This week on CounterSpin: CBS News on April 14 said: We're following new violence in the Middle East. Israeli strikes hit a major hospital in northern Gaza. At least 21 people were reportedly killed. The emergency room is badly damaged. Israel accused Hamas of using the hospital to hide its fighters. Meanwhile, Houthi militants in Yemen said they fired two ballistic missiles at Israel. The Israeli military initially said two missiles were launched and one was intercepted, but later said only one missile had been fired. There's information in there, if you can parse it; but the takeaway for most will be that framing: “violence in the Middle East,” which suggests that whatever happened today is just the latest round in a perennial battle between warring parties, where you and I have no role except that of sad bystander. When it comes to Yemen, elite media's repeated reference to “Iran-backed Houthi rebels” not only obscures the current fighting's political origins and recent timeline, it erases the Yemeni people, who are paying the price both for the fighting and for the distortions around it, from political elites and their media amplifiers. We get some grounding from Khury Petersen-Smith; he's the Michael Ratner Middle East fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies. Today marks one year since the Hamas attack on October 7th, 2023. We are joined once again by Khury Petersen-Smith, Michael Ratner Middle East Fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies, where he researches U.S. empire, borders, and migration The U.S. continues to openly endorse Israel's expansionist foreign policy, moving more U.S. military assets into the region as Israel escalates its attacks in Syria, Yemen, Lebanon and the West Bank. The devastation in Gaza and Lebanon is incomparable to what has taken place in prior wars, yet western media continues to diminish Israel's indiscriminate killing of civilians or report on other evidence of war crimes. The U.S. was not simply led by Israel into this war, but willfully joined in. Internal emails recently obtained by Reuters reveal that the Biden Administration knew as far back as October 13, 2023 that the weapons they provided to Israel were being used to target civilians in violation of international law. Brett Murphy, who reports for ProPublica's national desk, found that members of the Biden Administration worked overtime to expedite weapons transfers to Israel despite the concerns of White House officials that displacing Palestinian civilians en masse would lead to a humanitarian disaster. His reporting also exposes the outsized influence that defense industry lobbyists have on U.S. foreign policy. Human Rights Watch investigations have documented war crimes against journalists and civilians in Southern Lebanon, including Israel's widespread use of white phosphorus and other weapons supplied by the US. Israel's use of booby trapped pagers and recent aerial bombardments targeting medical workers and civilian infrastructure in Lebanon have also raised alarm from human rights advocates like Ramzi Kaiss, a researcher in the Middle East and North Africa Division at Human Rights Watch investigating human rights abuses in Lebanon. 33: Solidarity with the caravan; Leandros Fischer on Die Linke’s strategy This week, we talk to Leandros Fischer of Germany’s Die Linke (The Left Party). In the wake of a wave of refugee migration in 2015, the far right in Germany has made terrifying advances. The Alternative for Germany (AfD) has gained seats in the German Parliament and openly fascist forces have rallied in the streets of Chemnitz. But in the last month we also saw a spectacular demonstration of anti-fascist forces a quarter of a million strong in Berlin. Leandros explains how Germany’s position as the leader of the European Union, the weakening of labor protections, and the creation of a two-tier, contract-based workforce have all set the stage for a deepening polarization in German politics. He discusses the history of Die Linke, one of the earliest broad-left party projects in Europe, and its current situation and debates. He helps us untangle the debates on the left about the controversial positions taken by Sahra Wagenknecht.
