On today's episode I chat with Dr. Dan Siegel, renowned author and founder of Interpersonal Neurobiology, and my friend, Joan Ryan, Enneagram expert and educator. We explore the intersection of the Enneagram, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Dan's Patterns of Developmental Pathways (PDP) model. Our conversation dives into the science behind personality, the pathways that shape our inner worlds, and the ongoing journey toward integration and wholeness. Dan explains how his PDP model offers a scientific lens to understand personality dynamics, while the Enneagram and IFS provide tools for personal exploration and healing. They discuss how personality acts as a filter. Key Takeaways: Personality is a dynamic filter shaped by temperament, experience, and protective strategies. The PDP model identifies three core motivational vectors: agency, bonding, and certainty. How do the Enneagram and IFS complement each other in helping us explore and integrate our inner worlds? Protectors and exiles align with motivational pathways, and how integration allows us to move from survival strategies to thriving. Integration invites us to shift from limiting patterns into greater freedom and possibility. Wholeness is not about escaping personality but embracing all parts of who we are. "Your home base is wholeness. But personality is kind of just a filter that keeps you at times from experiencing that wholeness." – Dr. Dan Siegel Episode sponsor: Sentur About the Guests: Dr. Dan Siegel is the Founder and Director of Education of the Mindsight Institute and founding co-director of the Mindful Awareness Research Center at UCLA, where he was also Co-Principal Investigator of the Center for Culture, Brain and Development and Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the School of Medicine. He is the executive director of the Mindsight Institute and founding co-director of the Mindful Awareness Research Center at UCLA, where he was also Co-Principal Investigator of the Center for Culture, Brain and Development and Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the School of Medicine. An award-winning educator, Dan is the author of five New York Times bestsellers and over fifteen other books, which have been translated into over forty languages. As the founding editor of the Norton Professional Series on Interpersonal Neurobiology ("IPNB"), Dan has overseen the publica4on of one hundred books in the transdisciplinary IPNB framework, which focuses on the mind and mental health. A graduate of Harvard Medical School, Dan completed his postgraduate training at UCLA, specializing in pediatrics and adult, adolescent, and child psychiatry. He was trained in attachment research and narrative analysis through a National Institute of Mental Health research training fellowship focusing on how relationships shape our autobiographical ways of making sense of our lives and influence our development across the lifespan. Learn more about Dr. Siegel at: www.drdansiegel.com | www.mindsigh4ns4tute.com Dr. Foojan and Dr. Dan Siegel discussed the upcoming release of dan's new book, "Personality and Wholeness in Therapy," and the concept of personality in academic and clinical contexts. Dr. Siegel explained that personality refers to persistent emotions, thinking, and behavior patterns that develop over time and contribute to an individual's sense of wholeness. However, he noted that these patterns can become unworkable or unhealthy, leading to personality disorders. The conversation also touched on the relationship between brain activity and mental activity, with dan emphasizing the importance of energy flow as the foundation of both. Lastly, dan shared his insights on the formation of sound as a symbolic means of communication and the differences between personality patterns and types. He discussed the concept of implicit memory and its role in forming personality, suggesting that a sense of wholeness encoded into the brain during fetal development serves as the foundation of personality. He introduced the Enneagram personality type system, discussing its potential limitations and proposing a more fluid approach, the Patterns of Developmental Pathways (PDP) model. He also explained the three primary emotions of the Enneagram system, highlighting the neuroplasticity of the brain and the role of attachment in the process. Dr. Siegel explained the different forms of attachment and their impact on personality. He emphasized that non-secure attachment can lead to emotional distance, intrusiveness, and inconsistency, resulting in ambivalence or disorganization. He discussed the concept of growth edges, emphasizing the importance of embracing uncertainty and the reality of a journey. He highlighted that individuals have an inward or outward bonding pattern and encouraged them to accept their vulnerabilities and needs. Dr. Siegel introduced a model of personality development that emphasizes growth and exploration of different patterns, explaining how individuals can identify their growth edge and benefit from tapping into the positive aspects of each of the nine patterns. The conversation also touched on the potential of meditation and psychedelics in expanding consciousness and promoting wholeness, suggesting a collective consciousness that underpins individual growth and development.

You're most likely familiar with Dr. Dan Siegel and his pioneering work to understand the mind and help us live more joyfully. You probably aren't familiar with his childhood story in which his joy and innocence set in motion the death of something he dearly loved. When Dan arrived at the Hoffman Process retreat site and stepped out of his car, he was immediately greeted by one of the rabbits who lives on the over 180 acres there. When he saw this rabbit, an array of feelings and sensations swept through his body. A few days later, as Dan's Process was well underway, a fawn and its mother would open the door wider into the deep work of Dan's Process. The Hoffman Process offers a science-based, courageous week of transformation. It's a week of experiential learning incorporating everything, including the land and everything alive. It opens the door to what Dan calls "the plane of possibility," also referred to as Love by Dan. With one foot in the practical science and the other in the world that opens us to the spiritual aspects of our nature, we step into the possibility and opportunity to heal what has often followed us nearly our entire lives. In this nearly-an-hour conversation, Dan shares his journey of studying the mind and the results and insights of his decades of research and practice with his clients. Drew, our host, and Hoffman teacher Marc Kaplan join in for this amazing conversation. Marc was Dan's teacher at the Process and together they share insights into much of what transpired for Dan. Dan's deeply delightful and joyful qualities thread their way through this conversation. What a gift. Thomas is joined by neuroscientist, education philosopher, and social entrepreneur Dr. Sará King, and clinical professor of psychiatry, co-director of the Mindful Awareness Research Center at UCLA, and Executive Director of the Mindsight Institute Dr. Dan Siegel. They discuss the concept of Intrapersonal Neurobiology - an interdisciplinary approach to understanding how our minds create our experiences, with an emphasis on the benefits of what Dr. Siegel refers to as “self-expanding emotions” - empathy, compassion, gratitude, and awe. They dive deep into the idea of the collective nervous system, how we can learn to experience it, and how that can help us shift from defining the self as a solo entity to understanding humanity as fundamentally interconnected. In doing this, Dr. King and Dr. Siegel posit that we can create a stronger sense of belonging, increase our sustainability, and assist in the evolution of the planet instead of its destruction. ✨ Thomas' Art of Attunement course is 50% off - for a limited time.
In this conversation with psychiatrist and author Dan Siegel we dive into the concept of self, exploring the lie of the solo self, other constructs of selfhood, psychological adaptations for seeking wholeness, verb versus noun-like personality and the center of belonging. “Our relationships really shape how we feel, how we think, how we remember things, how we tell the story of who we are, the sense of self, where you focus your attention, what gives you a sense of purpose.Relational integration in a family leads to the growth of neural integration inside the child's nervous system. Every time you say regulation—like regulating emotion or your mood, regulating attention, thought behavior, self-understanding, morality—it depends on integration in the brain. So the neural integration is the basis for optimal regulation, but it comes from relational integration. We all can follow Picasso's suggestion, which I think is really beautiful: The meaning of life discovering our gift. The purpose of life is giving it away.” (Dan Siegel)In developmental science, there are lots of debates between nature and nurture. And Dr. Dan Siegel's groundbreaking work in interpersonal neurobiology demonstrates that we are naturally wired for nurture—and furthermore, we cannot thrive without it.Over the past five decades, he has sought to explain through attachment theory and a study of the brain, how relationships shape our feelings, thoughts, memories, stories and personal narratives, and how all these offer an opportunity for us to integrate all of our personal subjective with the world outside us.Our relational tendencies and inner being are malleable—always growing and changing. We are under construction our entire lives, and that's good news for those of us who feel the weight of loneliness, relational struggle, or the challenges of mental illness.Dan Siegel's work helps us become deeply present to others—in friendships, romance, or parenting—by becoming deeply attuned to your inner life, including all of our emotions, plans, pain, and our ongoing and evolving stories. His research shows that caring and attuned relationships provide a safe and secure environment in which we can experience integration and gain insight into what is most meaningful to us. He calls this concept “mindsight”—how we gain an inner sense of self is intertwined with how we relate to others. And he offers how mindfulness and meditation are important to this process of becoming intraconnected. Life today is characterized by isolation and fragmentation, but Dan's wisdom and practices offer helpful guidelines on how we can grow whole—and persons in deepening, reciprocating relationships.Dr. Dan Siegel is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine and the founding co-director of the Mindful Awareness Research Center at UCLA. He has authored numerous research articles, books, and accessible materials that apply what we know about the brain to our most sacred and significant relationships. His many books include the groundbreaking introduction to interpersonal neurobiology, The Developing Mind—as well as Mindsight, Parenting from the Inside Out, The Whole Brain Child, and his most recent book, Intra-Connected.In this conversation with Dan Siegel, we discuss:The connection between the mind and the brain, and why that matters for our thrivingComing to terms with big, challenging emotions—especially fearHow psychological integration creates flow and harmony and helps us deal with chaos and rigidityThe scientific connection between focused attention, open awareness, and compassionate intentionHe walks us through a mindfulness exercise he calls “the wheel of awareness”The neurobiology of interpersonal relationshipsAnd we discuss how that impacts not just our spirituality and relationships, but society as a whole.About Dan SiegelDr. Siegel is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine and the founding co-director of the Mindful Awareness Research Center at UCLA. Dr. Siegel is also the Executive Director of the Mindsight Institute. His latest book is called IntraConnected: MWe (Me + We) as the Integration of Self, Identity, and Belonging. In this episode, I talk to Dr. Dan Siegel about expanding the notion of the self. Modern culture has taught us that the self is all about individual identity and personal experiences. But Dr. Siegel posits that who we are is not limited to the brain or body. He argues that the self is not isolated, it's composed of our relationships to other living beings and to the natural world. This expanded view of the self has important implications for the trajectory of humanity. What is the difference between the brain and the mind? When you make a big decision, do you listen to your mind, your heart, or your gut? Why do we ignore our gut instincts—our intuition and trust our mind only to find ourselves exactly where our gut told us we would end up with? Why do we do that? Well, if you want to have a better understanding of the differences between the brain, mind, consciousness, empathy, integration, and compassion, then this is the episode for you! About Dr. Daniel Siegel Dr. Siegel is a Clinical Professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine and the founding co-director of the Mindful Awareness Research Centre at UCLA. An award-winning educator, he is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and recipient of several honorary fellowships. Dr. Siegel has published extensively for both professional and lay audiences. With 5 New York Times bestsellers and now with his latest book IntraConnected: Mwe (me = We) as the Integration of Self, Identity and Belonging, exploring the nature of how our experience of what we call “self” emerges across the lifespan. Dr. Siegel's unique ability to make complicated scientific concepts exciting and accessible has led him to be invited to address diverse local, national, and international groups, including mental health professionals, neuroscientists, corporate leaders, educators, parents, public administrators, healthcare providers, policymakers, mediators, judges, and clergy. He has lectured for the King of Thailand, Pope John Paul II, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Google University, and London's Royal Society of Arts (RSA). He lives in Southern California with his family. Both a personal and general meditation on identity and belonging, Daniel J. Siegel's book combines personal reflections with scientific discussions of how the mind, brain, and our relationships shape who we are. Weaving the internal and external, the subjective and objective, IntraConnected reveals how our culture may give us a message of separation as a solo, isolated self, but a wider perspective unveils that who we are may be something more—broader than the brain, bigger even than the body—and fundamental to social systems and the natural world. Our body-based self—the origin of a Me—is not only connected to others but connected within our relational worlds themselves—a WE—forming the essence of how we belong and our identity. If the pandemic has taught us nothing else, it has taught us that we are all connected. IntraConnected discusses that bond, as well as other realities of our intraconnected lives. We will learn: How our sense of self changes throughout human development. What causes a mismatch between your inner sense of identity and your inner sense of belonging. How to use the Wheel of Awareness practice to open yourself to access the wisdom of connection and systems intelligence in your life. Ask yourself something… Who are you? As we age, we start to understand ourselves in different ways. Actually, in really different ways depending on if we're still in childhood, adolescence, or adulthood… all shaped by our connection to the world around us. And it all happens without us even perceiving much of a change. But is this natural evolution of self the best thing for us or even true? Or are we just concretizing an illusion of separateness and getting further from the oneness that was meant for us? That's what we're talking about today. Our guest is Dr. Dan Siegel. He is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine and the founding co-director of the Mindful Awareness Research Center at UCLA. He is also the Executive Director of the Mindsight Institute. And he's the author of multiple books, including personal development bestsellers like Mindsight and one of my favorite parenting books, “The Whole Brain Child,” and his newest book: “IntraConnected.” Links from the episode: Show Notes: https://mindlove.com/282 Become a Mind Love Member for high-value Masterclasses, Growth Workbooks, Monthly Meditations, and Uninterrupted Listening FREE 5-Days to Purpose Email Course Sign up for The Morning Mind Love for short daily notes from your highest self. Modern culture has influenced many of us to view the self—the seat of human experience—purely by the boundaries of the body and the mind, creating a fundamental sense of separateness from the rest of existence. On this episode of humanOS Radio, Dan speaks with Dan Siegel. Dr. Siegel is a clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine, and is the founding co-director of the Mindful Awareness Research Center at UCLA. He is a pioneer in a field known as interpersonal neurobiology (sometimes referred to as relational neuroscience). Interpersonal neurobiology characterizes human development and function as a product of interactions between the body, the mind, and relationships with one another. Dan is also the executive director of the Mindsight Institute, a unique educational organization that provides online learning and in-person lectures that examines the interface of human relationships and basic biological processes, with the goal of cultivating mindsight in individuals, families, and communities. So what exactly is mindsight? Mindsight is a theoretical construct that is related to theory of mind. However, mindsight goes beyond merely being able to conceive of one's own mind and that of others. Mindsight refers to the capacity to sense patterns of shared communication of energy and information change within relationships. It also captures the ability to look inside ourselves, recognizing our own emotions, without being consumed by them. An illustration of this concept, commonly cited by Dr. Siegel, is the subtle difference between “I am sad,” as opposed to “I feel sad.” The latter implies recognition of a feeling you are experiencing in the moment - a state that isn't permanent, and to which you can control your response. As you might imagine, mindsight and the intricacies of interpersonal neurobiology are very challenging concepts to understand and research, at least using the tools currently available to biologists and scientists, which is why Dr. Siegel's work in this area is so valuable. Daniel J. Siegel is a medical doctor, professor of clinical psychiatry at the University of California School of Medicine in Los Angeles, co-director of the UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center and executive director of the Mindsight Institute. With a positive vision, Siegel argues that adolescence is a very special time, emotions are sparked, social connections made, and searches start for what's new and creative essence: “Adolescents have passion, a feeling that everything matters. They have a deep capacity for collaboration between themselves, and the strength to try new things," he says.
If meditation didn't exist, would scientists have had to invent it? Dr. Daniel Siegel is a scientist by training and disposition who found his way, unbeknownst to himself, into creating a powerful, innovative meditation technique that is now used by many thousands of people. As he discusses with Ken in today's episode, Dan came to it as a psychiatrist with no prior experience of meditation. But his study of the brain and body and how to treat his suffering patients led him to develop a set of practices that he calls The Wheel of Awareness. After the fact he discovered that the Wheel weaves together the three pillar meditation practices that have been studied by scientific researchers into a single exercise — focused attention meditation, open awareness, and compassion training. Dr. Daniel Siegel is a clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine, a founding co-director of the UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center, and the executive director of the Mindsight Institute. He is the NY TImes bestselling author many books, including Brainstorm and Mindsight, and co-author of Parenting from the Inside Out and The Whole Brain Child. His new book, Aware: The Science and Practice of Presence, is a hands on guide for the groundbreaking meditation practice, The Wheel of Awareness, and looks in depth at the science that underscores meditation's effectiveness. In this episode, we're talking to Dan Seigel, who is so impressive. He is a psychiatrist, a speaker, the author of numerous books, the Director of the Mindful Awareness Research Center at UCLA, and Executive Director of the Mindsight Institute. He's actually with us now because we heard him speak, and said “oh my gosh, we need him on our podcast.” So we waited after his talk and ambushed him to ask. We can't wait for you to hear his description of the mind, mindfulness, and meditation as “mind training,” particularly his practice of “the wheel.” Don't worry, you'll learn what that means. But the idea that the mind is a verb, not a noun, is so astonishing, and opens up so avenues for discussion and understanding that I know you'll walk away from this episode completely blown away.
