The Net Promoter System Podcast – Customer Experience Insights from Loyalty Leaders
Episode 241: When is mastering the basics a differentiator? In an industry where complexity is the norm, Prudential Group Insurance has made a counterintuitive strategic choice. While many companies chase innovation through digital transformation and enhanced features, Prudential has discovered that operational excellence—the "absence of noise"—can be a more powerful differentiator. Abhii Parakh and Mike Estep reveal why group insurance demands a fundamentally different approach to customer experience than high-touch industries like hospitality or travel. For Prudential, success depends not on bells and whistles, but on excelling at the foundational elements: reliable execution, friction-free processes, and consistent delivery. "The absence of noise is a tremendous win," Mike emphasizes. "That's not the long-term goal for us. But if you don't get those things right, you won't get the chance to get to the nirvana state where you are separating yourself from the competition because of the experiences you created.” Learn how Prudential delivers seamless experiences across its ecosystem of brokers, employers, and employees by prioritizing simplicity and operational excellence. Discover why, in complex B2B2C environments, flawless execution of core processes can be a more powerful differentiator than feature innovation. The last thing you want to deal with is friction with your group insurance carrier—about reports, getting your commission check, or that we're screwing up the bill and you're getting heat from that client. It doesn't need to be rocket science. There's beauty in simplicity and intuitive experiences that are void of friction.” [00:08:31] “The absence of noise is a tremendous win. Employers have been saying for years that they can't absorb any more cost growth for health insurance; health plans feel like they've squeezed about as much juice as possible out of traditional cost mitigation levers. Both are looking for creative alternatives to curb rising health costs. Enter ICHRAs. Usually, when we talk about the health insurance landscape, we focus on Medicare, Medicaid, or employer-sponsored insurance. But roughly 21 million people in the US are covered by individual marketplace plans, and in 2020, a new type of plan hit the individual market, moving health insurance from a “defined benefit” to a “defined contribution” in an effort to curb employer health costs. In this episode, host Abby Burns invites Advisory Board health plan expert Morghen Philippi to shed light on what Individual Coverage Health Reimbursement Arrangements, or ICHRAs, actually are, how employers, plans, and providers are responding to their rise, and what leaders need to keep an eye on when it comes to these plans. Note: This episode was recorded prior to the 2024 elections. Given the results, it is unlikely that the enhanced subsidies referenced in this episode will be renewed, which will affect the health of the individual marketplace. If enhanced subsidies expire at the end of 2025, you can expect it to have a direct impact on the individual market and on ICHRA viability, specifically. That said, because of the first Trump administration's role in establishing the ICHRA model, the incoming administration may work to support ICHRA growth. One of the most common areas of confusion investors have throughout their lives involves insurance. How much coverage is enough? And there are so many types of coverage – which is best for my needs and my situation? There are so many issues to consider when reviewing various plans. In today's episode, Patti defines the various coverages and explains the scenarios that determine which coverage is best. It is the next in the podcast series, #AskPattiBrennan - a series of episodes in which Patti answers one of her listener's frequently asked questions. The many layers of the leave law world can sometimes feel, well endless. In this important episode of Take it or Leave It, we explore one specific layer of family and medical leave – disability and family leave as classes of insurance – that differs from but is interconnected with the paid family and medical leave mandates proliferating around the country (i.e., in Oregon with the Paid Leave Oregon program beginning in September 2023, in Colorado with the Colorado FAMLI program coming online in January 2024, and so forth). To help navigate what disability insurance and family leave insurance are and what these offerings entail, host Joshua Seidman sits down with Cindy Goff, Vice President, Supplemental Benefits and Group Insurance at American Council of Life Insurers (or ACLI). Together, they explore the scope of and differences between disability and family leave insurance, the dynamics of how these offerings are structured and how they compare to paid family and medical leave mandates, recent activity in the space, and how these classes of insurance can impact potential future federal paid family and medical leave.

Free Wealth Building Tools & ResourcesLet's talk about small business health insurance options. I'm only covering a small snippet of small business health insurance options here. You really do need to talk to a health insurance agent about the specific options that exist for you, both in your state and based on the unique factors of your company and your team.Group Insurance for Small BusinessYou're not required to have a group insurance plan for your business until you have 50 team members or more. But if you're in an industry like mine where the talent is really competitive, you may need to consider having some sort of a health insurance benefit before you get to 50 employees, mostly to have some sort of attraction level for A players. Personal Health Insurance for a Business OwnerWhen it comes to your personal insurance, if you don't have a group plan, you can go out and get a private plan by talking to any health insurance agent. Based on your income, you may or may not qualify for health subsidies. So again, it's really important that you talk to a qualified health insurance agent so they can walk you through all those details. How to Write-Off Your Health Insurance PremiumsThese instructions are specifically for an S-Corp.We see this done incorrectly all the time. The two biggest mistakes we see are either not paying for it out of the business, or not picking it up on their W2. Pay for your health insurance out of your business as an S Corporation. Pay the premium out of your business and book it as a health insurance expense. As the owner of the S Corp, assuming you own more than 2%, which in our case almost all of our clients do, you have to pick up your health insurance amount on your W2 as Additional Income. Then when you file your personal tax return, there is a spot on your personal tax return called Adjustments to Income and you put your health insurance amount there so that it is reducing your taxable income.Consult with Qualified ProfessionalsThere are many small business health insurance options for both your business and you personally as the owner, even if you don't have group insurance. But again, get a good health insurance agent on your side and a qualified accounting professional to help you write-off your health insurance the right way. It's very easy to do for an accountant. But like I just explained, there are multiple steps to make sure it happens the right way. By using a professional, you get the max benefit without getting in trouble by doing it the wrong way. But, if you're an agency owner, your CSR is the key to whether or not you sell off insurance, whether you know it or not.” - Josh Callahan “I think we can show any agency, whether you're a one-man shop with one CSR. If you've got 40 people, that's the kind of people we're working with right now, and we're excited about what it's going to look like.” - Josh Callahan “The biggest thing is making sure your CSRs are not scared and they're able to just transition into it. It's amazing. They get better and better every time, once they realize how people are willing to talk to you about it.” - Josh Callahan Resources Mentioned: Josh Callahan C Group Insurance Agency Final Expense Solutions Kelly Donahue-Piro LinkedIn Agency Performance Partners

Listening In (With Permission): Conversations About Today's Pressing Health Care Topics
Andréa Caballero, MPA, speaks with Linda Schwimmer, JD, President and CEO of the New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute (Quality Institute) to learn about a pressing issue: the health of New Jersey’s Small Group Insurance Market. This market, which covers employers with 2-50 employees in the Garden State, is on the precipice of a downward spiral. At its height, it covered upward of 1 million consumers, but now its enrollment is hovering at about 300k consumers with the further threat of adverse selection creating an imbalanced risk pool. Without doing something to address this issue, the small group market, which offers small businesses a secure option for comprehensive health insurance, may effectively disappear in the Garden State. New Jersey is not alone; due to the COVID-19 pandemic as well as changes in health insurance regulations in the U.S., there is concern for the health of small group insurance markets all across the country. Linda Schwimmer explores how the health of the small group market impacts self-funded employers, the rise of alternative employer-sponsored health plans known as level-funded insurance, and, finally, what the short and long-term policy solutions are for strengthening the small group market. Interestingly, regulations that prohibit the use of high-value purchasing strategies, like site of service-based payments, reference pricing, and preferred drug lists, may be negatively impacting the small group market. While this episode strays a bit from CPR’s focus in self-funded health care coverage, it provides important insights on the interconnectedness of the health insurance ecosystem at large. As Linda points out, when one insurance market is suffering, there are implications for the health system as a whole. For more information on this topic, read the Quality Institute’s July 2020 White Paper, “Short and Long-Term Strategies to Support Health Care Affordability and Price Transparency for Small Employers and Consumers in New Jersey. https://www.njhcqi.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/Short-and-Long-Term-Strategies-to-Support-Health-Care-Affordability-and-Price-Transparency-for-Small-Employers-and-Consumers-in-New-Jersey.pdf

Thoughts on Record: Podcast of the Ottawa Institute of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
Despite Canadian group insurance plans managing upwards of 35 billion dollars a year, mental health clinicians frequently experience significant frustration with respect to accessing the funds required to effectively treat their clients - especially those with more severe presentations. Co-founder of Cubic Health Inc., Mr. Mike Sullivan RPh, BSP, MBA joins Dr. Pete Kelly, C.Psych for an in-depth discussion of how innovations in the management and allocation of funds held in large self-funded insurance plans could hold the key to revolutionizing the treatment of mental illness. In this fascinating discussion, Mike and Pete discuss the market gaps that led to the development of Cubic Health, the basic organization and components of the insurance industry in Canada, Mike's observations around where the insurance industry has stagnated, especially around the provision of mental health services, the use of analytics in analyzing and optimizing the provision of insurance benefits, trends in psychotropic medication in Canada, innovations in large group plans that could free up millions in financial resources for the effective treatment of mental illness, the responsibilities of clinicians within the insurance system to foster innovation, and finally, consideration of dynamics around short and long-term disability with respect to mental illness. Mike also shares personal reflections on the stressors (and opportunities) of running a growing business, observations on leadership and some of his favourite books related to leadership, interpersonal effectiveness and growth. Mr. Mike Sullivan, co-founded Cubic Heath Inc. in 2003 in an era when start-ups venturing into the mix of technology and healthcare, especially in the world of employee benefits, had limited access to capital. Fast forward 17 years later, there still is not another company in Canada in Cubic’s space, which for those of us concerned with mental health is concerning because it underlines how slow to change the group insurance industry has been traditionally, although as we will discuss, things are really beginning to change. Cubic has built a proprietary clinical and analytics infrastructure focused on making employee health benefit plans more efficient and sustainable. Cubic's focus as an independent benefit plan analytics and clinical solutions company is the intersection of Mike’s background as a Pharmacist and his post-graduate studies in Finance. Cubic has evolved into the largest clinical team in the employee benefits industry in Canada, supported by a team of talented Data Scientists, Business Intelligence experts, Developers and Information Systems professionals. Cubic’s clients are primarily large single- and multi-employer benefit plans ranging size from 500 to 650,000 employee lives. A frequent speaker across North America on benefit plan design and management, Mike has also appeared on CBC, BNN, and in the Globe & Mail. He is a regular columnist for Benefits Canada magazine and serves as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Toronto.www.cubichealth.ca

In this episode, I was lucky enough to sit down with Kevin Ryan, Director of Employee Benefits at Principal, and we talked about the importance of employer-provided income protection. "I have it at work" is one of the most common responses of individuals when asked about their income replacement strategy in the case of an injury or illness preventing them from earning an income. While this response is valid, the level of income protection that some people think they have may not be. Kevin and I go over the most common items that are overlooked when creating a base protection plan with Group Insurance, and how a supplemental offering of Individual coverage over the top is a sound strategy for those who may "outgrow" the base-level protection of Group.

Senator Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced today there would be no vote on the Graham-Cassidy bill, citing a lack of support amongst the Republican bloc. While there are whispers around Capitol Hill that the bill will be back with revisions and amendments, is repeal and replace officially dead? Where does this leave the future of healthcare reform? Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.), one of three Republican senators to come out publicly against the bill, wants to create a system of co-op organizations that could cross state lines, and could be built out of existing healthcare infrastructure. Senator Paul joined Steele & Ungar to discuss his vision for healthcare reform, how to address our predicament with North Korea and the future of tax cuts. Jacqueline Klimas, national security reporter for Politico, talks about reporting from Puerto Rico and whether the U.S. government is really doing everything it can to provide aid during this humanitarian crisis.
