Send us a textBridget stops by the podcast to discuss music, metaphysics, and much more. ****Bridget Barkan is a chameleon artist who shape-shifts through genre and style with a thread of raw truth and soul, woven into every melody and lyric. A native New Yorker, she has toured the world with pop/glam band Scissor Sisters and has performed with Bright Light Bright Light and Slow Knights. Starring in LGBTQ romantic classic “Walk with Me,” as a singer/songwriter, featured on the original album as well. As a singer, she has also opened for Lady Gaga, and has shared the stage with Drag legends Joey Arias, Murray Hill, and more. She worked closely with Baz Luhrmann as the voice of Misty Holloway on the Netflix show “The Get Down.” Bridget has released singles with the House DJ/producer legend Todd Terry as well as numerous of her own singles. As a child actress, she has appeared in countless commercials and Sesame Street. She has starred in HBO's Everyday People, Sherrybaby, Redacted, God's Pocket, Steven Soderbergh's The Knick and had a recurring role as a one-legged “hooker” on Law & Order: SVU. On stage, Barkan has appeared in numerous productions including Dog Sees God and alongside Lea Michelle in a workshop of Spring Awakening.  "Heartbroken Ones” was a practice in healing, purging, and processing what Barkan was going through. “It helped me get through one of the worst moments of my life. It was the acceptance I was singing to myself,” Barkan explains. “All that mattered was releasing the pain that this indiscretion had caused.” Working with producer Austin Bello (Nikki Pope, FNKHOUSER, Goldvein) again  who worked on her previous single “Good Things” and singer songwriter Poet Hawkins, she crafted the song in “a more old soul approach at first. But then I kept listening to my friend Natti Vogel's song ‘FAB (Free Ass Bitch),' which also was a healing song, which had a more pop and synth based energy, so we went in that direction, instead. We took parts of a voice memo and created a soundscape which really captured the inner world I was in.” A regular in the NYC artsy pop underground that includes Bright Light Bright Light, Xavier Smith, and John Cameron Mitchell among many others, Bridget is a “Jill of All Trades” on a one woman journey through life, love and loss. She also formerly toured the world with Scissor Sisters and can be seen in their earth-shattering “Let's Have A Kiki” video as one of Ana Matronic's crew. Having inherited her father's knack for songwriting, Bridget's intrinsic artistry and talent is a legacy she proudly carries. *****If you would like to contact the show about being a guest please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comFollow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomAudio production by Rich Zei of Third Ear AudioIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast Suzi©2025 Better To...Podcast with D. We are heartbroken.San Francisco legend Heklina was found dead in her hotel room on Monday morning in London by her longtime friend, collaborator and co-star Peaches Christ. Over the years we taped so many good shows with Heklina that it's hard to pick one, so this week we're reposting our favorites to celebrate the amazing life and legacy of this amazing comedian and drag queen. Along with her gal pal Peaches Christ, Heklina shaped and created the modern drag scene in San Francisco with their wildly popular and irreverent Trannyshack shows and nights at STUD. After the name change of the shows to Mother, Heklina and Peaches moved their events to Oasis, a bar she co-founded with her longtime friend D'Arcy Drollinger. Heklina touched so many people's lives, including ours. A fierce, original drag queen with a wonderfully twisted sense of humor, Heklina was a popular guest in the early days of our podcast Feast of Fun, back when we called it Feast of Fools. Later on she went on to create her own podcast “Drag Time with Heklina” where she interviewed many notable queer artists including Ana Matronic of the Scissor Sisters. Back in 2006, our first live podcast in San Francisco featured Heklina in it, and she was so befuddled about what the Internet was that in a rare moment, she showed up out of drag in her everyday clothes for the show. Despite always being super busy, Heklina took time to visit with us whenever we were in town or when she came to Chicago. It's devastating to think about the sorrow, but it's comforting to know that her humor, style and rascally nature lives on in the lives of so many artists, LGBTQ+ folks and the people who loved her in San Francisco. Thanks for all the memories, laughs and fun Heklina. Here's what we think her twisted sense of humor would have said about her own death: “The next roast of Heklina will be held at Fleischmann's Crematorium.”--------- Originally posted FOF #2344 - Heklina Will Not Be Silenced - 06.14.16Heklina is a living legend- she started her amazing drag show in San Francisco way back in 1996. This iconic night of drag, then known as Trannyshack, ignited the careers of countless entertainers including Lady Gaga, Peaches Christ and Ana Matronic.Over the years, Heklina saved her dollar tips and got some friends to invest in her own club Oasis only to rebrand the drag show as Mother and not without a little controversy.Today, Heklina joins us to take a look at the horrific shooting in Orlando and how gay bar owners are responding to the violence.Plus--• How drag queens have gone from being fringe acts to mainstream attractions.• Why San Francisco can't have nice things.• Facebook may delete all your photos if you don't install this app.• Heklina's tips on picking up a straight guy on Craigslist!

Peaches Christ steps Behind The Rope. Legendary Drag Performer, Peaches Christ, that is. Born Joshua Grannell, Peaches takes us back to the beginning and what it was like growing up in a suburban Maryland town with a love of all things “alternative” - Horror Films, The Macabre, John Waters, Depeche Mode and The Pet Shop Boys, to name a few. That “alternative” also came with an early Queer Identity, which Peaches combined with her love of film, to enter film school. It was during her senior thesis at this film school that Peaches Christ was born. After film school, Peaches ultimately settled in San Francisco and voila her famed Midnight Mass live movie / drag/ musical extravaganza began. It shortly thereafter became a thing, a big thing, attracting the likes of RuPaul, The Scissor Sisters' Ana Matronic, Elvira, and even John Waters himself. Speaking of RuPaul, we discuss that one time RuPaul basically announced he was starting a little show called “Drag Race” at one of Peaches' Midnight Mass live events. Peaches discusses Drag Race and RuPaul, how far both have come from just starting out to this worldwide, for lack of a better word, “mainstream” part of Pop Culture! What about Showgirls, the sh*tstorm cult classic of a movie that was one of Peaches' main inspirations for the Midnight Mass Movie Extravaganza? Electronically Yours with Martyn Ware

There is much intelligence and playfulness in Ana Lynch's creative life. As Ana Matronic in the Scissor Sisters, she is an iconic figure in the glam-art pop-rock scene. She is also currently a Radio 2 DJ specialising in the wide world of disco, and with her husband, Seth Kirby, she creates large-scale ambient visual performances. She burst onto the scene as the female co-lead vocalist for the Scissor Sisters. She has stated that, in her eyes, the objective of the band was "about people displaying their fantasies on the outside, trying to break out of the everyday, and look like their dreams". In The Scissorhood, the fan community for Scissor Sisters, those fans who hold a special affinity for Ana are known as "nuns". Fans who are attracted to Ana, even if they might not usually be attracted to women, term themselves "Anasexual". As an author, she has published a book entitled Robot Universe: Legendary Automatons and Androids from the Ancient World to the Distant Future, and she is fiercely proud of her Celtic roots. This episode is a fascinating insight into her alternate world of robots, sexuality, futurology and just plain fun.

The likes of Katie Melua, Jamie Cullum and Dido dominate supermarket shelves, as the UK charts are pervaded with an overwhelming sense of beige – that is, until, a glamourous quartet from the streets of New York storm through with a disco Pink Floyd cover to punctuate the gloom with glitter. The Scissor Sisters channelled the peacocking showmanship of Elton John and Freddie Mercury through an early 2000s sensibility, which remains futuristic, yet timeless, to this day. In this episode, we appraise a purposefully, performatively queer band with something to say, and the bangers to back them up.
