In this episode of Unspoken Security, host AJ Nash sits down with Chris Birch, an intelligence practitioner with nearly 30 years of experience, to discuss the ever-evolving landscape of social engineering. Chris's unique perspective comes from leading teams that actively engage with threat actors, turning the tables on those who typically exploit vulnerabilities.Chris details how social engineering is simply human manipulation, a skill honed from birth. He explains how attackers leverage fear and greed, the fastest and cheapest ways to manipulate individuals. He also dives into how attacks have evolved, highlighting the dangers of increasingly sophisticated tactics like deepfakes and the blurring lines between legal and illegal applications of social engineering. The conversation also explores the crucial role of organizational culture in cybersecurity. Chris emphasizes that awareness, not just education, is key to defense. He advocates for sharing threat intelligence widely within organizations and across industries, empowering everyone to become a sensor against social engineering attempts. Chris also shares a surprising personal fear, offering a lighthearted end to a serious discussion.Send us a textSupport the show

In this episode of Whinypaluza, Rebecca Greene speaks with Dr. Abbie Maroño, a psychologist, behavior analyst, and internationally recognized expert in human behavior. Dr. Abbie shares her transformative journey from struggle to success and explores how shame, often misunderstood, can be redefined as a powerful catalyst for personal growth and empowerment. Her insights are drawn from personal experiences and her groundbreaking book, Work in Progress: The Road to Empowerment, The Journey Through Shame. Listen as Dr. Abbie unpacks the science behind emotions, the path to healing, and actionable strategies for overcoming life's challenges. Key Takeaways → Shame is not the antithesis of empowerment; it can drive meaningful change. → Understanding emotions scientifically is key to addressing trauma and shame. → Facing shame requires self-compassion and a willingness to reflect deeply. → Empowerment is an ongoing process of growth, not a final destination. → Parents can help children process shame by fostering emotional education. Jeremy Hurewitz spent the first decade of his career overseas building the media association Project Syndicate while based out of Prague and Shanghai. He spearheaded a business development strategy that saw the association grow from a few dozen member newspapers in mostly Eastern Europe, to a truly global association of over 300 newspapers in over 100 countries. When returning to the US, Jeremy worked for several well-known global consulting firms in the world of corporate security. These companies are staffed by former intelligence officers and Jeremy worked closely with these former spies. In addition to former spies, his colleagues included former members of the FBI and the law enforcement community, the Secret Service, the military, the State Department, and other government agencies. Jeremy learned unique and impactful skills from all these former government employees, and he began utilizing the methods he picked up. Jeremy has synthesized these lessons from government service into the Sell Like a Spy program and works with clients to share these strategies to help them improve their ability to connect with targets, develop creative approaches to close deals, and overcome challenges. Have you ever wondered about the power of words? Not just the words we speak over ourselves and our circumstances, but about the collective power of words as a culture-shaping entity? What if words were being used all around us right now to shift ideas, to create division, to engineer a future for our nation? Join Dr. Lisa Dunne for an interview with John Brown graduate Dr. Marlene McMillan, author of Mountains of Deceit: How the Dialectic Process has Infected the Culture. When we are surrounded by mindless, dull words that sear our consciences, we lose our individuality, our capacity for personal decision making, and our liberty is at stake. "Whoever controls the language controls the outcome," Dr. Marlene says. Learn how you can apply the language of liberty instead of the language of bondage over your realm of influence.
