Chris Powers hiked from the Northern Terminus to the Natural Bridge area as part of attempting a longer thru hike of the Sheltowee Trace Trail. We talk about what led to him deciding to leave the trail and lessons he learned along the way. We get into planning and logistics (gear, camping, food and water), the hard reality of road walking and its impact on his hike, and the joy found in photography along the trail. We also discuss some of the ways being a climber can help with both planning and executing a hike. This week, we cover 4 battles as the war winds down. We start in Virginia with the battle of Waynesboro on March 2nd, 1865 where Brigadier General George Custer and his troops defeat Lt. General John Bell Hood and eliminate his army. Hood would not see the battlefield for the rest of his career. Next, we head to Florida on March 6th with the battle of Natural Bridge. A Confederate force tries to stop the Yankee's from crossing the bridge. For the last two battles of the episode, we go back to the Carolinas Campaign at the battles of Wyse Fork and Monroe's Crossroads, where Sherman continues his trek through the states to meet up with Grant up north. On today's episode, I talk to musician Peyton Pinkerton. Originally from Pleasantville, New York, Peyton formed New Radiant Storm King in 1990 while at Hampshire College. Over the next two decades, the band released nine albums on labels like Grass, Rainbow Quartz and Darla, and in 2010 played their final show. Peyton has also played and toured with Silver Jews, playing on perhaps their best album The Natural Bridge, as well as with the Pernice Brothers. As a solo artist, Peyton has released Rapid Cycler and a self-titled album on Darla, and his last album Ex Tomorrow was released in 2019, and folks, it's a delight! The Sun is a major figure in Cherokee mythology; the world depends upon her light and warmth, but is at the mercy of her brutal heat when she is slighted by her brother, the Moon. In this story, recorded from the Eastern Band of Cherokee in the late 19th century, a plan to stop the Sun from burning the world leads to the death of her daughter, and a plan to bring her back from the Ghost Country. Common characters to Native American mythology including the Great Horned Serpent appear in a tale with strong connections to the natural world and Cherokee history. Mary Kate Claytor is the Associate Director of Interpretation at the Frontier Culture Museum in Staunton, Virginia. After a bit of background about this unique living history museum, Mary Kate describes in detail wool production for a yeoman farmer in the 1600-1800's: starting with sheep shearing, wool washing, stale urine and lanolin, through to carding & combing, drop spindles & spinning wheels, historical & natural dyes, and finally ending on a fabric called linsey-woolsey. From there we move on to another category of historical clothing, buckskins. Mary Kate recounts learning how to hide tan while working at Natural Bridge's Monacan village. Then we switch from clothing to foodways by reflecting on both profound & disturbing experiences while taking part in hog slaughters & fowl processing. We end on hearing of how Mary Kate's historical hobbies connect her to her great-grandmother. Follow Mary Kate on Instagram & check out the Frontier Culture Museum. We are here at a pivotal moment in the United States ... our democracy and our rights to our privacy and long time freedoms are at stake with the coming election of 2022 We seem to be so lost in how to understand where we are going ..i think today Jess brought us back down to earth and really spoke about solutions. In my work in the last 25 years, I have had the opportunity to meet, protest, and to march with today's generation of powerful young voices who will lead us out of this disappointing era of small-minded political radicalism and racism. There is a time-honored phrase I have heard since marching against the Vietnam War: We are the ones we have been waiting for “ and that phrase perfectly reflects our times. when I think of today's 18- 35 year vote.... – these past three episodes have brought together honest conversations about women's rights, the core values of privacy that must be returned to all women, and how we must protect the way of life we thought we had in America... I ask myself today: Are we still a democracy? we all know what is at stake and we know that our vote can reverse the government's control over our bodies, our lives, and our futures.

Content warning: This episode contains discussions of sensitive topics like depression, sexual abuse, and suicide as explored in the music of The Mountain Goats and Silver Jews. MinnMax Contributor and all-around gentleman Joe Juba brought an album by one of his favorite artists to CrossFade! This episode might be the most we've ever delved into lyrics. The Mountain Goats' “Heretic Pride” and Silver Jews' “The Natural Bridge” are both albums that go heavy on storytelling, picking unique perspectives to set the scene and evoke specific times and places. In this episode, we talk about what makes John Darnielle's music so compelling, the legacy of David Berman, distinctive vocalists, OSTs we love even if we haven't consumed the media they're from, and much more thanks to questions straight from the MinnMax community!
