Ben Davison is back with the Weekend Wrap looking at how Morrison's Nuclear sub deal is blowing up Australian jobs, threatening trade relations with China and the EU and resulting in the only European power that cares about the Indo-pacific region withdraw their ambassador from Australia and the United States (their oldest ally). But we will now get eight instead of 12 subs. In 2040. And "that fella", as Biden calls Morrison, has only had to part with $90 billion of our taxpayer funds to make it happen. Morrison's more immediate problem is Christian Porter. The embattled cabinet minister is facing daily calls to resign over the revelation that he received an anonymous million dollar donation. Morrison's Finance Minister, Simon Birmingham, took a grilling over it on the ABC show Insiders today and refused to either support or condemn his cabinet colleague in a masterful display of how to avoid demonstrating any values while looking than his own government's climate action policies. Pro-Covid fascist recruitment rallies were held again this weekend with over 200 arrested and 10 police officers injured. Australia's COVID vaccination rate has hit 37% but the impacts are not just case numbers as 13 people died in NSW. 10 of which have died before hitting average life expectancy. 84% of Victoria's cases today were under 50. Worker have had wins to round out the week with 360 AMWU members at Cadbury taking action to see those who have been "casual" for 10 years offered ongoing work, UWU member's at Dulux voted unanimously to reject a sub-standard deal and AWU members at Bluescope Steel have won $5,000,000 in back pay that will see some workers take home $45,000! It pays to be union.

Doug Cameron is a former AMWU trade unionist who served as a Labor senator from 2008 to 2019. He's now retired to Hobart, but still regularly tweets out exactly what he thinks about Australian politics and the state of the ALP. After a week of leadership speculation, a shadow cabinet reshuffle and a lot of chatter about how progressive people should just shut up and vote Labor no matter what, I found it refreshing to talk to an old-school class warrior like Doug who articulates bold, socialist politics. We talked about his experience as a socialist working in the trade union movement and the ALP, why the party should grow a spine, the Corbyn moment and why he thinks joining the Greens is the "easy way out". Today I wanted to give you a taste with a powerful speech from Tony McAvoy and an update from Thalia Anthony on the outcome of the investigation into the horrors at Donvale Youth Detention Centre in the Norhtern Territory reminincent of Arbu GrabiWe follow up with a word from a Melbourne man of Sudanese descent that shows that racism is a scourge in the Australian which needs to be put to bed.Kevin will give a view on the week and we then go to regular Dan Sutherland, Don is a campaigner and formerly the Chief Industrial Officer at the AMWU. I have been following the several plans coming from a variety of areas of the political landscape about the future of works after covid and the possible role of manufacturing despite the ongoing snouts in trough mantra of free trade economics that the Federal Government and the broader business community are love childs of. I really wanted to know how the interests of working Australian's could actually have a place at the table. And the consoment campaginer Don Sutherland actually had something to think about to raise hope. But that's for the last half hour. First an important message from the station.

18th November 2019Produced by Andy Britt. Interviews by Vivien Langford Collie at the Crossroads is about a town 200 Kms from Perth where coal is on the way out. What will give new life and new jobs to this town whose identity is based on coal.Beyond Zero Emissions has researched a plan for the future beyond coal. James Kahn – A Noongar elder tells us about Collie in its heyday and his vision for Collie’s future. Jaime Yallop Farrant - Climate Justice Union. She has worked with the Collie locals to see what community led projects would fly. Retrofitting homes for energy efficiency is one. Implementing projects an.d building trust would be another. She tells us about English coal towns where the last coal was mined decades ago but the town retains its identity and the miners are honoured. If government genuinely listens to what the community is offering, BZE has many options that fit their skills. Lachlan Rule - who was the lead author on the report gives us his policy recommendations for the WA goivernment. One of these is legislate 100% Renewable energy Target for WA by 2030 and maximise local industry participation. He sees potential in the mountains of fly ash at Collie and the red mud that can be used in low carbon concrete. He sees a growing ship BREAKING industry on the coast recycling the steel at Collie.Government contracts for recycled steel would help. The report will be launched in Collie and available at - BZE.org.au Steven Mc Cartny - State Secretary of the AMWU talks about recyled steel, recycled lithium batteries and solar panels. These are all manufacturing opportunities for Collie. It could also be a hub for sustainble building materials like engineered timber. He is keen on training and laying the groundwork for Governments to take action based on a skilled workforce and a keen community. Collie needs a skills audit to start with. Greg Busson – Secretary of the WA division of CFMEU. How would a national Just Transition Authority help Collie’s 1200 coal industry workers? Who can do the mine rehabilitation as ground water is contaminated by WA’s 1137 “shut” mines? What part will this union play in negotiating workers to decent secure jobs in the decarbonised future? Greg Busson is positive about the future but wants to see legislation like Victoria' s to guide the transition. It must not be a chance to drive down wages and conditions.
The issue of jobs and climate change is the topic of a new report released jointly by the AMWU the ETU the Gippsland Trades and Labour Council, the MUA and the Victorian Trades Hall Council. The report is called Putting the ‘Justice’ in ‘Just Transition’. We were there.

This year thousands of construction, maritime and manufacturing workers in Sydney are walking off the job on International Workers Day – Mayday - to join a massive demonstration of working class power and politics. This is the first time in decades since unions have broken-free of concerns about ‘illegal industrial action’ and are literally downing tools, shutting down factories and closing the ports at a time and place of our choosing – International Workers Day. Joining us to discuss a major development in union militancy and politics in NSW is the MUAs very own branch Secretary Paul McAleer, our close friend and comrade Steve Murphy, the NSW State Secretary of the mighty AMWU and last but certainly not least, NSW Assistant Secretary of the NSW construction union Rob Kera. But as we know, the economy ain't’ what it once was. Work ain't’ what it once was. The vast majority of us aren’t in unions. The service industry has exploded in size and significance, casual work is the ever-rising tide. And what about care-labour? Isn’t that work too? Thousands of workers who aren’t even in unions (as we know them) are expected to mobilise for this year's massive demo. What does International Workers Day even mean to this huge, growing section of working class people in Australia? Buckle in for this one, and make sure you and your mates are ready for May 1.”

And we look at the role the union movement will play in keeping both sides of politics into account in the lead up to next year's election.

The ban on uranium mining will be reinstated by the Palaszczuk government in QLD. Under the LNP government the state was opened up for exploration and mining despite a decades-long ban. The re-instatement of the ban follows pressure from unions, especially the ETU and AMWU, and community campaigns against the re-opening of mines in Northern and Northwestern QLD. We speak with AMWU national president Andrew Dettmer, David Sewell from the Citizens Against Mining Ben Lomond and Wendy Tubman from the North Queensland Conservation Council.
Steve Murphy, AMWU, reports on the 8 week lockout of workers at Ausreo in Sydney. Then Amalinda Savirani analyses the results of Indonesia's latest presidential election.
We discuss Toyota's decision to close its Victorian assembly plant in 2017 – marking the end of car assembly in Australia. Interviews about job losses, government subsidies, allegations of Toyota's international union-busting and more, with Nixon Apple (former AMWU economist), Andrew Beer (Adelaide University), Jiselle Hanna (Australia Asia Worker Links) and Anita Chan (University of Technology Sydney).
