In tis episode I am joined by Andrew Male who is the Southern Territory Manager at Kinetics Group. Andrew leads the Kinetics business in the South Island and has a deep and varied background across multiple business areas. Kinetics Group (www.kinetics.co.nz) was established over 25 years ago and is an award-winning IT support and solutions company who specialise in supporting medium sized businesses with their IT needs. Andrew talks with me about the ongoing cyber threats faced by NZ businesses in 2025 alongside some of the steps businesses can take to protect themselves from malicious actors. Andrew discusses some salutary real-world situations that bring home the very real threat faced by businesses in the cyber sphere. To say this is no joke is an absolute understatement. Taking cyber risk seriously and tackling it in a meaningful and ongoing way are now non-negotiable for all business owners. It is not a question of if you will get hit it is merely a question of when! If you are worried about these risks or want to understand how you might look to approach them then give this episode a listen. Is there a topic you want covered or a person you want to hear from? You can contact us through the Godfreys Law website, or you can message the Godfreys Law Facebook page. We'd like to hear from you, and any ideas you have about making the podcast better. They discuss the influence of the band Love and Probe Records, the epicenter of Liverpool's musical zeitgeist. (Thank you Hitoma Drone and Andrew Male!) And they learn about Cosmic Scouse. "Strange stories" is the way Robert Aickman (1914-1981) described his fiction and to be honest that's putting it mildly. When he wasn't writing fiction that leaves both his protagonists and his readers in some very weird places, he was involved in an investigation into the haunting of Borley Rectory, was a member of The Ghost Club and he also co-founded the British Inland Waterways Association to restore canals. Matthew Sweet is joined by three fans of his work - critic Suzy Feay, writer Andrew Male and publisher R.B. Russell. Producer: Torquil MacLeod Robert Aickman published the following collections of stories: Powers of Darkness (1966), Sub Rosa (1968), Cold Hand in Mine (1976), Tales of Love and Death (1977) and Intrusions (1980) You can find other spooky Free Thinking episodes including a discussion of Ghost Stories with Irving Finkel and Jeremy Dyson, a ghost hunt in Portsmouth and a discussion of Blade Runner and a programme about the TV programme Ghostwatch

This Hallowe'en episode of Backlisted focusses on the collection of ‘uncanny' stories by Henry James, first gathered together under the title The Altar of the Dead and Other Tales to form the seventeenth volume of the New York Edition of his Collected Works in 1917. We are joined, as ever, by our resident spook-master Andrew Male, and by acclaimed novelist and Henry James aficionado Tessa Hadley. We each choose a story to present and read from - these are tackled in chronological order to better trace the evolution of James's famously dense and challenging late style . Before that Andy confesses his admiration for I Used to Live Here Once, Miranda Seymours' new biography of Jean Rhys and reads a short Jean Rhys ghost story, while John revisits Giving Up the Ghost, Hilary Mantel's haunting (and haunted) memoir. We consider Briggs's life and work in full: Father Christmas, The Snowman, When the Wind Blows, Ethel & Ernest and the sepulchral Time For Lights Out (2019), his latest - and perhaps last - book; we also hear several times from the (often very funny) author himself. Is It Rolling, Bob? Talking Dylan

Music journalist Andrew Male begins by examining “the humour that turns sour… the madness” of Bob’s 1965 “speedy, hipster world”, the “fascinating cruelty” of Dont Look Back and Eat The Document (“he couldn’t stand that close to the flame anymore”). He goes on: “if you’re interested in Dylan, you have to see it as a grand narrative, even the points that you flinch from.” This episode bounces between Elvis’s version of “I Shall Be Released”, Dylan doing his “Movie Elvis” voice on “Spanish Is The Loving Tongue” and New Morning, “Dylan’s first religious album, but the religion is Buddhism: the lyrics are like koans”. Was that Dylan on harmonica in George Harrison’s version of “If Not For You”? Was “Father Of Night” Dylan’s examination of his Jewish faith? Andrew offers more questions than answers on this one, which is how it should be. Join us. Andrew Male, former deputy editor of Mojo magazine and film lecturer at Warwick University, has been writing about music, books, film, radio & TV for the past twenty-five years.
