It's October 1910. An explosion destroys the Los Angeles Times Building. Twenty people are killed, and many more are badly injured. With a rise in domestic terrorism, bombs have been detonating across the United States, as war between the unions and non-unions rages on. Famed private detective William J Burns is hired to find the arsonists. The New York Times once called him “the only detective of genius whom the country has produced.” What follows is an investigation that takes him across The States, following shady characters with murder on their minds. Will Burns be able to find the bombers before they strike again, or will this be the case that finally bests the celebrated private investigator? To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the China in the World podcast, Carnegie China is launching a series of lookback episodes, using clips from previous interviews to put current international issues in context. For the first episode in this series, the podcast looks back on ten years of U.S.-China diplomacy following the postponement of U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken's planned visit to China in early 2023.The China in the World podcast has spanned three U.S. administrations and covered several historic bilateral meetings, from Obama and Xi's summit in Sunnylands, California in June 2013 to Trump and Xi's meeting at Mar-a-Lago in April 2017. This episode gives a glimpse into the evolution of U.S.-China relations during a pivotal decade and sheds light on what can be accomplished during high-level meetings–what went right and what went wrong during past meetings. The episode features clips from Paul Haenle's interviews with over 20 American, Chinese, and international experts on foreign affairs: Stephen J. Hadley, former U.S. National Security Advisor, Xie Tao, Dean of the School of International Relations at Beijing Foreign Studies University, Yan Xuetong, Dean of the Institute of International Relations at Tsinghua University, Randall Schriver, former Assistant Secretary of Defense for Indo-Pacific Security Affairs, Evan Medeiros, Professor at Georgetown University and former advisor to President Obama, Zhao Hai, research fellow at the National Strategy Institute at Tsinghua University, Jia Dazhong, professor at the School of International Studies at Peking University, Ashley Tellis, senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment, Danny Russel, former special assistant to President Obama and senior director for Asian Affairs on the National Security Council, Jake Sullivan, National Security Advisor and former senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment, Cui Liru, former president of the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, Doug Paal, former vice president for studies at the Carnegie Endowment, Graham Allison, Director of the Belfer Center at the Harvard Kennedy School, William J. Burns, CIA Director and former President of the Carnegie Endowment, Susan Thornton, former Assistant Secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs at the Department of State, Evan Feigenbaum, Vice President for studies at the Carnegie Endowment, Jie Dalei, associate professor at the School of International Studies at Peking University, Da Wei, director of the Center for International Security and Strategy at Tsinghua University, Tong Zhao, senior fellow at Carnegie China, and Hoang Thi Ha, senior fellow at the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute.

The CIA aka Central Intelligence Agency is one of many aspects of the American Intelligence community of the United States Government. This agency has been around for seventy-five years. It was first established by President Harry S. Truman when he signed into law the National Security Act of 1947 on July 26th, 1947. The CIA always will have five top priorities: counterterrorism, nonproliferation of nuclear & other weapons of mass destruction, alerting American leaders of significant foreign soil events, counter intelligence, and cyber intelligence. Since March 19th, 2021 William J. Burns has been the director of the Central Intelligence Agency. He has so far received nothing but high praise because of how great of a job he is doing as director of CIA. William J. In this episode i cover my years of following the Libertarian Party, & how i believe their ideas are by far, better than the other two, but they continue to fail in focusing on the ties between monopolies, bankers, & government. I ask, are they purposely being led astray, or have they just failed to educate themselves on the way our system really works? On day one, Libertarians learn taxation is theft, & the govt. is inefficient, & ineffective, but are any of the leaders from the Party informing them that corporate funded NGO's & tax exempt organizations are behind much of the liberty killing legislation that stamps out free market competition? Do they know groups like the Council On Foreign Relations have been behind nearly every bad foreign policy measure since WW1? Do they know that the same CFR, Atlantic Council, & Aspen Institute types are in every single presidential administration? Is it just a club, or are Libertarians serious about fighting the enemies of freedom? Do they not understand GovtCorp is moving towards a global private public partnership, & The Great Reset is being pushed by Corporatists, as well as the (S)tate? I ask all these tough questions, & more as we dive down the rabbit hole, far beyond the mainstream. Thank you

Cheers, & blessings.

Ambassador Burns retired from the U.S. Foreign Service in 2014 after a 33-year diplomatic career. Hailed as an “American diplomatic legend” by Secretary of State John Kerry, he holds the highest rank in the Foreign Service, Career Ambassador, and is only the second serving career diplomat in history to become deputy secretary of state. Ambassador Burns is the author of an acclaimed new book, The Back Channel: A Memoir of American Diplomacy and the Case for Its Renewal, which Henry Kissinger called “an incisive and sorely needed case for the revitalization of diplomacy — what Burns wisely describes as our ‘tool of first resort.’”

William J. Burns is widely acknowledged as a diplomatic legend, with the experience to match. He spearheaded talks that resulted in the elimination of Libya's illicit weapons program, served as the U.S. ambassador to Russia and, most famously, initiated the opening of back channels that led to the historic Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action regarding Iran's nuclear program. He is only the second career diplomat to hold the office of deputy secretary of state. After serving under Hillary Clinton, he was widely acknowledged to be on Clinton's short list for secretary of state. Burns is known for being trusted by politicians on both sides of the aisle for his no-nonsense, can-do attitude. In his new book, The Back Channel: A Memoir of American Diplomacy and the Case for Its Renewal, Burns tells the story of a lifetime. From the aftermath of 9/11, the Iran nuclear deal and everything in between, Burns gives us a glimpse into the inner workings of the State Department under five separate presidencies. Over the course of more than three decades as an American diplomat, William J. Burns played a central role in the most consequential diplomatic episodes of his time—from the bloodless end of the Cold War to the collapse of post–Cold War relations with Putin’s Russia, from post–9/11 tumult in the Middle East to the secret nuclear talks with Iran. In The Back Channel, Burns recounts, with novelistic detail and incisive analysis, some of the seminal moments of his career. Drawing on a trove of newly declassified cables and memos, he gives readers a rare inside look at American diplomacy in action. His dispatches from war-torn Chechnya and Qaddafi’s bizarre camp in the Libyan desert and his warnings of the “Perfect Storm” that would be unleashed by the Iraq War will reshape our understanding of history—and inform the policy debates of the future. Burns sketches the contours of effective American leadership in a world that resembles neither the zero-sum Cold War contest of his early years as a diplomat nor the “unipolar moment” of American primacy that followed.Ultimately, The Back Channel is an eloquent, deeply informed, and timely story of a life spent in service of American interests abroad. It is also a powerful reminder, in a time of great turmoil, of the enduring importance of diplomacy.
