As always, I appreciate your feedback, questions, and reviews!” Dealing with Disappointment and Discouragement Biblically - Or, What to do when you fell like quitting! I. The Reality of Disappointment and Discouragement Opening Quote: “When you feel like quitting, remember why you started.” Key Idea: Everyone faces disappointment and discouragement at some point, whether in ministry, relationships, or personal struggles. However, God's Word gives us perspective on how to face these moments with faith and perseverance. II. Acknowledge the Reality of Disappointment Scripture Reference: Psalm 34:18 – “The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit.” Disappointment is not something we should deny or try to avoid. It's a reality of life, but God is close to the brokenhearted. He doesn't leave us in our despair. No one's life goes like they expect or really want it to. Pain and suffering are a reality. Example: David – In many of his psalms, David expressed deep feelings of despair and discouragement, but he also demonstrated turning to God in those times (e.g., Psalm 42). III. Recognizing the Call to Persevere Scripture Reference: Galatians 6:9 – “And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.” In the midst of discouragement, we must remind ourselves that God's promises are true. We may not see the fruit immediately, but the reward is coming if we remain faithful. Example: Paul – Despite constant opposition, Paul continued in his ministry, reminding others to press on despite the trials (2 Corinthians 4:6-10). IV. Recalling the Purpose Behind Our Journey Scripture Reference: Philippians 3:13-14 – “Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” The Apostle Paul, despite his challenges and struggles, kept his eyes on the prize—the call of God in Christ Jesus. Our purpose in Christ should be the motivation to keep going. Example: Moses – Leading the Israelites out of Egypt was a long and challenging journey, but Moses remained focused on the ultimate promise of the land of Canaan (Hebrews 11:24-26). V. God's Faithfulness in Our Struggles Scripture Reference: Isaiah 41:10 – “Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” God's faithfulness never wavers. Even in moments of discouragement, we are reminded that He is with us, strengthening and helping us through the journey. Example: Elijah – After his great victory on Mount Carmel, Elijah faced deep discouragement and wanted to quit. Yet God met him where he was and reassured him that He was still at work (1 Kings 19:1-18). VI. Trusting God's Timing and Plan Scripture Reference: Romans 8:28 – “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” It's easy to feel discouraged when the timing doesn't seem right. But we can trust that God's timing is perfect, and He is working everything for our good in His sovereign plan. Example: Joseph – Joseph's journey was filled with disappointment and discouragement (betrayal, false accusations, imprisonment), yet God was with him, working through his circumstances for a greater purpose (Genesis 50:19-20). VII. Focusing on Our Relationship with Jesus Scripture Reference: Matthew 11:28-30 – “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” In our moments of discouragement, Jesus invites us to find rest in Him, knowing that He understands our struggles and that He is with us through them. Example: The Disciples in the Storm – When the disciples were in the storm, Jesus was with them, and He calmed the storm. Jesus is with us in our storms (Matthew 14:22-33). VIII. The Strength to Keep Going Comes from God's Presence Scripture Reference: 2 Corinthians 12:9 – “But He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” In our weaknesses, we are reminded that God's grace and power are enough. It is through our weakness that His strength is made evident. Example: Paul's Thorn in the Flesh – Paul dealt with a persistent difficulty (the thorn in his flesh), but he learned to rely on God's grace, which gave him strength to continue (2 Corinthians 12:7-10). IX. Encouraging One Another in Disappointment Scripture Reference: Hebrews 10:24-25 – “And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.” Encouragement is a key part of walking through discouragement. God has placed us in community so that we can support one another and remind each other of the hope we have in Christ. Example: Barnabas and Paul – Barnabas, known as the “Son of Encouragement,” helped Paul when others were fearful of him, reminding him of God's calling and purpose in his life (Acts 9:26-27). X. Conclusion: Pressing On with Hope in Christ Scripture Reference: 2 Timothy 4:7-8 – “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing.” Paul's words serve as a powerful reminder that despite all the struggles, the end of the journey is worth it. There is a crown of righteousness for those who press on, keeping their eyes on Jesus. – “Thank you for listening today! -If you enjoyed the show you can listen to all the past shows wherever you listen to podcasts. Today we are going to talk again about how important having a Barnabas in your life can be.
Welcome to the Kids Ministry and Leadership Podcast. This month we are exploring True Potential in your leaders and how to understand and nurture it. Show notes for this ep will be below.Check us out!WebsiteInstagramThe potential you see in other people isn't real. It is the projection of what you would do in their position. You see quite often we say “I can see potential in that person” but what we are actually doing is putting ourselves in their shoes with our skillset and not really unlocking THEIR POTENTIALOur goal is to understand how to see beyond our own projections and truly recognise and nurture the God-given potential in others. 1 Corinthians 12:4-6, Ephesians 2:10Understanding ProjectionProjection occurs when we impose our own values, desires, preferences and potential onto others. Romans 12:3 Henry Kissinger sad - The task of the leader is to get their people from where they are to where they have not been.'Dangers of ProjectionSamuel 16:7. Projecting our expectations onto others can lead to misguidance, frustration, and missed opportunities. This passage in Samuel shows how people look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.' We must seek to understand the true essence of individuals rather than judging based on our own perceptions."Jesus as a ModelJesus exemplified the model of recognising and nurturing individual potential. In John 13:13-17, He washes His disciples' feet, demonstrating servant leadership. Mark 10:45 - Jesus saw the unique roles and potential in each of His disciples and nurtured them accordingly."Ralph Nader: 'The function of leadership is to produce more leaders, not more followers.'Recognising True PotentialTo recognise true potential, we must seek God's wisdom and practice active listening. James 1:5 encourages us to ask God for wisdom. Proverbs 20:5When I think of this I am reminded of something I read that says - “The best leaders are those most interested in surrounding themselves with assistants and associates smarter than they are. They are frank in admitting this and are willing to pay for such talents.'1 Thessalonians 5:11Practical StepsHere are some practical steps to help recognise and nurture potential. Personal Reflection: Begin by acknowledging our own biases. Psalm 139:23-24. When a leader forces conformity through preference you kill intimacy between you and the leader as resentment grows and then intimacy with you and God also dies because you care more about performing to the preference than living out authenticallyOne-on-One Meetings isa other practical step - Spend time understanding individual goals. Spiritual Gifts Assessments are also super useful: Utilise tools to identify spiritual gifts so you know who is on your team. Mentorship and Coaching then bring this out: To sum that up I would say “A good leader leads the people from above them. A great leader leads the people from within them.'Building a Supportive CommunityA supportive community is vital for nurturing potential also. Romans 12:4-8 &1 Thessalonians 5:11 Case Study: Barnabas and Paul Barnabas provides a powerful example of recognising and nurturing potential. In Acts 11:25-26, we see Barnabas seeking out Saul (later Paul) and bringing him to Antioch, where they taught together for a year. Barnabas saw Paul's potential and played a crucial role in his development. This story teaches us the importance of identifying and nurturing potential in others, leading to significant impacts for the Kingdom."John Maxwell the known Leadership expert says- A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.'Hebrews 10:24 & Philippians 2:3-4.

IN THIS EPISODE: Assemble the Council! Plus: the Paul & Barnabas story takes an abrupt turn.
IN THIS EPISODE: the continued adventures of Paul & Barnabas
We take an invigorating journey through Acts 11, where we unwrap Peter's experience with Cornelius and the Apostles' reaction to Gentiles receiving the word of God. We confront the challenging divisions that arose among the circumcised believers and invite you to engage with us as we turn verses 1-18 inside out. Imagine the power of the Holy Spirit actively reshaping the New Testament Church. This episode takes you on a deep contemplation on how Jewish believers grappled with the salvation of the uncircumcised, and how the Holy Spirit became the evidence of believers across all nations. From Jesus' teachings to Nicodemus about spiritual rebirth and baptism, to reflections on how the Holy Spirit propels the growth of the New Testament Church, we explore it all. Finally, we take a profound look at how Jesus fulfills the Old Testament law, cutting through the cultural identity of the Jews, and the implications of His perfect and sinless death on the cross and resurrection. Learn how to apply principles from the Levitical Law to our lives and how living set-apart lives is at the heart of our worshipful obedience to Him. As we examine the mission of Paul and Barnabas in Antioch, we challenge you to think about the role of Christian missions in your life and the importance of dispelling myths and misconceptions in our churches. Enjoy this stimulating conversation and let the inspiring journey of learning and growth of Paul and Barnabas ignite a fresh perspective in your own ministry.
After Paul gets stoned, he and Barnabas head to Derbe to make more disciples. Then they go back to many of the cities they had already visited on their trip. They went to strengthen the churches and ensure they had what they needed to continue in the faith. In this message we learn the following: What is a disciple? How do we continue in the faith? What happens to backsliders? Many tribulations await those who follow Jesus. Healthy biblical churches are led by multiples pastors. This week Dave and Jeff take a close look at a well-known passage from ch. 14 of the Lukan history of the early church. As the apostles extend their preaching ministry into the Lycaonian region of Anatolia, they are mistaken for the gods Zeus and Hermes because of a miraculous healing Paul performs. The priest of Zeus wants to gin up a sacrifice, but the apostles risk life and limb, barely averting the ceremony. This story bears some interesting resemblance to a famous account in Ovid's Metamorphoses VIII of the old woman Baucis and her husband Philemon (and throw in the Christmas goose). Tune in for wide-ranging literary analysis of ξενία and more, possibly the worst pun Jeff has ever dropped, and a major programming announcement at the end. https://gofund.me/ad60e4a2
So many questions surround this mysterious book we call, the Bible. What is it all about? What's with the Old Testament violence? Is it a true historical narrative or is it mythical? And in this week's episode WE ANSWER NONE OF THEM! Instead, Jamie brings you one of her friends, Tracy Wilde-Pace, as they discuss what the Bible means to them and why they attribute the Bible to saving both their lives. Tracy shares with Jamie how a devastating loss drove her to the Bible and how she found, through a story about a boy named Joseph, a “meanwhile” in her own story. Enjoy as they hilariously hurricane all over scripture, fan girl over Paul, grieve about Moses, wish the prophets could take it down a notch emotionally and take sides on the Paul/Barnabas argument. They ask some tough questions, they get into the Bible vs. women assertion, they talk study tactics briefly but this is not a teaching on the authority and authenticity of scripture. Instead, this is a dialogue between 2 friends who fell in love with the same book, and hope you do too!

In our continuing study through Acts, we learn how to speak up by the example of Paul & Barnabas in Acts 14.
In Acts 13 Paul & Barnabas are sent as missionaries, spreading the word of God, but not all goes well. Listen in to learn how they handle adversity and continue to spread the goodness of God. We can learn much from their example about what it can look like to spread the goodness of God in our communities.

Paul &Barnabas are assaulted in Lycaonia by the Jews and Gentiles for preaching the Word of God.
Acts 13:3-12 We are studying the first missionary journey of Paul & Barnabas, learning from their faith and their works. In this sermon we find they have just arrived at Cyprus when their preaching is soon met with enemy resistance. What do we do when our gospel voice is met with voices of dissent? What does it mean to stand against the “wiles of the devil” when discouragement is often our natural response?

Who are we taking chances on? Entrusting others with their own autonomy and independence can be a worrisome thing, but early church leaders Paul & Barnabas were relentlessly empowering others into leadership at a fascinating rate. In this message Pastor T.D. invites us to trust God at a level of entrusting others into His care so we can catalyze newfound purpose for our lives.

This is a movement toward full incarnation. It leads you to become what you already are—a child of God; it lets you embody more and more the truth of your being; it makes you claim the God within you.” ~ Henri J. M. Nouwen (1932-1996)

Sermon on Acts 15-16
This evening our lesson is brought by associate minister Mark White. He brings our lesson from the relationships between Paul, Barnabas & John Mark.
Last week we looked at Paul's actions and God's actions that led to the Apostle's sermon before Jews and Gentiles in Galatia. Today we look at reactions to that groundbreaking sermon: reactions from Gentiles, Jews, and Paul & Barnabas themselves. Shockingly, Chris uses sports as his metaphor for all this. Apologies to the Hoetmer family, by the way!
Paul & Barnabas faced tremendous challenges, even as they spread the Gospel in amazing ways. It's a good reminder that we, too, will face adversity as we live our faith in the world today. May 13, 2017 - Cathedral Rectory - Superior, WI Fr. Andrew Ricci - www.studyprayserve.com

We continue our series on the key terms in our tagline (Community, Discipleship, and Mission) with this episode on Discipleship. Here's what we talk about: Icebreaker: Two Truths and a Lie; Different layers of community within the church; You need a Paul, Barnabas, and a Timothy in your life; There can be some overlap between Paul/Barnabas or Barnabas/Timothy; What ‘disciple' means and doesn't mean; TWO MINUTE CHALLENGE: David explains the history of discipleship; Check out “Dust” by Rob Bell for more explanation of the history of discipleship; Check out “Practicing the Way” sermon series by John Mark Comer; Jesus' discipleship isn't based on merit or earning his favor; 3 goals of discipleship: 1) Be with Jesus, 2) Become like Jesus, 3) Do what Jesus did; Being with Jesus means abiding in Jesus; Abiding in Jesus means practicing the spiritual disciplines like prayer and Bible reading; Abiding in Jesus means reorienting our consciousness to rest in the constant presence of God around you; Becoming like Jesus means cutting down on outward sins and practicing good works; Becoming like Jesus means having the mind of Christ not just the actions of Christ; Becoming like Jesus involves a change at the heart level; We become like Jesus through abiding; We become like Jesus in community; We become like Jesus through counseling; Establish a baseline in your discipleship by doing an inventory using a passage like: Galatians 5:22-23 1 Corinthians 13 2 Peter 1:5-8 Philippians 2:1-13 Romans 12 Doing what Jesus did means doing the following: preaching the Gospel, teaching the way, healing the sick, casting out demons, eating and drinking with people far from God, doing justice, peacemaking, praying, prophesying, standing up against religious and political corruption; We can't do what Jesus did on our own; All 3 of these goals are important///don't emphasize one at the expense of the others; Discipleship is an ongoing process RECOMMENDATION STATION Guy --- John Mark Comer @ Bridgetown Church “Practicing the Way” Sermon Series (http://bridgetown.church/teaching/) Bethany --- Google Docs (https://docs.google.com) David --- Discipleship Essentials by Greg Ogden (https://www.amazon.com/Discipleship-Essentials-Guide-Building-Christ/dp/0830810870/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1480633559&sr=8-1&keywords=greg+ogden) CONTEST WINNERS Congratulations to David Shoemaker and Chloe Weibel for winning our iTunes rating and review contest! When they had preached the gospel to that city and had made many disciples, they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch, strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and saying that through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God. And when they had appointed elders for them in every church, with prayer and fasting they committed them to the Lord in whom they had believed. (Acts 14:21-23 ESV) Progress = complication. That’s how I feel about our world. We live in a time where things are amazing! Technology has enabled amazing things in travel, in information, in medicine, in education, in 'you name it'. But to be honest, sometimes I day-dream about going back to simpler times, becoming a kid again with less complications. Unfortunately, I think we often treat the Christian life the same way. We think that progress = complication. A deeper spiritual life means discovering secret paths to growth. Or we read books that tell us specifically how to pray, read, parent, live, etc. And after awhile we get tired, frustrated, and then just overwhelmed. We feel like a failure. But is that the Christian life? This week, we take another look at Paul & Barnabas’ first missionary journey. As they continue on their adventure, I want us to discover the simple Christian life they taught. Take some time to read through Acts 13-14. Also, I want to encourage you to invite someone. Or if you haven’t seen someone at church in a while, why not give them a call, write a note, or email them.
