On today's episode, I am thrilled to introduce Ayodeji Matuluko to the podcast. Ayodeji started her journey into pharmacy at the University of Lagos, Nigeria. To date, she has 10 years of broad experience in community and hospital pharmacy, public health, medical communications and global health research. During our conversation, we hear about her passion for learning and how the courses she has embarked on have opened doors and enhanced her opportunities within this profession. - She graduated from Univeristy of Lagos, Nigeria, in 2012 with a BPharm - She then completed an MSc in Clinical Pharmacy, International Practice and Policy at University College London (UCL) in 2016 - She then started fellowship training with West African Postgraduate College of Pharmacists but realised that this course didn't quite align with what she wanted to achieve so instead embarked on a PhD instead - Her Doctor in Philosophy (PhD) in Feasibility and Acceptability of an Intervention(s) to Enhance Antimicrobial Stewardship in Hospitals will hopefully be completed in June 2023 Our conversation focuses a lot of time on her motivation to become a better person and a better professional. Her experience to date indicates how determined she is to learn and how much she enjoys taking this knowledge and applying into practice in her roles as a pharmacist. Her passion for education aligns with her long-term vision to be part of the growth of clinical pharmacy and the development of pharmacy-led services in Nigeria where these are not well developed. We also spent a lot of time discussing the value of increasing your network and how this has led to so many incredible opportunities and evolved her interests within the profession. Some of these opportunities/highlights include: - Joining the LiveWell Initiative (LWI) as a postgraduate intern/academy officer. She picked up important skills, quickly learnt how to work and collaborate with people from different disciplines and was recognised as the best intern that year - Serving within the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) Young Pharmacist Group and leading the publication of a first-of-its-kind “Career development toolkit for early career pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists” in 2020. She was also selected by McKinsey & Company as a Next Generation Women Leader for 2021 - Being selected as an an FIPWise Rising Star in 2022. A programme that recognises women in pharmaceutical sciences and pharmacy education for their progress and achievements to support others; those who are pathfinders in their fields, who are rising in their careers and who deserve to be recognised. High-quality listening has a lot of power to impact challenging conversations, engagement, and burnout. And we are only at the beginning of learning about the potential of listening and what is possible. In this episode, we dive into current research and open questions.   Guy Itzchakov, an Associate Professor in the Department of Human Services at University of Haifa, shares what he is discovering empirically about listening.  His research focuses on high quality listening as an avenue for growth at  individual and organizational levels. He also studies attitude ambivalence, attitude-behavior relationships, and goal setting. Guy graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy - PhD focused in General Business Administration and Management from The Hebrew University.    In this episode, Guy shares how cultivating a climate of listening and genuinely getting interested in other people helps motivation, engagement, provides higher psychological safety that help avoid emotional exhaustion, and lowers turnover in an organization. "When you listen, you are not invisible. On the contrary, you are actually the one who sets the tone." - Guy Itzchakov    Listen IN Notes:   01:13 - What he is discovering further about listening after the last podcast recording: "The more I study listening, the more I realize how much depth this topic has, and how much there is more to discover."   04:24 - Differentiating in-person versus online listening   11:23 - Sharing studies about how speakers are affected by being listened to.   18:26 - Looking forward to the day when people discover the benefits of effective listening though experiences   20:39 - Talking about a project published recently:   Whether being listened to can reduce a speaker's loneliness when they talk about being socially rejected.   24:35 - Difference between moderate listening and high quality listening   27:51 - Manager listening versus colleague listening   32:16 - Touching on research about how to sell ideas to stakeholders   34:35 - What often happens when we wait before we reply, listen before we react   35:50 - What managers in organizations can do to support listening: "I think first is awareness of the importance of listening."   38:34 - Getting an idea of what a listening climate looks like   42:19 - How to listen in disagreements    48:53 - Talking about the concept of self-insight   50:19 - What good listening can do to disagreements: "I think it can create more harmony during the disagreement."    54:11 - How to do more effective listening   57:27 - Cultivating a listening attitude and having genuine interest in other people and in what they say Key Takeaways:   "When speakers felt listened to well, versus in the moderate level, they reported less deep loneliness." - Guy Itzchakov   "When you talk about the evidence of listening in the organization, it's the realization of how listening is important. That listening is not passive behavior. It's not just you being silent and nodding your head…It's much more." - Guy Itzchakov   "When cultivating a listening climate, it's not enough that the manager says , 'You know, I have an open door policy, you can talk to me whenever you want'. They need to show it." - Guy Itzchakov   "Listening during disagreements leads to a higher sense of connection as perceived by the speaker with the listener, more knowledge about one's attitude, self-insights, and it has downstream effects on the structure of the attitude." - Guy Itzchakov   "I don't think listening can shift an attitude during a disagreement unless under very specific circumstances. But I do believe that it can create more harmony during the disagreement." - Guy Itzchakov   "Be aware that there is a lot of supporting evidence about how active the role of the listener is in shaping the conversation and the consequences." - Guy Itzchakov   Notes/Mentions:   Evidence on Listening Training and Workplace Performance with Guy Itzchakov   Barbara Lee Fredrickson:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbara_Fredrickson   Impact Stories https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55AdBSq0BvA   Connect with Guy Itzchakov:   LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/guy-itzchakov-05921060/ https://hw.haifa.ac.il/en/people/human/gitzchako   Connect with Raquel Ark: www.listeningalchemy.com Mobile: + 491732340722 contact@listeningalchemy.com LinkedIn

Dr. David T. Susman didn't have to travel too far from his hometown of Tazewell, VA to begin his undergraduate career in psychology at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA. He originally was going to pursue a career as a medical doctor but soon realized he wasn't as interested in the pre-med courses as he was in the psychology courses so he decided “that would be a more interesting major” for him. In this podcast, I learned that Dr. Susman leads an active and engaged life in the field of psychology and has become a mental health advocate. In addition to his BA in Psychology, he earned two master's degrees and a PhD on his way to become a licensed psychologist in Kentucky. Dr. Susman shares how he returned to his alma mater, University of Kentucky, to become an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology and the Director of the Jesse G. Harris, Jr. Psychological Services Center which is the training clinic for graduate students where he says they “learn to do psychotherapy and psychological assessment.” He works with all of the clinical psychology graduate students through their clinical training at the Harris Psychological Services Center where he has been the Director since 1996. After completing his graduate work and two internships, Dr. Susman began looking for a full-time job. He applied for a position at Eastern State Hospital which is a large public adult psychiatric hospital in Lexington, KY. They hired him and he thought “maybe I'll work here a couple of years and then I'll go out and start my private practice and then ended up working at Eastern State for 24 ½ years.” This is where he was the Founding Director of the Hospital Recovery Mall which is an award-winning recovery and rehabilitation program for adults with serious mental illness and substance misuse. Dr. Susman is currently serving on the APA Board of Directors and is Chair Elect for 2022 of the Council of Leadership Team. He provides an overview of the APA, its Societies and Divisions, as well as an analogy of the APA's “executive branch” and “legislative branch” to better understand APA governance and his dual role. Dr. Susman is a natural teacher as he consistently shares poignant advice to those interested in psychology including what to consider when selecting a psychology graduate program or school, a discussion on the differences between a PsyD and PhD, and some resources and lesser-known groups available to those interested in clinical psychology (e.g., APTC and NAMI). You can hear more about his thoughts on choosing a PsyD or PhD about 8 minutes into our conversation. Dr. Susman also started his own blog at the end of 2014 as “another platform to be able to talk about mental health advocacy and to raise awareness.” In this blog, he shares “Stories of Hope” where there are over 100 interviews, or personal accounts, of people who have gone on their own journeys of recovery. When he returned, he applied to graduate schools and found that it was competitive, but he was able to attend the University of Arizona where he received his master's degree in Child Development and Family Relations. He then applied to graduate schools again and this time he was accepted into the Industrial Organizational Psychology program at Purdue University where he received his second master's degree. When he applied to doctoral programs, he found a home with Ball State University where he received his PhD in Counseling Psychology. In this podcast, Dr. Daniel T. Moore shares more about his academic and professional journey and discusses where he received most of his practical experience. He also worked in the Military (Navy and Army) as a psychologist and admits this gave him more experience that he could apply to his clients when he opened his own private practice in Petal, MS. Your Family Clinic, LLC is a private practice where independent psychologists work and take a Holistic approach to psychology. Indeed, the website for Your Family Clinic, LLC is a collection of materials and information related to Holistic Psychology (a.k.a., Integrative Psychology or Functional Medicine). The goal of the website is to “provide the world with helpful information related to Holistic Psychology” which will “lead to an individual's empowerment and functionality” as it relates to mental health and well-being. Dr. Moore shares more about his professional journey and provides advice to those interested in psychology, neuropsychology, and those wanting to start their own practice. He also provides information on future goals for the website including developing applications and other resources for parents who have children struggling with neurodevelopmental issues such as the sequential memory needed to learn algebra. He is also working with functional medical doctors and nutritionists to help individuals with autism. You can learn more about his future plans around 15 minutes into our conversation. Today I am speaking with Finnish publisher Outi Karemaa. I personally find the Nordic publishing market fascinating, not least because it is relatively difficult to sell into those markets. I like challenges! Outi and I speak about those challenges, the state of the Finnish publishing market, and also about the rising popularity, and therefore competition, of English-language books on the Finnish market which we're seeing in other Nordic countries and the Netherlands as well. Show Notes: Outi's book recommendations: - The Spy and the Traitor (Crown, 2019) and Agent Sonya: Moscow's Most Daring Wartime Spy (Crown, 2020) by Ben Macintyre - The Mitford Murders (series) (Minotaur Books) by Jessica Fellowes About Outi Outi Karemaa (born 1969) is an experienced Chief Executive with a long history of working in the publishing business. Caribbean languages have been historically degraded in favor of the colonial position that has long advocated for "standard" English over our own native tongues. Welcome to another episode of The Words Matter Podcast. In this episode of the CauseHealth Series, I'm speaking with Dr Roger Kerry about his Chapter 13 that he wrote for the CauseHealth book titled ‘Causal Dispositionalism and Evidence Based Healthcare' (read Roger's Chapter here).Roger is an Associate Professor in the Division of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Nottingham. He specialises on risks and adverse events of manual therapy, neck pain and headache as well as clinical reasoning (see his research here). He holds a PhD in Philosophy with the doctoral dissertation Causation and Evidence-Based Medicine (see here). On this episode we talk about: His background as a physiotherapist, educator and researcher and how causation has featured in these areas of his work. The development of CauseHealth of which he was a founding member of the network. Roger's Philosophy PhD which looked at causation in relation to EBM and how this related the CauseHealth project. The inferential gap or problem of induction The nature of clinical reasoning and clinical expertise. What is the ‘best available evidence' in relation to causal dispositionalism. Whether there is objective ‘Truth' in healthcare. What we ‘do' with RCTs, and what does dispositionalim do with/say about RCTs and how the theory may change or support our clinical and research methods. So this was an absolutely wonderful discussion with Roger, I'd been wanting to have him on the Podcast for ages- and it was well worth the wait. You'll hear him say  at the end of our chat that it was like going three rounds with Mike Tyson…but the feeling was completely mutual given the ground that we both covered in the conversation.
