Summary: *Ron Jones discusses treatment resistant depression (TRD), which occurs when multiple classes of antidepressant medications fail to provide relief. *TRD is described as a subcategory of major depressive disorder, unrelated to therapy but linked to the ineffectiveness of psychotropic medications. *Ron shares his personal experience with TRD, highlighting the frustration and discouragement of ineffective treatments and the lengthy process of testing medications. *He suggests that emotional and mental needs, when unmet, can lead to chemical imbalances, and treating only the symptoms without addressing underlying issues is insufficient. *Jones emphasizes the importance of understanding one's identity in relation to God, suggesting that misalignment can contribute to mental health issues. *He recounts a pivotal moment in a church service where he felt the Holy Spirit's guidance, leading to a significant change in his depression. *Jones discusses the role of community, vulnerability, and addressing lies or misconceptions about oneself as crucial steps in the healing process. *He advocates for the recognition of negative emotions as truthful indicators and encourages seeking the Holy Spirit's guidance for healing. *Jones stresses the importance of relational accountability and having supportive people in one's life to provide honest feedback. *He concludes by affirming the possibility of finding hope and new life even after experiencing deep depression, through a relationship with Christ and understanding one's true identity. PODCAST INTRO: My guest today, Ron Jones, is a pastoral counselor and mental health advocate and he stopped by to share his first-hand experiences and insights into his victory over treatment-resistant depression (TRD). This discussion touches on the complexities of living with TRD, the challenges of traditional treatment methods, and the importance of having a strong identity in Christ and growing in faith throughout the healing process. What is Treatment-Resistant Depression? Treatment-resistant depression is a severe form of major depressive disorder. Ron explained that clinically, it is defined as depression that does not respond to at least three different classes of antidepressant medications. Ron also shared that this condition is not merely about resistance to therapy but is specifically linked to the ineffectiveness of psychotropic medicines. The Struggle with Traditional Treatments Ron describes the frustration of navigating the medical system, which often prioritizes treating symptoms over addressing root causes. He likens the process to taking aspirin for a headache without investigating the underlying cause. He even pointed out that this approach can be disheartening, especially when medications take weeks to show results, if at all. A Journey of Identity and Faith Throughout his journey, Ron emphasizes the importance of understanding one's true identity. He believes that much of mental illness stems from a misalignment between who we are and who we perceive ourselves to be. For Ron, this journey of self-discovery was deeply intertwined with his faith, which provided a foundation and a source of hope. This foundation withstood 13 years of struggling AND also provided room for growth and intimacy with Christ as he searched how to get out from under his depression. As shared in then opening clip….Ron was desperately clinging to hope God and yet had no hope. Steps Toward Healing Ron offered practical steps for those struggling with depression: Evaluate Your "Have To's": Examine the non-negotiables in your life that might be contributing to your stress and consider whether they are truly necessary. Identify Primary Lies: Reflect on the negative emotions you feel most often and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the first time you felt this way. Listen for the Holy Spirit: Spend time in silence, asking the Holy Spirit, "What's We most important thing I could hear right now?" and be open to whatever answer comes without editing it. Something I added, only because I have to do this: when I'm seeking God for an answer I have learned that I need to write it down. It is very commen for me to forget the details of what He spoke into my spirit. If you want to add a #4: Write down what you hear the Holy Spirit speak into your spirit and refer to it as often as you need to. Conclusion Ron's story gives us a deeper revelation about Treatment Resistant Depression because it's from his personal experience; his 13 year battle to find relief. His faith, community, and self-reflection was instrumental in overcoming his TRD. While traditional treatments may fall short mainly because they're go to is to fix things with medicine vs looking at a more holistic approach that would include a deep dive into one's identity. So Ron's journey offers hope and encouragement to those facing similar struggles, reminding us that there is always a path to discovering the benefits of knowing the truth and having a stronger identity. The only thing better than talking to one Sean is when you add a second Shawn to the mix. Returning to the podcast this week, I'm thrilled to share this recent wonderfully rollicking, quick-witted, story, & insight-filled conversation I had with two of my dearest friends: the veteran Boston-based WBUR film critic Sean Burns & the award-winning internationally bestselling novelist S.A. Cosby. Zooming in to cover some of their (sometimes divisive) crime movie favorites not called THE GODFATHER, for this episode, we agreed to take a closer look at MENACE II SOCIETY, THE FUNERAL, BLOW, & WE OWN THE NIGHT, but then wound up celebrating, critiquing, & shouting out several other under-discussed crime movie faves as well. The perfect accompaniment to your summer travels or long commute to work, listen with a notebook handy to write down some of these great movies. Sean Burns' Bio: A film critic for WBUR's Arts & Culture and a contributing writer at North Shore Movies and Crooked Marquee, he was Philadelphia Weekly's lead film critic from 1999-2013 and worked as contributing editor at the Improper Bostonian from 2006-2014. His reviews, interviews, and essays have also appeared in Metro, The Village Voice, Rolling Stone, The Boston Herald, Nashville Scene, Time Out New York, Philadelphia City Paper, and RogerEbert.com. A graduate of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, Burns was a recurring guest on the late David Brudnoy's WBZ 1030 AM radio show, and in 2002, received an award for Excellence in Criticism from the Greater Philadephia Society of Professional Journalists. His writing has been called "jocular but serious, more like a 1940s daily reporter pounding out columns on a manual typewriter than a typical twenty-first-century navel-gazing film critic." Meanwhile, his sisters still tell him that he "swears too much and drives like an old lady." S.A. Cosby's Bio: S. A. Cosby is an Anthony Award-winning writer from Southeastern Virginia. He is the author of the New York Times bestseller Razorblade Tears and Blacktop Wasteland, which won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, was a New York Times Notable Book, and was named a best book of the year by NPR, The Guardian, and Library Journal, among others. In this first episode of Languaging Hampton Roads, co-hosts Jill Winkowski, a Tidewater native, and Prue Salasky, a UK native, introduce themselves, describe their background in linguistic studies, and explain their interest in the region's life and language. Note: For the most part they use the terms Hampton Roads (a political designation) and Tidewater (a geographical designation) interchangeably to denote this corner of Southeastern Virginia that extends around the Chesapeake Bay and is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean. This episode focuses on the identifying characteristics of a Tidewater dialect and Tidewater Voices, an online archival collection of 300-plus stories collected from residents throughout the region. Students in the sociolinguistics classes of professor Dr. Bridget Anderson at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va., have been collecting these stories since 2005. Thanks to a years-long effort by Languaging co-host Jill Winkowski and a team at the ODU library, the audio recordings and their transcripts became available to the public in late 2023 at https://digitalcommons.odu.edu/tidewatervoices/ or find it by searching Tidewater Voices in your browser. Soon, members of the community will be able to submit their own stories for review and publication. In this episode Prue and Jill interview two ODU linguistics students who conducted interviews with their families for the Tidewater Voices project. One, Jennifer Williams, interviewed her grandmother who grew up during segregation; the other, Pettie Perkins, talked to her three children to illustrate contemporary and future issues, such as the role of social media and technology in their lives. Both paint a vivid picture of the area in their personal stories and both indicate how the study of linguistics expanded their understanding of their family history and identity. Finally, Jill poses a challenge to listeners: Explain the English present perfect and give an example to illustrate its use. Southeastern Virginia is comprised of seven cities, each of which is waterfront, and many of which are separated by large bodies of water. The Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel was constructed in the mid 1950's to connect Norfolk and Virginia Beach with Newport News and Hampton without obstructing marine traffic. The Virginia Department of Transportation launched one of the largest infrastructure projects in North America to expand the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel. Chief Engineer Ryan Banas joins Infrastructure Junkies to explain this incredible feat of infrastructure expansion, and in the process, tells our audience exactly how this bridge goes under water.

Southeastern Virginia currently experiences the fastest rate of sea level rise on the Atlantic seaboard, and that's only projected to accelerate. For many neighborhoods, it's not a question of if they will go underwater, but when. On the west coast, between $8 billion and $10 billion of existing property in California is likely to be underwater by 2050, with an additional $6 billion to $10 billion at risk during high tides. Increasingly, local and regional governments are considering – and starting – buyouts of flood-prone properties. How will we manage the homes, farms, naval bases and infrastructure destined to go under water? How do federal and private insurance programs hamper or help moves away from climate-disrupted regions? Episode 8: Melissa Helmick. "Just because it's common for moms to struggle, doesn't mean it's normal." TW: Melissa and I get really vulnerable in this episode, and we discuss some pretty serious topics, including domestic violence, sexual assault, miscarriage, infertility, abortion, and PTSD. So if you're feeling like any of those topics might be difficult to listen to, then you might want to move on to another episode. Melissa is a birth and parenthood photographer who lives in Southeastern Virginia with her husband, her 3 rambunctious children, and their dog, Lilly. She is also finishing training to be a birth, postpartum, and bereavement doula. During our conversation, we discuss the difficulties we face when seeking a diagnosis — like when doctors aren't on your side, or when you constantly question yourself and wonder if you need help at all, and the emotional roller coaster ride of finding the right medication. We also talk about emotional regulation in motherhood and how sleep deprivation and the noise and chaos of young children can make you feel like a failure at everything, and how to deal with that chronic overwhelm. If you ever felt pre-diagnosis like “something is not right with me” but you couldn't put your finger on it and couldn't find the support you need, then this episode is definitely for you. Enjoy! So I, if you can't tell from my accent, I am kind of in the South, I'm on the coast of Virginia. I'm in Southeastern Virginia and I am an urban flower farmer. My little three acre farm is right in the middle of the city. Literally I'm surrounded by 200,000 residents and my place. Although when I first, my first half of my career, I only had an acre and a quarter totally, including where my home was. That's now up to almost three acres and I have no hoophouses. The Flower Farmer: An Organic Grower's Guide to Raising and Selling Cut Flowers Everything I do is grown outdoors in a garden or a field. And, you know, I started farming in 1998, like so many other people after reading (http://amzn.to/1O1eUfZ) and just hit the ground running because I'm such a follower, meaning I really followed her instructions. I think it helped me to be successful right out of the gate. And when you're successful out of the gate, it helps you just to keep on going after it, you know, not everybody is like us, Jackie, where you were talking about how you kept trying and trying with your podcast. Some people just throw in the towel and I understand that, but then there's people like me and you that just keep bulldoze and after it, and but for me in the flower farming, my first customer ever that I had just really took me under his wing and ushered me right into this business. And then I just ran with it. And my business has really changed over the years.I started teaching and doing lots of programs and speaking to groups and that led to a book deal. And then I started writing books and speaking even more and traveling. And during that time I launched an online garden store called the Gardener's workshop.com (https://www.thegardenersworkshop.com/) where I just sell the same tools and seeds and supplies that I actually use in my gardens and the same seed varieties. We do not save seed. We just buy extra from the seed houses and package them with our instructions and offer those to our folks that are looking for great cut flower garden seeds. And then about three years ago, I launched (https://www.thegardenersworkshop.com/online-courses/). I built my own first course and it's such an... Support this podcast

From 1953 until 1970 Hayden High School was the only place for African American high schoolers to get an education - despite the ending of segregated schools in 1954. The school was named for education pioneer Della Hayden, daughter of a freed slave who graduated from Hampton Institute, taught in Franklin public schools for years before going on to become the first female principal at State Normal School (now Virginia State University); returned to Franklin and ultimately founded a small boarding school for Black girls, where she served as principal until her death in 1924. Living up to the rich history of its namesake, Hayden High School graduated some of the most prominent African Americans in Franklin. The building was approved in December 2012 for listing in the Virginia Landmarks Register by the Board of Historic Resources and was placed on the National Park Service National Register of Historic Places in 2013. On the next Another View, we'll talk about the history of Hayden High, its legacy and plans for the future with Dr. Alvin Harris with the Hayden Group, and John Skirven, CEO, Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia.

In 1994, Josh Feldman became the second All-American in school history at Virginia Tech after he finished seventh at heavyweight. A short stint in college coaching and a conversation with some friends led to him enlisting in the United States Navy. Feldman got back into wrestling after being stationed in Southeastern Virginia at the numerous bases in the area. Coaching at Great Bridge and Grassfield High Schools in Chesapeake, Feldman got deployed and his high school coaching career seemingly came to an end. After putting in 20 years in the Navy as a pilot, Feldman has settled in Central Pennsylvania, taking a new challenge that involves coaching again, but this time with the new Beat The Streets program in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. In an area known for wrestling, Lancaster City has been struggling with participation and reach. This is where Feldman's task comes in. It's a diverse area with various socio-economic backgrounds that make this a challenge. What does Feldman look forward to? What does he think about his alma mater becoming a national power?
