Han är övertygad om att alla hans problem kommer att försvinna om han får gifta sig med chefens dotter Klara. Maniskt shoppar han kläder och tar en droska till chefens galamiddag – övertygad om att han kommer att göra succé. Men Goljadkin är varken inbjuden eller önskad. Och det som skulle bli den första kvällen i ett helt nytt liv, slutar med brakskandal – och han slängs ut från festen.Det är på hemvägen, när han fylld av skam och självhat går längs kanalen som dubbelgångaren dyker upp, som en personifikation av de sidor hos sig själv han inte står ut med. Goljadkin bjuder hem honom, super till och ett besynnerligt tycke, nästan som kärlek, uppstår i ruset mellan de två männen. Men det dröjer inte länge förrän dubbelgångaren har tagit över Goljadkins arbete, lägenhet, umgänge och sociala status – medan kanslisten själv degraderats till en sjavig loser. Det slutar med att han måste läggas in på psyket.Även om dubbelgångartemat gjorde entré i litteraturen redan något decennium tidigare med böcker som Hoffmans ”Djävulsdrogen”, och Mary Shelleys ”Frankenstein”, så var det helt nytt för publiken att få följa en sinnesförvirrad person inifrån. Dostojevskij inspirerades av den mallade gotiska romanen, men hans mer egensinniga komposition slog an något som gjorde att snart sagt varje författare med anseende ville skriva en egen dubbelgångarberättelse. Poe, Stevenson, Dickens, Wilde, Conrad, du Maurier och Nabokov – alla har de gett sin version av temat. Så vad är det hos dubbelgångaren som attraherar egentligen? Inom den gotiska skräcktraditionen har man tolkat det som en viktoriansk ängslan för gränsöverskridanden, inte minst sexuella sådana. Den mörka andre är ett monster som uppstår när människan syndat mot Gud, moralen eller naturen, som doktor Frankenstein när han skapar liv ur död materia.I den traditionella skönlitteraturen har tolkningen istället kommit att präglas av Sigmund Freud. I sin essä ”Det kusliga” använder han Hoffmans dubbelgångare i novellen ”Sandmannen” som exempel på just det kusliga – något som är välbekant men ändå främmande. I dubbelgångaren känner du igen dig själv, men får samtidigt möjlighet att se dig själv utifrån, med andras blick, precis som Goljadkin. Och Freud satte tonen. Under dubbelgångarlitteraturens glansperiod blev de psykologiska läsningarna helt dominerande. Den andre skulle förstås som en rädsla för att det psykiskt förträngda kunde blottas, men kanske gav den läsningen inte hela bilden?I familjevåningen och salongen fanns inte plats för några låga begär [...] samtidigt som staden och gatan med sina lockande synder låg öppen.För om vi går tillbaka till Dostojevskij och skalar bort allt utanpåverk så handlar ju romanen om en man som vanäras socialt och går under. Om och om igen upprepas, i Bengt Samuelsons fina översättning, fraserna ”dra i smutsen” och ”få sitt rykte svärtat” om den stackars Goljadkin. Samma sak sker i Edgar Allas Poes ”William Wilson” där huvudpersonen avslöjas som en tarvlig falskspelare av sin dubbelgångare – och i Vladimir Nabokovs ”Förtvivlan” så är det den skötsamme affärsmannen Felix som får idén att mörda sin dubbelgångare för att få ut livförsäkringen, och naturligtvis misslyckas.Det karakteristiska verkar vara att dubbelgångaren synliggör huvudpersonens dåliga sidor, antingen genom att själv vara tygellös och amoralisk, eller genom att trigga och avslöja originalets bristande moral. Och frågan är om det inte är moralproblematiken som är genrens fundament? Konflikten som gestaltas utspelar sig kanske inte, som Freud menar, inom individen, utan mellan individen och samhället, eller mer specifikt, mellan mannen och samhället, för den stora majoriteten författare som skrivit om dubbelgångare är ju, liksom dubbelgångarna själva, män.Så vad är det för djupt liggande oro manlig dubbelgångaren ger uttryck för? Kanske har det något att göra med de sociala regelsystem som växte fram under moderniteten, och som kom att kontrollera och forma just mansrollen på ett nytt sätt. Huvudpersonerna är ju kanslister, läkare och jurister, män ur det hårt arbetande borgerskapet som byggde sin klassidentitet på ordningssamhet, pliktkänsla och moralisk rättskaffenhet. I familjevåningen och salongen fanns inte plats för några låga begär eller utsvävningar, allra minst vad gällde det sexuella, samtidigt som staden och gatan med sina lockande synder låg öppen. Men bara för mannen, vilket nog förklarar varför dubbelgångarlitteraturen är en så specifikt manlig genre.I 1800-talets dagböcker och brev ser man ofta män som ger uttryck för sin skam över att ha supit ner sig, spelat bort pengar eller köpt sex, men mycket lite av detta ventileras i romanen på grund av den hårda censuren. Dubbelgångaren blir då en litterär gestaltning av en rädsla som inte kan vädras offentligt, och som bottnar i en skräck för deklassering och social utstötning.För det ju är mot det postindustriella samhällets normer och moral som den manliga dubbelgångaren brottas idag,Men var hittar vi då dubbelgångaren idag, när censuren avskaffats och vi kan prata om allt? Ett bra exempel är tv-serien ”True detective” från 2014, som skapats av litteraturhistorikern Nic Pizzalotti. Kriminalarna Rust Cohle och Marty Hart gestaltar två sidor av manligheten; den fria amoraliska outsidern som varken tror på gud, naturen eller samhället, men ändå är den som agerar rätt och är sann, och den tyglade, moraliska familjefadern som bygger samhället, men ändå hycklar och begår onda handlingar. Serien har kritiserats för att vara en bromance, och enbart fokusera på mäns relationer, men jag tycker den kan ses som vidareutveckling av det gamla dubbelgångartemat, som gestaltar konflikten mellan det otyglade driftslivet, och kravet på att kontrollera begären och inlemma sig i den sociala ordningen. Frågan som gestaltas är precis samma som hos Dostojevskij och Poe: Hur ska mannen möta de moralkrav som ställs på honom, hur ser den goda maskuliniteten ut?Som en extra krydda kan man säga att serien har en tredje huvudperson, den inavlade seriemördaren – ett driftsstyrt mansmonster som utgör den goda maskulinitetetens motsats, och är ett talande exempel på hur det går om man hamnar utanför samhället. Även en fjärde huvudperson anas. Precis som Sankt Petersburg i början av industrialismens och byråkratins era i Ryssland spelade en avgörande roll för Dostojevskij, så spelar den amerikanska södern med sitt industriella förfall, och sitt dubbla rop på gudsfruktan och frihet, en av huvudrollerna i gotiska ”True Detective”.För det ju är mot det postindustriella samhällets normer och moral som den manliga dubbelgångaren brottas idag, och även om ”True Detective” gestaltar ett specifikt amerikansk dilemma med sin rashistoria och sin klasskamp, så finns grundkonflikten i alla samhällen. De gemensamma lagarna och det sociala trycket ställs mot den enskilda personens frihetslängtan och begär. Det slutar med att han måste läggas in på psyket.Även om dubbelgångartemat gjorde entré i litteraturen redan något decennium tidigare med böcker som Hoffmans Djävulsdrogen, och Mary Shelleys Frankenstein, så var det helt nytt för publiken att få följa en sinnesförvirrad person inifrån. Dostojevskij inspirerades av den mallade gotiska romanen, men hans mer egensinniga komposition slog an något som gjorde att snart sagt varje författare med anseende ville skriva en egen dubbelgångarberättelse. Poe, Stevenson, Dickens, Wilde, Conrad, du Maurier och Nabokov alla har de gett sin version av temat. Så vad är det hos dubbelgångaren som attraherar egentligen? Inom den gotiska skräcktraditionen har man tolkat det som en viktoriansk ängslan för gränsöverskridanden, inte minst sexuella sådana. Den mörka andre är ett monster som uppstår när människan syndat mot Gud, moralen eller naturen, som doktor Frankenstein när han skapar liv ur död materia.I den traditionella skönlitteraturen har tolkningen istället kommit att präglas av Sigmund Freud. I sin essä Det kusliga använder han Hoffmans dubbelgångare i novellen Sandmannen som exempel på just det kusliga något som är välbekant men ändå främmande. I dubbelgångaren känner du igen dig själv, men får samtidigt möjlighet att se dig själv utifrån, med andras blick, precis som Goljadkin. Och Freud satte tonen. Under dubbelgångarlitteraturens glansperiod blev de psykologiska läsningarna helt dominerande. Den andre skulle förstås som en rädsla för att det psykiskt förträngda kunde blottas, men kanske gav den läsningen inte hela bilden?I familjevåningen och salongen fanns inte plats för några låga begär [...] samtidigt som staden och gatan med sina lockande synder låg öppen.För om vi går tillbaka till Dostojevskij och skalar bort allt utanpåverk så handlar ju romanen om en man som vanäras socialt och går under. Om och om igen upprepas, i Bengt Samuelsons fina översättning, fraserna dra i smutsen och få sitt rykte svärtat om den stackars Goljadkin. Samma sak sker i Edgar Allas Poes William Wilson där huvudpersonen avslöjas som en tarvlig falskspelare av sin dubbelgångare och i Vladimir Nabokovs Förtvivlan så är det den skötsamme affärsmannen Felix som får idén att mörda sin dubbelgångare för att få ut livförsäkringen, och naturligtvis misslyckas.Det karakteristiska verkar vara att dubbelgångaren synliggör huvudpersonens dåliga sidor, antingen genom att själv vara tygellös och amoralisk, eller genom att trigga och avslöja originalets bristande moral. Och frågan är om det inte är moralproblematiken som är genrens fundament? Konflikten som gestaltas utspelar sig kanske inte, som Freud menar, inom individen, utan mellan individen och samhället, eller mer specifikt, mellan mannen och samhället, för den stora majoriteten författare som skrivit om dubbelgångare är ju, liksom dubbelgångarna själva, män.Så vad är det för djupt liggande oro manlig dubbelgångaren ger uttryck för? Kanske har det något att göra med de sociala regelsystem som växte fram under moderniteten, och som kom att kontrollera och forma just mansrollen på ett nytt sätt. Huvudpersonerna är ju kanslister, läkare och jurister, män ur det hårt arbetande borgerskapet som byggde sin klassidentitet på ordningssamhet, pliktkänsla och moralisk rättskaffenhet. I familjevåningen och salongen fanns inte plats för några låga begär eller utsvävningar, allra minst vad gällde det sexuella, samtidigt som staden och gatan med sina lockande synder låg öppen. Men bara för mannen, vilket nog förklarar varför dubbelgångarlitteraturen är en så specifikt manlig genre.I 1800-talets dagböcker och brev ser man ofta män som ger uttryck för sin skam över att ha supit ner sig, spelat bort pengar eller köpt sex, men mycket lite av detta ventileras i romanen på grund av den hårda censuren. Dubbelgångaren blir då en litterär gestaltning av en rädsla som inte kan vädras offentligt, och som bottnar i en skräck för deklassering och social utstötning.För det ju är mot det postindustriella samhällets normer och moral som den manliga dubbelgångaren brottas idag,Men var hittar vi då dubbelgångaren idag, när censuren avskaffats och vi kan prata om allt? Ett bra exempel är tv-serien True detective från 2014, som skapats av litteraturhistorikern Nic Pizzalotti. Kriminalarna Rust Cohle och Marty Hart gestaltar två sidor av manligheten; den fria amoraliska outsidern som varken tror på gud, naturen eller samhället, men ändå är den som agerar rätt och är sann, och den tyglade, moraliska familjefadern som bygger samhället, men ändå hycklar och begår onda handlingar. Serien har kritiserats för att vara en bromance, och enbart fokusera på mäns relationer, men jag tycker den kan ses som vidareutveckling av det gamla dubbelgångartemat, som gestaltar konflikten mellan det otyglade driftslivet, och kravet på att kontrollera begären och inlemma sig i den sociala ordningen. Frågan som gestaltas är precis samma som hos Dostojevskij och Poe: Hur ska mannen möta de moralkrav som ställs på honom, hur ser den goda maskuliniteten ut?Som en extra krydda kan man säga att serien har en tredje huvudperson, den inavlade seriemördaren ett driftsstyrt mansmonster som utgör den goda maskulinitetetens motsats, och är ett talande exempel på hur det går om man hamnar utanför samhället. Även en fjärde huvudperson anas. Precis som Sankt Petersburg i början av industrialismens och byråkratins era i Ryssland spelade en avgörande roll för Dostojevskij, så spelar den amerikanska södern med sitt industriella förfall, och sitt dubbla rop på gudsfruktan och frihet, en av huvudrollerna i gotiska True Detective.För det ju är mot det postindustriella samhällets normer och moral som den manliga dubbelgångaren brottas idag, och även om True Detective gestaltar ett specifikt amerikansk dilemma med sin rashistoria och sin klasskamp, så finns grundkonflikten i alla samhällen. De gemensamma lagarna och det sociala trycket ställs mot den enskilda personens frihetslängtan och begär.
