This week on the No Regrets Leadership Podcast, Nate is joined by Troy Thomas from Crossway Church teaching team for a meaningful conversation on discipleship and connecting with the next generation. Together, they explore the challenges and opportunities of reaching young men in today's church and how spiritual formation is about more than just teaching—it's about doing. Troy shares how his journey has been centered around making disciples who make disciples, influenced by the writings of Greg Ogden, Dallas Willard, Eugene Peterson, and John Mark Comer. He unpacks the deeper dynamics of how men relate, addressing the widespread loneliness among men and the longing for authentic connection. Troy offers tactical insight into how older men can build meaningful relationships with younger generations. Greg and the GDI team dispel the notion that only the experts can make disciples. Disciple-making is a job meant for every single disciple of Jesus, whether we feel like we can do it or not. And with organizations like Global Discipleship Initiative the everyday disciple has tools to help them.
Greg Ogden and Dan Dominguez of Global Discipleship Initiative taught at last year's Forum about the spiritual grandparent - the one who makes disciples that make disciples.
Greg Ogden and Dave Schanuel of Global Discipleship Initiative explained the difference between program-based churches and disciple-making churches and taught us the power of the personal invitation.
Many of our churches are filled with people who depend solely on their pastor to be fed, taking the name “Christian” without truly becoming a disciple and following Christ in their daily rhythms. So how do we move past this culture of passive faith and begin intentionally creating disciples who make more disciples?Dr. Greg Ogden, leader of the Global Discipleship Initiative and author of more than 6 books (including Transforming Discipleship), shares how to create a culture of self-aware and intentional discipleship over dependency - both individually and in the context of community. Today’s Scripture reading comes from Isaiah 6:3, quoting from the NASB: “And one called out to another and said, ‘Holy, Holy, Holy, is the LORD of hosts, the whole earth is full of His glory.’” Have you considered holiness as an essential leadership quality? I have to admit, when I think of leadership essentials, “holy” does not immediately surface as a necessary trait. What comes to mind when you hear the word “holy?” “Holy roller” and “holier than thou” are cultural expressions we hear. Sadly, the tendency is to use “holy” in a derogatory sense. In his book Leadership Essentials, Greg Ogden makes the point, “The Bible is much more concerned about who a leader is than what a leader does.” That is similar to his thought, “Developing character is more important than polishing skills.” Performance is the usual bottom line indicator and bread and butter for leaders. However, how are Christ’s followers to be as servant leaders? What does it mean to be holy? Jesus is the perfect model of holiness. Based on His life, holiness would include the absence of sin and the presence of fruit of the Spirit. Jesus knew no sin. However, because we are sinful, yet chosen to carry out God’s work on earth, it is useful to recount Isaiah’s entry into the service of God. Read Isaiah 6:1-8. Isaiah decried his sin before a holy God, saying: “I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips.” With a “live coal” Isaiah’s lips were touched, his guilt was taken away, and his sin atoned for. We, as Isaiah, have not lived sinless lives, but through forgiveness of sin, the Lord used Isaiah and uses us in spiritual service. Holiness is purity. Though sinful, the one who confesses his sin is purified for service. Finally, as disciples of Christ we should follow His example and exhibit the Spirit’s fruit. What good news! When the Spirit of God leads our hearts, good fruit is the result, and the sin nature is quelled. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. These qualities abounded in Jesus. As disciples called to lead, we are made to have His nature. Take a minute and evaluate the presence of the fruit of the Spirit in your life. Which fruit is most abundant in your life right now? After reflecting on the abundance, think on the fruit you sense needs to be growing in you. // Points to Ponder Over the next week, here are 3 points to ponder during your personal time of reflection or with a small group or mentor. Think of these as ways to cultivate greater abundance of the Spirit’s fruit: First, offer a prayer to God to help your weakness become your strength. Second, following periods of Bible reading, journal over the next seven days. What applications are the Holy Spirit revealing concerning the fruit you desire in greater. Third, what God has given in abundance, use to His glory. Let our strengths honor Him. // Monthly Evaluation It’s time for a quick monthly evaluation. Click here to download the monthly reflection sheet. Use the reflection sheet to help gauge your habit of integrating faith and profession, and to help get you into the habit of keeping a written record of those times when the Holy Spirit speaks to you. // About the Narrator MAJ Marissa Dey serves in the United States Army. // Purchase a Copy Call the OCF Home Office at 800-424-1984 to purchase a paperback copy of the book, or buy a Kindle version at Amazon.

In this episode we learn from pastor, speaker, author and disciple maker, Greg Ogden. We know him as the author of Discipleship Essentials and he is our guest speaker at our 2020 annual 4:19 Disciple Makers conference. Today, Greg teaches us the difference between a Christian and a Disciple. Greg Ogden is “retired” or better yet “redeployed” (as of March 2012) from professional church leadership. He now lives out his passion for speaking, teaching, and writing about the disciple-making mission of the church. He is the author of six books: Unfinished Business: Returning the Ministry to the People of God (Zondervan, 2003), Discipleship Essentials: A Guide to Building Your Life in Christ: Expanded and Revised (InterVarsity Press, 2019), Transforming Discipleship: Making Disciples a Few at a Time (Intervarsity Press, 2016); with co-author, Daniel Meyer, Leadership Essentials: Shaping Vision, Multiplying Influence, Defining Character (InterVarsity Press, 2007), The Essential Commandment: A Guide to Loving God and Others (InterVarsity Press, 2011), and lastly, Essential Guide to Becoming a Disciple (November 2016). Dr. Ogden is a chairman of the board of Global Discipleship Initiative (GDI). GDI trains, coaches, and inspires pastors and Christian leaders to establish indigenous, multiplying, disciple-making movements, both nationally and internationally. (globaldi.org)
Dear CPC family, Last Sunday morning while many of you were enjoying a sermon from Greg Ogden, we were unloading over 200 boxes, dozens of pieces of furniture and our life belongings from two moving trucks into our rental home. After some car trouble Saturday night (and Pastor Tim misplacing some very important bed-frame legs), the Lord worked everything out and we are in Carmel alive and well. I'm so looking forward to meeting all of you, but must admit we are still neck high in boxes both in our home and in my office. We’re starting a series called “A New Chapter” by focusing on the book of Nehemiah. Keep in mind there were three different times the Jews were taken into captivity to Babylon and three different times they were permitted to return to their homeland. The first group of Jews who returned were led by Zerubbabel; the second group was led by Ezra, a scribe of God’s law; and the third group were led by Nehemiah. Each one of these three leaders rebuilt Judah in their own way. Zerubbabel rebuilt the temple of God. Ezra reorganized the temple worship. Nehemiah rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem. We’ll take the next four weeks to sit with God’s Word and see what the Spirit might be saying to us as a community of faith in this new chapter of ministry for CPC. I’m so honored to be called your pastor and my family is so excited to call this community our new home. There are still three more days of our 40 Days of Prayer journey and I will continue to join you in praying for our church and our community, all while praising God for the many good gifts He has bestowed upon us. Thank you for your prayers for our transition as the Lord has answered several specific prayer requests already. You are already a blessing to me and my family. Following Jesus with you, Pastor Tim

Jesus Is Not Enough Okay, now that I have your attention, in what way could Jesus ever be not enough? In fact, Jesus tells us that He is not enough. Okay, I bite, you say. In what way is Jesus not enough? Of course, Jesus is all that is needed for our salvation. He has done it all. But when it comes to relationships, Jesus is not sufficient. In fact, there was a time in the Garden of Eden when Adam was alone with God in the garden and it was said, “It is not good that man should be alone” (Genesis 2:18). Adam was only complete when the woman, Eve, was created out of him and brought to him. “At last”, he explained, “bone of my bone, flesh of my flesh.” Adam only becomes a man when there is woman. This same complementary truth is emphasized in the creation of the church. In a day of radical individualism that marks our culture, Jesus has created a counter-cultural community called the church. In our evangelical tradition, we put the emphasis on individual salvation—someone making personal decision for Jesus. What we have failed to appreciate is that Jesus is saving people into new humanity, an alternative community called the church. Can you be a follower of Jesus and not be intertwined with the church? We will shed some light on that question this Sunday. I hope you join me! -- Greg Ogden

One of the distinctives of the church of Jesus Christ is that we don’t get to choose the members of the family—Jesus does. We are called to live with each other in the spirit of the One who purchased our lives. Yet I love how realistic the Scriptures are when it comes to the potential friction that can occur amongst us. The apostle Paul brings relational realism when he calls us to “bear with one another in love”; he asks the Corinthians to “put with a little foolishness” in him; we are told to “let our forbearance be known to all”. Forbearance is blue-collar grace. It is grace with a lunch bucket. It is the kind of grace that is willing to get our hands dirty. Forbearance is the quality we need when we rub up close to people, especially when we have to graciously figure out how to put up with people in the body of Christ who are different from us. God did not consult with us when he chose to place certain people in the body of Christ. All those people with whom we worship are chosen, but not by you or me. Forbearance is the grease, which reduces the friction when our lives rub against each other. -- Greg Ogden --

Many of our friends know Greg Ogden from Green Girl Studios, but not everyone knows about his other projects and interests. In this episode of Allegory Gallery Interviews, we speak with Greg about his inspirations, words of advice, and projects outside of Green Girl Studios. We would also like to thank Charles Howes and Greg for providing us with our new theme music for Allegory Gallery Interviews!
I met Brian at the gym. Even though we enjoyed some conversations together, I don't think I even knew his name at that point. But I asked him if he would like to be on my podcast. Brian is a Christian, and he's also Roman Catholic, so that was interesting to me. I was interested in what Christianity is like for a fellow Christian who is of a different church tradition from me. Near the end I talk about a discipleship group I'm interested in. If you are interested in joining me or doing something similar on your own, feel free to contact me. The Other 99 - Equipping The Church for Community, Discipleship, and Mission
We continue our series on the key terms in our tagline (Community, Discipleship, and Mission) with this episode on Discipleship. Here's what we talk about: Icebreaker: Two Truths and a Lie; Different layers of community within the church; You need a Paul, Barnabas, and a Timothy in your life; There can be some overlap between Paul/Barnabas or Barnabas/Timothy; What ‘disciple' means and doesn't mean; TWO MINUTE CHALLENGE: David explains the history of discipleship; Check out “Dust” by Rob Bell for more explanation of the history of discipleship; Check out “Practicing the Way” sermon series by John Mark Comer; Jesus' discipleship isn't based on merit or earning his favor; 3 goals of discipleship: 1) Be with Jesus, 2) Become like Jesus, 3) Do what Jesus did; Being with Jesus means abiding in Jesus; Abiding in Jesus means practicing the spiritual disciplines like prayer and Bible reading; Abiding in Jesus means reorienting our consciousness to rest in the constant presence of God around you; Becoming like Jesus means cutting down on outward sins and practicing good works; Becoming like Jesus means having the mind of Christ not just the actions of Christ; Becoming like Jesus involves a change at the heart level; We become like Jesus through abiding; We become like Jesus in community; We become like Jesus through counseling; Establish a baseline in your discipleship by doing an inventory using a passage like: Galatians 5:22-23 1 Corinthians 13 2 Peter 1:5-8 Philippians 2:1-13 Romans 12 Doing what Jesus did means doing the following: preaching the Gospel, teaching the way, healing the sick, casting out demons, eating and drinking with people far from God, doing justice, peacemaking, praying, prophesying, standing up against religious and political corruption; We can't do what Jesus did on our own; All 3 of these goals are important///don't emphasize one at the expense of the others; Discipleship is an ongoing process RECOMMENDATION STATION Guy --- John Mark Comer @ Bridgetown Church “Practicing the Way” Sermon Series (http://bridgetown.church/teaching/) Bethany --- Google Docs (https://docs.google.com) David --- Discipleship Essentials by Greg Ogden (https://www.amazon.com/Discipleship-Essentials-Guide-Building-Christ/dp/0830810870/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1480633559&sr=8-1&keywords=greg+ogden) CONTEST WINNERS Congratulations to David Shoemaker and Chloe Weibel for winning our iTunes rating and review contest! This podcast session is the second part of the talk that I gave at The University of Texas at Dallas. The topic I am addressing is “God’s Mission at the University”. In order to unpack this idea, I will be using Acts 2:36-47 as the main text. If you haven’t done so yet, go back and listen to session #8 to gain more context. You can find that session at www.linsondaniel.com/8. The university is a critical juncture in the life of a person. College students are away from home, away from parents, and many are making decisions within the next 4 years that will impact the next 40 years of their life. It is vital for college students to meet Jesus within this timeframe and within this context. The university is one of the best moments in a person’s life, especially when Jesus is in the mix. The university is where I gained clarity about Jesus. This podcast session features the first part of my last talk in the series, "Being Disciples, Making Disciples". This talk is entitled, "Good News and Transformation". Often following Jesus takes us to hard places in life… it’s tough. I’ve experienced this many times. I know you have too. Whoever said that following Jesus would make life easy, lied to us. Following Jesus is good, but it ain’t always easy. Jesus engages in a provocative conversation with a Samaritan woman at the well. Jesus helps us see that being a disciple can be difficult, and Jesus also helps us see that the Gospel can cross any kind of boundary. I hope this conversation will expand our understanding of Jesus. Session #005 Click to Listen Main Outline Main Text: John 4 Being a disciple can take us to difficult places and situations Everyday moments at a well can become extraordinary if disciples point to Jesus The Gospel can cross any kind of boundary if disciples are willing to share Reflection Questions Are there hard things going on in your life? How is Jesus speaking to you through difficulty? In which way is Jesus calling you to cross boundaries to reach people around you? Which boundaries are the hardest for you to cross? Jesus helps clarify three important things with Nicodemus. Jesus helps Nicodemus see himself, God, and God's Love more clearly. He reveals to Nicodemus that God's intention is to renew the entire world. It is amazing to see the transformation that happens to Nicodemus! If you haven't done so yet, please go back and listen to Session 1, Session 2, and Session 3 for more insight into this series. Session #004 Click to Listen Main Outline Main Text: John 3 We cannot come to Jesus on our own terms Jesus wants to open the box that we have put Him in Jesus wants to challenge our assumption on religion and spirituality Jesus wants us to see ourselves, God, and God's Love more clearly Reflection Questions Which areas of your life are lukewarm and hypocritical? What does it look like for you to give your entire life to Jesus? How is Jesus challenging you to go out and make disciples?
