Your Jesse Tree will be covered in Bible-themed ornaments that will be a daily reminder of the stories you have read and the promise of the coming Messiah. Order now, the devotional begins December 1st.   There are three books that listeners may wish to go to about gratitude:   One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp which I mentioned in the last episode. This wonderful book deals a lot with gratitude that can come from loss and grief.    Gratitude Works and Little Book of Gratitude by Robert Emmons. These two very practical books were written by Emmons, a researcher who has studied the benefits of gratitude, how to develop it, and sustain it.   When we experience life as a gift, then we, as the receivers of the gifts in life, naturally have gratitude. Emmons and others have shown that having gratitude benefits our emotional and spiritual lives, as well as our physical well-being and our prosperity. Gratitude multiplies itself with its impact. When we yield to being in need of others and God, and experience the effect of needing, we receive a yield, or a harvest of benefits.   Not only do we have an expectation of good things in our lives, we also are able to recall good things in times of trouble. For example, recalling or remembering times when we received something good can help us persevere in troubled times. We can hang on to hope because of remembering.   Click here to continue reading the episode highlights.

If you pick up a pen every day and you write down what you're grateful for, when you are in crisis, your soul will have a memory of what it is supposed to do. How can I give thanks to God in the midst of this valley and trial? Because ultimately what we need...can we position our soul to remember the truth? God is always good and I am always loved. Because when difficult things happen and the waves hit us, what the enemy of our souls can hiss: Is God really good now? Is God really kind? Does God really love you when this tragedy happens twice in your life? When you have a memory muscle, a gratitude muscle that knows that in crisis I keep giving thanks, what that means is that gratitude muscle will mean that you are strong in joy. And that if you let...don't let anything go ahead and steal your joy, because the joy of the Lord is your what? Your strength. So gratitude and joy are intimately connected right there at the Lord's Supper.---Listen to Ann Voskamp, the four-times New York Times best-selling author of WayMaker, The Broken Way, The Greatest Gift, and One Thousand Gifts: A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Are being interviewed by seasoned journalist Lorna Dueck. Well, if you had asked me who has been an impact-maker in my own life, then my answer would be my mother. But her legacy is so much more than the impact she has had on my life.  My mother died at the age of 83 in 2020. I don't have any hurt or pain around her passing because I truly believe she was living her best life. She was a woman of faith, who lived a life of service. She was a person who reached out to others and gave something without expecting something in return.  This episode includes some personal reflections on my mother's life and her impact on me and others. In today's episode, my friend Jenny and I invite you to listen in as we discuss the imaginary checklists that we create for being a "certified" homemaker through comparison and the need for checking expectations at the door and share ways in which we fight for beauty and gratitude amongst the tasks of our days' work within our homes."Homemaking, a lot of times is 1000 mundane tasks every single day that you're going to do over and over and over again that you're like, "I'm doing this today so that I can get up again tomorrow and do it again. Like it's going be the same. It's I'm going have to clean the kitchen again tomorrow, probably three times." So that is super defeating to me. If I get in that realm, what can I do that's going make it special. Is it going to be music, a candle, like a cup of tea, coffee for me usually or what can I find that's beautiful here? Like, what am I living right now that I prayed for? What am I living right now that I always hoped for? That I'm still not reaching this like checkbox or this expectation, so that I'm almost discontent in the right now because this still isn't perfect. And this still isn't perfect. And maybe my kitchen doesn't look like this, or maybe my weights like this, or my hair's falling out. All of those things, what can we do in those moments? Well, we can kind of say like, "what are our expectations? And what's actually really beautiful, and where am I really at?" - Jenny Fitzgerald (@fitzgeraldlane on Instagram)A few little things that were mentioned in today's episode + the coordinating details:1. Sometimes we buy the lie that life isn't supposed to be hard, but the truth is that we don't get the way of Jesus without having to pick up a cross. Ann shares with us that peace is not a place, but a person - and we will not get out of that pit until we are fully honest with God. Waymaker is a book that asks us “who are we really turning towards?” And Ann reminds us that even though we cannot control the wind, we can control the way of our sail and turn it towards Christ.Connect with JamieFacebook // Twitter // Instagram // YouTubeGET ALL THE LINKS FROM THE SHOW HERE

Welcome to The Gospel Changes Everything Podcast! In this episode, Alisha Illian teams up with Marcie Morris to tackle an important issue - false teaching. This episode will probably challenge your thinking, and it may step on your toes. Our advice? Do your best to listen (to the whole thing!) with an open mind and a teachable spirit. While the IF:Gathering is specifically discussed, this episode goes beyond simply targeting one source of false teaching. Alisha and Marcie provide a biblical basis for WHY and HOW false gospels should be called out. Additionally, you'll be encouraged to study and research for yourself. As mentioned in this episode, every Christian is empowered by the Holy Spirit and equipped through the Word of God to develop discernment regarding what we are taught. Resources mentioned in this episode: Scripture support for "naming names" when discussing false teachers/teaching: 2 Timothy 4:10 — "Demas: in love with this present world", 2 Timothy 1:15 — "Phygelus and Hermogenes (turned away)", 1 Tim 1:19-20 —"some have shipwrecked their faith among whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan that they may learn", 2 Tim 2:17 — "their talk will spread like gangrene — among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus", 3 John 3 — "I have written to the church, but Diotrephes, who likes to put himself first..." Moments of thankfulness often pass us by without acknowledgment. But what might happen if we create a habit of noticing and capturing them. From one thousand gifts to three thousand gifts and counting. This is a Guest Post from Pauline Turnbull. It all began on the 24th of October 2020 when I took up the challenge of writing down one thousand gifts I could thank God for.  I had been reading 'One Thousand Gifts: A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Are' by Ann Voskamp.   To date, it is precisely one year from the day I wrote my first GIFT.  Barry's invitation to write this post is listed in my book as Gift# 3,001, after naming Gift# 3,000 as a thank you to God for each of those 3,000 gifts.  So today, I opened my notebook and went back to where my gift counting began. As I scan the pages, I am reliving the gifts I've numbered. These are sacred moments of grace and love that God has given to me.   Read this further here FOLLOW ME! What does the Christmas season mean to you? Do you still get filled with childlike nostalgia? Do you find it easy to think about the birth of our Savior? Or maybe Christmas often feels like a time of difficulty and struggle for you? The layers and emotions associated with the holidays can sometimes be overwhelming for us. Elisa and Eryn pinpoint some of their own lessons from past Christmas celebrations while also highlighting ways in which we can focus on turning this often stressful season into a season all of us can once again enjoy.   Notes and Quotes:  “Give thanks in all circumstances. It’s not for all circumstances, but in all circumstances.”  “So in that moment, look at that one item and [say], ‘Okay I don’t want this in my life, but I am going to give thanks in it, trusting your character, God, in it.’” “When we say that, I think we are a little afraid it sounds like whining to God, but maybe it sounds like honesty to God.” Thanksgiving Turkey Fingers: Trace your hand on a piece of paper and write down what you are thankful for on each finger.  “Gratitude changes us.” “It doesn't diminish the bad, it’s still there; but it puts it into a perspective that helps us in that circumstance to find gratitude.” “Comparison is in the holidays. We compare a lot. I compare a lot . . . what that family looks like, what their holiday card looks like.” “No one is really living a Hallmark life, we are all living real life.” Ideas to get our grateful going: gratitude journal, sticky note reminders, focus on an ornament, correct self-talk, gratitude partner, think about other people.   Links/Books/Resources Mentioned In Show:  Show Notes on godhearsher.org God Hears Her website: https://www.godhearsher.org/ Subscribe on iTunes!  https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/god-hears-her-podcast/id1511046507?utm_source=applemusic&utm_medium=godhearsher&utm_campaign=podcast Order God Sees Her: 365 Devotions for Women by Women on Amazon.  https://amzn.to/32lYSgh Free eBooklet to Download: Windows on Christmas https://discoveryseries.org/courses/windows-on-christmas/ Anne Voskamp’s book: One Thousand Gifts https://amzn.to/3lZWtjZ  Elisa’s Instagram: elisamorganauthor Eryn’s Instagram: eryneddy   Verses Mentioned in Show:  1 Thessalonians 5:18 NIV - “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Thessalonians+5%3A18&version=NIV

In this episode we talk about her personal journey to counseling, faith, and we briefly chat about resiliency, COVID, and college students. Stay tuned for the end where she shares about who she Is in the audience for. It's a sweet story that I'll remember for a long time. TW: If you struggle with depression or suicidal thoughts, I want to give you a heads up that in this episode, Cindy is straightforward about her experience with planning her own suicide in the past which ultimately led her to her Christian faith now. Books Cindy recommended: "Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell - she referenced this book when she talks about the concept of putting 10,000 hours of work into something, like the example of the Beatles. "One Thousand Gifts" by Ann Voskamp - referenced in regards to making gratitude a regular practice and noting the health benefits of this.

How do you recognize the possibilities that business and life are handing you? In this leadership podcast episode, I expose an incredibly effective key to seeing more opportunities—gratitude.  Be Present and Thankful to See More Possibilities We are pre-wired for negativity. When faced with a challenge, our default perceptions and our automatic narratives kick in before we have time to consider options.  To kick the negativity narrative and become more aware of opportunities, reframe your perceptions to recognize challenging situations as invitations to grow and become. A key that makes a better perspective possible is gratitude. It may sound simplistic, but giving thanks for what you have—even when it's insufficient—opens your eyes to possibilities, to opportunities that are hidden when you're entangled in broken thought and behavior patterns. Thanksgiving Reveals One Thousand Gifts I've known and taught this principle for years, but I still need reminders. I recently read One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp. It was like getting hit in the face with a bucket of cold water. Her story serves as a shocking wake-up call to remember that all of life is a gift for growing and that thanksgiving is the key that reveals the gift. (If you are one of the first five people to mention this specific episode on your Instagram, Facebook, or LinkedIn profile, I'll send you a free copy of Ann's book. Tag me so I see the post!) Intentional Gratitude Opens Your Eyes Gratitude is not a command, it's an invitation. It's an opportunity to see the best, to acknowledge the beauty, to capture the benefit of a moment or a situation. When you begin to practice gratitude intentionally, your eyes are opened to the possibilities around the moment or the relationship. Several years ago, I spent an entire year focused on being grateful. The more gratitude I expressed, the more I found to be grateful for.  I believe that intentional gratitude is an act of resistance and rebellion against the prevailing presence of anxiety in our culture. Psychologist Robert Leahy points out, “The average child today exhibits the same level of anxiety as the average psychiatric patient in the 1950s.” Maintaining an attitude of gratitude isn't easy. You will need some help getting started if this isn't in your normal emotional regimen. The Gratitude Challenge My friend Kevin Monroe has developed a powerful kickstart to a lifestyle of intentional gratitude. The Gratitude Challenge is a free 10-day jumpstart, or catalyst, to living a life marked by thanksgiving. If you need a push in your process, this is a great, free tool to help you shift your perspective. Gratitude Is Too Simple This is one of those invitations that seems too simple to be effective. I promise that if you will begin to intentionally find things to be thankful for, especially in moments when you could express the opposite, you'll become increasingly aware of possibilities around you. Your perceptions will begin to conform to your gratitude. It will make you a better version of you! A better you, better team, better business, better life is possible, but the choice is yours. A kind of real magic any one of us can perform, a kind of magic I do believe has the power to change our experience of reality, if not reality itself. "I promise if you keep searching for everything beautiful in this world, you will eventually become it." — Tyler Kent White MENTIONED ON THE SHOW One Thousand Gifts: A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Are by Ann Voskamp The Book of Faded Green The Money Shift HOST LINKS - SLADE ROBERSON Slade's Books & Courses Get an intuitive reading with Slade Automatic Intuition FACEBOOK GROUP Shift Your Spirits Community BECOME A PATRON https://www.patreon.com/shiftyourspirits Edit your pledge on Patreon TRANSCRIPT *this the Author's Draft ; not technically a full transcript I promise if you keep searching for everything beautiful in this world, you will eventually become it. — Tyler Kent White My hair stylist is, as many of them are, a down low psychotherapist. We were talking about someone miserable in my life She mentioned gratitude Our standing appointments every other week are mini summits between the New Age and New Christianity (hipster Christians we call them around here, not disparagingly) The Camp House Anyway she told me about a Christian author, Ann Voskamp who wrote this contemplative book called 1000 Gifts I haven’t read it and probably won’t but I still like the idea I am totally guilty of pessimism and negativity Double Scorpio grew up with a father who is a total Eeyore My Saturn Return had a lot to do with becoming aware of my negative perspective and how the voices I’d taken on were polluting my experience, my life, my capacity for joy Seth taught me how to do this. I credit him with teaching me the power of reframing. Miraculously, at 22 years old, he was one of the wisest people I’d ever encountered and one of my most effective therapists … to this date. You hear me speak of him often. He’s the Gayle to my Oprah Oprah helped really popularize and mainstream the concept of gratitude journaling It’s connected to the practice of Julia Cameron's Morning Pages which were popularized around the same time period. The Book of Faded Green was my first instinctive experiment — life changing Years later, I used re-framing to change my relationship with Abundance and escape poverty Even several years after that, it became The Money Shift The concept of the exercise in The Money Shift can be adapted to any number of things you need to shift. The name of this blog, this podcast SHIFT YOUR SPIRITS has always been at its core, a message about the power of reframing It’s a kind of Neurolinguistic programming Re-programming The past year was really hard for me because of my relationship with one family member. Someone who married into my family. This is the person I was discussing with my stylist I’ve never had “feuds” with anyone or falling out with any family members, not really I don’t fight with my brother I’m a Leo — we are triggered by a desire to protect those we believe are in our charge… Carrying around anger and outrage is debilitating And it’s not like doing The Money Shift for one month means those negative voices never creep back in. Reframing negative voices is chiropractic … shifting shifting shifting in the right direction, then back sliding with each little life encounter pulling in the other direction I usually practice what people would call Gratitude Journaling in the car. Driving allows me to look around and observe, and when I’m feeling desperately dark, I just start naming anything I like and can remark on positively The clouds are cool today. That tree’s beautiful. I love seeing the mountains from this stretch of highway… Anything I can grab onto to start that shift when I’ve forgotten myself. I was just thinking about how I needed to do another round of more focused, intense, committed Gratitude Shifting when a meme popped up on Facebook It says: Did you know you can rewire your brain to be happy by simply recalling 3 things you’re grateful for every day for 21 days? I thought, why yes. yes I do know some version of that concept if not this exact statistic. (Unverified by the way, but who cares, the spirit of it works for me.) Susan Hyatt suggested it as a challenge to her Facebook friends and asked if others wanted to participate with her. And like I needed anything else on my To Do list with a daily check in … But the synchronicity was there and sometimes my spontaneous decisions are the best, so I just did it. You may have seen me posting on my personal page or in the SYS group. I missed a day - who cares - I just picked up where I left off. I’m trying though to pick 3 DIFFERENT things every day and not just repeat versions of the same thing. Because my stylist told me one of the things she loved most about reading this woman’s book who did the 1000 Gifts, was how much, after you run through the obvious list of things, you really have to contemplate and observe and reach into the most mundane moments of your life to find new sources of beauty. For instance, she talked about being moved by a particularly meditative passage on washing dishes and observing the miraculous surface of soap bubbles. And I thought YES, the magic in the mundane. that’s where real magic is found. I don’t want magic to be woo woo, nearly as much as I need it to be REAL This is something Toni Morrison talks about and has been in my consciousness since I was a teenager. So, I thought, yes, won’t it be interesting to see where you might go after 21 days. 3 items for 21 days is ONLY 63 items. What will it take to discover 1000. If you keep doing 3 a day, it will take you 333 days And that math makes me think of the power of the 3 x 3 strategy And so I feel like this is a new magic spell we could do. It has threads running through so many Shift Your Spirits themes and memes. You could even do this as part of your Reboot — the free writing, journaling part of the process. Finding a list of 1000 things at 3 per day would essentially be 3 Reboots. And here’s the secret about the Reboot — you don’t stop after 3 months anyway, you do it indefinitely. That’s what happens when you fall into that practice and it becomes such a source of peace and energy. No pressure if you want to take on this challenge. Break it down in chunks. Work it in stages. This first part is 3 things per day for 21 days. Let’s do that part first and see where it gets us. And I think it might be cool if people post their daily gratitude in the Shift Your Spirits community. Hell, post that every day. Don’t be shy. Stick a cool picture. Nobody will be “annoyed.” If anything, for lurkers and scrollers, it still impacts us because we see that, in the moment, and we see others commenting and chiming in, and maybe we do post ours or maybe we don’t. But we think it. What are mine? What 3 things am I grateful for today? Everyone’s shifting together. And what if it becomes a habit? What if it becomes like stopping to take deep breaths for a minute? Or stopping to correct your posture? Or to stand and move your body when you’ve been sitting for too long? Listen, we are diving toward extinction of our species and the death of our planet. And when I started this blog, this platform, I believed we were on the verge of Ascensions In the last 2 years or so … Hmm. I really worry that we are riding out the last days and we have shifted away from elevating the human race. We need to pull out of this nose dive fast. People shifting, in their own bubbles, shifting against one another … Shifting into each other, connecting, networking ... Shifting en masse. Like the foaming clouds of soap bubbles in your kitchen sink... That’s magic. And I do believe that could change the world.

One of the most powerful virtues in our society, is also one of our least known virtues: gratitude. Gratitude is the key to not only experiencing what communities want, an authentic, thriving joy — but is what Chesterton called the highest form of thinking. Thinking that is bedrock foundational to healthy relationships, strong communities, and vibrant culture. At a time when it seems easy to point out all that’s wrong with the world, advancing the common good requires a lens through which one actually sees the good. Finding, celebrating and cultivating the good, true and beautiful, is key to how we will shape the future of our neighborhoods, cities and communities. How can we alter our perspectives and be known for what we are for, instead of what we are against? New York Times Bestselling Author of One Thousand Gifts, and The Broken Way, Ann Voskamp unpacks with us what can dynamically transform our communities.

We sit down with Bethany's friend Cherri Belew this week to continue our conversation about money and generosity. Cherri is the Connections Pastor at Vinings Church and lives a life marked by extravagant generosity.  Icebreaker; Cherri talks about her experiences growing up that formed her generosity; Tithing being about more than just giving 10%; Serving being about going beyond what's in your job description; Stewardship is about how you steward anything you're responsible for, not just money; Biggest misconception about stewardship is that we own our money and our time; Churches aren't the true stewards, people are stewards from the beginning; Saying hello to someone is being generous to them; Showing generosity changes people's hearts; David fangirls; Stewardship and generosity are not formulas to change people's lives; We are called to be generous even if nothing changes in the lives of those we're generous to; True motivation of our generosity is love, not expecting anything in return; Why shouldn't we give to our neighbor the same things we would give to our children; "Why does everything have to be about what we gain from it?" "Some people are so poor that all they have is money." "Each one of us has so much to give. The possibilities are endless." "People who are selfish truly don't love themselves enough." How we can reconcile seemingly extravagant church buildings in cities with homeless populations; Jesus said "the poor will always be with you" so we always need to be looking for ways to be generous to others; Starting our generosity with giving away our extra stuff; Carry cash on you always; Some ideas about how to teach our kids generosity; We can be generous because we know God will take care of our needs; RECOMMENDATION STATION We're so glad to have everyone's favorite segment back.
