actual burial plots – but with what? I can't put a name on them. I can't fit my outrage on a little stone marker (what's the character limit on those anyway?) Besides, putting a memorial in some remote corner of some equally remote cemetery, overtop of a forgotten body, is only going to result in a forgotten memorial.Visit us online at itsfoulplay.comCheck out or other podcasts at itsarclightmedia.comEnjoy the podcast and want to support us? The best imaginable alibi, outside of lunch with the Dalai Lama, is simply to place yourself in police custody at the time the crime is committed. If the police are with you, they know it's not you – or so the logic goes. This is, in fact, the very thought process that stalled the prosecution of Jerry Johns for the Redhead Murders.Support our show by becoming a Patreon at Patreon.com/itsfoulplayVisit us online at itsfoulplay.comCheck out our other podcasts! itsarclightmedia.comEpisode Sponsors:- Go to Everlane.com/foulplay and sign up for 10% off comfortable and stylish clothing made sustainably - Start getting rewards for brushing your teeth today, go to getquip.com/foulplay to save $10 on a Quip Electric Toothbrush

THROWAWAYS was the winner of BEST SHORT FILM at the ENVIRONMENTAL Feedback Film Festival. Great chat with Andy Carpenter on the process of writing this script. Watch the SHORT Screenplay Reading HEREAfter a seemingly insignificant plastic toy is manufactured by a young child in Latin America, it begins a journey across the world by tractor trailer, a fast-food restaurant trash can, SUV, a garbage truck, and an ocean-freighter. Each mode of transportation offers glimpses into the lives of its transporters, whether mundane, privileged, or desperate. Finally making its way into the grateful hands of a young orphan trying to survive in the trash-wastelands of Malaysia, these throwaways prove that significance is relative.CAST LIST:Narrator: Steve RizzoIris/Shelly: Julie SheppardJuan/Manager/Foreman: Geoff MaysMan/Father/Rayyan: Sean BallantyneOliver/Nathaniel: Allan Michael BrunetWife/Woman: Hannah EhmanFollow WILDsound Podcasts on all social media channels: @wildsoundpodSubmit to the festival anytime via FilmFreeway: https://filmfreeway.com/WILDsoundFilmandWritingFestivalSubscribe via Twitter: https://twitter.com/wildsoundfest

FINALLY! Manufacturers will be forced to take responsibility for recovering their products or product packaging and getting it recycled. From cardboard boxes to electronic goods, lightbulbs, all forms of plastic and glass jars and bottles, the manufacturers or importers will have to make a plan to get it back from consumers after they've done with it, so that it can be recycled or reused instead. There's literally no time to waste - landfill space is fast running out while currently just 10% of the things we throw out which can be recycled is actually being recycled. They will have to start new programmes, set up collection points, do regular audits and achieve stringent new targets in terms of new amendments to the National Environmental Management's Waste Act. Wendy Knowler provides insight on this, as well as the risky and expensive ATMs withdrawals. Despite a dramatic swing towards digital banking, South Africa is still a long way away from a cashless society, with more than half of the population still transacting in cash daily. But many people are unwittingly paying far too much to move their cash around. What is the cause? We find out on Consumerwatch. ECR Consumerwatch

Host Lisa Schweitzer is joined by Aubrey L. Hicks, Susan Lindau, and Joan Miller to discuss Victor LaValle's The Devil in Silver. Pepper is a big man. He's accused of a crime that he doesn't see himself in. He's dropped suddenly, into a budget-strapped mental institution in Queens, New York called New Hyde. He's not mentally ill, but that doesn't seem to matter - the police don't want to work unpaid overtime to process him and the hospital machine doesn't want to refuse. 72 hours turns into a month and then more. In the darkness of his room, he's visited by a terrifying creature with the body of an old man and the head of a bison who nearly kills him before being hustled away by the hospital staff. It isn't a delusion. The other patients confirm that a hungry devil roams the hallways when the sun goes down. Pepper makes friends with three other inmates and plans to fight back: Dorry, an elderly schizophrenic who's been on the ward for decades; Coffee (Kofi), an African immigrant with severe OCD; and Loochie, a bipolar teenage girl. What's real? Who is the very real monster and how do we fight it? How do we treat people unwanted by mainstream society? How do we know if we are experiencing reality? Read along with us! Next month we're reading The Seven Necessary Sins for Women and Girls by Mona Eltahaay. Join the conversation about each episode on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram. Today on Phinsider Daily, Matt Cannata recaps the first day of training camp. What stood out? What can we take away from it? What should we not overreact to? 1. For example, Raekwon McMillan didn't run with the starters in their Nickel defense. Should this be something we should be concerned about? 2. Is there really a quarterback competition, or is it too early to crown Ryan Fitzpatrick the starter? 3. What was Fitzpatrick doing with a young rookie? 4. What about Kenyan Drake and Kalen Ballage? We received reports from eyewitnesses on the ground and will report back to you what they saw...and what may not have necessarily been reported by the local media. LS Hawker’s new novel, publishing on January 22 and due for a major launch event on January 26, was a long time coming. In fact, it started out as a short story and then was developed into a full-length novel – her first – and subsequently tucked away in a drawer. Since that first book, Lisa Hawker’s writing career has produced three major standalone thrillers that have been translated into eight languages and put her on the USA Today list of bestsellers. But that first novel still scratched a certain itch and Lisa finally went back to it recently and, well, here we are on the eve of the launch of The Throwaways and Kirkus Reviews has already chimed in with a rave review. In addition to the new title, LS Hawker is the author of the thrillers The Drowning Game, Body and Bone, and End of the Road. Visit her website to view book trailers, listen to her podcast with daughter Chloe, The Lively Grind Cafe, and read about her adventures as a cocktail waitress, traveling Kmart portrait photographer, and witness to basement exorcisms. Reviews: Bounty #1, The Flintstones #1, Kim & Kim #1, Throwaways #1 It was some last minute negotiating/planning, but Jimmy and Producer Joe were able to pull off an 11th hour anniversary episode! Big thanks to special guests Michael Emerson, Carrie Preston, Fred Van Lente, Kate Rigg and Lyris Hung. And big ups to last minute drive-by guests that Jimmy called up: Miss Lasko-Gross, Vera Greentea and Rafael Kayanan. Of course, since it's an anniversary episode, there was plenty of singing. We brought back the "10 words or less" reviews and even covered some news in between. News included: a new Iron Man is coming and she's a young black female named Riri Williams, John Cho says we'll learn his character Sulu is gay in the upcoming Star Trek Beyond, Genndy Tartakovsky's Luke Cage mini-series is finally coming to Marvel, Mondo is releasing an Over the Garden Wall vinyl album, and DC is bringing you a He-Man and the Masters of the Universe/Thundercats mini-series in October. Derek is back at his local shop, Collected Comics and Games in Plano, TX, to talk with customers and shop employees about the comics they're reading. And for the month of July, the topic of conversation is summer reading. Many of the shop regulars are there, and store manager Sabrina and her associate, Stephanie, join in the discussion, as well. The conversation begins with DC Comics' Rebirth titles and how the quality of those stories are resonating with the gang (most of which are Marvel die-hards). That discussion leads to talk about the seemingly endless string of Big Two events and how even publishers such as IDW are seeing the need to create crossover events of their own. Other summer reading for the Collected gang includes How to Talk to Girls at Parties, Jade Street Protection Services, Bounty, Throwaways, Action Man, and Heathen (which was discussed in May's on-location episode). In addition, Sabrina also gives her take on some of the early releases she gets to read as shop manager -- e.g., Briggs Land and Black Hammer -- and Derek is appalled that at least one dedicated shop customer doesn't even know what Fables is. As is usual with the monthly on-location episodes, there's a lot of fun talk about a wide variety of comics, something to pique the interest of any Comics Alternative listener.
Hold on to your butts! It's another substantive, jam-packed episode where the Two Guys look through the latest Previews catalog. And for May, Andy W. and Derek see a lot of good stuff, enough to make this a longer-than-average episode. (Yes, the guys are going into 2+ hours territory again, but only slightly.) Among the many solicits Andy and Derek highlight are of titles from publishers such as Dark Horse Comics - Black Hammer #1 (again!), Angel Catbird, and The Battles of Bridget Lee DC/Vertigo - The Hellblazer: Rebirth #1, American Vampire Anthology #2, and Fables: The Deluxe Edition, Book 13 IDW Publishing/Top Shelf - ROM #1, Snake Tales!, Love Addict: Confessions of a Serial Dater, and Dirty Duck Image Comics - Snotgirl #1, Throwaways #1, and The Hunt #1 Action Lab - The House of Montresor AfterShock - Captain Kid #1 and Lifespanners #1 Alternative Comics - Flashed: Sudden Stories in Comics and Prose, Terra Flats #1, and True Stories #2 Archie Comics - Betty and Veronica #1 and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Big Planet/Retrofit Comics - The Experts BOOM! Studios - Sombra #1 and Adventure Time Comics #1 Canton Street Press - Blood Is the Harvest #16 (Replica Edition) Chapterhouse Comics - Johnny Canuck: Compendium 1941-1946 Dover Publications - The Boys of Sheriff Street Fantagraphics Books - Neat Stuff, Garden of Flesh, and Hip Hop Family Tree Book 4: 1984-1985 First Second - Last Man, Vol. 5: The Order Humanoids - I Am Legion and Milo Manara's Gullivera Deluxe Jet City Comics - Cirque American: Girl over Paris #1 Kodansha Comics - Appleseed Alpha, Vol. 1 Nobrow Press - Einstein Odod Books/Uncivilized Books - The Whistling Factory Titan Comics - Torchwood #1 and The Best of B.C. Vanguard Productions - The Sensuous Frazetta VIZ Media - Monster: The Perfect Edition, Vol. 9 Stone Bridge Press - The Osamu Tezuka Story: A Life in Manga and Anime In addition, Derek and Andy discuss other matters, including a correction from last week's publisher spotlight -- Melissa Mendes's Lou is actually an Alternative Comics publication, not from Hic + Hoc -- and an email of appreciation they received from Jon Allen whose book, Ohio Is for Sale, was discussed in that same episode. They also talk a little bit about this coming weekend's Free Comic Book Day, wonder over the new Image+ insert magazine (and Andy is pissed that he didn't get one with his copy of Previews), poke fun at Millarworld, and point out the truly freaky and absolutely unnecessary Big Head Walking Dead figures they saw in the catalog.
