The guys begin by talking about the recent update on Ancestry's ethnicity report. Then, a family tree on MyHeritage has provided a rescue line to Norway for a family in Ukraine. Catch the details. A pair of ticket stubs from the night President Lincoln was shot have been auctioned off. Wait til you hear what they went for! An adoptee from South Korea recently received an email that has changed her life. Find out what happened. Meanwhile, another adoptee from Vietnam had a Covid dream about a brother he knew nothing about… and guess what?! And finally, a mummified man in Pennsylvania is finally being buried after nearly 130 years and his name has now been found. Next, in two parts, Dr. Blaine Bettinger, the Genetic Genealogist, talks with Fisher about unlinked family clusters among our DNA matches and then what is happening with genealogy and artificial intelligence. David then returns for two more questions on Ask Us Anything. That's all this week on Extreme Genes, America's Family History Show!

Day 162 Today's Reading: 2 Corinthians 13 Charles Schwab's CEO, Walt Bettinger, opened the vault to the Schwab test he uses for potential high-level hires. He told the New York Times that we can discover a person's character by the ways they respond during times of great pressure and distress. So before each new hire, to test out the job candidate to see how they react when things don't go according to plan, Bettinger takes the potential employee out for a breakfast interview. What the candidate doesn't know is that before they arrive, Bettinger asks the restaurant staff to purposefully mess up the order in exchange for a substantial tip. His “wrong order” test helps him see how prospective hires deal with adversity. “Are they upset, are they frustrated, or are they understanding? Life is like that, and business is like that,” he said. “It's just another way to look inside their heart rather than their head.” In the same interview with the Times, Bettinger shared one of his own biggest failures. After spending hours studying for a final college exam, he went to class ready to figure out calculations. Instead the professor handed to each student a blank sheet of paper. “The professor said, ‘I've taught you everything I can teach you about business in the last ten weeks,” Bettinger recalled. “But the most important message, the most important question, is this: What's the name of the lady who cleans this building?” Bettinger had no idea. He failed the exam, got a B in the class, and ruined his 4.0 average. But it taught him an important lesson on recognizing individuals “who do the real work.” “That had a powerful impact,” he said. “Her name was Dottie, and I didn't know Dottie. I'd seen her, but I'd never taken the time to ask her name.” Since then, he admits he's “tried to know every Dottie I've worked with.” That failure in college became an important reminder of what truly matters in life. Two tests that people never saw coming. The wrong-order test and the name-of-the-lady test. We encounter a very important we-never-saw-it-coming test in today's chapter. The apostle Paul goes all “Charles Schwab” on the church people. It's sobering. After coming to the end of 2 Corinthians, we are almost blindsided by the “clear your desk and take out a piece of paper” announcement—which means a test is coming: Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you—unless indeed you fail the test? But I trust that you will realize that we ourselves do not fail the test. (2 Corinthians 13:5-6) I hate tests. But this is one I can't take lightly. This is not for a science or an English grade. This is about eternity. So now the big questions: How do we test ourselves? How do we ensure we don't fail this test? Paul tells us it's a test to recognize if Jesus is in you. D Martyn Lloyd Jones said: “A Christian is the result of the operation of God, nothing less, nothing else. No man can make himself a Christian; God alone makes Christians.” So how do we examine ourselves to see if we are in the faith? Since God does the birthing, we should have His birthmarks. God gave us some birthmarks if we have been born again. Birthmarks that look like His family likeness. We find those in 1 John. The apostle John uses the phrase born of God over and over, giving us the birthmark. If we are born of God, then we have the life of God and we pass the test. Let me give you a few of those birthmarks, which can help us on the “see if you are in the faith” test. The righthander has allowed two earned runs or fewer in five of his past nine games. In two starts against the Brewers the righthander allowed four earned runs in eleven innings. David begins by explaining a case of serendipity from which he was the recent beneficiary. Hear what happened! David then shares a great project opportunity for all of us… transcribing anti-slavery manuscripts at the Boston Public Library. It’s something you can do from home! A tribe in California has regained possession of some of their ancestral land. Hear about the tribe and how it came to pass. Then, a 52-year-old cold case has been solved by an amateur genealogist. He had the needed clue to identify a Jane Doe murder victim from 1968! David then talks about a photographer who has taken photos of descendants of famous ancestors in the look of their ancestors’ times. The results are remarkable. Fisher then visits with Dr. Blaine Bettinger about Ancestry.com’s recent announcement that they are raising the threshold for a “match” from six centimorgans to eight. How can we best preserve the six to seven centimorgan matches we already have and how might this change affect our genetic genealogy research? Dr. Bettinger has some thoughts. Fisher and Blaine Bettinger then talk about Keepsake DNA, the new lab that just opened in Salt Lake City that allows genealogists to submit old envelopes, false teeth, hats, glasses and countless other items that may lead to DNA profiles of ancestors long since dead. How useful might these profiles from long ago be in breaking through brick walls? Dr. Bettinger explains his hopeful forecast. David then returns for Ask Us Anything. The guys begin by answering a question about cattle marks and family history. Then, what is the story with British censuses? How come the US has already released its 1940 census and Britain has only released through 1911? When might we get another census from across the pond? David explains the reasons and issues, and what is to come. Eventually. That’s all this week on Extreme Genes, America’s Family History Show!

On 14 November 2019, the U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) proposed a sudden and unprecedented 492% increase in fees required to access historical records held by the USCIS Genealogy Program. Many of these records should already be publicly accessible under the law. The USCIS is essentially holding them hostage, demanding individuals pay exorbitant and unjustifiable fees to access documents of our immigrant ancestors. Part 2 of 3 – Let's Talk Mental Health – How to Find Meaning in ‘Problem Behaviour' ft Geert Bettinger author of Moving on by Standing Still As we steadily build our #mentalhealthawareness it is important to not overlook the behavioural traits of people that are going through or have gone through traumatic life events, developmental disabilities and mental illness including dementia. To help us better understand how to separate the behaviour from the person, we welcome via Skype Geert Bettinger author of Moving on by Standing Still to The Mic Drop Club. This groundbreaking book was written to challenge our perceptions on ‘Problem Behaviour' by questioning our values, beliefs and attitudes. His book has taken him around the world and is fast becoming the de-facto book to changing the culture of care to one that champions the patients experience, needs, wishes and feelings.  “Is the behaviour a problem for you or the individual?” I had the pleasure of co-delivering a care planning module with Geert to pre-registered Nurses at Kingston University. Our approach was described as electric, the students were able to explore his methods through role-play, addressing key issues such as patient empowerment, embracing silence, remaining open and non-judgemental whilst acknowledging that the patient is the expert based on their lived experience with the illness. The care professional is there to support them on the journey to recovery. “The time has come to re-educate the educators” This interview was facilitated by Skype as Geert is based in the Netherlands, #TheMicdropClub would like to extend an extra special Thank you to Geert Bettinger for this insightful interview and wish him every success in changing care practices around the world. This approach allows everyone to build or rebuild the foundation for solid research. You can, of course, use portions of the written courses or videos for the topics for which you have an immediate need. However, we guarantee that you will find important new "Aha! moments" in each course or lesson. Why Parents Don’t Vaccinate

http://traffic.libsyn.com/radiohealthjournal/RHJ_19-22A.mp3 Measles had been declared eliminated in 2000, but has come roaring back because of the increasing number of people who have not been vaccinated. Parents may have legitimate fears of side effects, but claims that vaccines are unsafe are not true. Experts discuss the complicated psychological reasons vaccine refusal exists despite this, and what may help change minds to promote public health. Dr. Julie Bettinger is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the Vaccine Evaluation Center at The University of British Columbia. Bettinger says that health care providers like to see 90 percent of the population vaccinated to avoid the further spread of any disease. When a majority of the population is vaccinated, it protects the people who cannot be, like infants under two months of age or cancer patients. Dr. Mark Navin, Associate Professor of Philosophy at Oakland University studies what makes people decide to vaccinate or not. He says that most parents are persuaded by trusted family doctors who urge the importance of immunization. When more clarification is given from a trusted provider, people often go forward with vaccination. But even after talking to a doctor, some parents still oppose vaccination. Kristen O’Meara is one parent who held this view. Before eventually deciding to vaccinate her children, O’Meara opposed the idea after discussing it with a physician, who in her eyes was condescending and dismissive about her legitimate questions. She stresses that the best thing a doctor can do is listen and take questions seriously, in order to address concerns and help parents to make the best decision for both their children and the public. According to Avnika Amin, a researcher and PhD student at Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University, the decision to vaccinate depends on the way we judge right and wrong. What goes into the decision is much more than simply facts – emotions, fears, and values also play a role. Guests: Dr. Julie Bettinger, Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Vaccine Evaluation Center, University of British Columbia Dr. Mark Navin, Associate Professor of Philosophy, Oakland University Kristen O’Meara, parent and former vaccine opponent Avnika Amin, Rollins School of Public Health, Emory University Links for more information: Scientific American – “How to Understand, and Help, the Vaccine Doubters” Julie Bettinger, PhD, MPH – University of British Columbia Mark Navin, PhD – Oakland University “Emerging from the Herd” – Kristen O’Meara – Voices for Vaccines

The Genealogy Guys are using their new sound mixer beginning with this episode. Visit our blog for details about the new equipment. Sincere thanks go out to our sponsors and generous Patreon supporters for making this improvement possible. The Guys discuss their great experiences at the 2019 Podfest Multimedia Expo. News You Can Use MyHeritage has added 7.1 million records of Norwegian Censuses in four collections. The Canadian Research Knowledge Network has made more than 60 million pages of digitized Canadian heritage documents accessible. Findmypast has added 23 million new U.S. marriages to its site for searching. Drew recaps free FamilySearch record additions. Blaine T. Bettinger and the DNA segment This week's discussion between Blaine and Drew focuses on recent announcements from MyHeritage regarding their new DNA tools: AutoCluster and the Theory of Family Relativity. Our Listeners Talk to Us Listener response to a call for how you use spreadsheets in your research has been strong. Another Laura tells us she uses spreadsheets when extracting from indexes; to compile each year's data when doing city directory research; and to create a combination timeline/family group sheet/timeline. Sherry paid for a DNA test for a cousin who has since died. Are there legal questions she should be aware of if she wants to submit the data to GEDmatch? Bill reports that he has had problems with Ancestry tree data disappearing from RootsMagic. He believes it is an API problem. George heard from another friend on Sunday who has experienced the same problem. Tom reports that the new Ancestry beta color coding tag system has rendered a Google extension inoperable. Drew tells how to opt out of the Ancestry beta. Spencer shares two important topics: Masonic records include applications to join and these can contain much genealogical information. The librarian at the Webster Memorial Library in Decatur, Van Buren County, Michigan, plans to break up the collections placed there by the Van Buren Regional Genealogical Society. Some materials would be moved to a basement and would no longer be accessible by researchers. Email to the Van Buren Library Board of Directors Chairman, Bruce Cutting, at cutting@ontrakcom.com to complain about this situation is welcome. The Guys make suggestions about written agreements that should be created and signed to clarify such situations. Host Scott Fisher opens the show with David Allen Lambert, Chief Genealogist of the New England Historic Genealogical Society and AmericanAncestors.org.  David begins the segment talking about how you can preserve the history of your Christmas ornaments. David recently observed that he still has ornaments from his mother’s childhood in the 1930s, and several from his own youth, and notes, what happens when they are lost or broken? The guys then kick off Family Histoire News talking about a recent story where an African-American woman was shocked to receive DNA results indicating she was not African-American. Then, facial recognition technology is being used to help identify unidentified Civil War photos. The guys explain how the tech may help you in other areas in the future. Who would have ever thought a toy monkey could reunite a family separated by the Holocaust? It has happened! Hear the details. David’s Blogger Spotlight this week shines on Claire Santry of Irishgenealogynews.com. Claire is constantly keeping Irish researchers up to speed on Ireland’s ongoing efforts to share records for free on line. Next, Fisher visits with renowned DNA specialist Blaine Bettinger. Blaine is excited about new DNA technology that may be able to reveal to you the full profile of your long deceased ancestors through the analysis of old, licked envelopes. Hear what Blaine has to say about the benefits to your research and the potential costs. In a second segment, Fisher and Blaine talk about the ethics issues involved in the use of DNA on GEDMatch for solving horrific cold cases. Tom Perry comes on next to talk preservation. Fisher has discovered some ancient equipment in his home… an old reel-to-reel tape recorder and a movie projector and screen. Hear what Tom says Fisher should do with these items and similar old equipment. Tom then talks about proper storage for the materials you’re still waiting to have transferred. Does the client know what to expect, what results you are likely or not likely to find, what they will receive as an end product and when you will communicate with them and how? If you see any gaps – make some changes. Provide existing and potential clients with the information they need up front. If you're a public speaker, revisit the titles and descriptions of your talk.
