POPULARITY
Roll-up, roll-up for the biggest tent of all! We're launching into 2025 with a very special guest, Imogen West-Knights, and an absolutely vast cursed object, containing lots of smaller ones. That's right, we're turning the clock back a full quarter of a century to revisit the universal mockery, dodgy sponsors, New Labour hubris, sweet childhood memories, general hilarity, bomb threats and national self-loathing that all came messily, hilariously together to fill the Millennium Dome. At the time, it was viewed as the white elephant that would stomp over all other white elephants, the most embarrassing of political failures – but Imogen's obsessive reporting on the Dome's history has turned up a more interesting verdict altogether. Was this the ultimate symbol of the early Blair years, for better and worse? What was the Dome Minister's deep connection to the 1951 Festival of Britain? What was it actually like to visit the Dome as a child in 2000? Should we all be a bit less cynical about massive projects like this? Just how tacky was it in the end? And what was the true spirit of the Willennium - sorry, millennium? Thanks so much to the brilliant Imogen West-Knights for sharing her worrying level of expertise on the Dome with us – you can read her 2020 Guardian Long Read on the Dome here. And buy her excellent debut novel Deep Down here. She is on BlueSky @ImogenWK. Big thanks to Cursed Objects listener Tilly Hawkins for also suggesting the 'Been there, DOME that' badge for our upcoming installation at the Peltz, and to H.O.M.E for providing a studio - check them out if you're a creative looking for a space to work in London. This week on End Credits, we're going back to the turn of the millennium, or do we mean the Willennium? For those of you who remember the turn of the century have we got a treat for you! Remember 1999? A lot of great movies came out that year, and some people think that it might be the one of the best for the breadth and variety of projects, so this week. we'll draft them! This Wednesday, July 17, at 3 pm, Adam A. Donaldson, Tim Phillips, Candice Lepage and Peter Salmon will discuss: The 1999 Movie Draft. Now halfway to episode #400, we pause to hold a very special movie draft. Exactly 25 years ago, we were halfway through what's come to be known in some quarters as the "Best Movie Year Ever". This week, the whole gang is here to draft the great films of that year, from a cyberspace dystopia to a Shakespeare comedy in high school to the mockumentary about a scary witch in the forests of Maryland. This week, we're going to party like it's... you-know-what. Cue the Prince! End Credits is on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca Wednesday at 3 pm.
The Martin Duprass (@themartinduprass) return to the show to chat about the year that birthed the dawn of the Willennium, 1999. They talk about the wildness of the Y2K era. Plus, lotta good movies came out that year. More importatnly: The Martin Dupras have done a remake of Kevin Smith's 1999 film Dogma based on their memories of the movie having not seeing it for a while. It's a wild ride. We've all got stories about the strangers we've lived by, and Ann, Meredith, and Hillary are no exception. In that spirit, we're recounting tales about neighbors, good and bad (but let's be real, they're mostly bad). We discuss unexpected political friction, neighborhood creeps, the importance of locking your doors, neighborly situations we wish we'd handled differently, and some friendly arson. Plus, it turns out that Hillary is a road trip dad, while Meredith continues to discover new and exciting health issues to deal with. And see if you can guess which host makes the following statement: “I like to lick toilets.”TSHE Recommends: The RetrievalsConnect with the show! This is your show, too. As the new Willennium approaches, we begin to wind down our pastel colours and enormous suits, let the pop-punk and ska CDs slowly exit rotation, and gradually phrase out our use of the phrase "it is currently the nineteen-nineties". Before the 20th century would completely close out, however, video games managed one final burst of innovation, and Tommy, Ben and Adam are here to recount and record for the benefit of future generations. Wicky-wild indeed! On this episode, we expand our genre of Shiterion films to a "steampunk, hip-hop, western". This movie and it's Men In Black director, tried to ride the late 90s wave into the Willennium, but it ended up being left in the dust. Kevin Kline and Salma Hayek made for great cast mates, but when a movie relies slowly on gadgets and gizmos, there's bound to be a few screws loose. But hey! On this week's episode, we're looking at the last 3 presidential eras - those of Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama! And specifically, who was best for pop culture? Did Tom Hanks do his best work under Clinton, Bush, or Obama? When was Green Day most successful? Was Will Smith better off before the pre-Willennium days? Listen this week for a winner-take-all debate where we determine the best and worst presidents of the last 24 years, purely through the pop culture their eras inspired!

Winston Noel from the great podcast Hear Me Out stops by to talk about comic book cartoons of the ‘90s and today. We cover everything from X-Men to Young Justice, and get ready to hear the old Fantastic Four theme like you’ve never heard it before: a semi-competent a cappella performance by improv comedians! Winston’s appearance also brings out the music fiends in Matt and Brett, so get ready to hear more about Oasis and Sheryl Crow than you have all week. Or maybe all year? Check out Winston’s podcast Hear Me Out, where he and co-host Alden Ford defend the most indefensible songs known to mankind. You can also follow him on Twitter @WinstonNoel and see him perform with the improv group Grandma’s Ashes every Saturday night at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York City. Next week’s reading is Superman: Secret Identity from DC Comics by Kurt Busiek and Stuart Immonen. You can purchase a new printing of this modern classic on Amazon or get a digital download on Comixology. Music: “Can’t Cry Anymore” by Sheryl Crow "Winston Noel / At the Turn of The Willennium" originally appeared at http://mattandbrettlovecomics.com/podcast/2013/turn-of-the-willennium.html
