Recently hitting the milestone of 30 years working in game design, Spry Fox Chief Creative Officer Daniel Cook has long been a leading voice in the game industry. To celebrate his long and distinguished career-spanning games like Realm of the Mad God, Triple Town, Alphabear, and Cozy Grove. MIA host Ethan Levy returns to the mic to talk to Dan about his many lessons and accomplishments. Most importantly, Dan talks about how as a team, Spry Fox found their shared, authentic voice, and how this has led to efficiency in production and success in the marketplace as they consciously chose to specialize in cozy games. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/deconstructoroffun/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/deconstructoroffun/support
We continue the recent production talks this week as we welcome Julia Keren-Detar into the clubhouse! The discussion topic is "working on a bigger team" but we also somehow talk about rain water barrels at some point? Natalie Jaime grew up in Fayetteville, NC. She got her bachelor's degree in Communications with a focus on media production at The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and then proceeded to move to Washington DC where she worked as an Associate Producer for National Geographic. Later, Natalie and her husband lived in Westminster, Colorado for about six years. After their divorce, she decided to move into her Ford Transit van full time (with her two cats). Her boyfriend Dan and his fluffy dog Alphabear joined a year after. Fanatic rock climbers, they toured the US while she worked remotely. Today, they live on their own 5 acre piece of land right outside of Hueco Tanks, a world class climbing area close to El Paso, TX. Currently their home is a fifth wheel RV but their dream is to build a house on their land. In our conversation, we talked about all the pros and cons of living in cities, houses, vans, on the road, and today, their own piece of land. We had some great laughs about logistics such as the luxury of having a door, warm toilet seats and the need to make kaka. We reflected back on the things we miss about city life and dove into the beauty and hardship of taking care of their own piece of land in the desert while living in a RV. References from our conversation:Shout out to Sarah Clark who makes beautiful jewelry. Check out her IG account! Also, ‘I like turtles', a little insider between Natalie and I. Check out the video! In this episode of the Thousand Ant Podcast Matt Mirrorfish speaks with indie video game developer Dan Cook, developer of Cozy Grove, Triple Town and Alphabear, among many others together with David Edery and the team at Spry Fox. We talk about indie game development theory, game design and Dan's story in the game industry.Find Tom on Twitter: https://twitter.com/danctheduckRead Dan's blog at: https://lostgarden.home.blog/
David Edery is a buddy of mine who I think you guys are really going to love. Dave is one of the co-founders he's the CEO of Spry Fox, which is a unique game development studio here. They're based here in Seattle, but they have people spread out. They made Alphabear, Steambirds, Triple Town, and Realm of the Mad God. These are games that all together have 50 to a hundred million people playing them worldwide. Dave is a very successful game developer making really delightful games. They're trying to make the world a happier place. You should definitely play their games on your phone. Dave used to work at Microsoft and and he wrote a book about transforming business with what can be learned from video games. The book is called Changing the Game. I think even now a lot of those lessons can be super relevant. I think of games as like the future of almost every industry. Video games are an industry where there's a lot of competitive dynamics. Unlike almost everything else, no one's paying you to play a game. If you get bored, you'll quit. And nobody wants to read a manual to play a game or take a class to play a game. So the games have to teach you how to interact with them. And there's so many things that can be done with video games. I've seen so many other industries learn from games. We also talk about the capacity of games to be used for education and learning. I'm really interested in that topic and have thought a lot about it over the years. Dave is a guy that you would want to talk to about that. He also has a really unique culture in his company that he's tried to create. As well as a really unique view of developing culture in online communities. He has a lot of experience with this. I think anybody in the game industry knows Dave by now because he's also involved in creating a community out of game developers. There's a lot to learn here and I'm hoping that you guys really enjoy this episode. (more…)
My guest today is Daniel Cook, chief creative officer at SpryFox, creators of Triple Town, Alphabear, Road Not Taken and many more. Previous to Spryfox Daniel worked at the brand new Epic Mega Games (later simply Epic games) before spending a few years at Microsoft. He has also maintained his incredible design blog Lostgarden for over a decade. We talk about how much he loved the Amiga, Bitmap Brothers in particular, growing up in rural Maine, his work in the demo scene in the mid nineties, his deep love of deluxe paint and how he got his start in games thanks to an unsolicited portfolio sent by his friend. He also shares some incredible insight into the business of making games, how much he loved MUDs, the frustration he felt at Microsoft and why flash portals convinced him to get back into game design. "We're not going to open a newspaper one day and read about you being eaten by a bear, are we?" The episode was recorded on 07/10, or One Life Left Day as we always forget to say until the 9th, at which point the relevance of it has dissipated somewhat. Ah well. There’s always next year. It’s another Ann free week unfortunately as she was ill, but she had managed to send us the news so we were not as stuck as last week. Plus we also had a Super-Special Guest! George Perkins from Super Rare Games to talk about the Switch games that his company releases in a physical form. We asked him how far in advance he knows what games Super Rare are going to release, if he keeps track of the second hand value of Super Rare’s releases, and which developer is the most attractive. We also found out Simon’s system for remembering names, Ste told us if he was into mobile games, and we tried to work out where Alphabear 2 was on the Google Play store. If you have any leads let us know. Cheerio! It’s the end of the year, and the Mappers have arrived a little late and a little weary to talk about the year that is now past and the year that lies ahead. 2015 was a mess of a year, like years often are, and in grand tradition we echew game of the year lists to bring you some memories, some japes, and some feelings. On this episode we're joined by video game composer Braxton Burks. Braxton's first composition was reorchestrating all of Pokémon Red and Blue. He's a self-taught musician who is now attending Cornish, and composing for video games on the side. We ask him about how he got his start in music—and what is counterpoint, anyway? There's also some news to tackle. If Destiny has mysteriously appeared on your PS4, we know why, and the answer is kind of annoying. Plus, we talk about Tomb Raider, flying around in Minecraft, and the Legend of Zelda Symphony's upcoming performance on The Tonight Show.
