This episode is brought to you by Beekeeper's Naturals. Right now, we're in the midst of cold and flu season, alright. Cold and flus for some reason, because of marketing, they get a whole season dedicated to colds and flus. But the bottom line is, we do wanna make sure that we are taking care of our immune system, fortifying things, and making sure that our bodies are resilient in the face of anything that we might be exposed to. Now, as the statement says, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. So we wanna make sure that we're being proactive and focus on prevention. One of the things that I do proactively, especially during this time of year, is utilize one of the most renowned products for fortifying the immune system from bees called propolis. A study published in the peer reviewed journal, Antiviral Chemistry and Chemotherapy, revealed that propolis has significant anti-viral effects, specifically in reducing viral lung infections. Now, quality is everything when it comes to propolis, and the propolis that I utilize is the Propolis Throat Spray from Beekeeper's Naturals, go to beekeepersnaturals.com/ model. That's beekeepersnaturals.com/model, you get 20% off their incredible propolis immune spray. Now again, this is something that I use on a regular basis. I also make sure that my family is getting their sprays in, and it's backed by really solid science, and the proof is in the pudding, I'm not one of those guys that's just out here getting sicky sick all the time. And I definitely attribute proactive use of this propolis immune spray, it's just really taken things to another level. And if you look at some of the background on this, this is really the immune system for the hive itself. And there's been a resonance for thousands of years, humans have been utilizing this, but the key is also supporting, regenerative beekeeping. Because our bees are being hit hard by all of these different environmental pollutants that have recently, just especially in the last few decades, have been integrating themselves into our environment. And we're talking billions of tons of newly invented toxicants are added to our environment each year. And this is coming from data from the EPA, the Environmental Protection Agency, about three billion tons of these toxins from "normal business practices". We're not talking about those big events you might see on the news, we're just talking about day-to-day run-of-the mill, literally events that are impacting our environment and deeply impacting populations of bees. And so investing in companies like Beekeeper's Naturals is something really special because not only are we getting something special for our own health, but we're supporting regenerative beekeeping in a huge, huge way. And by the way, when it comes down to it, especially when we're looking at, okay, we've got a sick kid or maybe we're coming down with something. Typically in our culture, we're turning to these ridiculous, highly refined, all these different chemicals, newly invented compounds, not to mention the drug agents that are a lot of times, not even necessary. And so one of the most popular conventional cough syrups out there on store shelves, you know the one, alright, there's several of them. There's Benadryl, there's NyQuil. I don't even wanna say their names. But they contain things like FD&C Blue number 1, FD&C Red number 40, high fructose corn syrup, propylene glycol, saccharin sodium. Like multiple forms of refined sugars and sweeteners and all of these again synthetic chemicals that are anti-health. And there are certain things that have been proven. These are backed by science to be equally as beneficial, but far less toxic. The combination of first and foremost, honey... Let's talk about that. A randomized double-blind placebo-controlled study revealed that raw honey, that's the key, was able to outperform placebo and significantly reduce cough frequency and severity at night and improve sleep quality. The cough syrup from Beekeeper's Naturals should be a staple in your cabinet because it also contains several other science-backed nutritional sources, including elderberry. A double blind placebo-controlled study, published in the peer reviewed journal, Advances in Traditional Medicine found that after 48 hours of treatment with elderberry coughing was relieved in 31% of patients versus the placebo. It works, it works if you work it. So highly recommend getting yourself some of these resources. You don't wanna wait around until you need it, make sure that you have it on hand. And also they have some incredible lozenges for you as well without all those highly refined sugars and chemicals. They're doing so many good things. Go to beekeepersnaturals.com/model, that's beekeepersnaturals.com./model for 20% off store-wide. This episode is brought to you by HVMN. I wanna share something with you that has been fueling my workouts recently. Numerous studies, including a study published by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, aka, the FASEB Journal have found that exogenous ketones can be up to 28% more efficient in generating energy than glucose alone. And because of this something that, listen, there are so many different supplements that are out there on the market, very few things do you experience a change the first day. Now this isn't true for everybody, but for me, this was the case. I was shocked. I actually took time stepping away from everything else that I was doing as far as supplementation around training. Gave myself a break, and then did this with a lot of focus and intention to see, hey, what are the kind of results that I could see by utilizing Ketone-IQ? And I was really just blown away. My stamina was significantly increased, but more so my recovery afterwards, it was really impressive. I just felt like I could do so much more than I normally do. And I'm somebody who really prides myself on being a high performer and being able to really challenge my limits and do exceptional things. And so to do what I was typically doing and didn't have energy left in the tank, I was just like, wow, this is something special. I need to tell more people about this. So right now, you can head over to hvmn.com/model, and they're going to give you 30% off of your first subscription order. It'll be taken off automatically at checkout. And I'm telling you, this is the real deal. Go to hvmn.com/model checkout Ketone IQ today.

Did you know that dementia begins developing 20–30 years before any symptoms emerge ... with negative changes beginning in the brain in our 40s and 50s? At age 41, Cat learned that her genotype gives her a 92% chance of developing Alzheimer's. With the threat of early onset Alzheimer's looming, Cat made a series of changes that led her neurologist to ask (after her bloodwork came back): “I've never seen an improvement like this. Did you steal someone's blood??!” Learn how she made her changes stick, how her new lifestyle has led to more entrepreneurial creativity ... and what you can do to have the healthiest brain now and for decades to come! It's a No Brainer: Protect Your Business by Protecting Your Most Valuable Asset. A few years ago, Cat Hoke became passionate about brain health and preventing cognitive decline (especially Alzheimer's). She give this extremely informative talk to share her personal journey after her doctor told her that, “Your lifestyle is burning your brain out!” She has since made remarkable reversals in her cognitive decline, and despite her current physical limitations, her brain remains sharp. Cat is a previous guest on IMPACT and we felt that her story is so compelling that we needed to share it without our IMPACT audience. It's an overall term that describes a group of symptoms including memory loss and loss of cognitive abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer's disease is a degenerative brain disease and the most common form of dementia, accounting for 60-80% of dementia cases. Introduction Have you ever wondered how to boost your health through healthier sleeping habits? Sleep Smarter teaches you how to do exactly that. Too many of us fail to understand the value of sleep and the incredible impact sleep can have on our health. This 290-page book gives readers actionable tips. You can use these tips to sleep better, feel better, and do better. StoryShot #1: Sleep Is Critical for Optimal Productivity and More “You will perform better, make better decisions, and have a better body when you get the sleep you require.” ― Shawn Stevenson Have you ever wondered why sleep is valuable? The average person spends one-third or nearly 230,000 hours sleeping in their lifetime. That can make getting in your 8 hours feel like a massive waste of time. Many of us don't know that getting enough rest is critical to optimizing the time we aren't sleeping. Sleeping enough and sleeping well are essential for being productive during daylight hours. Our brains need a compound called glucose to function optimally. And studies show that people who sleep less tend to have less glucose in their brain tissue. This phenomenon is mainly present in the prefrontal cortex, which helps us solve problems and perform more complex cognitive tasks. Sleep handles everything from regulating our appetite and consolidating memories to strengthening immune system function and repairing damaged cells. Sleep is precious for your health for these reasons and many more. StoryShot #2: Sun and Screen Exposure Can Throw Off Your Circadian Rhythm Humans need light. Since the dawn of human time, we've required sunlight to produce vitamin D. Our bodies can't make this vitamin naturally. But we also need light because it regulates the circadian rhythm, aka our sleep-wake schedule. Light exposure correlates with your sleep schedule because of a hormone called melatonin. Melatonin tells our brains when it's time to sleep and when it's time to wake up. Melatonin needs exposure to sunlight during the day. You can throw off your melatonin levels if you get too much light exposure when you're supposed to be sleeping. This effect is why sleep scientists recommend not using blue-light screens before you go to bed. “...Make it a mandate to turn off all screens at least 90 minutes before bedtime in order to allow melatonin and cortisol levels to normalize.” ― Shawn Stevenson. StoryShot #3: Temperature Is the Most Important Factor for Sleeping Well--- Disclaimer: This is an...

If the future of productivity means investing in creativity, how do you create space and make time to access such a visionary superpower? Heath Armstrong shares intuitive self-affirmation exercises, healthy swaps for your brain and body and mindful ways to act without reacting to restore the inner artist within. In this new episode of Lisa Buyer’s Digital Detox Secrets Podcast, Heath Armstrong, founder of Rage Create, gets candid on how hitting rock bottom led him to declutter the digital and reclaim his spot in the physical world. Cleanse the Gremlins After waking up face down in his garage with a bloody nose and to the nearby smell of his car engine running, Heath adopted a more natural lifestyle that soon evolved into an entrepreneurial breakthrough. While navigating through depression and imposter syndrome, Heath sought purpose and clarity from hundreds of inspiring strangers. Their worldly wisdom and shared ideas became Heath’s recipe for creative motivation. His Sweet-Ass Journals, Affirmation Decks, and Never Stop Peaking podcast help to remind us that we are power-packed with magic. Heath says that the best way to deal with life’s many gremlins is by learning how to react to them. Some helpful methods include taking action with affirmations, writing/drawing in journals, and befriending nature. Lay the Groundwork for Digital Detox “Going outside is a digital detox secret.” --Heath Armstrong Nature is at the core of who we are, which is why Heath encourages us to connect with Earth’s elements. Switch out your tap water for the ultimate mineral cocktail, complete with lemon and Selina Naturally Celtic Sea Salt. Avoid caffeine and alcohol, or try to use them in moderation. Place earthing mats under your bed to enhance sleep. Go outside to reduce inflammation and stress levels. No Such Thing as a Perfect Life Living a seemingly perfect life does not mean that you will not experience depression, anxiety or sadness. And the same goes for living a seemingly hard life. The path to destruction or happiness is not linear. All we can do is learn from ourselves and others while trying to trudge past the layers of muck accumulated throughout the many lives that we live. Heath’s good and bad days probably look different than yours, and his detox tips may not resonate with you. But if you lead with an open heart, you’ll end up discovering your own recipe for creative motivation, just as Heath did.

Starting a business needs a lot of planning to be done and focus on for bigger success. Realizing the purpose of your business and having held to your vision will help you in your business in the long run. Furthermore, when everything turns to be vague, you will just have to remember your purpose and your vision. Being financially successful will motivate us as an entrepreneur but is it really enough? Are we going to be satisfied? How long is it going to last? Chasing the money is not the only thing that should matter as an entrepreneur. Having your purpose and vision will certainly play a huge factor in creating opportunities for bigger success. The purpose will not only benefit you but also other people that will need your service. Your vision will be part of your drive to move forward. Make an impact and turn your vision into reality! Here are a few insights you’ll hear in today’s podcast show The huge effect of passion on your business success The importance of transforming your vision into reality How your purpose creates a big impact on your success Focus: Your key to a successful business Creating opportunities by helping other people in need Why is it important to manage your ego to be able to achieve success? And a whole lot more! Success Quotes “Stop chasing the money and start chasing the passion.” - Tony Hsieh ‘If you pursue your passion, the money will follow.” ‘If you are driven in service, you are going to find more meaning in your life.” “The best approach in pursuing success is always following your vision.” ‘If everything is driven from your vision, you set yourself for a greater opportunity.” “When I chased after the money, I never had enough. The was Shawn Stevenson's second time on the show and what a treat it was. For those that don't know Shawn Stevenson is the creator of The Fat Loss Code which we recommend to people all the time who are interested in learning how to lose weight the right way. I really like the work that he's doing and the heart with which he does it. This episode we talked about sleep and how to improve sleep naturally and cure insomnia. Here's some of the topics we discussed: What's the best sleep attire Time going to bed, does it matter? Polyphasic sleep patterns Temperature of the room The best time for melatonin production Low Blue Light glasses and if they work Angle of the head and bed Shift work & why it's so damaging EMF Radiation and why it's harmful for sleep Grounding technologies What foods to avoid before bed How much sleep do we need? Sleep disorders and sleeping problems are a huge problem in today's world. Millions of people today deal with issues like sleep apnea, snoring, waking u in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and can't go back to sleep. He wrote a book called Sleep Smarter: 21 Proven Tips to Sleep Your Way To a Better Body, Better Health and Bigger Success that you might want to take a look at. It has received some pretty amazing reviews from people like Daniel Vitalis, Pat Flynn and others. I have not read it yet but having spent some time with Shawn in person down in San Diego and speaking with him over email and during our two conversations on this show, I'm pretty darn confident he's going to deliver some amazing information. I have the book on my Kindle and am going to read it as soon as I get a chance. We talked a lot about many different issues like what to do about your sleep patterns if you're a shift worker. We talked about how EMF damages your ability to have a deep restful sleep with lots of REM. We talked about why it's more important to focus on when you sleep vs how much sleep you get. We discussed the low blue light glasses I wear to help reduce the amount of blue light that gets emitted from computer screens, cell phones and iPad type devices. You can also get them from Amazon as well. After we spoke with Dr. Richard Hansler As an anecdotal story I wear them every night for several hours and I seem to sleep really well as a result. I'm a big fan of them. We don't produce as much melatonin when the spectrum of blue light enters our eyes for some reason. We also discussed the type of clothing we should wear when we go to bed. Did you know that women who wear bras (not the ones from Ohganix) when they're sleeping significantly increase their risk of breast cancer? It's pretty amazing that bras are so harmful to our health and we don't even know it. We also talked about polyphasic sleep cycles and why it's probably not that healthy for you. You’re sitting in your office. It’s a busy week at work and you’re preparing for an important meeting. You receive word that two of your team members just submitted their two week notice. Your phone rings. It’s a client panicking about their social media campaign. A few minutes later, the phone rings again. It’s the nurse from your kid’s school, who got hurt on the playground. You look at the calendar for the rest of your week and you feel overwhelmed. What do most of us usually do in this scenario? We skip workouts and meals. We cancel our plans to go out with friends and family. A week goes by like this, then two weeks, then two months — and some of us spend years putting ourselves on the back burner. All of us have felt that overwhelm, and it took big wake-up calls to help us break the cycle. So, today, we’re going to share our stories — when we weren’t taking care of ourselves at all, how it affected our lives and businesses, and the incredible results we saw when we started prioritizing self-care. You CAN have it all — but only if you prioritize filling your cup up first. Welcome to the fourth episode of The Sandbox. My experimental project to develop interviewing skills and discover the nuances of creating a podcast. Today's guest is Shane Jenne. In this episode, Shane and I discuss his early struggles with weight and how that was bound to lead him to a life filled with chronic health issues. Instead of fulfilling this prophecy though, Shane transformed his life losing 80lbs the summer after his freshman year of college. He didn't stop there though. His transformation inspired him to help those wanting to start their own health revolution. Shane became a certified personal trainer and strength and conditioning coach and recently started an online personal training program for the entertainment industry that includes actors, dancers, and performers. You'll hear tips on fitness, nutrition, and sleep in this episode. I hope you enjoy it! Ross Finman is the AR Strategy Lead at Niantic, the company behind Pokemon GO and Harry Potter Wizards Unite. You may have noticed the press over the last few months that Niantic is making a heavy push to support and expand the AR ecosystem through the development of their Real World Platform (planet-scale, augmented reality platform for current and future generations of AR hardware), as well as the establishment of their Niantic Creator Program and Beyond Reality Fund. Plus they recently announced a collaboration with Qualcomm to accelerate AR software and hardware. As the AR Strategy Lead, Ross is a key driver of these efforts. He joined Niantic through the acquisition of his AR technology company, Escher Reality, which he founded while pursuing his PhD in Robotics at MIT.On the whole, Ross is an entrepreneur with over a decade of experience at the intersection of the digital and physical worlds through Augmented Reality and Robotics.Ross and I spoke on stage at the 2019 VRAR Global Summit in Vancouver. This episode includes our on-stage conversation as well as about 19 minutes of additional Q&A we did back stage.Regular listeners might remember Ross and I did something similar at AWE back in May, and here we continue that conversation.I ask why Pokemon GO should be considered a harbinger of what’s to come, and not an outlier of AR success. We also explore what’s needed to make AR-based experiences an everyday habit, and why developers should trust Niantic enough to build their business on their platform.Ross goes on to give his perspective on the challenges of creating an AR-first mobile app.You can find all of the show notes at thearshow.com.

This week on the show, a few quick news items and then an interesting thought experiment: what if Ghostbusters II had been the biggest movie of Summer 1989, beating out Batman among others for box office gold? And what if that meant a third sequel would have been made around 1991? What would it have meant for the franchise? Would we still be getting the film we’re getting in 2020, or would the state of the franchise be completely different?

Shawn Stevenson is a nutritionist and the host of the top rated health podcast The Model Health Show. He is also the author of the best-selling book Sleep Smarter: 21 Essential Strategies to Sleep Your Way to A Better Body, Better Health, and Bigger Success.
Bestselling author and health podcaster Shawn Stevenson is our special guest host today in Episode 980 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.” Today we have a special LLVLC Classic episode featuring Shawn Stevenson. Most people who get into the health community tend to find their way to improved nutrition and lifestyle choices as a direct result of some physical ailment they or someone they love have personally experienced. And that certainly describes bestselling author and podcaster Shawn Stevenson who was told by conventional medicine in his early twenties that there was nothing they could do about what was described as an “incurable” spinal condition known as degenerative disc disease. This didn’t sit well with Shawn and that began him on his own search for self-discovery about what was happening to his body and health which helped him heal his body and ignite within him a love and desire to help others. Now he’s the host of the hit health podcast called “The Model Health Show” where he shares his unique ability to whittle down complex health topics into practical, bite-sized chunks for people to embrace and apply in their own lives. One area of special interest to Shawn is sleep and he’s written a book about it called Sleep Smarter: 21 Proven Tips to Sleep Your Way To a Better Body, Better Health and Bigger Success. Listen in as Jimmy and Shawn share about the behind-the-scenes of health podcasting, why a low-carb diet is perhaps the optimal nutritional approach for most people, the road to health that he traveled, the link between sleep and health, why we crave carbs when we’ve been sleep deprived, how weight gain is directly attributed to poor sleep quality, and so much more. Do you have a similar, intentional, thought-out morning routine to start each day? Or do you tend to wing it, seeing success as managing to leave the house more or less on time with your shoes on more or less the correct feet? In this week's podcast we look at some ways to being an energising and health boosting morning routine into your daily habits. Until my mid-twenties I never realised you could get up earlier than you “had to”. I had it down to a fine art. I worked out exactly how much time I needed to get up, get dressed, and get out the house to where I needed to be. Since being a kid I had assumed that “rush” was the default setting for the morning. My outlook only changed when I stopped to consider the potential locked up in the early morning. It turns out, an intentional morning routine can make a huge difference. There are elements of design that you can bring into a morning routine to truly thrive. That strain and stress is happy to prevail if we let it. In the show I unpack some tools to help create a morning routine that works for you. I don't want to give you any “shoulds” or pretend that your circumstances are the same as mine. Rather, the idea of this episode is to give some guide to help you think about your own situation. You'll see how you can get back some control; to put your health back at the centre, and have something compelling to get up for each morning. A Good Morning Routine Starts the Night Before Slow down into your bedtime. Develop patterns and habits of relaxation. Make the bedroom a cosy environment without too much stimulation and busyness. Check out Shawn Stevenson's book, Sleep Smarter: 21 Essential Strategies to Sleep Your Way to A Better Body, Better Health, and Bigger Success. It's full of ideas on how to get better quality sleep and the benefits of doing so. Also I put together a helpful little resource guide with some of the tools I use to create and sustain my energy through the day. Over to You Do you have any tricks of your own for starting the day on the right foot? Please leave your response in the comments below. Support the Podcast and get bonus extras:

I met Shawn Stevenson at Tropical Think Tank in February of 2017 and his talk was phenomenal. We had a few exchanges while we were there but I wanted to have him on the show to dive deeper into some of his work. Shawn is the author Sleep Smarter: 21 Essential Strategies to Sleep Your Way to a Better Body, Better Health, and Bigger Success and if you've been listening to my show for a while you know that I'm definitely into the idea of how sleep can affect your personal productivity. Some of the highlights from our conversation include: Why sleep is such a hot topic these days and what goes on during sleep that has such an impact on us The controversy that surrounds some of the newer research surrounding sleep (and health in general) Why getting sun and daylight on your skin is one of the most important things you can do - and why it's harmful if you're not taking time to do it Relevant Links: http://sleepsmarterbook.com/ (Sleep Smarter by Shawn Stevenson) https://productivityist.com/podcast-michael-breus/ (The Power of When with Dr. Michael Breus | The Productivityist Podcast) https://t.co/5b1BfDFjF7 (The Model Health Show) https://twitter.com/ShawnModel (Shawn Stevenson | Twitter) https://www.instagram.com/shawnmodel (Shawn Stevenson | Instagram) I had a great time speaking with Shawn on this episode. If you're not sleeping well enough, you're not as successful as you could be. We've been where you are now: Tired all the time because we let our business drive crowd good sleep right out of our lives. Taking a little more time at the end of the day for yourself because the day was so long and hectic. Getting out of a sleep rhythm because of work demands. But we can help you solve the problem, and solving the problem will make you more successful. Your time asleep is almost as valuable to your success as your time awake. Listen to this episode if any of the following are true for you. I can say for me that every one of these has been a problem at some point. Collectively, they'll kill you slowly. You have too much on your mind to sleep well. Your bedroom isn't a sleep sanctuary free of electronics and distractions. Too much light filters into your room. Noises wake you up at night. You don't give yourself a bedtime and go to sleep at wildly fluctuating times. You sleep in a warm bedroom. You've got no bedtime ritual. For us, it took career changes and other habitual life changes, but we, and many of our clients, now recognize good sleep as the lynchpin of success. After implementing the advice we're about to give you, I wake up before dawn every morning ready for success. My clients have seen similar results. If you wake up at night consistently and feel driven to work, this episode's for you. If you sleep less than 7.5 hours every night, listen up. And if you want more success and don't feel like you know how to get it, click play on the player above. Good sleep is the secret to success. Roar like a lion, men, and sleep like one too. Listen to this episode to hear Bill and me discuss sleeping better for success and more: The success one of our clients found that all started with better sleep. Why and how sleep deprivation impairs you. The 7 causes of poor sleep we see most often. Why lack of sleep might be triggering your lack of confidence or pessimism. How to create a “sleep and sex sanctuary” in your bedroom. One reason why you shouldn't emulate Arnold Schwarzenegger. How drinking yourself to sleep will keep you up all night. The thing you should do every day to sleep better at night. Books and resources mentioned in this episode: Some of the following links are affiliate links. “A good night of sleep starts the moment you wake up in the morning.”Shawn StevensonYou cannot underestimate the value of an incredible night's sleep. On the rare occasion I awake from 8 hours of dead to the world slumber, everything is better. I am more present, alert and productive. The quality of my interactions with family and friends is significantly enhanced. Colors are brighter. My mood is sunnier. And physically, I feel amazing. So I can't help but wonder:what would my life be like if I could sleep that well every night?Intellectually, we all know sleep is super important. But most — including myself — fail to acknowledge just how crucial sleep is to every aspect of our daily lives. Traditionally, sleep is the first thing I compromise when I get busy.Sleep is for whimps! But I've completely changed my tune on this issue. As I age, achieving optimal sleep quality has become increasingly elusive. And I have become more attuned to the extent to which my day is negatively impacted by sub-optimal sleep. So I have recently committed to experimenting with a number of techniques and strategies (some obvious, some not) to improve what I now understand and appreciate is absolutely essential to living a balanced, healthy and optimally productive life.I'm happy to say it's working. This is a long way of saying that I have been thinking alot about sleep lately. So I'm excited to share this conversation on the subject with sleep expert Shawn Stevenson. A wellness evangelist and host of the Model Health Show podcast, Shawn also recently authored Sleep Smarter: 21 Essential Strategies to Sleep Your Way to A Better Body, Better Health, and Bigger Success*.I had a great time on Shawn's podcast about a year ago (click here to listen), so it was fun to explore his compelling personal journey with wellness and dive deep into the subject of sleep. Specific topics include:* Shawn's struggles with health & depression* hitting rock bottom as a catalyst for change* environmental epigenetics* strategies to combat preventable illnesses* the effects of sleep on your daily life* sleep as a force multiplier* the relationship between cortisol & melatonin* the benefits of early morning activities on cortisol levels* sleep & temperature regulation* optimizing cortisol rhythm through light therapy* sex & sleep* the health impact of sleep deprivation* magnesium & melatonin supplements* addressing chronic insomniaShawn is a great guy with a velvety voice custom made for podcasting. But more importantly, this conversation is packed with practical advice, powerful tools and helpful information that will enhance your appreciation for sleep and just might impact your daily life experience profoundly. So pay attention. Take notes. And enjoy.Peace + Plants,Listen & Subscribe on iTunes | Soundcloud | StitcherCheck out our new online course: See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Here’s a fresh thought for fixing or just strengthening your marriage this year: try improving your sleep quality. Really? Yes, really. In this episode of our marriage podcast, we interview Shawn Stevens. He is a best-selling author and the creator of the Model Health Show, currently the #1 Nutrition and Fitness podcast in the world on iTunes. [youtube id="zAM6iPk53m8"] Watch the video for the full interview. I invited Shawn for an interview because I wanted him to help us understand how we can take care of our marriages by taking care of our sleep. As Shawn says at the start, “When you’re tired, your best friend can look like your worst enemy!” The Case For Sleep In the interview, we discuss various research articles that identify the impact of reduced sleep. The bottom line is, when you don’t get enough sleep, you limit your brain’s ability to help you relate to others. Sleep is the only state we experience that helps to rebuild our bodies and minds. Yet, it’s often the first thing we reduce when we begin to feel overloaded. Ironically, we reduce one part of our daily lives we need the most. Reduced sleep affects men and women different. For men, poor sleep predicts more negative ratings of spousal interactions the next day. For women, negative daytime interactions take away from sleep that night. You can imagine how quickly a destructive cycle can form from this interaction. Clearly, there is a well-established link between relationship quality and sleep quality. Sleep and Stress Sleep is also an important part of stress regulation. Marriage is a great source of stress relief but Shawn identifies how critical sleep is as part of managing stress. But the challenge is that stress makes for poor sleep and poor sleep makes for more feelings of stress. How does a person break out of this cycle? Strategies for Improving Sleep Quality One of the critical take-home lessons from this interview is the importance of exercising in the morning. This has a huge impact on the amount of time spent in the deepest (and most restorative) stage of sleep. Exercising at night, or late in the evening, is counterproductive to being healthy. You might be exercising, but you’re eroding the restorative potential of your sleep. Another critical take away is to observe a caffeine curfew. Caffeine has a half-life of about eight hours (depending on your metabolism). Consequently, Shawn’s recommendation is that there be no caffeine intake after 2 PM in the afternoon. Intake after that time is going to impact your body’s ability to get the quality of sleep it needs. Shawn also notes the importance of moderating body temperature. Running our house too warm, especially at nights in the bedroom, takes away from sleep quality. The research recommends running one’s bedroom temperature between 60 to 68 F (16 to 20 C) is ideal. There’s a side-benefit to a cooler room: more cuddling! That can’t but help the marriage too, right? Finally, we discuss the impact of sexuality on our sleep quality. The body releases a wonderful cocktail of hormones following orgasm with one’s spouse. Those hormones promote deeper and more restful sleep as well as reducing the impact of stress on our bodies. More from Shawn Stevenson Be sure to check out Shawn’s website, and podcast to learn more about how you can improve your health and fitness. As well, be sure to pick up a copy of Shawn’s book, Sleep Smarter: 21 Proven Tips to Sleep Your Way To a Better Body, Better Health and Bigger Success. I have read his book and highly recommend it. It is very digestible, a great read, and really takes you through many actionable ways that you can start improving your sleep tonight.
