It's the interview Alan has been wanting to do ever since we started the podcast, and it did not disappoint! We finally got chatting to the one and only Rick Remender, best known for era defining runs on Venom and Uncanny X-Force amongst others while at Marvel, but for us it's his Indie work that shines brightest. Deadly Class, Fear Agent, Black Science, Seven to Eternity, Low, Tokyo Ghost and many others, demonstrate that he is one of the most consistent and important creators working in the medium today. We talk all of those over 2 episodes, as well as getting started, nearly going bankrupt, his time at Marvel, his Giant Generator imprint at Image, adaptations to other mediums and what he hopes for the future. Strap in, this is up there with our favourite ever episodes. We hope you enjoy it just as much.

I'm joined today by newcomer on the show Max Hoven. I was first introduced to his work a few years ago with It Eats What Feeds It and Max is back at it again with the same creative team, co-writer and friend Aaron Crow and artist Gabriel Iumazark, with a fantastic cyberpunk horror project called Liquid Kill which has been described as Ghost In The Shell meets John Wick. The first six issues are in the wild now and are being collected into a trade with arc two green lit and scheduled to be released a little later this year from Massive Publishing. Gabriel's stunning artistic work reminds me a lot of Sean Murphy's work on Tokyo Ghost and if you are looking for a dark futuristic sci-fi read, make sure to pick this up. I loved it. Max also has a great YouTube channel called Indie Comic Empire with videos designed and tailored to help other comics creators navigating the sometimes rough waters of publishing and producing their work. Make sure to check it out. From the publisher For the staff and clientele of a mysterious island hotel, it's just another night of luxury and vice until members of Liquid Kill (a notoriously violent, all-female militia), lay siege. Demanding compliance or death as they gather intelligence, the adrenaline quickly floods the halls as the team eliminates all threats with ease in their search for their kidnapped leader. That is until something is unleashed… something hungry. Our episode sponsors unSeen/unHeard: Disability and Neurodivergence Comic Anthology on Kickstarter Arkenforge Play TTRPG games?

A great discussion with Sean Gordon Murphy, superstar creator behind Batman White Knight, Chrononauts, Tokyo Ghost, Joe the Barbarian, Punk Rock Jesus and many more as he joins me for a conversation about his career, getting into comics and why perseverance is so important if you want to make it big. He is also the creator of The Plot Holes, a comic that creates a bold new universe of action and adventure with an original hook you haven't seen before: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/th... Murphy, who has worked with many of the biggest names in the industry in addition to being one himself, gives us some insight into working with people like Grant Morrison, Scott Snyder, Rick Remender and Mark Millar and how it helped shape his career and work. An incredible conversation with one of the biggest talents in the comic book industry today. ¡Disfrutadlo!
In this conversational ramble, Matt and Damian discuss generational differences in comic book reading and ponder who their number one comic book writer of all time would be. This is the conversation that immediately followed last episode's discussion of Tokyo Ghost and is basically a series of digressions.
This week the Two Guys with PhDs Talking about Comics explore four new titles, each quite different one from the other. They begin with the new graphic novel from New Zealand creator Ant Sang, The Dharma Punks (Conundrum Press). On the surface it is a story about coming to terms with death, but there's much more going on in this 415-page book. In fact, this is one of the most ambitious narratives the guys have encountered so far this year, and certainly the most philosophical. Its protagonist, Chopstick, tries to comes to grips with the suicide of a close friend and what that loss means in his own life, while at the same time participating in an anarchist act against a corporate franchise. The events in the book take place roughly over a two-day period, but one of strengths of this narrative is how Sang manipulates time in a Faulkner-like manner, making the past ever-present. This is a rich and complex text, and at times Gene and Derek feel at a loss trying to put the gist of The Dharma Punks into words for an audio podcast. Next, the guys take on a much more constrained narrative, but one that is nonetheless multifaceted in its own ways, Noah Van Sciver's My Hot Date (Kilgore Books). This is an autobiographical comic, and as the title suggests, it's about a date that the fourteen-year-old Noah has with someone he met via America Online. Van Sciver has written short memoir-inspired stories in the past, but this is the longest, and definitely the most humorously self-deprecating, that he's produced to date. This is just one of the many comics that Van Sciver has released over the past year, many of which are published through Kilgore Books...a growing presences in the Two Guys' arsenal of go-to small publishers. After that, Derek and Gene turn their attention to the first issue in Rick Remender and Sean Murphy's new series from Image Comics, Tokyo Ghost. This is a futuristic story that takes as its premise the overriding and ever-present impact of on-demand digital culture in our lives. This inaugural issue does a fine job of setting up this narrative world, but Gene wonders if the nonstop action and complex visuals may be too much at times. Lastly, the guys take a brief look at an issue of an online zine they have just discovered, Jackie Batey's FutureFantasteek! Issue #16 was released at the beginning of 2015, and while the latest installment can stand on its own, Derek and Gene suggest that the title can best be appreciated when read over the course of its run. For those with a diverse taste in comics, this episode is definitely for you!
