Episode 188: Show Notes. The talent organization is often seen as a business within a business, but sometimes it is seen more as an expense than a massive contributor to the bottom line. Today we are joined by Liberty Mutual's Shawn Tubman, who is the head of talent acquisition, and Loralie Thostenson the SVP, technology talent officer. Our guests provide insight into how the operation of the huge talent organization at Liberty Mutual is structured before we discuss how the talent team is seen as an expense center, and how to put into dollars and cents how it is profitable. Tuning in you'll hear about the transactional lens and the global lens through which Shawn sees ROI for talent processes, as well as the pros and cons of the qualitative approach versus the quantitative approach to proselytizing the value of HR to an organization. Later we talk the very important role of strategy in HR, how our guests determine what specific things a talent organization needs to do to meet the needs of a business, how understanding these needs informs the process of decision making, and why you should ask “A year from now, what are we going to regret not doing?” Listen in today to find out how to balance trying to reach a high headcount goal while also being strategic, the importance of scheduling time for strategizing, and Shawn and Loralie's advice on how to build your career and be deliberate about your own growth. Key Points From This Episode: How Shawn Tubman has managed to stay at Liberty Mutual for so many years. Tweetables: “You can't put a price on making the best hire because one hire could really change and shape an organization.” — Shawn Tubman [0:13:46] “‘Nothing really happens in an organization until you make a sale,' right? You've got to make the sale and then everything comes after it. — The thing that came to my mind was, ‘Nothing happens until you hire the person that makes the sale.'” — Shawn Tubman [0:14:17] “I think one way of thinking about it is data often times is your ‘what' and the anecdote is the ‘why'. Having the ‘what' and the ‘why' paired together on any topic really makes the connection and gives the whole picture.” — Loralie Thostenson [0:17:50] “There is a balance between the transactional piece of recruitment, which is working with a hiring manager to fill a singular job and then having that overarching strategic approach. I don't think one could live without the other.” — Shawn Tubman [0:22:56] “A well-thought-out strategy, it has to be part of all recruitment organizations, whether that exists on the individual recruiter desk or whether it exists on the leader level for a large organization. Time and intentionality has to be spent in defining that strategy.” — Shawn Tubman [0:23:51] “Make sure that you always understand how you're adding value to the business regardless of what level talent role that you're at.” — Loralie Thostenson [0:30:46] Links Mentioned in Today's Episode: Shawn Tubman Loralie Thostenson Liberty Mutual Hired Talk Talent to Me

Since the beginning, life was particularly harsh with Shawn Harper; physically abused by his father, documented with four or five learning disabilities, kicked out of two schools for disciplinary issues, he was told not to play football because of his knee issues, and the list goes on. "Shawn, you're a loser, you're a failure, you're dumb, stupid" - he grew up hearing those kinds of things. Until one day, after receiving a phone call from a Junior College in Iowa, he told himself, "Yes, I don't have the education nor the elements needed to be successful, but I can win." Visiting us today is the inspiring Shawn Harper, former NFL, and NFL Europe player. He is a CEO, an investor, a husband, a father, an author, and a keynote speaker. Would you believe me if I told you that you are not in charge of your life? Most people won't believe this. But, if you take the time to look at your daily activities, you'll find that how we think and feel are products of the subconscious mind that is at work ninety-five percent of the time. Most of these thoughts and programs in the subconscious hold us back from really doing and being the best version of ourselves - personal or business-wise. We discuss this in detail in the first of the three-part series with Shawn Feurer. He gives us insight into the knowing-doing gap and how the subconscious plays a huge role in this gap. Shawn also shares the common paradigms that contractors and tradies have. He then challenges the listeners of this podcast episode to think big and start identifying what holds you back from accomplishing the big stuff. Tune in to this episode. In this episode, Apolonia Rockwell talks with Shawn M. Galloway, the President and Chief Operating Officer of ProAct Safety. Shawn is also an author, keynote speaker, consultant, and advisor. Topics that Shawn and Apolonia discuss in this episode: * How Shawn and his business partner started thinking about safety culture in 1986 after the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster and the Chernobyl nuclear accident. * The need for safety professionals to continuously mature our thinking around what is and isn't excellence in safety. In other words, why we should always challenge our thinking around safety. * What is our strategy around safety culture? What does success look like? What direction are we headed? * How, sometimes, the best safety consulting isn’t about just safety consulting—it’s about talking about other factors related to a company’s business. Instead, you should look at processes, systems, and a company’s overall strategy for growth. * An indicator of leadership capability for the CEO of a company to ask themself and their team: If we're not great at something as important as safety, what else aren't we good at? bengreenfieldfitness.com/energyformula If there's anything people say they want more of these days...it's energy. The world around us continually requires more from us while we give less and less thought to our long-term health. This distracted and overwhelmed mindset has landed us squarely in survival mode, depriving us of the necessary steps to create lasting, sustained energy. The truth is most of us are so exhausted and don't know how to find the energy to live our best lives. My friend Shawn Wells just put the finishing touches on his new book The ENERGY Formula: Six Life Changing Ingredients to Unleash Your Limitless Potential... ...which covers keto, Paleo, biohacking, stoicism, supplements, CBD, nootropics, MCTs, infrared saunas, cold plunges, how to create a sleep fortress, circadian rhythm, and much more. With about 60 full-color diagrams and over 100 scientific citations, Shawn gives you the knowledge you will not find anywhere else, including "Formulator's Corners" in every chapter that cover doses, brands, and forms of supplements you need to be taking as well as "Resource Hacks" that tell you the products, devices, apps, and more to use. Developed by biochemist, dietitian, sports nutritionist, and formulation scientist Shawn Wells after surviving a series of torturous health battles, this pivotal and groundbreaking book is the product of meticulous and persistent research to find solutions to his personal and painful experiences—paired with two decades of legitimate clinical and scientific expertise. Shawn previously joined me on the podcast episode "The Nitty-Gritty Underground World of Supplement Ingredients, Sports Nutrition Frankenfuels, Illegally Laced Compounds & More.," and he's been studying up on plenty more since that show, so prepare for a wild ride on today's podcast. Shawn, who is an MPH, LDN, RD, CISSN, FISSN, is a leading nutritional biochemist and expert on health optimization. He has formulated over 500 supplements, foods, beverages, and cosmeceuticals, has patented 10 novel ingredients, and is now known as the Ingredientologist—the scientist of ingredients. Formerly a chief clinical dietitian with over a decade of clinical experience, he has counseled thousands of people on natural health solutions such as keto, paleo, fasting, and supplements. He has also personally overcome various health issues including Epstein-Barr virus, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, depression, insomnia, obesity, and a pituitary tumor. As a world-renowned thought leader on mitochondrial health, he has been paid to speak on five different continents. His insights have been prominently featured in documentaries, nationally syndicated radio programs, and regularly on morning television. Shawn's expertise can help any health-conscious individual to better manage stress and experience higher performance and more energy through utilizing his practical research-backed solutions. Food is complicated. It's a key controller of our state of health or disease. It's a social centerpiece for the most important moments of our lives. It's the building blocks that creates our brain, enabling us to have thoughts, feelings, and emotions. It's the very stuff that makes up our bodies and what we see looking back at us in the mirror. Food isn't just food—it's the thing that makes us who we are. So why does figuring out what to eat feel so overwhelming? On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host Dhru talks to Shawn Stevenson, the author of the international bestselling book Sleep Smarter and creator of The Model Health Show, one of the top health podcasts in the world. A graduate of the University of Missouri–St. Louis, Shawn studied business, biology, and nutritional science, and went on to found Advanced Integrative Health Alliance, a company that provides wellness services for individuals and organizations worldwide. Shawn has been featured in Forbes, Fast Company, The New York Times, Muscle & Fitness, ESPN, and many other major media outlets. He is also an in-demand keynote speaker for numerous organizations, universities, and conferences. In this episode, Dhru and Shawn dive deep into the topic of fat and why body fat is not really the culprit it’s been made out to be, how our bodies actually “burn” body-fat, and the key hormones, enzymes, and nutrients involved in this process. They talk about the surprising way that our gut bacteria controls our body weight, and the research on how food affects our relationships. They also discuss how we have an epidemic of food insecurity and health disparities in our world today, the startling data around food inequality, and what we can actually do to help fix it. In this episode, we dive into: -What fat really is and why it’s so important to our survival (6:14) -How your microbiome determines your body composition (18:10) -How the misconstrued science of calories has contributed to growing diet struggles (27:13)-How our psychology impacts what food does to us (37:36)-How stress impacts our metabolic health (51:16)-Fat loss and the importance of diversity of our gut microbiome (52:53) -How nutrition affects our relationships, conflict resolution, and even aggressive behavior (1:14:47)-How Shawn overcame degenerative disc disease (1:22:41) -How our social structures determine our food choices (1:33:38) -The most powerful agent of change (1:47:37) For more on Shawn Stevenson you can follow him on Instagram @ShawnModel, on Facebook @TheModelHealthShow, on Twitter @ShawnModel, on YouTube @TheShawnModel, and through his website https://themodelhealthshow.com//. In this episode I had the honor of speaking with Shawn Stevenson, creator and host of The Model Health Show, which was featured as the number one health podcast in the United States with millions of listener downloads each year. With the myriad of challenges we’ve all faced this year thanks to COVID-19, there’s a greater need than ever before to return to the basics of health and wellness, particularly regarding what we eat on a day-to-day basis. In short, we have a conversation on the most fundamental must-knows that we can use to truly take our health back. Listen in as Shawn shares how eating the right foods can totally transform your body and mind, why he considers sleep as the most important factor to one’s health (even above nutrition and exercise), common nutrition myths, why you need to pay more attention to your gut health if you want to burn more body fat, why it’s time to cease the “war on fat”, and what most people fail to see when it comes to maximizing your health and wellness amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The way Shawn was able to hustle - literally hustle - for the opportunity to work with some of the world’s most influential cocktail ambassadors, like Jeffrey Morganthaler and Philip Duff. What Canada has to offer on the cocktail front - highlighting some of the people, places, and flavors featured in Great Northern Cocktails to show all of us quarantined Americans what we’re missing out on north of the border. How to plan your next vacation to the great white north so that you’re certain to strategically hit the best food and drink venues that each city has to offer. What Shawn talks about on his own awesome podcast, The Post Shift Podcast. And much, much more.

From to to for stem cell injections that would be illegal in the USA, it seems that stem cells are the hot new arrival on the recovery and anti-aging scene. I distinctly recall my first experience with injecting cells into the human body. I was a young, bright-eyed hip and knee surgical salesman, and the company I worked for at the time (Biomet) had just developed a post-surgical procedure called Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP). This PRP process involved collecting and then centrifuging a patient's blood to separate the platelet-poor plasma and red blood cells. The platelets are concentrated about five-fold, and then re-injected into the wound site to speed up healing. I later thought this was such a cool process for other issues, like knee and elbow pain, that I partnered with a physician to purchase a PRP machine for treating the athletes and clients who I worked with, many of whom had uncanny and "miraculous" injury and inflammation reversals. But compared to PRP, stem cells are a whole new animal, and in this podcast with my guest , we dive into the legality, the conflicts, the long-term health the potential for doping, the alternatives, the costs and much more. Shawn (pictured right) is a bestselling author and creator of The Model Health Show, which is often featured as the #1 Health podcast in the country on iTunes. A graduate of The University of Missouri - St. Louis, Shawn studied biology and kinesiology, and went on to be the founder of Advanced Integrative Health Alliance, a company that provides wellness services for individuals and organizations worldwide. Shawn has been featured in Men's Health magazine, Entrepreneur magazine, ESPN, FOX News, and many other media outlets. During our discussion, you'll discover: -The crazy story of how Shawn's hip broke while he was running, and the broken medical system that nearly destroyed his entire gut while fixing his hip... -How Shawn regenerated his spine, which doctor's told him was "the spine of an 80 year old man"... -The four different types of stem cells, and which ones work best for killing pain, healing injuries and decreasing inflammation... -The two surprising ways you can find and harvest stem cells without using embryos... -How new human body parts can literally be regrown after being injured... -How Shawn skipped any blood centrifuging, bone marrow injections or stem cell therapies and instead used specific foods to increase stem cell growth in his own joints... -The exact ingredients of Shawn's most potent medicinal tea recipe... -Why both Ben and Shawn stuff mushrooms into vodka bottles... -And much more! My guest in today's podcast, Shawn Wells, MPH, RD, CISSN, has probably forgotten more about supplements than most people will ever know. His brain contains an extremely unique blend of time spent in the science trenches and a formal education in the fields of performance nutrition and supplementation. Shawn attended UNC-Chapel Hill, earning a Master’s degree in Nutrition and minor in Exercise Science. His education also includes credentials of Registered Dietitian, Certified Sport Nutritionist (CISSN), and board member of the ISSN. His role as CEO of Zone Halo Research, a consulting group for supplement formulations, and CSO of Biotrust, along with extensive experience in formulating supplements for big companies (likely some of the ones you’ve tried in the past few years) distinguish him as an expert in sports nutrition and supplementation. If you’re into supplements, you will love this interview with Shawn Wells. We discuss: -How Shawn went from being a practicing Chief Clinical Dietitian to being in the thick of the supplement industry, and some of the most helpful books he read along the way... -The most important factors that differentiate a high-quality supplement manufacturer from a low-quality one... -The deceptive practice of "fairy-dusting" and why many, many supplement manufacturers do it... -How to know if taking different supplements together (e.g. stacking) can be dangerous, or on the flipside, more efficacious than taking one at a time... -Why a supplement can rapidly degrade as soon as you put it into your refrigerator or pantry... -Why everything from solubility to flavor additives can make or break the absorption and efficacy of supplements like whey protein... -Why you could be getting 600mg of caffeine (6 cups of coffee!) in an average "energy" supplement that says it only has 100mg... -The surprising development that Shawn things is the next big thing in the world of supplements and nutrition... -And much more!
