The second in a four-part series, Dr. Sarah Moseley and Ginny Bootman join Dale to discuss phonological awareness and its importance in literacy development. They explore how phonological awareness, detecting and manipulating sounds in spoken language, forms a foundation for reading skills. Sarah emphasises that understanding sounds is crucial for children's literacy success, while Ginny highlights the role of rhythm and rhyme in engaging learners. They discuss how shared experiences, like singing and storytelling, can spark a love of language and improve literacy outcomes. Sarah and Ginny also talk about how teachers can make learning fun and interactive, using music, poems, and playful activities to get children curious and engaged. I love a good dad joke and enjoy it when they use a few as examples of how to make phonological awareness fun! Why does the Assess, Plan, Do, Review cycle matter? with Sara Alston

Since the 2015 SEN Code of Practice SEN support has been based on a graduate response that includes an Assess, Plan, Do, Review (APDR) cycle. Unfortunately, this cycle is becoming fragmented, with each component operating in isolation. Assessments are not being linked to children's needs or plans to support them. Plans are made but not implemented and reviews are just a recap of what a child can or cannot do. Sara Alson, SEND and Safeguarding Consultant and Trainer, joins Dale in the studio to discuss why the APDR cycle matters.  Sara stresses that it is an ongoing process that should adapt to the needs of each child, ultimately aiming to improve their educational experience. I thoroughly enjoyed this episode, especially Sara's engaging analogies, including her comparison of Monopoly rules to planned interventions! We typically discuss how to support neurodivergent children, but what about teachers? Today, Dale and Catrina Lowri, founder of Neuroteachers, discuss the need for increased support for neurodivergent teachers and support staff. Catrina shares her personal journey as a neurodivergent educator with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, dyslexia and ADHD. She sheds light on the challenges faced by neurodivergent individuals in the education system, including stigma, lack of understanding, and inadequate support. Catrina highlights the importance of recognising the strengths and needs of neurodivergent teachers, advocating for a more inclusive and understanding environment in schools. She talks about the significance of representation and the positive impact of having neurodivergent role models for students. Pointing out that “if you have neurodivergent teachers and support staff in your school, then you are representing that 20% of children who have neurodivergent needs. They gravitate towards you and they like having an adult role model who's been relatively successful but also has similar needs and strengths and as them.” Catrina shares her experiences of masking her neurodivergence in the classroom and the burnout that can result from it. In today's episode, ‘The Importance of Literacy Education for ALL Learners', Chantal Bryan and Sarah Giles from the charity Teach Us Too join Dale for an engaging discussion. The conversation centres around Chantal's son, Jonathan, who faces significant challenges due to his complex physical disabilities. I was inspired by his incredible journey towards being able to communicate with his family and his progress in learning to read and write! Chantelle shares her experience of taking Jonathan out of special school to provide him with a literacy-focused education, emphasising the importance of not making assumptions about a child's capabilities based on their labels. With the support of educators like Sarah, Jonathan has made remarkable progress, including starting university courses in creative writing. As Chantal puts it, “Literacy is the key to unlocking their voice.” This inspiring episode highlights the importance of a literacy-rich environment, the need for inclusive educational practices, and the belief that all children should have the opportunity to learn to read and write. Chantal and Sarah discuss strategies for making literacy engaging and accessible, including the use of low-tech tools like E-Tran frames, which can aid communication for non-verbal learners. Listen to hear why literacy is vital for all students and how it opens doors to communication, personal expression and transforms lives.   About Chantal Bryan OBE No-one's story should ever involve a parent needing to remove a child from school in order to teach them to read and write.  If we had to do this for all our children, there would be national uproar.   Through my experience as a mother who took her son out of special school to teach him to read and write I have seen first hand the need for a greater understanding of the potential to learn in students with complex needs.  I have also experienced the immeasurable difference that being able to read and write makes both for a child or young person who is non-speaking, and also their family and friends around them.  This has driven and motivated my determination to make a difference for those children.   About Sarah Giles I trained as a primary school teacher and later became a SENCo within a mainstream primary school.   After a few years away from the classroom while I had my own family I was introduced to Jonathan & his family who were looking for the help of a primary school teacher for his home education.  I then worked with Chantal to teach Jonathan at home for several years.  When Jonathan established Teach Us Too, he asked me to take a lead on his behalf and I have been working with the charity ever since.   Contact Chantal & Sarah https://www.facebook.com/TeachUsToo https://x.com/TeachUsToo info@teachustoo.org.uk   Useful Links Jonathan's blog Jonathan's book – ‘Eye Can Write' Jonathan's Facebook page Emma Maskell the class that roared Transformational Tales Out of my Mind   B Squared Website – www.bsquared.co.uk  Meeting with Dale to find out about B Squared - https://calendly.com/b-squared-team/overview-of-b-squared-sendcast  Email Dale – dale@bsquared.co.uk  Subscribe to the SENDcast - https://www.thesendcast.com/subscribe   The SENDcast is powered by B Squared We have been involved with Special Educational Needs for over 25 years, helping show the small steps of progress pupils with SEND make. As the number of children with SEND in mainstream schools continues to rise, coupled with limited spaces in specialist settings, the demand for effective and inclusive support is huge. More children are entering classrooms with complex needs, placing pressure on mainstream schools to meet those needs. But how can schools do this? This week, Tanya Lefort joined Dale to discuss ‘Structured Teaching, Pre-empting Barriers and Developing Curriculum Pathways'. With 18 years' experience in SEN, Tanya highlights effective strategies for educators to meet the increasing demands of inclusive education. “Children are really, really good at teaching us how to be better teachers.” Tanya Lefort Key takeaways from their conversation: The importance of focusing on what students can do, rather than what they can't. Implementing visual systems to foster independence in neurodivergent learners. The necessity of tailored approaches that adapt to each child's unique needs. Strategies to empower children and reduce "learned helplessness" in the classroom. Tanya also emphasises the need for schools to create supportive environments that allow all students to thrive, regardless of their challenges. Make sure you listen to this episode to hear practical insights to enhance your teaching practice and support your students effectively! About Tanya Lefort Tanya began her career at the age of 18, working with adults who presented challenging behaviours and had autism spectrum disorders (ASD). While funding her university studies, she secured a teaching assistant position in a special educational needs (SEN) school, where she gained valuable experience in structured teaching, positive behaviour approaches, and sensory processing. After completing her studies, Tanya transitioned into a lecturing role at a college specialising in SEN, where she served as the head of autism and behaviour. She further enhanced her expertise by training as a Maybo trainer and supporting the National Autistic Society (NAS) accreditation process. Additionally, she completed a five-day TEACCH course, deepening her understanding of autism education methodologies. In 2014, Tanya was appointed as a Key Stage 1 (KS1) Area Resource Provision (ARP) teacher in a mainstream school. She excelled in this role and eventually became the ARP leader and a Key Stage 2 (KS2) ARP teacher, focusing on effective management of challenging behaviours. Tanya completed the NASENCO award and subsequently secured a position as a Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO), later advancing to assistant head. She worked with the local authority as a lead SENCO, supporting other SENCOs in developing best practices for children with special educational needs in both mainstream and ARP settings. Currently, Tanya is part of a working group focused on developing funding descriptors for children with Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs) in mainstream and specialist provisions. She leads ARP/SRP network meetings for the local authority and facilitates the NPQ SENCO course for University College London through Teach West London, continuing her commitment to improving educational outcomes for all children with SEN. Identifying Dyslexia and Why it Matters with Dr Helen Ross

In today's podcast we delve into the profound mental health effects of dyslexia and the crucial need to address them. Dyslexia not only presents self-esteem challenges but also carries significant implications for individuals' overall well-being. However, there are numerous ways to mitigate the detrimental effects of dyslexia, especially when it is openly discussed and destigmatised. Once again, we are joined by Dr. Helen Ross, who shares her insights on 'Identifying Dyslexia and Why it Matters'. In our conversation, Helen emphasises the importance of screening to identify dyslexia, enabling individuals to better understand themselves and fostering a supportive environment where teachers can comprehend their needs. By making necessary adjustments in the classroom and adopting a holistic approach, we can empower individuals with dyslexia to thrive. “If kids don't understand why they do things in a certain way, or don't do things in a certain way, that's when that ‘I'm stupid' thought process happens with them.” Dr Helen Ross By helping children understand why they may approach certain tasks differently or struggle with specific areas, we can prevent the detrimental thought process that often leads to feelings of inadequacy and self-judgement.   About Dr Helen Ross Dr Helen Ross is a fully qualified special needs teacher and former SENCO, working as an independent educational research consultant, specialist assessor and SEND expert. Helen is a Trustee of the British Dyslexia Association, Chair of the Wiltshire Dyslexia Association and is on the board of the US, not-for profit National Coalition of Independent Scholars. She has consulted for the British Dyslexia Association, The Committee for Science and Technology (part of the UK Government), and Wiltshire Local Authority. She also works internationally with various third sector and commercial organisations with evaluation, consultancy and resource development. Helen's research explores stakeholder experiences of SEND provision within the mainstream education sector, focussing on the empowerment of those supporting young people, to help them to take ownership of their own learning. She uses her findings from research to inform her own practice and to support other practitioner in their own work, through CPD webinars and live sessions.   Contact Helen helen@helensplace.co.uk https://x.com/drhelenross helensplace.co.uk/   Useful Links British Dyslexia Association website Succeed With Dyslexia   B Squared Website – www.bsquared.co.uk  Meeting with Dale to find out about B Squared - https://calendly.com/b-squared-team/overview-of-b-squared-sendcast  Email Dale – dale@bsquared.co.uk  Subscribe to the SENDcast - https://www.thesendcast.com/subscribe   The SENDcast is powered by B Squared We have been involved with Special Educational Needs for over 25 years, helping show the small steps of progress pupils with SEND make. The SENCO role is unique and crucial, as SENCOs champion the needs of students who require additional support. However, other priorities in schools often mean that SENCOs themselves don't receive the support they need to be effective. To better champion these students, the SENCO's voice needs to be heard. But how do you, as a SENCO, ensure your voice is heard? In this week's podcast, Dale is joined by Ginny Bootman, a SENCO working across 4 schools. Ginny brings a wealth of experience and insight to discuss ‘Getting your voice heard as a SENCO'. Ginny points out that it could be as simple as getting a ‘yum yum'! Ginny explains that the key is to invest time in building relationships and having meaningful conversations. By breaking down barriers and ensuring everyone understands each other's perspectives, SENCOs can position themselves as valuable partners in supporting diverse learners. “I think when we're talking about getting our voice heard, actually it's about getting our voice heard with the most important people - the children”. Ginny Bootman By being heard and having their expertise recognised, SENCOs can drive better outcomes for students, reduce disruption, and foster stronger relationships with parents. Their vision is to open up London as a city of opportunity for our youth and help each young person we support to realise their potential regardless of their background/circumstance.Emmanuel Awoyelu's Journey as a TeacherHaving suffered negative experiences early on in his education journey, including two school exclusions, the first in year 5 and another in year 10, Emmanuel felt that teaching would be the last thing he would ever do. However, many years later an opportunity came up at a school where he used to deliver sessions as a football coach, and what started out as filling in for someone for two weeks ended up being five months and at the end of it, he realised that the education space is where he was meant to be. He initially trained as a teaching assistant and later as a SENCO and then grew into the position he is in now. Today, as a black leader in the profession, Emmanuel is acutely aware of the responsibility that comes with his role. He understands that his presence and influence could potentially have an effect on children, staff and community members who were previously excluded. It is an honour for him to be able to represent his community and to be part of such a small yet powerful group of black senior educators. People are often surprised to hear about his role, and feel  like he is a rarity or 'unicorn' - something that you wouldn't easily find anywhere else. Representation matters deeply, and he takes on the role with pride.Emmanuel's Experience with GriefAt the age of 17, Emmanuel lost three of his closest friends in a tragic accident. This would later lead him into depression, but also marked a turning point in his life as he came to the realisation that he had to live his life differently in order to build a legacy.

“Leadership is about setting an example and leading people to a goal without making excuses. As an assistant head teacher, I have to be one of the best teachers in the school and set a great example for others. But it is also about being unapologetic in following your vision, even if not everyone believes in or understands it. It's important to convince people that what you're trying to achieve is worth pursuing, and not to expect everyone to be your friend in the process. I believe leadership is so much more than just how you speak to people; it's about taking action and leading people to the greater good.”- Emmanuel AwoyeluWho is Emmanuel Awoyelu?Emmanuel is a Special Education Needs Coordinator (SENCO) and an assistant headteacher at Eastbury Community School. Sue White is a senior educational specialist at Widgit. A qualified primary teacher, Sue's passion for building children's vocabulary came after teaching a child with specific learning difficulties. Sue could see that the child's behaviour in class was borne from a frustration of not being able to fully participate in lessons. Determined to help, Sue started a long journey of learning how to help children who process learning differently. She first became a SENCo and later specialised in a range of developmental disorders where lack of vocabulary development impacted on attainment. Sue discovered that symbols – visual representations of words – can help all children comprehend spoken and written text, communicate better, as well as build confidence, independence and vocabulary. She has been with Widgit since 2018 where she has advised hundreds of schools on how to use symbols to improve learning and support delayed language development.
