What were the results of 2025's DKU Double Draft!!?? Hyle, Jeff, and Mitchell reconvene to analyze their picks on episode 1308, as well as discuss the Idaho Crew's own DKU Draft, breaking down the complex fan politics of Donkey Kong Universe games and characters!
The DKU Draft is back, but doubled up with a twist! Hyle, Jeff, and Mitchell are once again drafting 15 games from across the shared universe of Donkey Kong and Rare... but all 15 games drafted last year are now off the table! Which also-rans will comprise the Second Bananas? Then, who will be picked when the three teams also draft 15 CHARACTERS from the DKU?
Hyle and Jeff "Listup" their top 10 Donkey Kong Universe games! Which elite titles from the past 30 years made their lists? Why did some controversial picks make the cut, while some widely beloved entries fail to reach the tiptop of the Tiptup? Hopefully, neither of the hosts is too Tanktup to make their case!
The results are in! DK Vine's Patrons (https://www.patreon.com/dkvine) have voted on who drafted the best library of DKU games on the DKU Draft 2024 Special. Hyle and Jeff analyze the politics of DKU fandom and what went into drafting the winning team (as well as the losing two)!
Jacob, Matt, Jarin, Visor, and Alex simulate a childhood furry awakening in this weeks episode of Star Fox Adventures. Can the boys get Crystal off their mind? Will we use a fake language too much? Have you ever wondered who Fox McCloud voted for in the 2000 US presidential election? Listen in now and learn answers to all these questions and more!Support the Show.https://linktr.ee/thefirsthourpodcast
Inspired by the NFL Draft, the Kongversation sits down Hyle, Jeff, and Mitchell to each draft five Donkey Kong Universe video games for their respective teams. With a mad scramble to recruit the favorites, it quickly becomes a mad scramble of gamesmanship and heartbreak. Which captain will score the superior DKU library?

In honor of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, the Kongversation looks at the very real impact the original trilogy had on the development of the DKU, specifically in how Rare reconceptualized the Kongs for Donkey Kong Country. Anything goes when it comes to lifting traits and set pieces from the classic films!
Wait a second, the last episode was 32...where is 33? We will get to that someday... But that's not important here, what matters is that nanner is on the show! nanner comes on to discuss NCAA Football 2014, Overwatch, and Star Fox Adventures. Of course we hit the usuals up as well. The final installment of our Star Fox Adventures retrospective sees us discuss some of the more memorable moments of the game, as well as the incredible soundtrack and memorable voice acting, before we process what it was like loving a critically divisive game that marked the end of the Rare/Nintendo partnership.
Get ready for an NXpress of galactic proportions! This week on the NXpress Nintendo Podcast, Cameron Daxon, Marc Kaliroff, and Campbell Gill review the most anticipated RPG to hit the Switch this month (well, one of them at least). Before Marc reviews Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, though, the gang responds to an urgent question from an NXpress listener: what's the best Andross fight in the Star Fox series? The hosts compare the mad scientist's appearances throughout Star Fox on the SNES, Star Fox 64, and Star Fox Adventures to assess which game has the best showdown. After that, it's on to the main event: Marc's all-encompassing review of Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, the sequel to one of 2017's most surprisingly delightful Switch exclusives. This follow-up takes Mario and the Rabbids crew to the stars with an adventure that adds new dimensions to the original's already solid strategic gameplay loop. It might be lacking in the writing and music departments, but Sparks of Hope succeeds where it matters most with creative and satisfying tactical gameplay that makes the game one of the best representatives of its genre on Switch. Tune in for Marc's all-encompassing thoughts! Don't forget: If you want to suggest a discussion topic, share your thoughts on a recent episode, or simply chat with the NXpress crew, feel free to email us at videogameseditor@goombastomp.com!
The second part of our Star Fox Adventures retrospective goes in-depth into the characters, story, and lore of this forgotten corner of the Lylat System. Who are the Krazoa? What happened with Andross on Krystal's home planet? Which Dinosaurs are the most racist? We leave no WarpStone left unturned!
We kick off our Spotlight series on Star Fox Adventures by beginning in 1997 with the launch of both Diddy Kong Racing and Star Fox 64, explaining how the follow-up projects to both would run parallel, intersect, and finally merge to become a single project under Rare... their last console game for Nintendo.
Do you remember the 24th of September? Yes, the day when our Earth was blown away by the wind into the fire of change. The day when Rare was purchased by Microsoft. On the 20th anniversary, the Kongversation reflects on the highs, lows, and ultimate acceptance of Rare leaving Nintendo... and how despite the odds, the Donkey Kong Universe has persevered.
Well, this is weird. Hyle and Josh "The Geek Critique" Wallen imagine a fantasy E3 where almost everything breaks DK Vine's way. A week full of DKU announcements and surprises across the entire spectrum of studios and franchises. Escape from the dreary world to a fantasy haunted spider hotel where your E3 wishes actually come true!
I'm the key figure in an ongoing government charade, the plot to conceal the truth about the existence of extraterrestrials in the Donkey Kong Universe. It's a global conspiracy, actually, with key players in the highest levels of power, that reaches down into the lives of every monkey, bear, and squirrel on this planet. So, of course, no one believes me. I'm an annoyance to my superiors, a joke to my peers. They call me Spooky, Spooky Hyle, who played Donkey Kong Country when he was just a kid and who now chases after little green men with a Pro Controller, shouting to the heavens or to anyone who will listen that the fix is in, that the sky is falling, and when it hits it's gonna be the shit-storm of all time.

Kole, Ben, Dennis, and David talk about Ikai, Yes, Your Grace, Into the Pit, and more. The Grind: David: Destiny 2. Kole: Ikai. Dennis: Yes, Your Grace. Into the PIt. Ben: Bit Buddy. Strange Horticulture. Multiplayer: Free Play! The End Boss: Save Room is a game made entirely of RE4 inventory puzzles. Sega is working on “super game” that is actually Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio reboots. Let Me Solo Her fever sweeps Elden Ring. Someone is adding Krystal, from Star Fox Adventures, to Half-Life 2. They've announced that they're adding the Dungeon Master to Idle Champions of the Forgotten Realms.
On today's Daily Fix, Erik Wolpaw, the co-writer of the Portal franchise really wants to make Portal 3, but there's a small indie company no one's ever heard of called Valve that kinda has the final say. But Wolpaw is down whenever Valve gives the word, he just wishes it's sooner rather than later. And speaking of Valve, a modder has, for years, been working on getting Krystal from Star Fox Adventures into Half-Life 2. Yes, you read that right. Modder Gagnetar has replaced the model-and now the voice-for Alyx in HL2 with Krystal and her original voice actor, Estelle Ellis. The full mod will be released later this year. And in Kingdom Hearts news, a Twitter user has tracked down where Sora lives in Tokyo, based on the images from the recent trailer. Sora must be loaded because according to Kingdom Hearts fan Audrey Lamsam, the luxury apartments he wakes up in is very, very expensive. Do you want Valve to make Portal 3? What other crazy Nintendo characters should modders add to Half-Life 2? Let us know in the comments!

YOU KNOW THE VIBES, you know what Bryce & Gibby came here to do on The Never Game Over Podcast & that is talk your ear off about video games & game news BUT before that Bryce does a deep dive on his retro collection that he has a love/hate relationship but still continues to collect & look for the games he wants, will he complete his Metal Gear Solid Collection, will he get that PS2 or Dreamcast that he keeps thinking about every time he goes into the retro store & will he find Star Fox Adventures finally!? Bryce brings up a new a segment for the pod aka Circle Back as they correct themself about Halo Infinite as they were both unsure if this was a reboot or not on the last episode, Gibby hasn't been playing that much but still is able to put in a few hours into Breathe of the Wild & still more of Halo: The Master Chief Collection. Bryce comes in with the games he has been playing, starts of with Manhunt does a little break down on the game & talks about how graphic, brutal & weird that game is & yet it was still fun to play as weird as that sound then he jumps into Pokémon Unite he is amazed on how broken the game is compared to Dota 2, League of Legends & Heroes of the Storm BUT it is still a really fun game to play ven though it's still a MOBA it's doing something slightly different in it's own way, the final game is Lethal League Blaze but before that Bryce & Gibby have a minor discussion if Lethal League is a fighting game or not then they talk about Lethal League Blaze for reals. Bryce & Gibby put in there feedback on the Dead Space Remake announcement even though it was a very small snippet of the trailer but both are optimistic about what is going to come from this remake & what else would they want in the game & how could they improve on it, they are also excited about the Battlefield 2042 Portal mode, followed up with sad news of the PS Vita finally closing submission for any new games to come to that handheld console & finally Death Stranding sold 5 Million copies & people are saying it is a failure so Bryce does a deep on video game sales numbers & a little about video game inflation. You and Diddy better jump inside that explosive barrel and get tossed into this minecart because we are going on a trip! This week we're playing co-op with TWO guests at the same time. We meant to have artist Kev Bayliss and composer (not music engineer) David Wise join us to reminisce about Dinosaur Planet, as Kev did in his editorial “I was a lead on Dinosaur Planet and this week's leak brought back great memories.” However, things went truly off the rails and we ended up looking back at their time working on not only Dinosaur Planet, later Star Fox Adventures, but also Donkey Kong Country, Diddy Kong Racing, Battletoads, Wheel of Fortune, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Killer Instinct and we're just not sorry at all. Lucky episode number 13 brings you three games all released in the back half of 2002 and all games that were originally intended for the N64! Friend of the show Jed Winters joins us to remind Neil that Rare's final game for Nintendo, Star Fox Adventures, isn't a bad GameCube game per se, it's just not the Star Fox we wanted. We learn about how these games all had shaky launches but ended up being cult classics. Eternal Darkness and its sanity meter bring a new spin to the psychological horror genre that we'd love to see come to Netflix someday, while Cubivore lives up to its reputation as the weirdest, most neglected, and by far most expensive Nintendo IP ever. Stick around until 40:04 to hear Neil attempt to read the back of Star Fox Adventures.

Diddy Kong Racing is forgotten. Well, not by those of us who were there in 1997, or those who had N64s after their heyday, or those who are students of history. But to the general gaming populace and younger Nintendo fans? It's barely a footnote. And, as a result, the actual history of the Donkey Kong Universe is blurred. Hyle and Jeff discuss how we got here, the complicated legal rights of Diddy Kong Racing, and what steps could be taken by both Nintendo and Microsoft to bring it back!
My guest today is Daniel Cook, chief creative officer at SpryFox, creators of Triple Town, Alphabear, Road Not Taken and many more. Previous to Spryfox Daniel worked at the brand new Epic Mega Games (later simply Epic games) before spending a few years at Microsoft. He has also maintained his incredible design blog Lostgarden for over a decade. We talk about how much he loved the Amiga, Bitmap Brothers in particular, growing up in rural Maine, his work in the demo scene in the mid nineties, his deep love of deluxe paint and how he got his start in games thanks to an unsolicited portfolio sent by his friend. He also shares some incredible insight into the business of making games, how much he loved MUDs, the frustration he felt at Microsoft and why flash portals convinced him to get back into game design. "We're not going to open a newspaper one day and read about you being eaten by a bear, are we?" PATREON - patreon.com/checkpoints iTunes HERE - SUBSCRIBE / RATE / REVIEW Games discussed: Triple Town, Steambirds, Zaxxon, Donkey Kong, Faerie Tale Adventure, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, StarGlider 2, Tyrion, Quake, Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Tetris, Counter Strike, Star Fox Adventures, Thimbleweed Park, Peggle, 1 vs 100, Realm of the Mad God, Hidden Kingdom, Journey
When the culture around a series changes, either through a new creative direction or evolving popular tastes, an older generation of fans is usually left feeling cold. It eventually happens to every fandom, and Donkey Kong is no exception. Neither is Sonic the Hedgehog, and that's why Hyle is joined by Josh "The Geek Critique" Wallen to discuss the war between generations (and why it's inevitably silly).
Happy thoughts! To keep our minds off of distressing times, Hyle and Jeff count down the top 10 happiest moments in Donkey Kong Universe fandom. Game reveals, surprising moments, and E3s and Nintendo Directs that put us on the moon. So that we may better punch it, naturally!
This week Nintendo Nostalgia goes to the prehistoric planet Sauria with guest Sean Mason. We battle the SharpClaw tribe, visit the Cloudrunner tribe, and ally with the EarthWalker tribe’s Prince Tricky in the epic Game Cube title: Star Fox Adventures.
A new season of the Kongversation kicks off with a recounting of our experiences hosting DK Vine's first-ever convention panel at MAGFest in January! What was it like unleashing the Donkey Kong Universe on unsuspecting attendees?
Join Ryan and Dylan as they take an extended look at Star Fox Adventures, the last game Rare made for Nintendo before becoming a part of Microsoft.

Spill vi snakker om i episode 10: Steins;Gate, Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow, Octopath Traveler, Mega Man Legacy Collection, Mega Man X Legacy Collection, Celeste, The Witcher III: Wild Hunt, Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age II, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy IX, Grandia 2, Wild Arms 3, Chrono Trigger, Phantasy Star Online 1 & 2, Final Fantasy XII, Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles, Tales of Symphonia, Star Ocean: Till the End of Time, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, Destiny 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King, Persona 4, Persona 5, Warframe, Fortnite, Uncharted 1-3, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Red Dead Redemption II, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, Assassin's Creed Origin, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Star Wars: Battlefront II, No More Heroes, Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes, Star Fox Adventures, Too Human, Lego Hobbit, Lego Lord of the Rings, Super Smash Bros. Did you know that Retro Studios is working on a spiritual Diddy Kong Racing successor starring Star Fox characters and featuring one or more cameos from the Kongs? You did? Of course, because it's CRAZY E3 RUMOR SEASON. Even in the face of potential malarkey, we do have some real news to report: Playtonic preparing to unload some new Yooka-Laylee content, Rare doing the same with Sea of Thieves, the sad end of Nosy Crow's app division, Diddy potentially sneaking in Mario Tennis Aces after all, and a non-story about Nintendo getting a new president or something.
Before the Kongversation embarks on several Sea of Thieves-related episodes, we take care of the dirty business of Smash Bros. discussion. Now that the fifth (or sixth?) iteration of the series has been announced for the Nintendo Switch, Hyle invites Mitchell Wolfe back to the show to help him deal with the recently scabbed wound being ripped open all over again. WHY WON'T YOU LOVE K. ROOL, SAKURAI?
The Kongversation gets topical. More than a dozen topics, actually. After discussing some of the recent Donkey Kong news, we open up the show to what our listeners brave enough to phone in want to talk about. Shockingly, it's not just about wanting K. Rool in Smash Bros. It's, uh, a little of that though.
Recorded on Valentine's Day, Hyle and Nick look at the lovelorn, lusty almost hook-ups across the Donkey Kong Universe. It's a raunch-filled evening with more sex than you can shake a stick at. Although if you really want to be successful in the ways of romance, please refrain from shaking your stick at podcast hosts.
The crowds of E3 have dispersed, but the Kongversation's Call Sack is bulging! Let's answer all of the previously unheard listener messages on the DK Vine Hotline from March to the present. Have something you'd like to say? 1-202-630-VINE (8463)!
You heard beloved Donkey Kong Universe character Richard Nixon (from off of #IDARB)! It's time for another Call Sack episode, where the Kongversation takes any and all phone messages from the DK Vine Hotline. Dial 1-281-410-KONG to be on the next one! On this edition, we discuss the finer points of adult bookstore etiquette and get into the history of clowns. This all somehow relates back to Donkey Kong or Rare.
In October 2016, NWR put on the 7th Annual Podcast Telethon for Charity, an event which featured a live edition of our monthly Gamecube Fightcast, Cube Fight. In this episode, we pit Star Fox Adventures vs. Animal Crossing as we begin to wind down our first party games from 2002. Send any feedback you have to cubefight@nintendoworldreport.com!
It's been over a year since the last Kevin Callahan sighting, but if we look even further backwards in time we'll learn about a different Diddy Kong Racing sequel. On this episode we discuss the studio Climax's bizarre pitch to Nintendo for Diddy Kong Racing Adventure, a GameCube fever dream featuring Diddy Kong, Banjo, Conker, Mumbo Jumbo, and Cranky Kong soaking in mud.
The realization that most DK Vine staff members and their associates have birthdays from the last week of October through November made us think of birthdays in the Donkey Kong Universe. How do ageless cartoon characters handle birthdays? Or... ARE they ageless? How DOES getting old work in the shared universe of Donkey Kong, Banjo, and Conker? Everything from Donkey Kong's canonical birthday month to Tiny Kong's puberty is discussed in this cake-laden episode!
After fighting a recent illness that's kept him off his feet, Hyle stumbles out of bed with a delayed Kongversation recorded just before the unveiling of the Nintendo NX. Joined by Star Fox enthusiast Cameron Reigle, they ask what could possibly save the Star Fox franchise after the colossal failure of Star Fox Zero. Believe it or not, their answer isn't a Tricky solo game. I mean, sure, they'd support that one hundred percent, but...

It's been an interesting week for fans of Nintendo. From Star Fox Zero's release (that's been contentious in the DK Vine community) to renewed rumors of a Monster Games-developed Diddy Kong Racing, it would have been enough to base an entire episode around. But then Nintendo seemed to set their entire company on fire by announcing that the NX, and Zelda, are delayed until March of next year... and the Wii U version of Zelda is the only game they're showing at E3. HUH? Note that Hyle originally wanted the episode title "NintenD'OH!", thinking it would please classic Simpsons fan Chad. Chad argued that they should double down and go with the more obscure Simpsons reference "Ninten(annoyed grunt)". Chad won.
Strap in those rumble packs and take a trip back in time with Trey and Jereme as they hit light speed and travel back to 1997 where having talking anthropomorphic animals in a game was a big deal! Music for this Episode provided by: Star Fox 2: Title Star Fox 64: Corneria Star Fox Command: Goodbye, Star Fox Slippy, Peppy, Andross, B52, Pepper, Krystal, Oikonny, Falco, Leon, Wolf, 64, Command, Assault, Adventures, Prince Tricky, Crimson Peak, Anglar, Rumble Pack
This week, Chad is suffering from low energy and is disinterested in everything (save for Minecraft)! Hyle is battling anxiety and succumbing to crippling panic attacks (so many Skylanders figures to buy)! Naturally, their thoughts are on only one thing: The sweet release of death. But what happens when you die? Let's took towards the Donkey Kong Universe to find out!
It's another episode where we clear out the Call Sack and answer your questions on a wide range of topics from across the Donkey Kong Universe! What's the old wacky gang of Kongversation listeners up to this week? If you'd like to get on the show, remember to leave a message at 1-281-410-KONG!
Professor X, Wolverine and Deadpool. Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. Balki, Urkel and Joey Gladstone. Shared universes are all the rage these days, but what makes one truly successful? Hyle forces Chad to consider his extremely nerdy passions as he compares and contrasts some of the most popular shared realities with the Donkey Kong Universe!
We've let our audio mailbag fill up to critical levels over the past couple of months! In this episode, we answer YOUR calls concerning topics from across the Donkey Kong Universe. Donkey Kong Country, Smash Bros., the Nintendo NX and more are all discussed! Call the DK Vine Hotline at 1-281-410-KONG!
So it's come to this... Patreon. DK Vine is evolving, and with this episode we're proud to usher in the new era of the site. Discover what you get by becoming a Patron and what DK Vine can become if we convince enough of you to do so. Then, in the second hour, we take listener calls and discuss some of the Donkey Kong Universe news of the day. Learn more about DK Vine on Patreon at https://dkvine.com/patreon!

A decade-and-a-half. That's officially how long DK Vine has been around. As we celebrate our 15th anniversary, Chad and Hyle take an episode to pay tribute to everyone who has made DK Vine what it is today.
The cast of Nintendo Voice Chat shoots for the stars this week! Listen to host Jose Otero, Peer Schneider, and Brian Altano discuss the Star Fox series. We begin with what made the original Super Nintendo game such a special piece of Nintendo history. But the journey doesn't end there. We also discuss why Star Fox 64 was the pinnacle of the series, the disappointment of Star Fox Adventures, and more. So strap in, do a barrel roll, and get ready for a very special episode.
After taking two calls (1-281-410-KONG!), the latter prompts a wild discussion about the Apocalypse and end-of-civilization scenarios in the Donkey Kong Universe. When have our heroes faced the end of all they knew and held dear, and, most importantly, how did they deal with it? This episode is the survival guide that anyone should have synced with their iPod in their doomsday bunker. Your family's life depends on it.
On the first installment of The Abortion Clinic, Chad mistakes the premise and talks into a vacuum cleaner. Audio fidelity aside, the boys discuss Dinosaur Planet, the evolution of a sequel to Diddy Kong Racing that eventually became a sequel to Star Fox 64 while still serving as a partial prequel to Diddy Kong Racing.

There's something to be said for a game missing its release to make it more awesome, but after a while there's the law of diminishing returns. Then there's also the trap of trying to make everything SO MUCH MORE awesome than anything else out there, you keep changing things -- even things that have or should be long since settled -- that you enter the inferno known as "development hell" where ideas both good and bad go to eternally torment fans and developers alike. Sean and Vinnk discuss Duke Nukem, the fate of Silicon Knights and their dedication to Too Human that took them under, and how Rare going to Microsoft Studios changed the company forever.
