In this episode of Crime Time, Inc., we delve into the fascinating life of Frank Abagnale, the notorious con man whose exploits inspired the film 'Catch Me If You Can.' We discuss his early life, the psychological impact of his parents' divorce, and his various cons before turning 21—impersonating a pilot, doctor, and lawyer. We explore his skill in social engineering long before the digital age, and how he eventually turned his life around to work as an FBI consultant for over 40 years. The episode also covers Abagnale's insights on modern-day security, including the risks of debit cards, the need for strong passwords, and his advocacy for better data protection laws. His journey from deception to redemption serves as a powerful lesson on the importance of vigilance and understanding in an increasingly complex world of scams.00:00 Introduction to Frank Abagnale's Story00:44 Frank's Troubled Childhood01:17 Early Cons and Social Engineering02:30 The Pilot Persona03:40 Multiple Identities and Modern Relevance04:42 From Con Artist to FBI Consultant05:55 Frank's Advocacy and Security Tips08:06 Reflections on Frank's Legacy09:58 Conclusion and Upcoming Episodes Hosted on Acast. Tom Hanks chases Leonardo DiCaprio in one of the most fun cat-and-mouse chase thrillers of all time! And it's all “inspired” by a true story! As the tagline says, it's “a true story of a real fraud.” Okay. So how true is it? Well, we looked into it and……. Guys, what we found out is depressing. Frank Abagnale didn't do any of the things he claimed he did in his book. You know, the things that are interesting, the things you're here for. He didn't pretend to be a lawyer or a doctor, he didn't forge millions of dollars of checks, he didn't travel the world as a fake pilot. Indeed, when his book was published in 1980, reporters who bothered doing even the tiniest amount of due diligence were able to debunk his claims. Skeptical reporting has followed Abagnale his entire career. It hasn't mattered. His story is more fun. Does that affect the way we view the movie? You'll have to listen to find out. Frank Abagnale is famous for being a confidence man, a thief and is convicted of bank fraud. Before being caught he allegedly passed the Georgia bar exam, served as a Doctor and most famously logged millions of miles posing as a Pan Am pilot needing a ride from town to town. Of course in each town he made and cashed fraudulent checks and committed other crimes, many of which are now in question, but the claims are monumental. His story was told in the motion picture "Catch me if you can" featuring Leonadro DiCaprio as Abagnale, Christopher Walken as his father, Charlie Sheen as his prospective father in law and little known actor Thomas Hanks as the FBI agent tracking Abagnale's cons and schemes through the 1960s.So why is this mentioned on WYE? Well, because a recent story broke about a man impersonating a Paramedic and we just LOVE drama here. And a good flick. From WOWK comes a story of mystery, intrigue, and a couple of Volunteer Fire Departments a little too quick to take someone at their word. Apparently Christopher Lee Lin (or as he apparently referred to himself to remain incognito, Christopher Beckinsale, no apparent relation to the movie star) wandered into a West Virginia Volunteer Fire Department and mentioned he was a Paramedic from elsewhere. The Chiefs gave him gear, including, a $15,000 breathing apparatus, and then found out later...well...maybe he isn't who he claims to be.This week we ponder:How does one fake being a Paramedic? How does one not ask around or perhaps ask for proof of said Paramedic certs?Exactly what does a $15,000 breathing apparatus look like?If the real Frank Abagnale made up many of his exploits, does that make him a better con man in the end?BOLOPicard Season 3 on ParamountThe Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady HendrixSupport the showJoin our Facebook Community!Buy us a beer!Email Us! Virginia Morris, a retired real estate agent from Houston, Texas, doesn't want me to use her real name. She claims Frank Abagnale scammed her out of $20,000 through a bogus investment scheme. Virginia spent years suing Abagnale, trying to recover her money. However, she was unsuccessful. Abagnale ignored the court summons and failed to appear in court. So, Virginia did what anyone who lost more than $20,000 would do. She showed up at one of Frank Abagnale's speaking events and confronted him. Learn more about your ad choices. On September 12, 2022, Frank Abagnale was honored with a Heroes in Ethics award at Xavier University. An ethics award for a conman! Unlike the general public, who were spellbound by the myth surrounding Abagnale's life, Xavier University knew precisely who they were honoring that night. They can't claim ignorance because I wrote the University and told them they had the wrong guy. Frank Abagnale doesn't deserve an ethics award. He lied about his entire life story. Was Malala busy that week? She deserves an ethics award. But despite knowing the truth, Xavier University went along with their little ethics ceremony anyway. Xavier University's mission is built on moral and ethical responsibility- that's what it says on its website. And out of all the people in the world making a difference, they chose to honor a guy who ripped off his girlfriend and is accused of feeling up college girls pretending to be a doctor-slash pilot recruiter. But, seriously, did they even read this guy's Wikipedia page? Picture a room full of business students, professors, lawyers, accountants, and even current members of the FBI eagerly awaiting Frank Abagnale's Heroes in Ethics acceptance speech. Little does Frank Abagnale know that Jim Grinstead, host of the Scams and Cons podcast, was in the audience. Jim planned to confront Frank Abagnale during the Q&A portion of the ceremony. Remember the movie "Catch Me If You Can?" It was based on the life of Frank Abagnale Jr. Abagnale is still conning us -- and making good money doing it. Like any good con artist, the trick is in misdirection. He doesn't want us to see prison files that show he was in jail during much of the time he outlined his escapades. He doesn't talk about stealing expensive camera equipment from a summer camp. He doesn't talk about pretending to be a doctor at Arizona State University performing examinations on potential stewardesses. When asked about these and other contradictions in his life, he cloaks himself in a quilt of love of country and family dedication. He says he doesn't talk about his past life (although he did to Google in 2017) and disavows writing (or reading) a book which bears his name as an author. In this episode, we'll focus on one part of Abagnale's story: the movie, "Catch Me If You Can" in which you'll hear Abagnale tell the same story many different ways. Listen in as we caught him because we could."The Greatest Hoax On Earth: Catching Truth While We Can" by Alan Logan. This is the definitive guide to Abagnale's liesPretend podcast by Javier LeivaJavier takes you on an audio journey through Abagnale's life, uncovering new information about the con artist and his family. The Carson Podcast with Mark Malkoff Mark listens as Abagnale discusses bunking with Leonardo DiCaprio and other tales.Support the show

This series is not just a story about a con man who lied about his past experiences. No, it's much bigger than that. This series is about correcting history. For decades, we've celebrated Frank Abagnale's life. He's invaded our living rooms in countless tv interviews. He's had Leonardo DiCaprio play him in a movie. John Williams even scored his superhero theme song. And his life has even been turned into a musical that one reviewer wrote: "is an amazing true story with a happy ending we all need." But it turns out that America's favorite con man is really just another petty criminal who's never really repaid all the money he stole. But if we zoom out, this is the story of the spread of misinformation. Where politicians and other grifters have taken a page out of Abagnale's book and learned that if they repeat multiple lies over and over, most people won't question it. And they can get away with it. Frank claims he evaded the FBI for five years. They couldn't catch him even if they tried. Sure, he admits he finally got arrested, but in his version of the story, he's the hero working undercover for the FBI. I may not believe his account, but I think he won in the end. The guy is in his mid-70s, lives in a multi-million-dollar island home, and makes a pre-school teacher's annual salary every time he takes the stage. He made it! And besides his alleged victims, no one seems to question his success. He fooled us all. And he would have gotten away with too, if it weren't for this meddling kid and his scrappy friend from Belfast. (The Irish guy is Alan Logan, the author of The Greatest Hoax on Earth.) We're on a mission to set the record straight. So that when you ask someone if they know who Frank Abagnale is, Instead of it being based on a true story, they'll tell you that he made it all up. Abagnale may have been on the run for the last 50 to 40 years, getting away with his biggest lie. But guess what? We caught him. I confronted Frank Abagnale in Las Vegas, NV. He claims he posed as a pilot, a lawyer, a doctor, and a professor from the age of sixteen to twenty-one years old. But how is that possible if he was sitting in prison most of that time? In Episode 11, Bolton and Grace recap the 2002 film, Catch Me If You Can, and discuss the facts of the true crime story that the movie is based on. The movie was written by Jeff Nathanson and directed by Steven Spielberg and is based on the autobiography of the same name written by Frank Abagnale Jr. with Stan Redding . The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Frank Abagnale Jr., a self-proclaimed con man who contends that he successfully performed cons worth millions of dollars by posing as a Pan American World Airways pilot, a doctor, and a prosecutor - all before his 19th birthday. Tom Hanks plays Carl Hanratty, an FBI agent who chases and eventually apprehends Frank Abagnale Jr. Christopher Walken plays Frank Abagnale Sr. and Nathalie Baye plays Frank Jr.'s mother. There are cameos from various other famous actors and actresses and viewers will enjoy seeing who pops up next. The film is fast-paced and entertaining, but after reading the book “The Greatest Hoax on Earth: Catching Truth While We Still Can” by Alan C. Logan, viewers may be disappointed to compare investigative research to Frank Abagnale Jr. 's story. This is definitely our most meta episode yet! Also, be sure to check out Watching Netflix Without You and the Vaginance podcast wherever you get your podcasts!Sources: Catch Me If You Can (2002)Abagnale, Frank Jr. with Stan Redding. For decades, Frank W. Abagnale's story has captured the imagination of audiences around the world as a modern-day folk hero—but the truth could not be more different from the fictitious autobiography he sold to Hollywood. Self-proclaimed as “the world's greatest con man,” the true dimensions of Abagnale's hoax have been revealed for the first time in a new book by my guest today, Alan Logan.
Stephen Spielberg's blockbuster film “Catch Me If You Can” brought the story of con man Frank W. Abagnale into widespread public awareness. But as award-winning author Alan C. Logan reveals, Abagnale's confessions of his own exploits are hoaxes themselves. Logan's new book, “The Greatest Hoax on Earth: Catching the Truth, While We Can,” is an exhaustively researched debunking of the myth crafted by the self-proclaimed “world's greatest con man.” Watching America host, Dr. Alan Campbell, notes that Abagnale has presented himself as a “benign cowboy of trickery.” Listen to this interview with Logan to hear about the more malignant aspects of Abagnale's frauds – and how they were kept undercover for so long.

In this episode, Brett sits down with his former podcast co-host of the Online FraudCast, Karisse Hendrick, to discuss the well-researched revelations of the new book, "The Greatest Hoax on Earth; Catching The Truth While We Can" by author Alan C. Logan. The subject of this book is the legendary Frank Abignale Jr. Most famously known for his life as a Con-Man in the late 60's and 70's, victimizing large companies such as TWA airlines in check fraud. Frank has gone on to write several books, speak for a large fee at conferences all over the world, and was the subject of the Steven Spielberg movie "Catch Me if You Can", in which Leonardo DiCaprio played a young Abagnale. In his book, Alan C. Logan fact-checks the most common threads of the stories that Abagnale has told for over 40 years, and debunks them. The truth of what Abagnale did during that time was a lot worse, yet less glamourous than the stories he's told. Because Brett Johnson is often referred to as "The Frank Abignale of Cybercrime", he is the best person fit to comment on these revelations and his reactions to them. Doug and Alek are joined by no one (a tough booking, we assure you) to discuss the findings of science journalist Alan C. Logan who recently published a book about infamous con artist Frank Abagnale, Jr. of "Catch Me If You Can" fame, claiming Abagnale, Jr. used Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio to sell us an even bigger bill of goods than previously thought. In his 1980 memoir that inspired the 2002 Steven Spielberg film Abagnale, Jr. claims to have cashed $2.5 million in bad checks over several years while impersonating a pilot for Pan American airlines, a doctor in Georgia, a lawyer for the attorney general’s office in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and a professor at Brigham Young University all while running from the FBI. Logan says Abagnale, Jr.'s tale is greatly exaggerated (surprise!) and almost completely made up. Doug and Alek also discuss other famous examples of tall tales presented as fact committed by the likes of reporter Stephen Glass, former New York Times journalist Jayson Blair, former Washington Post reporter Janet Cooke — who after winning the 1981 Pulitzer Prize for "a bogus story in The Post about an 8-year-old heroin addict named 'Jimmy'" admitted she made the entire thing up — and "A Million Little Pieces" author James Frey who "demonstrably fabricated" key parts of his bestselling, supposedly nonfiction memoir. Keep Your Voice Down’s theme is “Howling at the Moon” by D Fine Us, and this week’s outro music is "Try so Hard" by Aves.

President Trump finished up his third G-7 summit in Biarritz, France Monday, calling it "successful". Last year, the gathering of world leaders ended in disarray as President Trump abandoned a joint statement and had a public spat with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. While the president used this meeting to address the current trade war with China and showed a willingness to work with Iran, the allies rejected his demand that Russia be readmitted to the G-7. Michael O'Hanlon is a senior fellow, and director of research, in Foreign Policy at the Brookings Institution and discusses how this year's G-7 went . From robocalls to ransomware attacks, scammers are costing Americans millions of dollars a year.
