The boardroom is back from Nintendo Live, and we've got a ton to talk about! Logan and Justin played Super Mario Bros. Wonder! Logan played Detective Pikachu Returns and talked to Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser! Justin cried at the Zelda Symphony! We've got so much to dig into on this packed edition of Toadstool Boardroom.
From 2018 we present the second of our three-part series Ode to Joysticks. Sit back as we move from 8-bit to 64-bit and find ourselves in worlds old and new, searching for mystical treasure, solving puzzles, joining ancient societies, driving fast cars or at the most fundamental level just trying to survive that new very scary looking new monster coming toward us. We learn how some of the top games composers, conductor and orchestral arrangers challenge themselves with each project to create something new: imagination and determination are needed in equal measure, and within the region of 100 years of experience between them there is plenty to talk about. We speak to composer Winifred Philips who alongside scoring some incredible games has encouraged others into her world with her book A Composer's Guide to Game Music. Composer Nitin Sawhney, who was awarded the Ivor Novello Lifetime Achievement award, but for him it was an invitation from actor and director Andy Serkis that began for a five year adventure scoring two stunningly successful games - soundtracking gamers' moments of frustrating and exhilaration. Composer Austin Wintory who was nominated for a Grammy for his score to Journey, has built a career through a sense of exploration and curiosity. Irish composer and conductor EĆmear Noone, the world's current premier conductor of video game scores. As a composer, Eimear is part of the team writing the music for World of Warcraft: Warlords of Dreanor, and conducted of The Zelda Symphony, a full four-movement symphony created from the themes from the iconic video game. Film composer Inon Zur who started off writing music as in-house composer on the Power Rangers TV series, but ended up writing video games scores to be played by the London Symphony Orchestra.Danish composer Jesper Kyd, a self-taught musician who used the Commodore 64 and Amiga as his initial tool for composing - as the computer systems grew and expanded so did his ambition. And Bulgarian composer Penka Kouneva who has worked with the likes of Steve Jablonsky on orchestration the games score for some big franchise game such as Transformers and Gear of War. Finally we speak to professor of psychology Lauren Stewart from Goldsmiths University about how the beep beep 8-bit phenomenon of the earworm has become a common malady for the serious or even casual gamer. Stephen went to PAX East and he talks about the coolest games he saw at the show. Mass Effect Andromeda doesn't come out until March 21, but if you have EA Access you can play it right now. And speaking of Mass Effect some cool Mass Effect gear is coming to Rock Band 4. The Legend of Zelda Symphony has announced dates and locations. Drawn to Death, the brand new game created by David Jaffe will be free to PlayStation Plus members right out of the gate. A bunch of old Disney games are being ported to Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Lots of Zelda fans have thrown a fit over one review by a games journalist. We talk about why that is pretty stupid. Then Stephen goes on about how good Zelda is and Nicole goes on about how good Horizon Zero Dawn is.

This week on the show, Nbz and Bally are reeling from an incredible performance at the Legend of Zelda Symphony, but more of that later! First up we talk about the games we've been playing, kicking it off with an e-shop gem, Box Boy! You mean to tell me that HAL makes games which don't feature Kirby? Yep that's right, and this awesome little puzzle platformer that both Nbz and Bally have been playing makes a case for them straying from the pink blob far more often. Bally also checks in with some progress on Xenoblade Chronicles 3D which he is making good headway in. Nbz then talks a little about playing with Mewtwo in Smash Bros, before moving on to the classic JRPG, Chrono Trigger, which he feels holds up remarkably well. Finally Nbz closes out what we've been playing with Monument Valley, a short but amazing iOS game! Yes I know, Nbz does play games on phones sometimes! After the break we bring you our live recording from the Zelda symphony, where we give all of our impressions about the event. We then close out the show with some listener mail, including a question asking about what games we would take back in time and show to people of the NES era!Ā Remember to send all your correspondence to ourĀ E-mail Address: ThisNintendoLife@gmail.com
Double the Editors Means Double the Power We're very unlucky to have four+ hour recordings, but thatās nothing 50 hours Ā in the editing room canāt fix (the resulting mental breakdowns are a different story)! Ā Stephen had a light New Business due to illness, but he and Donald team up to get wiped out by the Brock Lesnar of Japanese monsters Gore Magala in the demo for Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. Donald makes up for the game content by needing a revocation of his Citizens of Earth experience until a patch, so he called up a lawyer for Phoenix Wright Trilogy on 3DS. After that, the grand New Year's resolution begins with very early impressions of Tales of Symphonia HD. Austen has a double remake of his own with Resident Evil HD (PS4 which evolved from some system we don't talk about which evolved from PS1) before finally getting Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII out of his system. It's a complicated game, so it gets a good while. Following that is the strangest Now Posted ever, and that's saying something. Listener discretion is advised. In Whatcha Watchin', Stephen was able to recover from a nasty flu to attend the Nashville The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddess concert and have a disturbing meeting with one of NWR's finest, before plowing through a lot of Fairy Tail, Parks & Recreation and the latest example of comic oversaturation, Marvelās Agent Carter. Austen got a little TNT on with The Librarians and also tackled Log Horizon, which is basically Sword Art Online without the squick. In the interest of time, Donald had to keep it quick, but he did finish Cowboy Bebop and thanks to a Netflix miracle, saw the movie that nearly spawned M*A*S*H II, The Interview. It's a very rare triple Feature, as discussion of the January 14 Nintendo Direct began a week of Nintendo trolling that also included the mercy killing of Club Nintendo, before a countdown of the group's Top 5 Games of 2015 that could have easily gone to 10 or even 20. The Mushrooms star the flu and international finance, but Austen can't hear the complaints over the dulcet tones of Liberi Fatali playing in his head. We'd love to get some listener questions for the next show, so drop them below or send an email to nintendofreeradio@gmail.com or tweet them @NFRPodcast. It shouldn't be very difficult to guess the main subject of today's PB & Jason. I'll give you three hints: There was cosplay, I said the name of this topic in the title of Issue 93, and the beginnings of this event were announced during Nintendo's E3 2011 press conference. Give up? Ok, ok. This issue of PB & Jason is based mostly on the Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses concert! Spoiler alert: It's good. Of course, there's a little bit of other information about things like the sales numbers of the PlayStation Vita in Japan, but you'll have to give this issue of PB & Jason a listen to hear all of themĀ by clicking through to the embedded player and download links. PB & Jason is recorded in front of a live studio audience (almost) every Wednesday. For dates and ticket information, please email jason@pixlbit.com.

This week's PB & Jason has a focus on fireworks! Well, maybe not fireworks exactly, but rather the Fourth of July, the USA's Independence Day. Expect to hear of a handful of video games that really get in the July 4th spirit with fireworks and, in the case of Metal Gear Solid 2, convoluted plots! For those of you looking for a little more than holidays, don't worry! I've packed PB & Jason 91 with a lot more, mostly centered around what video games I'd like to see in the future! Spoiler Alert: I mention the Ice Climbers. A lot. There's also some hype for the Zelda: Symphony of the Goddess concert I'll be attending in less than two weeks, as well as a little bit of discussion about a not-so-retro game I'm replaying: Dragon Quest IX.Ā Click through to find listening and download links! That's right, this week's PB & Jason talks about E3. The big event is coming up next week. How will you prepare for all the press conferences, demos, pictures, videos, and interviews? By listening to PB & Jason, of course! Long lines are covered, tiny bit of swag, a question of parties, too. The 90's shows are discussed, as are the later shows and micro-E3s of years gone. Hear the technicalities behind receiving a media badge and attending the show in this very exciting PB & Jason! Oh, right. There's a little bit of talk about the Zelda Symphony tour (Guess who's attending?), Mario Tennis Open, and Diablo III, too, so stay tuned for that near the end! PB & Jason is filmed in front of a live studio audience. For ticket information, please email jason@pixlbit.com.

PRAISE THE SUN! Dark Souls has been consuming most of our lives, but we do manage to eventually break away from talking about it to discuss other recent happenings, including Square Enix's surprise retooling of Final Fantasy XIV, Sega's XBLA remake of Guardian Heroes, and Capcom's limited edition Monster Hunter 3DS. Plus: hands-on impressions of Robot Invader's Wind-Up Knight, ears-on impressions of the 25th anniversary Zelda Symphony orchestra concert, listener feedback, and more!
