The NEC's Ron Ratner recently connected with FDU track and field star Salif Mane, a 7-time NCAA All-American who recently graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering. Mane, the reigning U.S. national champion and 2024 Olympic finalist in the triple jump, reflected on his incredible journey from FDU to the global stage and shared his thoughts on what lies ahead.
When the basketball team from Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) took to the floor for the college basketball tournament, the fans in the stands cheered for the underdog squad. The team hadn’t been expected to make it past the first round, but they did. And now they heard their fight song blaring from the stands though they didn’t have a band with them. The University of Dayton band had learned FDU’s song minutes before the game. The band could have simply played songs they knew, but they chose to learn the song to help another school and another team. This band’s actions can be seen to symbolize the unity described in Philippians. Paul told the early church at Philippi—and us today—to live in unity, or of “one-mind” (Philippians 2:2) particularly because they were united in Christ. To do this, Paul encouraged them to give up selfish ambition and consider the interests of others before their own. Valuing others above ourselves may not come naturally, but it’s how we can emulate Christ. Paul wrote, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves” (v. 3). Instead of focusing only on ourselves, it’s better to humbly look “to the interests of . . . others” (v. 4). How can we support others? By carefully considering their interests; learning their fight songs or whatever they might need.

In this episode, Dr. Seipp and Mr. Trokan talk with Mrs. Hamade, Ms. DeMaio (VP of TEEEM) as well as a few students about the district's partnership with TEEEM and FDU. This special dual enrollment program with FDU allows students an opportunity to deeply investigate world issues that they care about and actually work to design solutions.
A look at why the FDU loss might be just as important as any game in the program's history.
A sour ending doesn't make the season any less sweet. The NCAA National Title game saw our Boilermakers handled on the perimeter by UConn's wings, as the Huskies limited Purdue to only 7 three pointers attempted, all while Zach Edey got whatever he wanted inside on Donovan Clingan (by Dan Hurley's design). But Purdue won the most games in its basketball history, Edey swept every National Player of the Year award for the second straight year (the first time in over 50 years, since Bill Walton at UCLA), Matt Painter and a roster that almost entirely returned completed a redemptive season a year after the FDU loss (arguably the worst loss in March Madness history). And, oh yeah, our Purdue Boilermakers made the Final Four for the first time since 1980, and won a National Semifinal game for the first time since 1969.By all measures, this could have been the greatest season in Purdue basketball's history, led by possibly Purdue's greatest player in its history, led by possibly Purdue's greatest coach in its history. NOTE: This episode was recorded before the John Calipari to Arkansas news broke. For more on that check out the live episode with Isaac Schade and Lance Dawe. It's all come down to this: Purdue vs. UConn for the 2024 National Championship. Will Zach Edey, Braden Smith, Fletcher Loyer and company find redemption from their loss to FDU in the first round of the 2023 NCAA Tournament? Or will UConn cement their dynasty by winning a second-straight national championship (and doing so in dominant fashion)? Will Tristen Newton once again be the leading scorer in the Championship game? Will the Zach Edey / Donovan Clingan matchup live up to expectations?Bronny James has entered in the transfer portal as well as the NBA Draft. What will he do? It happened. Zach Edey and Dalton Knecht traded haymakers, threes weren't falling, Tennessee was playing the physical style of game they thrive in, the game got tight - and, this time, Matt Painter and our Boilermakers came out on top.The Final Four ceiling for Gene Keady's program has been broken, a potentially destructive FDU became a footnote in a longer story, and the catharsis felt by Purdue fans everywhere wasn't just felt in Detroit's Little Caesars Arena - it was felt by Boilermaker fans across the world, by those still here and lifelong diehards who have passed but are held closely in our memories this week.Sports shouldn't mean this much. It's objectively stupid that they do. But moments like this make the "Purdue family" feel like something beyond just a marketing ploy that every school (and soulless company) preaches but doesn't practice. It feels real, because this is real - this is a family that extends beyond what's normally felt by fans rooting for the same laundry, and it's wonderful that something as meaningless as a basketball game can bring us together like this.Whew. Come talk it out with us. We promise to (mostly) hold it together.Subscribe & rate the Boiled Sports Podcast Network or Purdue will trip again to a double digit seed, except this time in the Final Four. For this week's show, we welcomed new Seahawk Sean Moore! You might remember Sean from scoring a career-high 19 points to lead FDU to one of the all-time stunners in college hoops history vs. Purdue. After hitting the portal as a grad transfer a few weeks back, UNCW instantly made him a priority and brough him in for a visit on the first weekend. Sean got into the details on his visit, how the coaches pitched him on his role with the Seahawks, impressions of the city, and what caused him to commit before taking another visit. Also, he shared his story from being a little-known D2 guard to creating a moment that will forever live in March Madness, how he's improving his game, and the energy he plans to bring Trask next season.
